Dim Sum Review Smaller restaurant in far right of the large plaza but dim sum menu is decent. Food is good, ambience is minimal here. Servers were actually pretty nice and helpful to get translator if they couldn't converse in English with us. Lost star due to the floor manager was a bit rude however. She was rushing us out and bringing the next diners to our table before we had our jackets on. There's not a lot of room in between the tables to get around so why would they think that would be a good move? They charge everyone for tea, even the kids, they also charge for condiments. Hot sauce on a tiny dipping plate was thirty cents! Payment had 12% service taxed on bill. They tried to explain if paid by cash they can take that off, but if paid by credit card it's a mandatory. We were confused by this off the menu side note. Har Gow is a must order, they do a good job here. Huge, plump shrimp barely fits on the soup spoon. The rice wrapper on the dumpling is perfect sticky and chewy texture. The panfried eggplant and tofu were perfectly crispy and tasty. The side bean sauce wasn't very salty but nice for dipping. Sticky rice and chicken wrapped in lotus leaf had a beautiful aroma from the leaf. The rice was perfectly cooked and sticky, minced chicken stuffing was flavourful. Kids always love the steamed bbq pork bun. It's a little sweet from the bread to the bbq pork filling. Decent prices and good quality for dim sum if you're in the area. But not worth a long drive here.

Haven't eaten here in a while. Recently had dim sum for four on a Sunday morning around 11am. It was about a 10-15 minutes wait for a table. As always, the food was great. The quality and portions were consistent as usual. Their tofu fa and congee always hits the spot. They also have some new innovative items such as a truffle shrimp toast. It was different but traditional dim sum is preferre. My boyfriend ordered the durian pastry and it was really good. Highly recommend for durian lovers.

Ginger and Onion has early bird pricing for dim sum before 11am so this place is guaranteed to be busy in the mornings, especially on the weekends. The restaurant is tucked in the corner of the Alton Towers plaza and the inside is quite cramped as well. They have some unique dim sum items as well as a few old school, hard to find dim sums too. We tried their deep fried beef and enoki seaweed roll, steam bean curd roll, steamed vegetable dumpling, fish maw cotton chicken, mango pancake, rice roll with fried dough stick and baked BBQ pork bun. The beef enoki roll was crispy outside, tender inside. Bean curd roll tasted good and was tightly wrapped but their chopping of the ingredients inside is inconsistent, some were properly julienned others were whole large pieces. The spinach dumpling filling was great but wrapper was more soft than bouncy. Fish maw cotton chicken tasted great but wish there was more than 2 small pieces of fish maw. Rice roll with fried dough stick tasted good but the dough stick was under fried and very soft. The mango pancake didn't have much mango and the pieces that were in there were sour. Lastly the BBQ pork bun was just slightly undercooked inside so the dough was still white and gummy, an issue that might be solved by switching buns from the top/bottom rack of the oven, or wrapping without the bigger pinch of dough in the middle. We also got a Singapore Vermicelli that was cooked well, just lacking in a bit of salt. Overall, the food is okay and more worth if you're dining during the early bird morning period. They also add an automatic 12% gratuity to your bill which I only caught upon inspection of the bill as they didn't tell me.

We came in AFTER the morning rush on a weekend and discovered that we liked it! Arriving in the late afternoon there were no long line-ups. We were seated at a table much faster compared to the morning queues. The staff and servers were all very friendly, even joking with us. I like the idea of paying regular price for dim sum, since the restaurant was less busy and more tranquil. It was worth paying a bit more for the peace and ease. Ginger and Onion relocated to Alton Towers after shutting down their Markham location on Kennedy Rd beside Pacific Mall. My family frequented their old Markham location and we fondly miss their dim sum cart service. However since the switchover to ordering off menu, we've really noticed a difference in higher quality dim sum which tends to arrive at your table hotter and fresher. Their dinner menu is very good. They have CASH ONLY specials for dine-in that can't be combined with other specials. The Seafood and Lobster Set Family Dinners includes Stir-Fried Crab, Stir-Fried Lobsters, Steamed Chicken, Fried Vegetables, Steamed Fish and Dessert.

This little restaurant is tucked at the back of the plaza but it's definitely busy when we went for dim sum on the weekend! Their dishes are really good, portions are generous and I loved the wooden square steamers the food was served in! I especially loved their buns, stir fried dumplings and shrimp dumpling (har gow). If you go early enough Monday to Friday before 11am all their dim sum is one price! Def a neighbourhood gem and I'll definitely be back

3.5 Came here for dim sum on a weekday around 9:45 for their early morning specials. Mon-Fri before 11:30 all small, medium, and large are $4.38 and Saturdays is before 11:00 for $4.98. (Prices are as of end of Dec 2022) We were a table of four and got seated fairly quick and got our tea started (chrysanthemum pu'er). They also have free wifi but I did not try to see if it worked or not. Ended up getting around 11 dishes and all were pretty good. The siu mai was a bit on the softer side compared to some other places where it's more chewy. The har gow was gigantic. All portions were really good. The baked bbq pork bun had a nice matcha layer on top. The matcha was very very subtle. Overall not a bad place for dim sum. The service was fairly attentive and we got our tea pots refilled with water quickly whenever we had the lid opened to signal they were empty or low. Food came out quickly after ordering.

Food: 2 Stars Service: 1 Star Ambience: 3 Stars Fill Factor: Filling I don't know whether it was because they were busy or they were having a bad day but my latest experience here was absolutely terrible. It was a very busy day so we waited approximately 45 minutes for a table which is understandable but there was no excuse for the quality of food and the service. We came here for dim sum but decided to order a few other dishes as we were hungry. The dim sum for the most part was fine as you get good portions and the taste was fine. I can't say the same though about the congee/fried doughnuts, lobster and e-fu noodles, and the steamed egg dessert we ordered on top of the dim sum. The congee was so bland and the texture was almost like water unlike other congee I've had at other places. I am not very good at cooking but I can confidently say I can make a better congee than what we were served. The lobster and e-fu noodles also was a big letdown. It felt like they cooked the noodles, put the lobster on top and called it a dish. There was next to no sauce so the noodles were pretty flavourless even after we mixed the dish. Finally after all the disappointment we thought things would be sweeter with some dessert. Wow were we wrong. Continuing with the theme the steamed egg was totally bland and really didn't have that nice egg flavour either. To top off this whole experience the service was no good. Was it because it was busy and everyone was on edge? I don't know but overall it just wasn't pleasant. They made several mistakes with our order first missing a dish in we which we had to have corrected and then only after they dropped off the food at our table did we notice that they added an extra item after they fixed the missing item which we did not order (we had the ordering sheet in front of us). We let it go as it wasn't the end of the world but of course now we had too much food so we needed to pack some to go. They gave us two boxes but unfortunately we couldn't fit everything so we went to take one more small box to fit the other items. The waitress comes by and in an almost demeaning manner asks us to pay 30 whole CENTS for the box. I am fine with paying for the box but the way they spoke to us really annoyed me. I have never been to any restaurants that asked for money for a box so it was an honest mistake but to speak to us almost as if we were criminals after we just spent over $100 on a meal just really irked me. If you've read this far then you can probably guess that I won't be back. If you're just going for dim sum then it's a decent choice but for other dishes and service I cannot recommend it.

One of our favorite cities to enjoy Chinese Hong Kong style cuisine is in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Many Chinese immigrants from Southeast Asia moved to Toronto after the Vietnam War & 200,000 more immigrants from Hong Kong arrived during the 1980's & 1990's due to the takeover of Hong Kong by China in 1997. As they settled in Toronto & the Greater Toronto Area, these immigrants established huge Chinese shopping centers due to an abundance of land. They formed about six major Chinatowns, including North York, Scarborough, Markham, Richmond Hill, & originally downtown. Many new Chinese restaurants were established that catered to the Hong Kong immigrants. The Hong Kong style cuisine in Toronto (& in Vancouver & SFO) sets the bar, as the food is amazingly delicious & authentic that is not the same in my hometown in HNL. Quality seafood is used in abundance, corners are not cut in preparation, & presentation & the taste are important. One of these restaurants in Ginger & Onion Cuisine in Scarborough, a suburb of Toronto. I remember going to this popular restaurant back in 2014 when it was located at Market Village at Pacific Mall, a large Chinese shopping mall at the corner of Kennedy & Denison streets. It moved to its present location in 2017 at the Alton Tower Plaza, a Chinese shopping mall in Markham. We had dim sum there on two different mornings on our recent visit to Toronto. Ginger & Onion Cuisine offers a variety of dim sum from early morning to lunch & an extensive array of Chinese dishes during lunch & dinner. Whether it's dim sum or Chinese entrees, this restaurant is bustling w/ people coming & going for good eats. For dim sum, arrive early as they have one price for small, medium, & large dim sum if ordered by 11:30a. This is when they're the most busy, as people are trying to get those discounted items. If no tables are available, the hostess will give you a number on a slip of paper & will call your number when a table becomes available (we waited for about 15 min). Upon seating, you're given the menu that you can mark the items you want & the number of orders. You're asked what kind of tea you want (oolong, jasmine, green, etc.); as with most Chinese restaurants, there is a charge per person for hot tea. We had the following dim sum served in square bamboo steamers with the restaurant name on them: * Pork dumpling (4 pieces siu mai). I use this as a standard to assess the quality of dim sum at a restaurant. The siu mai are the size of gigantic golf balls & are so flavorful, bursting w/ juicy ground pork & generous amounts of whole shrimps. * Deep fried taro w/ minced pork (3 pieces). The exterior was non-oily & crispy, & the tasty interior consisted of soft & creamy taro paste. * Chiu chao dumpling (3 pieces). This savory dim sum had a perfectly thin & translucent skin that had flavorful ground pork, shrimp, chives, water chestnuts, & chopped peanuts. * Steamed spareribs w/ taro in black bean sauce. Generous portion of meaty spare ribs w/ taro, with the steam generating a tasty sauce w/ the black beans. * Sticky rice w/ chicken & egg in lotus leaf (3 pieces). So fresh & filling, the sticky rice was very moist & had generous amounts of chicken & egg. * Rice roll (cheong fun) w/ shrimp & veggie (3 pieces). This was so delicious, as the funn wrapped around huge whole shrimps & cooked choy sum veggies. You get a separate porcelain server for the special sweet sauce so that you can drizzle on as much sauce as you want. * Pork chop udon soup. Our grandson's choice, & he enjoyed it, which was a meal in itself. Yes, generous cuts of pork chops & udon in a savory soup broth. * Black sesame ball w/ ground peanuts (4 pieces). A nice dessert of springy glutinous rice covered w/ ground peanuts & filled w/ sweet & nutty black sesame paste. * Sweet bean curd and tofu in wooden barrel. Love this presentation of delicious silken tofu steamed in a wooden barrel & served with a sweet ginger sauce. As this dish takes 20 minutes to make, you'll need to put in your order as soon as you're seated. Service was attentive, w/ our orders being promptly delivered to our table within a reasonable amount of time. Dim sum dishes were cleared, & our plates were changed mid-way during our meal. Hot chili oil is popular as a condiment there & is available upon request, which we did not have any problems getting. When you're ready to pay, just wave your paper order in the air, & staff will come to you. Note that you need not leave a tip, as 10% is already added to your bill as a service charge. The restaurant has a smaller dining room to the left & a larger one on the right. It is bright with modern décor. Chinese chair covers are used. Located at McCowan & Steeles streets, there is ample parking in this complex. Hours of operation are daily from 8:30a to 9p. We look forward in returning to Ginger & Onion in the near future, as we know that its menu offerings are legit.

It's been a very busy place for dim sum. We came on Friday morning around 10, waited about 15min to sit in. Food quality are good, we ordered 10 dim sums, house special buns, excellent! Chicken feet, beef strips and pork ribs were all good with good portion. Deep fried milk was crispy as well. Only two dishes were a bit disappointed, ouduansilian and the chive pancake, avoid these two next time. They had charged 11% service fee in the bill, so don't pay additional tips on top of the total amount

We went in for dinner last night to celebrate mid autumn festival with my family. We have 7 adults and 1 kid. We ordered their suggested 6 to 8 people combo, there was a surcharge of $30 because it's a holiday weekend. We also added a full serving side of the Peking duck and caggabe bun for around $75 more. After the Peking duck (which look nothing like a whole duck and the serving looks only good for at most 2 people) and the rest of the dishes of the combo came in. We realized it was not enough and ordered 4 more dishes. Portions are extremely small, taste is expected, nothing really stand out. Also, though it's kind of like the new norm, but I don't believe businesses are legally entitled to just add tips in the bill. It's like they have taken it for granted. Don't get me wrong, I usually tip good, but just don't like this attitude of taking tips for granted. And I don't think the CRA accepts it, Right? Or did our Canadian government just compromised for it and let it slide?

$3.8 on SML before 11 on weekdays

Everything was actually fine before we found a piece of hair in the sticky rice (pearl chicken). We came at around 10:15a on a Friday morning, Hoping to get into the restaurant by 11 to take advantage of the $3.8 SML special. We got in and took a number, Was told that it will be very quick but it ended up to be a 45 minute wait. Ended up seated right at 10:59. But not to worry because the staff said they will still honor the special price even after 11 if you have been waiting there before 11. She will mark special on the dim sum sheet. So while you're waiting you can already look at the dim sum sheets and enter the order right when you sit down, more efficient. They are so busy that you just have to keep track of things and ask them to follow up on the order. The food overall was fine. Siu Mai is my favorite because it's so huge and meaty and flavorful. Other dishes was not bad. The chive pan fried dumpling I expect more chives but it's almost all shrimp paste. We have leftover to bring home for the two of us since wr ordered six dishes. Note The bill has 10% service charge already. At night when we were eating the Leftover dim sum for dinner, bf pulled out a long strand of hair embedded in the middle of the sticky rice. The fact that it's so inside the sticky rice makes me feels like it's the place that they sourced the dim sum may not be clean. So.... Idk, I want to like this place for its price and generally decent taste. But the cleanliness of the food makes me .

Like every dim sum restaurant, there's "Morning Special" pricing where all S/M/L dishes are the same price before 11am. On weekends, it's $4.98 each with cash payment. Unfortunately though, a lot of the menu is priced at "XL/SP/XP/J/XJ" which cost somewhere between $7.38-11.38 each. Pros: -Siu Mai pieces are huge so probably the best value order since it's classified as a L dish -BBQ Pork Pineapple Bun is tasty although the green shell is completely unnecessary since it doesn't taste like anything that would be green (i.e. matcha) Cons: -Very slow service, it took about an hour to receive some of the steamed dishes and we even had to cancel one at the end because they totally forgot it -They didn't serve any of the accompanying sauces (i.e. soy sauce, Worcestershire) because they were so busy -Hectic environment with crowds overflowing into the restaurant and hovering over my table while I was eating -They already ran out of Sweet Bean Curd (tofu dessert) before 10:15am on a Saturday morning.. -The Deep Fried Octopus Tentacles dish was a crazy $11.38!! And it had no flavour! -The Shrimp Paste in Tofu and Eggplant dish was overcooked and dry, with very little shrimp paste It's been so long since I've gone out for dimsum so it was a bit disappointing to come across so many cons. At this rate, I'd rather keep steaming my own dimsum at home.

The food was on point. Service was good. The ha gow was super huge. Will definitely come back again for dim sum.

Behind its unassuming exterior lies a dining room of quiet sophistication: modern, luminous interiors with tasteful appointments that signal immediately this is no ordinary Cantonese restaurant. The dim sum programme is where Moon Palace truly distinguishes itself. Each piece arrives with a precision and generosity of filling that speaks to genuine kitchen pride -- plump dumplings, impeccably fresh shrimp, and roasted meats that carry an unmistakable depth of flavour reminiscent of Hong Kong's finest teahouses. The quality of ingredients is evident in every bite; nothing here feels like an afterthought. What deserves particular commendation is the consistency. Over multiple visits, the standard has never wavered -- a hallmark of disciplined kitchen craft that is rarer than it should be. In a neighbourhood saturated with tourist-facing options, Moon Palace maintains an unwavering commitment to authenticity and refinement. Food 4/5 Service 4/5…read moreAmbiance 4/5 Food: I came here for a lunar New Year lunch with some co-workers. They chose the menu which was a combo deal. There were so many dishes I started losing track. LOL. I also don't know all the names of the dishes as I didn't see the menu. One of the dishes was a fried lobster. They showed the lobster to us (poor lobster) before cooking it. The lobster tasted really good but I'm not used to handling lobster in its shell. LOL. There was a pumpkin soup which I couldn't eat since it had dairy in it. Another dish was a Peking duck with rice paper wraps, cucumber & green onions. This was my favourite dish. Delicious, yummy & simple to eat. Another dish was chicken (I didn't taste that one). We also had a fried rice which was so yummy. Then there was a dish with scallops, oysters, pork & seaweed surrounding it. I tried the scallops & they were delicious. There was another duck dish but this time the duck was chopped into little pieces with some Dessert was a yogurt / jelly type of thing which I can't eat due to my dairy intolerance. Service was really great. I'm not sure if that's because I was at a table full of Chinese people though. LOL. The dishes came quickly & they just kept coming! We had tiny plates to eat from so after the lobster we got clean plates. For the fried rice we had the servers separate it into bowls for everyone. Since we couldn't finish all the food we had them wrap up the leftovers & we took it back with us. Myself & another co-worker split up the leftovers between us since no one else wanted it. Ambiance: The restaurant had some nice lunar new year decorations up. It was pretty. Located inside the Atrium on the Bay this is an easy location to get to. The location was the site of a former restaurant called Spring Rolls. It still looks the same the only thing that changed were the tables & chairs. The washrooms are downstairs in the lowest level of the restaurant. It was hard for me to get down there because my knees are really stiff & painful. It would've been nice if they had a handicap washroom on the main level. The food was delicious & service was attentive. I thought the special lunar new year meal we chose was too much food for six people. I would've been happy with dim sum. Also the washrooms being in the basement was an inconvenience for me. Those who are mobility challenged will have the same issue.

Both times were for lunch, and there was a large party both times. It was also a treat for me to show for the first time my Texas-based niece and nephew one of my favourite Chinatown places in Toronto. We were seated very quickly, despite the lunch rush. Very clean tables and floors, and a well-lit area. Since there were eight of us, we got the round table with a lazy Susan. We started with the chicken and corn soup, which heated us up quickly on a chilly January day. Then the dim sun arrived in numbers, from the delectable Har Gow, the scrumptious Siu Mai, the tasty deep-fried squid tentacles, the texture of the curried cuttlefish, and the interesting mouth-feel of chicken feet. Sizzling plates of beef in black bean sauce and shrimp/scallops in a Szechuan sauce were just epic, arriving to the table in a scathing aroma that made my mouth water. We had to balance all that great protein with some savoury Gai Lan, sautéed in garlic. All in all, we arrived in cold spirits, but left with full bellies! Thanks for showing my niece and nephew one of the best establishments on Spadina!

There was not apologies and walked away, nor was it written on the menu. If I had known it was only 6 pieces (size of your index and middle finger put together). I would not have ordered it. If you want to have Roasted Pig, you can get better deals else where. Also, ordered Marinated Chicken Feet for $13.98, when it came to table, it was also a disappointment, part of the chicken feet was dark in colour, not even sure if it was even edible or not. Another dim sum dish that I have order was the steamed chicken with fish maw. The chicken was okay, but there was only two small pieces of fish maw, (the size of each piece was 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch). The order 6 dim sum dishes that was order was mediocre, tasted better from other Dim Sum restaurant. When I received the bill for the meal it came out to be $119.50, they even had included the tip. They didn't even give me an option weather a tip was even worthy. I will definitely not be returning to this place. I definitely do not recommend anyone to come to this restaurant. I would consider blacklisting this restaurant. It's simply deceiving customers.

New Century will feed a large group. Their lobster, Dungeness crab, and sea bass combo for eight…read more($798) would satisfy ten or twelve. The individual New Century slow boiled soup is hardest to share but secure some empty bowls and you can divide the hefty portion. In the winter, there's a silkiness to the piping hot consommé that sooths a dry throat and has an umami essence infused with abalone, ginseng, and pork. There's plenty to choose from in the house signature combo platter including roasted duck, soy sauce chicken, BBQ pork, pork slices, and seaweed salad. Saving my stomach for the later dishes, I had a taste of the duck (a good start with crispy skin) and BBQ pork (satisfactory and well flavoured). With the generous portion of chicken in the combo platter, the slow cooked chicken with abalone broth seemed like overkill. I've never been a huge fan of this dish that's served cold since I prefer chicken hot. Still, I understand it's the jelly layer between the skin and meat that people enjoy. And to be fair, the chicken was tender, and New Century certainly didn't skimp on the ginger and scallion oil. For those who tend to fill-up before the "main dishes", the stars of the combo arrive mid-meal. The stir-fried Vancouver crabs with silver fish in HK style spicy sauce needs to be eaten at arrival as the crunchy coating is best straight from the fryer. And despite not looking spicy, the dish has a light heat that permeates in the background. Additionally, the crab was fresh and meaty, cooked well so it remained delicately flakey. The amount of sweet and sticky sauce used in the stir-fried lobsters with scallion in Maggie sauce was well balanced, lightly covering the crustaceans. Both lobsters were substantial; even after eating many pieces, we still had plenty of leftovers. This is a long review head to Gastro World for the rest.
