After grocery shopping at BJ's with a couple of friends, we decided to stay local for dinner. Throwing around a bunch of restaurant names, a friend recommended Skinflints. I've walked by this place plenty and have heard of it on occasion, but never stopped in.
The interior is like any other bar, very sports oriented. They're pretty big on football, as I saw it. It's very spacious and dimmed, plenty of room in the back for large crowds as well. The staff seemed pretty friendly, received greetings the entire walk to our seats. Our waitress was friendly but the smallest things can ruin your experience, I have to admit. More on that towards the end of this review.
So we started off with a round of french onion soups and potato skins. I have to say, their french onion soup is pretty decent. It was salty, but it wasn't too over the top. The broth worked very well and the onion flavor wasn't overpowering the cheese or bread. The bread, however, tasted stale. Maybe it was an off day? It threw off the dish, not going to lie. The potato skins were alright, nothing special in my opinion. The melted cheddar on top was very interesting, reminded me a lot of nacho cheese. Honestly, I've had better. However, the potato was cooked just right. Normally, when I encounter this dish at other locations, it's like biting into a tough piece of potato. At least this place had something right.
For our main dishes, my friends ordered the shell steak, chicken fingers, and I had the steak au poivre. In my case, talk about a HUGE mistake. The entire dish made me sick, I felt so nauseated. I have NEVER had a steak dish that messed with my taste buds to this extent. The steak was cooked decently, the peppercorns worked great with the dish as a whole. It was that god forsaken sauce that threw off everything. From my knowledge, this sauce is suppose to be made of cognac, heavy cream, and fond from the bottom of the pan (after cooking the steak). HOW DOES ONE MESS THAT UP!? The sauce tasted disgusting! I'm still feeling sick from that dish. Just thinking about it makes me want to gag. The sad part was that my dish was drenched in it, it was all over the rice and steak. After scraping the sauce off the steak, I took my time eating it. Didn't bother touching the rice, that was a puke session waiting to happen! The chicken fingers were pretty decent, it was edible in comparison to what I ate. The shell steak had to be the best dish out of all the three. It was served with a side of mashed potatoes, gravy, and veggies. I do have to give props where it's deserved. My friend and I asked for our steaks to be done medium, the only place that's ever hit the nail on the head. The steak was actually cooked medium, no complaints on that one.
After our meal, we asked the waitress for the check. Now, let me continue off my earlier statement. The smallest things can ruin your entire experience at a restaurant. When we asked for the check, I nicely and politely asked if she could split our bill. This woman jumps and with a nasty attitude, tells me "Don't you have a phone? Can't you calculate it off of that?". Wow, are you serious!? At no point that night were we demanding or picky, and you have the audacity to give me such a nasty attitude?! My friend noticed the look on my face and quickly jumped in because she knew my mouth was about to go off. OH HELL NO! Major tip declination, MAJOR! And surprising, this woman was of age. According to my friend, she's worked there for years! So this is how you treat paying customers?! Disgusting! I don't care how tough your day has been, there's absolutely no reason for you to speak to me in such a manner.
I would have given this place 3 stars based on food and service prior the incident, but after this woman's disgusting attitude, it was bumped to 1. Like i said, the smallest things can ruin your experience. NEVER AGAIN! read more
