I've been personally reviewing burgers across the country for about the past 10 years. I've experienced both ends of the spectrum and typically use my evaluation of an establishments burger quality to rate the ability of the kitchen. I evaluate based first on bun (toasted? flavorful? does it fall apart as you eat? etc); then on meat patty (too thick or thin? cooked properly? juicy? etc); then lettuce (crisp? fresh? etc); then bacon (crisp? not enough? etc); cheese (too much? etc); onions (raw? red? white? cooked? etc). Lastly, the fries (crispy? salty? thick or thin? etc) So, when told that Skinflints was "the best burger around" I had to go. Here's the review. The bun was an english muffin and a good one. The patty was very thick, but cooked appropriately and fairly flavorful. The lettuce was ok. There were only 2 pitifully narrow strips of crispy bacon. Too much cheese and no onions initially until I asked specifically for them, once added, they were red, raw and tasty. Then the fries...bland, not crispy or salty and a little too thick for my liking. Overall the burger was good, not great. The fries were pitiful and I think if I go again I'll get a baked potato or something like that. My girlfriend was with me and she got the Tuna steak with a sweet potato. Her review? "Don't order either, not worth it. The Tuna was HUGE and not cooked to order and the sweet potato tasted like it was dipped in syrup before and after it was cooked...waaaaay too sweet." The atmosphere was wonderful, probably the best part. The bar has a wide selection of draft beers and the bartenders were friendly. Overall review of Skinflints is that it's a nice neighborhood restaurant if you're looking for place to relax, wear comfy clothes, and not break the bank. We'll probably go back and see if our second experience is better than our first. read more

The food here is well above average contrary to the previous review. Tthe waitstaff has always been attentive andprofessional to my mother and myself. Never have we been dissapointed in this place. Bay Ridge has several bars and lounges, but Skinflints always has been one of the best two stop shops. Great food and great bar. This has been a go-to spot of mine for about 14 years now. I notice other reviewers here have described it as a pub; I have never thought of it that way. I think it's a family restaurant to which people happen to go for pub grub. I used to live in Bay Ridge and started coming to Skinflints in '95 or '96 to watch the Yanks in the playoffs. It's not a sports bar/restaurant; it's a restaurant that happens to have TVs discreetly placed in the dining room. The sound isn't on the TVs, so whatever game is on is unobtrusive to conversation (unless it's a playoff game of some kind, and in that case, at least the male portion of the crowd is going to be into it). And the TV setup has evolved over the years; there used to be only one signal coming into the restaurant, so all the TVs had to be tuned to the same event. Now, there are multiple signals, so fans of the Mets can still watch when the Yanks are on at the same time and vice versa. The quality of the TVs has been upgraded, too; I believe all the sets are HD now--at least the ones at the opposite ends of the bar are. (There are two more in the front dining room and one in the back dining room.) The fare here features meat and potatoes and fish, French onion soup and a soup of the day, grilled veggies, zucchini and mozzarella sticks, mashed potatoes, sometimes a pasta special. There is a daily list of specials attached to the menu, and I have often ordered the fish special. Very few people with dietary restrictions will come here and be disappointed by the offerings. And as another reviewer mentioned, I LOVE the onion flatbread that is given out in a basket with breadsticks before your apps or entrees arrive. In terms of the service, I am surprised other reviewers have had problems with it, because I haven't. It's always friendly, and I always find it attentive. Maybe some people are in more of a hurry than I am. I have also developed informal "friendships" (hi, Lara!) with the waitresses over the years, to the point where they know what I am going to order before I sit down. Until recently, Skinflints seemed to retain its wait staff for an unusually long time; there have been a couple of departures in the past couple of years, but before that there was pretty much a decade of stability. That has to count for something, right? Prices are very reasonable; a soup is about $5, if I'm not mistaken, and even fish entrees are only about $16. Free refills on the soft drinks. It has been a long while since I have had dessert at Skinflints, but the red velvet cake is deelish. The space is pretty well lit, bright enough for me to read, which I also love. It can get crowded; sometimes you have to wait 30 minutes or more for a table (usually from 8 to 10 p.m. on Friday or Saturday night). But to me, the food and the experience are worth the wait. I still make the drive from Yonkers about once or twice a month because I enjoy the comfortable atmosphere; it's a neighborhood place with a lot of regulars where the owner knows your name (as he does mine). Also, I enjoy watching the Yankee game while filling my stomach. There's value in such a place. read more

They gave a wonderful burger which is made of English muffin bun with lots of cheese, Their salads are very nice as well. The wings are not good as it's only fried and has no flavorer to it. in total, If you miss a burger next to bar with little light. it can be ok. most people in the restaurant were over 40+. good place to have drinks with ladies around that age. read more

My friend and I were driving by and we decided to stop at Skinflints. It reminded me of an old Irish pub. The waitress was very nice. The food is also very good. My friend had the open faced steak sandwich and I had the chicken parmesan sandwich with coleslaw. If I am in the neighborhood, I will definitely eat at Skinflints again. read more

Chicken Marsala was terrible, swt potato was sour/bitter and waitress was hard to find. Would run off as soon as you tried to order something or ask for a refill. And it was way too hot inside. The waitress was professional and what you would expect forma good waitress, but the food and the inside temp was terrible. My family and friends and I will not be going back there for food. read more

Okay, so I had the burger everyone is talking about... I thought it was plain and the fact it was served on an English muffin threw me off. It was okay, not great, or even good. The place is engaging. Classic bar with a local feel. The visual of the place is classic, dark wood, white tile, and eclectic decor throughout topped with fairy lights! Most places lately are jammed tight when it comes to seating - not so here. Didn't feel like we were seated so close we could hear the neighbors convo. Arrived around 8pm on a Saturday - hostess took our name, managed a seat and drink at the bar, then we were seated for dinner. The interaction with staff was pleasant. We had read all the reviews so we came prepared to order the Specialties! The Rib app is enough for a small meal! It's served a side- we got French fries. The ribs were meaty, feel off the bone w/o any effort and nicely seasoned. The ff had nice flavor but had been left sitting in a flyer basket too long. They were limp and only just warm enough. We also ordered their wings. I'm not quite sure what they do to those Wings, but they're Magical! Such flavor, and crispy too. I tried the dipping sauce but preferred w/o, they were that good. Next we went for the Burger and the Chicken Pot Pie. We're huge burger fans, I got mine MR with Bacon, provolone and mushrooms. I dunno, I wasn't Wowed by their burger. It looked good, was cooked to my request, but when it came to flavor the meat was simply flat! Seemed unseasoned to me and even topping it w/A-1 barely helped it out. It was edible but uneventful - not going to be my choice next time. The Chicken Pot Pie on the other hand - WOW! So full of Flavor!! Pipping hot, golden brown (not burnt) and filled with chunks (wedges??) of flavorful chicken! The gravy was yummy, the vegetable weren't a blah soggy mess. The Chicken Pot Pie is a home run! We were too full for desert- but the suggestions were inviting. My cappuccino was desert enough, made perfectly. I plan on returning when I'm back in Bklyn. read more

I really like skinflints. The ambience is very nice, considering its a bar. The lights are dimmed and it has a nice feel. I've tried the potato skins, mozzarella sticks, and French onion soup. Last time I was there, I had the Shepherd's pie and it was delicious. I've also had their burgers and they're awesome. The service was great the last time I went. We ate at Skinflints once, some months back. The most enjoyable aspect was the charming, turn-of-the-20th-Century decor. The place was packed and noisy, which I don't love - this was a Saturday for an early dinner - and we had been searching for a great burger neat home (remember, this was some time ago). So we both ordered burgers. They were good, perfectly decent, but not great, and I for one dislike using an English muffin as a burger bun - they just don't have the required heft. I guess it's most telling that we haven't rushed back there again. (Oh, and since then Burger Bistro has opened on Third Avenue - theirs really are the best burgers in Bay Ridge, possibly in the galaxy, IMO.) read more

Got 2 appetizers and some beer. The popcorn shrimp wasn't very good, tasted very fishy. The sauce it came with also tasted like a weird sour mayo tarter sauce combo with a layer of oil on top. Pretty gross. The mozzarella sticks were good. Our waitress was very quick, friendly, and attentive. So overall, appetizers were meh, service was great, beer refreshing but a little more then I like to pay for a Guinness. read more

As good as it get with Old School Bar/ Restaurant combo place. Decor is still there from the original candy store it was in the early 1900's. The drink selection is rather large. The bartenders wear a classic Uniform of a collared shirts and matching pants. Brings it back to the old days of how pubs were run. I personally love this entire and wish more places did it. This USED TO BE my #1 spot for burgers. I would rant and rave about the english muffin bun and garlic mashed potatoes. However, tonight's experience was totally sour. The service was shotty, the food was way below par and the beautiful interior's lack of maintenance has gone from shabby chic to pain old shabby. We waited 45 min for a table, 25 min before the server took our order, another 25 min (at least) to receive our food only - to find cheez-whiz on our burger instead of the cheddar we ordered. I mentioned the cheese swap to the waiter and he said "well, there's nothing I can do about it now". I honestly would have made a bigger stink to a manager but I had already eaten it due to the fact that I was so hungry from waiting so long for the food to begin with. Oh, and we waited another 20 min after eating to receive our bill. I'm sad to say but, as much as I love the monkey lamps in this place, this was probably my last visit. read more

The one thing I always get here knowing it will be good is a cheeseburger deluxe. They are so juicy :)~ and the blood seeps right into the English muffin, YUM! My sister got chicken marsala. It was bland as hell. I made chicken marsala a few months ago and not to brag.... But Skinflins ain't got nuttin on my chicken marsala! Personally, it's a nice little spot if you go out with a few friends, have a few drinks. If you are a wing person, I would not recommend their wings. There are two types of wings: The crispy/dry wings that do not have sauce on it. Sorta like they just thru the wings in a deep fryer & forgot about them. Then there are the wings that you could slide your teeth across the bone and the chicken falls right off, while there is a nice red/orange sauce that taste so good with celery sticks. Yeaaaaaaa, you know what I'm talking about ;) ... Well you can assume which ones they have there. Not recommended. Do not even think about ordering nachos. They forgot to mention that it is 8 tortilla chips in a circle, melted cheese, a slice of jalapeno pepper & a few BIG slices of tomatoe for decoration. No beans, no guac, no overlapping = not nachos. So funny - when we were eating, the first thing I thought of was Yelp & I told my Father & sister that I can't wait to discuss these. I should have took a pic! Great food. But shoddy service. Went in for sunday lunch, denise as a waitress. Everything was going good but a person shouldn't have to wait twenty minutes for a waitress to come back and get the.check. was trying to pay with a card to leave a good tip but after waiting forever left cash and she got about a $3 tip because thats all the cash we had and we were just pissed at the lack of attention and service. Every time we visit here, the food is amazing and the atmosphere is welcoming. I love the music, the back patio, the shell steak is AMAZING, and the staff is always very friendly. This place has become my new favorite place to go in Bay Ridge! The regulars that visit always order something different and are always happy with their food.
