I really love OkiDoki Meiji, especially their Cold or Hot Egg Tororo & Mentai Udon. I had egg tororo in New York and had been looking for a restaurant that served tororo ever since, but I couldn't find one until I came across OkiDoki Meiji. Now it's my favorite dish and what I order every time I go. Their udon is house made, and you can really tell in the texture. It's so comforting and chewy. My friend always gets the Spicy Beef Udon and talks about how good it is every time we go. The restaurant itself has a simple and cozy atmosphere, but that's part of what I like about it. The focus is really on the food. I've never had to wait too long. The last time we went around 6pm, we were seated within a few minutes and there were still several open tables. The service has always been great. Everyone is very friendly and attentive, and they regularly check in to make sure we have everything we need without being overbearing. This is my 5th time coming back now, and I've noticed the last 2 times the quality and portion has just gone down. I usually order the spicy beef udon with the fried rice ball with cheese. It usually is really good, but that day that I went, I got about 1 spoonful of beef... ONE for a whole pot of udon, and the cheese rice ball barely had any cheese in it. I noticed the time prior to this, that there was also barely any meat in there and it was pretty fatty. My partner got the pork shabu one and that had a decent amount in it. Nabeyaki Udon is a must get!!! I get this every time I come here. This time around, we decided to try a few different items on the menu, Spicy Beef Udon Soup and Inaka Soba. All three portions were a good size, and we were able to share everything between three people. The udon noodles were so chewy and delicious! Nabeyaki Udon: This was my favorite! The broth was very light and clean, and it wasn't too sweet. You can get the tempura on the side, which I recommend because it does get soggy in the broth. Would definitely get this again. Spicy Beef Udon: Not spicy at all, but it had a lot beef and lots of flavor. This is a good option if you're looking to try another udon dish from here. Inaka Soba: We wanted to try a dry noodle and soba, so we got it cold. You can choose between hot and cold. It was refreshing and looked very healthy, with lots of vegetables and good flavor. Both of their menus are very similar, and you will see some same dishes across the two. We started off with their crispy kara-age (fried chicken) which is best eaten with a squeeze of lemon and dunked into their yummy garlicky, oniony dipping sauce. Always best eaten right out of the fryer, piping hot. You just can't go wrong with their most popular app. For starters, we also got their blistered shishito peppers, which comes with bonito flakes dancing from the steam of the peppers. If you've never had shishito peppers before, they are very very mild in spiciness, but be warned you'll always have one extra spicy pepper when you least expect it! For our main, we got the spicy beef udon, which comes simmering in its metal bowl atop a fire, keeping it hot as you enjoy it slowly. The red broth has a nice kick of heat, but not so spicy that it will irritate your throat. The slices of beef are oh so tender and flavorful. The rich broth clings on perfectly to the thick udon noodles. If you're sharing, plan on getting extra udon noodles to soak up all that delicious broth! At the end, drop the cheesy rice ball into the broth to make a congee, soaking up more of that delicious broth. There were two ladies taking orders so ordering was quick; the wait for the food to arrive was very long. I got the spicy seafood udon with standard spice, which took nearly 25 minutes. I would not recommend coming here during a work lunch because you will be rushing through your meal, as that was our experience. While the spicy seafood udon is delicious, the soup serving is small. A pro is that there is large shrimp in the soup and lots of baby clams. For a standard spice level, the soup was surprisingly very savory and spicy. Normally when I order something spicy at a Japanese restaurant, I expect the flavor to not actually be spicy. The udon comes with a fried rice ball with a cheese filling on the side. You should toss the rice ball in the broth to soak up all the flavor and eat it because the ball itself is very hard. In terms of price, the food is expensive for the portion. The restaurant itself is very small so I highly recommend arriving early wait or to put yourself on the Yelp waitlist. I would upgrade to spicy if I ordered this entrée again. The assorted tempura was cooked fresh, had a nice, crispy texture, and didn't feel greasy. The drink menu offers sake, shochu, local and Japanese beers, sodas, lemonade, tea, and more. The happy hour menu looks great, too. I had a great lunch experience overall. I've been to Meiji Semen, the original location, and the only difference between the two is the Okidoki has spacious seatings and has sashimi/sushi rolls on their menu. The quality of their udon and soba is still the same. We got there pretty early, but it got crowded quick. I ordered the spicy beef udon and it comes in a hot pot style. There's definitely a shorter wait here and it's a bit more spacious which is nice. As for the food, I tried their spicy beef udon since it was a cold day. It is pretty pricy for what it is - "spicy" soupy udon with a few shavings of beef. If you want it to have enough spiciness to feel it, you'll have to pay an extra $1.5. It came with a crispy rice ball with a bit of cheese inside to eat with your leftover soup. The taste of everything was really good! I was especially surprised at how much I enjoyed the rice ball. Is it worth the price? Considering it's mostly carbs, soup, and a very disappointing amount of beef, I would say it's a bit overpriced. But again, it was really yummy! Service was good when we could grab someone's attention. Food: Spicy Beef Udon (8.3/10) - It comes with a crispy rice cheese ball that I was told by a staff that you eat with the broth after finishing the udon. The rice ball was definitely crispy and tasted good dipped in the broth, but it did not have much cheese so I would give it a 6/10. Still a fun and unique addition. The spicy beef udon itself felt like eating hotpot since it stayed warm the entire time with a flame underneath. The broth had a nice flavor with a mild level of spice. If you want it spicier or a larger bowl, that unfortunately does cost extra. There was a decent amount of beef that was flavorful along with a few vegetables. Service: The staff were kind and helpful and checked in on us occasionally. I went on a Friday and there was a waitlist, which we joined using the tablet outside. Some people also joined ahead of time through Yelp and I'd prefer to do that next time. Ambiance: Clean, bright, and cozy spot with a small window that looks into the kitchen and a bar seating area. Been awhile since my last visit, looks like it's now a udon and soba specialty restaurant. Decent food for a casual lunch. Service is friendly. Blue crab roll is hefty sized but there's not much blue crab flavor. A bit disappointing on the kimchi nabe udon (a seasonal dish)... it tastes a bit more sweet than spicy/savory, udon is overcooked. Loved my experience! After having some Japan withdrawals & craving something savory & crispy, the Katsu Curry Udon definitely hit the spot. Udon was cooked to the perfect tenderness, chicken was juicy/crunchy, & most importantly, the curry tasted like home cooked meal with love. The waiters suggested to take home the curry & pair with rice, which was amazing! Since rich naturally has starch, it made the curry udon a bit thicker consistency, it was a great take home meal. This place is always packed, and for good reason and their servers know how to keep things running efficiently. It was a little loud in here due to having a lot of guests in at the same time, but it wasn't too bad. You can still talk to your table. Okidoki is a great place to go when it's a cold day and you need something soupy to warm your heart and soul. Egg, Tororo, and Mentai - We love mentai so we had to choose this. The potato (tororo) added a nice light flavor to the udon as well. However it also gave a super slimy texture to the dish, so just a warning because this isn't a good dish for any picky eaters. Curry Udon - I always crave Japanese curry so I went with this option. The flavor is very warm and homey, but with such a thick broth, I got full really fast and couldn't finish it. I think I would've enjoyed it more if I got the katsu curry rice bowl instead or one of their other bowls. I think we just made some choices that aren't our preferences, but the food here are very well made with some new things to try. I'd like to go back to try a more simpler udon bowl next time along with their desserts. Those looked good, but we just got too full too fast. read more

Saw this place on social media and decided to give it a try. We ordered the viral spicy beef udon, and since I like spicy food, I upgraded to extra spicy (there is a $1 upcharge). The flavor was great--rich broth, a good amount of beef, and a generous portion of udon. It wasn't spicy to me personally, but it was still very enjoyable and didn't taste artificial at all. The udon also comes with a cheese ball on the side. After you finish the noodles, you're supposed to drop the cheese ball into the remaining soup and let it cook down into a risotto-like texture. Honestly, I enjoyed the cheese ball "risotto" even more than the udon itself--it was so good. We also ordered the chicken karaage as an appetizer and absolutely loved it. It was super crispy and cooked perfectly. Service really stood out. The servers checked in on us regularly, and I appreciated that our server took the time to explain how to eat the cheese ball. If she hadn't explained it, we probably would've just eaten it on the side and missed out. Attention to detail and being polite truly makes a difference. Overall, I really enjoyed the ambience, the service, and the food. Will definitely be coming back. read more
