My friend and I were driving by and we decided to stop at Skinflints. It reminded me of an old Irish pub. The waitress was very nice. The food is also very good. Chicken Marsala was terrible, swt potato was sour/bitter and waitress was hard to find. Would run off as soon as you tried to order something or ask for a refill. And it was way too hot inside. The waitress was professional and what you would expect forma good waitress, but the food and the inside temp was terrible. We ate at Skinflints once, some months back. The most enjoyable aspect was the charming, turn-of-the-20th-Century decor. The place was packed and noisy, which I don't love - this was a Saturday for an early dinner - and we had been searching for a great burger neat home (remember, this was some time ago). So we both ordered burgers. They were good, perfectly decent, but not great, and I for one dislike using an English muffin as a burger bun - they just don't have the required heft. I guess it's most telling that we haven't rushed back there again. As good as it get with Old School Bar/ Restaurant combo place. Decor is still there from the original candy store it was in the early 1900's. The drink selection is rather large. The bartenders wear a classic Uniform of a collared shirts and matching pants. Brings it back to the old days of how pubs were run. I personally love this entire and wish more places did it. This USED TO BE my #1 spot for burgers. I would rant and rave about the english muffin bun and garlic mashed potatoes. However, tonight's experience was totally sour. The service was shotty, the food was way below par and the beautiful interior's lack of maintenance has gone from shabby chic to pain old shabby. We waited 45 min for a table, 25 min before the server took our order, another 25 min (at least) to receive our food only - to find cheez-whiz on our burger instead of the cheddar we ordered. I mentioned the cheese swap to the waiter and he said "well, there's nothing I can do about it now". I honestly would have made a bigger stink to a manager but I had already eaten it due to the fact that I was so hungry from waiting so long for the food to begin with. Skinflints has been around since I was a kid when it was an ice-cream parlor by the name of Meyer & Blohm, which everyone called "Meyer's". My parents met there, so it has always been an important piece of history for my family and friends. It's like home. All of the dishes are great from burgers to salads to sandwiches to entrees. I have never heard a complaint about anything. Whatever anyone has is a culinary delight.The food is always fresh and they have a good turnover. It's a good place for children of all ages. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and you see some of the same faces for years, in staff and patrons. There's a very convivial atmosphere and the prices are extremely reasonable and the portion sizes are generous. I prefer the original dining room, but the new room is also very cozy. The owners have done a wonderful job in maintaining the old time feel and keeping the original details such as the tin ceiling, tile floor, mirrors and carved woodwork. The bar area has ample seating and I love the windows that look out onto Fifth Avenue and 79th Street. Great for people watching! A friend took me here about a year ago, I never heard of it but he knows his food. Ordered bacon cheeseburger, comes with fries and pickle on English muffin. I was very surprised how good the burgers are here. The burgers are about 8 ounces and very juicy and great price, about $10. Also try the ribs, the best ribs I had in awhile. Overall highly recommend it for the food, service is sometimes very slow and they rarely come to table to ask if you need anything and if everything is good.
