As soon as we walked in we were given a nice welcome. We got some Kimchi and crunchy noodle sticks that was complimentary. It was my husband's first time trying both and he loved it. The kimchi was delicious. We ordered two orders of the pork Xiao long bao, popcorn chicken, chow mein noddles, fried vegetable rice, spicy chili oil wontons and WOW outstanding!! There was only one server, but he was very attentive. Checking up on us and filled our water without being asked. In term of food, they are in larger portion so price are reasonable. Not as "soupy" as I prefer, but the flavor was great. The skin was springy. The pan-fried vegetable dumplings were good. Shrimp and Pork wonton with chili oil: good little appetizer, i liked the splash of green on it from the green onions and had a good home made taste. Flavored Beef Tendon and Golden Prime Beef Soup: The spicy broth was excellent, savory and rich with a pleasant spice level. Noodles were good and for both dishes I loved having something green in the bowl to make it more appetizing. XLB + Pan Fried Buns: The thing we noticed with both of these were there was very little broth/soup inside which is one of the main reasons to order these dishes. The pan fried buns were still soft and not all the way crispy on bottom. Salt and Pepper Fried Fish: I love this dish so much and will order it when I think someone will make it right. Their version is very nice with fluffy fish inside and a crunchy slightly spicy outer layer. The Background: I rarely go out to have Chinese food in Orange County because I find most places to be average at best. Normally if I have a craving, I drive up to the Rowland Heights area for authentic Chinese food. So going to Yum Dumpling I had some apprehensions. Thankfully, I had nothing to fear. The Food: My wife and I ordered popcorn chicken to start and the beef tendon noodle soup and sweet-and-sour tenderloin as entrees. The popcorn chicken pieces were quite large and juicy while the breading on the outside was crispy and perfectly seasoned. The noodle soup was flavorful with just the perfect amount of szechuan -- a little kick but not so spicy that it numbs your mouth. And the sweet-and-sour tenderloin was solid. The batter was a little softer than I would like; I prefer it a little crispier to balance out the syrupy goodness so that each piece wouldn't get soggy. But still, the flavors were there and the meat was moist and tender. The Setting: Brightly lit with orange walls and light colored wooden tables, the place is clean and has a warm, inviting atmosphere. However, for a sit-down restaurant, it's a little on the smaller side. There's a small counter for 2 people, about 4 tables for 4 people, and 4 tables for 6 people. And with limited space, it would be difficult to combine tables for parties of 8 or more. Oh, and I found it odd for a sit-down restaurant with beautiful bowls, plates, and utensils to serve drinking water in cheap, disposable plastic cups. The Location: It's on busy Chapman Avenue in a small strip mall with a small parking lot with limited spots. Plus, each parking spot is a little narrow, so if you drive an SUV or truck, it'll be a tight squeeze getting in and out if your door. The Prices: Maybe I'm slow or living in the past, but the cost of food is creeping up everywhere, and Yum Dumpling is no exception. Prices range from $7 to $10 for appetizers, $10 to $20 for side dishes, and $14 to $20 for entrees. Our dinner for two came out to be about $52 with tip -- a little higher than expected for a place that serves water in a plastic cup. The Service: Our server was friendly and knowledgeable. Unfortunately, he was basically the only one working the entire floor. There was a female server too, but we rarely saw her. This meant a little slower service than expected given the relative size of the place. The Conclusion: While not flawless, Yum Dumpling serves up tasty and authentic Chinese food (a rarity in Orange County) in a clean environment with friendly service. I noticed that the menu items were family style dishes so I just asked for extra plates/bowls so I could eat separately and take the rest togo. This is an excellent dumpling house and broader Chinese restaurant. It is already popular and rightly so. The dining room is not very large. A lot of people get takeout as we did for watching the Oscars. The dumplings are all good. They also have rice and noodle dishes. You can get Orange Chicken and Broccoli Beef for the folks in your party who they you were going to Panda Express. We went in on a busy night, and it is genuinely good to see a place like this doing well. The energy was strong and the dining room was mostly full, with predominantly non-Asian diners. This tells you something. I want to preface this by saying I did not order what they are known for, the dumplings. Instead, we ordered the cucumber salad, beef fried rice, beef noodle soup, and broccoli beef. Overall, everything was OK and better than a lot of standard Chinese takeout spots, but generally pretty meh. The cucumber salad lacked flavor, as did the broccoli beef. Both felt under-seasoned and forgettable. The beef fried rice was decent, cooked well, but nothing memorable. The beef noodle soup was the highlight. It was pretty good, and I appreciated the fresh vegetables they add, though I am not sure exactly what they were. One limitation is that you cannot order a combination of beef, tendon, and tripe. They are only available separately, which is always a bit disappointing. I am willing to pay extra for a combo. That soup also cannot hold a candle to AJ Noodle Cafe, in Irvine which is the gold standard for beef noodle soup in my opinion. I always wonder why small places cannot accommodate simple customizations, especially when customers are willing to pay for it. Service was good enough. You order at the counter, then sit down and get served. No issues there. I would come back and try the dumplings since that is clearly what they are known for, but based on this visit alone, three stars feels fair. read more
