I'm always on the lookout for a good dumpling/bao spot that doesn't break the bank. This spot makes fresh bao & dumplings cooked to order, and it's well worth a bit of a wait! The menu isn't as large as the other food stalls, but that's actually a good sign in my opinion. They know what they do well! I tried the soup dumplings and Shengjian Bao, both of which were so juicy, savoury, & steaming hot! They did not skimp out on the filling, and I could have eaten them all myself if I wanted to! The main downside is that they're located inside the First Markham Place food court, which is notorious for being super crowded on weekends. It can be tricky to find parking and a table, so if you can, come during less busy times.

Located inside the First Markham Place food court. I love this place. The Siu lung bao is so good. One of the best in GTA. Staff is always friendly. Price is acceptable.

Shengjian King is a store specializing in making assorted Baos: Sheng-Jian Bao(生煎包), Xiao long bao(小籠包), 包子(Bao Zi), etc. I have had their food twice so far. I think they make baos well. Espcially the amount of broth kept inside the baos are stunning! My throat was burned two times when I had their Sheng-Jian Bao! Maybe they should have a warning sign: Warning! lots of hot broth inside!, lol The flavour was tasty and full of meat's aroma. However, it can be a bit dull because it's always the same flavour. (I may be too picky) I still recommend you to try it if you haven't. You'll enjoy it

Taste very good. Crispy bottom and juicy inside. Good quality of food in the mall. The only comment is the pricy, $10 for 4 pieces is quite expensive. I can only enjoy once a while.

Pan fried soup buns

Small shop located in FMP foodcourt. Both soup dumplings and pan fried buns were $8.99. We opted to try pan fried buns this time and wait time is 10 mins. Appears that everything is made to order so I think that could cause a long wait at peak times. Be prepared! Each order had 4 and we were warned that it'll be hot. Appreciate the reminder since the soup can burst out! Would say this is similar to Sheng Jian Bao in North York but bit more expensive I believe. The bottom was equally seared to crispy. Limited menu options here but worth a try! Gotta try their soup dumplings next. Didn't see a machine so probably cash only!

Crispy baos, not enough soup in the dumplings! This is located in the First Markham Place food court, at the very end unit of the strip of food vendors. Decided to grab their shengjian bao while waiting for another order at another store. I got the order of 4 baos, and it came with a super crispy bottom and hot interior. However, I think there could have been more soup in the baos, as it was a little dry and not what I'm use to. The wait time for these baos were long as they have to make it fresh! I'd probably get these again if I'm in the food court, but wouldn't purposely come get these.

What is this creation, Shengjian bao? Did Chinese Santa just gift me this exploding, piping hot, Criiiiz-py, soup dumpling/bun in the tail end of summer? Roadtripping through Markham to Montreal and this store intrigued me and we gave it a try. A small stall in the mall with quite a line and handmade buns. We got the crispy-bottom eponymous bun- the Shengjian bao-- 4 buns topped with sesame seeds per order. When you take a small bite, boozy broth shoots out (one even sprayed all over our car door lol) and boy, the combination of that broth and the crispy pastry is just pure perfection. The meat inside is quite delectable too ;) I might be ignorant to have tried this dish for the first time in my life but I for sure will look for it now! Beats regular steamed soup dumplings any day! We also ordered pork buns/- decent flavor, not enough filling IMO. but then again, the store is called Shengjian King, not pork bun king. Will def be back.

Was craving for some dumplings and ordered soup dumplings and shengjiang bao . Each came to $7.99 before taxes. The order took about 15 minutes to make. So it came out super fresh and super hot. I really enjoyed the shengjiang bao as the bottom was super crispy, meat filling was tasty and super juicy with each bite. It is a must order for sure. The soup dumplings were okay, but I think I would come only for the shengjiang baos. I did not like the vinegar condiment that came with the dumplings since it tastes a little off to me.

Crispy shengjian baos definitely. These little mighty buns packed full of flavour. One nibble to give just enough room to suck out the soup in the bun, wine mixed with the juices of the meat in the bun, piping hot, be careful when sipping, then you add the black vinegar with ginger slices to eat the rest of this little morsel. You even get to watch them making the dumplings and buns off to the side too. The service was slow, was told to wait 10 minutes, but definitely waited longer than that for 4 buns being prepared in the pan. Just over $2 for each little bun.

I loved the dumplings here - they're made fresh and to order. Since it's such a small spot you see how they prepare everything. It can take 10+ min for the order but it's well worth it. I tried the soup dumplings and was pleasantly surprised by how much soup and filling were in them. Definitely a place i'll be visiting more often.

Traditional pork buns with ground pork and green onion

Dumplings and stuff are like my fav food, but there is something slightly off about the flavour here. I personally feel like their fillings are like...too strong in flavour? But what kind of flavour, I'm not sure. It's saltier than I expect but that's not quite what the overwhelming taste is... I can't put my finger on it, but I feel like some sriracha or vinegar would make it a lot better (I was too lazy to go back and get the sauces, but they have it). However, prices here are pretty good! Wait time for my food was approx. 10-15 mins. The cashier is very nice too! I'm curious to come back and try their wonton and shengjian bao though! Will be in my list for when I return.

Who doesn't like steamed asian buns? I love asian baos! I've been coming to First Markham Place's foodcourt for many years but it was the first time ordering here. I wasn't familiar with the menu and I knew that I wanted a mix. The staff was very helpful in explaining the prices...I could either get one bun for $1.50 or 6 six for $7.99 and can be mixed. They had 4 different kinds of buns so I got the six buns special and picked 3 kinds. Here is my rating for the 3 buns: 1) Traditional pork buns - 5/5 ...it's like the shanghai soup dumpling but in a bun version! Be careful biting into it as you may not be expecting the hot juice coming out. 2) Pork and spicy sauerkraut- 5+/5 ...my favourite...I love the pickled spicy flavours of the vegetables and the pork was so tender! Although the bun looks small but it's stuffed generously. 3) Pork and cabbage - 4.5/5...simple but tasty! This is a nice choice to go with the other two that I mentioned. Honestly all the buns were really good. I bought the semi-cooked ones because the staff said it would taste really good if I steamed them for 8 mins when I got home. And she was right! I still have one more flavour to try so I'll be back for sure. I also notice a lot of people ordering the shanghai soup dumplings so I'll have to try that too next time! These buns are great for breakfast, lunch, snack or dinner!

The Shengjian Bao here are legit. I've been on the hunt for good ones since leaving Socal, trying many different places but nothing has come close. While these are not as good as what I remember from Socal/ Shanghai, I do think they are great, and I'll definitely be returning here. They are on the larger size. I was thinking initially that I may need to order 2 servings as each only comes with 4, but it turned out to be a decent amount of food (I wasn't overly hungry), with plenty of soup inside. The buns do take some time to be prepared, but come out hot and delicious. One of my buns did leak before I picked it up, but there was so much soup inside that it was still really juicy.

When they provided with a table it was right next to an exterior door, with people going in and out. The was a cold draft, we even had to tell the hostess/manager, if they could provide a divider to divert the draft from hitting our table. We ordered 9 dim sum dishes, one be Roasted Pig Mixed Cold Jellyfish, which was $23.80. I had the idea that it would be a fair portion. When it came, I was shocked, it was only 6 pieces of Roasted Pig. When I spoke with the manager about the portion size, he commented "for that price it is fair". There was not apologies and walked away, nor was it written on the menu. If I had known it was only 6 pieces (size of your index and middle finger put together). I would not have ordered it. If you want to have Roasted Pig, you can get better deals else where. Also, ordered Marinated Chicken Feet for $13.98, when it came to table, it was also a disappointment, part of the chicken feet was dark in colour, not even sure if it was even edible or not. Another dim sum dish that I have order was the steamed chicken with fish maw. The chicken was okay, but there was only two small pieces of fish maw, (the size of each piece was 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch). The order 6 dim sum dishes that was order was mediocre, tasted better from other Dim Sum restaurant. When I received the bill for the meal it came out to be $119.50, they even had included the tip. They didn't even give me an option weather a tip was even worthy. I will definitely not be returning to this place. I definitely do not recommend anyone to come to this restaurant. I would consider blacklisting this restaurant. It's simply deceiving customers.

The individual New Century slow boiled soup is hardest to share but secure some empty bowls and you can divide the hefty portion. In the winter, there's a silkiness to the piping hot consommé that sooths a dry throat and has an umami essence infused with abalone, ginseng, and pork. There's plenty to choose from in the house signature combo platter including roasted duck, soy sauce chicken, BBQ pork, pork slices, and seaweed salad. Saving my stomach for the later dishes, I had a taste of the duck (a good start with crispy skin) and BBQ pork (satisfactory and well flavoured). With the generous portion of chicken in the combo platter, the slow cooked chicken with abalone broth seemed like overkill. I've never been a huge fan of this dish that's served cold since I prefer chicken hot. Still, I understand it's the jelly layer between the skin and meat that people enjoy. And to be fair, the chicken was tender, and New Century certainly didn't skimp on the ginger and scallion oil. For those who tend to fill-up before the "main dishes", the stars of the combo arrive mid-meal. The stir-fried Vancouver crabs with silver fish in HK style spicy sauce needs to be eaten at arrival as the crunchy coating is best straight from the fryer. And despite not looking spicy, the dish has a light heat that permeates in the background. Additionally, the crab was fresh and meaty, cooked well so it remained delicately flakey. The amount of sweet and sticky sauce used in the stir-fried lobsters with scallion in Maggie sauce was well balanced, lightly covering the crustaceans. Both lobsters were substantial; even after eating many pieces, we still had plenty of leftovers. This is a long review head to Gastro World for the rest.

Parking still sucks, lol. As someone who isn't a huge fan of dim sum or the traditional dim sum tea, I was really happy to see that they now offer HK Style Milk Tea as well as various flavours of slushie and bubble tea offerings. As a milk tea lover, this alone would make me choose this place over another. :) The restaurant itself is quite spacious. When you enter, it's the front counter and a take out shelf (with LOTS of people ordering take out). There is a dining room to the left and to the right. I like that the tables are generously spaced apart, unlike some other dim sum places. Food wise, it's pretty decent, like any other dim sum place. I wouldn't say that it's anything special and no dish really stood out to me. We were a larger group so we ordered 2-3 rounds of stuff, and sometimes would just ask the server to add on a dish for us. I don't know if this was confusing for them or what because a lot of our dishes didn't end up coming. Of course, dishes that didn't come were not charged. The bill itself is a little confusing but they are happy to explain it to you. Instead of an itemized receipt, it is just multiple lump sums for tea charge, S/M/L items, special items, etc. Gratuities are already included.

In terms of value, the bbq pork with noodles was a giant portion and great lunch special deal at $15. Feeds 2 easily. Highly recommend. The dim sum dishes varied, typically just under $10 each. Pretty average pricing and mediocre quality. The pigeon was $20 but not done well. Tea was $2.50 per head which imo is too high for a place like this. The restaurant itself has the typical tacky decor with a rainbow of colours and lighting found in Chinese banquet restaurants of this vintage. It was clean and comfortable enough. A bit run down but fine. Plenty of free parking out front. Overall, solid average with an exceptionally good lunch time bbq pork noodle deal for value.

So we ordered Maggi Lobster (~3lbs) for $34/lb, and stir fried beef with Chinese broccoli (gai lan). The lobster was cooked perfectly, with the Maggi sauce not being too salty. They definitely gave us all the pieces of the 3lbs lobster. The gai lan had a bitter aftertaste, which is common for this vegetable. I wished they had a way to get rid of that. They were generous with the amount of beef and was well marinated. The cut wasn't that great, but that is to be expected. I don't think they added much MSG or at least used good quality ones, as we did not feel overly thirsty later in the evening. They give free daily soup and dessert. What we were most impressive was with the service. The waiters were very attentive, changing our plates twice during our 1ish hour meal.
