Crab XLB. Excitement captured - lots of soup inside. A few seconds before putting it into mouth.
    Aiko I.

    * I am a Xiao Long Bao (XLB) enthusiast, so I ordered XLB (Crab & Pork, takeout) only. Thus my review is quite limited. I mentioned in another Asian Legend (North York) location's review, this chain restaurant tastes different by location. This Dundas x Spadina is the closest one to my workplace. I have been here for XLB a few times before. But, my experiences were negative - inconsistent - sometimes, over-steamed, too salty, lack of crab flavor, and soup leaking. After a few disappointing experiences, I stopped coming here, and visited other places for XLBs as this area (Dundas x Spadina) is a mecca of XLBs. In spite of these experiences, I came back here today to respond to my urgent need - my crab XLB craving :). Also, I appreciate the places that are still serving crab XLBs more these days, as many places stopped making it due to the high food/labor cost. So, I should revisit this place again. Today's Crab XLB was the best in my experience of this location. The wrappers were thin, NO leak of soup, and good meat & soup ratio. The pleats were beautiful. Elegant. Satisfied. Thank you!

White guy walks Into random Asian restaurant with good results. Some language issues and the workers should get rid of their masks. Best item was the green onion pancake. Chicken fried rice could have been great, but some pieces of white chicken were sketchy. The veggie potsickers had some promise too.

If you're in the area and overwhelmed by food options, worries about flavour, quality, service, seating comfort...come to Asian Legend. Specialized in Northern Chinese dim sum they have a variety of dumplings, steamed buns, potstickers, deep-fried pancakes for a simpler meal, or you can order a full dinner with stir-fry, soups and stews, noodles and rice. There's something for everyone, though vegetarian options are limited. The last time I was here was years ago but this time did not disappoint at all! The dumpling skin was not too thick, the meat filling was plentiful and flavourful, and food came out quickly piping hot. You can't go wrong with an order of xiaolongbao--steamed pork and shrimp soup bun, and some scallion/green onion pancakes. Notable items included their "Silver" steamed bun, which you can get deep fried (highly recommend) - it is a simple steamed bun from the outside but inside you will see little sections. Splitting up the bun with the "grain" reveals that the pieces inside actually tear away like string cheese - a sign of excellent handiwork by the kitchen to achieve this quality. Accompanied with sweet condensed milk, this is both an appetizer and a dessert item loved by many for its simplicity and enjoyable eating experience. Service was attentive and kept our teapot filled throughout the meal, and ordering is made easy with the many pictures in the menu and clear numbering system for menu items. Consistently one of the cleanest and most reliable chains in town, so always an easy go-to when in doubt on what to eat. Prices have gone up with the times but are still worth it and relatively affordable - we walked away at $20 a person before tips. Their front entrance and their washroom is one downside - it is not accessible because of a steep set of stairs even to their main dining area, and another set downwards (two in total) to the washroom. The washroom is also small and narrow stalls which feel quite tight because of the heavy stall doors (which depending on the weather may not close properly either). Tough to renovate for such things, so do keep in mind if those are of concern - consider takeout instead!

We had a team member who was leaving work to pursue his dream job and we took him out for lunch. This place was suggested and quickly liked by a few. The restaurant managers/owners generally I think underestimate the power of mentioning a bit more details on the menu or at least a server who is knowledgeable about ingredients. In the absence of information I went the safest route of ordering a plain congee and a steamed bun. My order would easily have been more than double if the right information was provided. So on the limited items that I could have, my review is not a review per se. One cannot mess up a Congee and a bun. However the food did not arrive all together and out of respect for others, all of us had to wait. Which resulted in food going cold. The congee and bun were as good as they can be

This is a really great place for authentic Chinese food! I've ordered a variety of their foods, from xiao long bao to hot and sour soup to Peking duck. All of it is delicious, it's not the best Chinese food I've ever had but it's pretty darn good and hits the spot. The atmosphere is great, clean and modern. It looks like a high-end restaurant, but the prices are very reasonable! Service is generally good, but it kind of depends on the day. That's the only reason I'm holding back from 5 stars.

What a serious gem. Came here on a David Chang recommendation and was definitely not disappointed. Being met with the same apathy and authenticity as any of the best Chinese restaurants in nyc along with only Asian people eating in the dinning room I knew it was legit. We got some dim sum, pork dumplings, xio long bao soup dumplings, Baby bok choy, shrimp things (pictured) and a seafood fried rice. So full. So cheap. They have beer and teas. Everything we had we spent like $60? Maybe less. Including beer and tip. Highly reccomend.

Not bad but quality control should be supervised. We order probably once a month and food quality is a hit or miss. Like today, broccoli was old. Some time the beef noodles, the beef is tough.

I've been to the restaurant a few times now and I can say that the food is solid. Not the best Chinese food I've had but nonetheless the food is good here. I'm a fan of dumplings so I tend to order different types each time I'm here. So far I've enjoyed each type that I've tried (steam soup filled and vegetarian). Hope to try them all some day. We also had the mapo tofu which is our favourite dish here and we've also had fried rice and meat dishes which were good as well. The food arrived quickly and the servers were fairly friendly and checked in on us often so I am pleased with the service. In terms of the restaurant space itself, they have tables on two floors. They usually do not open up the tables downstairs unless it is packed upstairs so there is quite a bit of space in the restaurant. If you're in the Chinatown area Asian Legend is a fairly good option if you're craving Chinese food.

Dropped by the Asian Legend on Dundas for a quick dinner. There's both an upstairs section and a downstairs section. The upstairs section contains the bulk of the seating, but there's a large room for private, larger parties, and a smaller seating area downstairs. We got seated upstairs - the dining room has a nice view of Dundas because the facade is basically all one window, which was important for us because we needed to figure out if it was raining or not. The menu is pretty extensive but also pretty typical of a Chinese restaurant - I didn't find anything particularly exciting that you wouldn't be able to find anywhere else down Spadina. Service was a little strange - it seems like they aren't quite in sync. We were approached by two waiters within about five minutes asking if we were ready to order. We got the shredded pork in chili sauce and an order of the beef wrapped in chive pancake. Both were pretty blah - nothing bad, but I've definitely had better. The portions for the plate dishes are huge though - for the two of us, we ate until we were full, and were able to pack a good amount back home. Overall, a very solid but unmemorable dining experience, especially considering the fact that we were in the middle of Chinatown and could have probably gone anywhere else. Considering the portions, it was priced very reasonably.

Early enough to beat the lunch crowd!

It's definitely one of the cleanest restaurants in Chinatown. If this is what you're after read no more. We order just two simple noodles, and both disappointed. The spicy noodle was by far the worse. First of all, it wasn't spicy. In fact I can't remember the last time it was spicy. The soup base lack life. Never again will I order this at this location. The dai lo mein was missing sea cucumber and a host of other stuff. Felt ripped. Oh well. At least the place looked clean .

never see that $18.01 again.... :(

Food 4/5 Service 4/5…read moreAmbiance 4/5 Food: I came here for a lunar New Year lunch with some co-workers. They chose the menu which was a combo deal. There were so many dishes I started losing track. LOL. I also don't know all the names of the dishes as I didn't see the menu. One of the dishes was a fried lobster. They showed the lobster to us (poor lobster) before cooking it. The lobster tasted really good but I'm not used to handling lobster in its shell. LOL. There was a pumpkin soup which I couldn't eat since it had dairy in it. Another dish was a Peking duck with rice paper wraps, cucumber & green onions. This was my favourite dish. Delicious, yummy & simple to eat. Another dish was chicken (I didn't taste that one). We also had a fried rice which was so yummy. Then there was a dish with scallops, oysters, pork & seaweed surrounding it. I tried the scallops & they were delicious. There was another duck dish but this time the duck was chopped into little pieces with some Dessert was a yogurt / jelly type of thing which I can't eat due to my dairy intolerance. Service was really great. I'm not sure if that's because I was at a table full of Chinese people though. LOL. The dishes came quickly & they just kept coming! We had tiny plates to eat from so after the lobster we got clean plates. For the fried rice we had the servers separate it into bowls for everyone. Since we couldn't finish all the food we had them wrap up the leftovers & we took it back with us. Myself & another co-worker split up the leftovers between us since no one else wanted it. Ambiance: The restaurant had some nice lunar new year decorations up. It was pretty. Located inside the Atrium on the Bay this is an easy location to get to. The location was the site of a former restaurant called Spring Rolls. It still looks the same the only thing that changed were the tables & chairs. The washrooms are downstairs in the lowest level of the restaurant. It was hard for me to get down there because my knees are really stiff & painful. It would've been nice if they had a handicap washroom on the main level. The food was delicious & service was attentive. I thought the special lunar new year meal we chose was too much food for six people. I would've been happy with dim sum. Also the washrooms being in the basement was an inconvenience for me. Those who are mobility challenged will have the same issue.

Both times were for lunch, and there was a large party both times. It was also a treat for me to show for the first time my Texas-based niece and nephew one of my favourite Chinatown places in Toronto. We were seated very quickly, despite the lunch rush. Very clean tables and floors, and a well-lit area. Since there were eight of us, we got the round table with a lazy Susan. We started with the chicken and corn soup, which heated us up quickly on a chilly January day. Then the dim sun arrived in numbers, from the delectable Har Gow, the scrumptious Siu Mai, the tasty deep-fried squid tentacles, the texture of the curried cuttlefish, and the interesting mouth-feel of chicken feet. Sizzling plates of beef in black bean sauce and shrimp/scallops in a Szechuan sauce were just epic, arriving to the table in a scathing aroma that made my mouth water. We had to balance all that great protein with some savoury Gai Lan, sautéed in garlic. All in all, we arrived in cold spirits, but left with full bellies! When they provided with a table it was right next to an exterior door, with people going in and out. The was a cold draft, we even had to tell the hostess/manager, if they could provide a divider to divert the draft from hitting our table. We ordered 9 dim sum dishes, one be Roasted Pig Mixed Cold Jellyfish, which was $23.80. I had the idea that it would be a fair portion. When it came, I was shocked, it was only 6 pieces of Roasted Pig. When I spoke with the manager about the portion size, he commented "for that price it is fair". There was not apologies and walked away, nor was it written on the menu. If I had known it was only 6 pieces (size of your index and middle finger put together). I would not have ordered it. If you want to have Roasted Pig, you can get better deals else where. Also, ordered Marinated Chicken Feet for $13.98, when it came to table, it was also a disappointment, part of the chicken feet was dark in colour, not even sure if it was even edible or not. Another dim sum dish that I have order was the steamed chicken with fish maw. The chicken was okay, but there was only two small pieces of fish maw, (the size of each piece was 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch). The order 6 dim sum dishes that was order was mediocre, tasted better from other Dim Sum restaurant. When I received the bill for the meal it came out to be $119.50, they even had included the tip. They didn't even give me an option weather a tip was even worthy. I will definitely not be returning to this place. I definitely do not recommend anyone to come to this restaurant. I would consider blacklisting this restaurant. It's simply deceiving customers.

The individual New Century slow boiled soup is hardest to share but secure some empty bowls and you can divide the hefty portion. In the winter, there's a silkiness to the piping hot consommé that sooths a dry throat and has an umami essence infused with abalone, ginseng, and pork. There's plenty to choose from in the house signature combo platter including roasted duck, soy sauce chicken, BBQ pork, pork slices, and seaweed salad. Saving my stomach for the later dishes, I had a taste of the duck (a good start with crispy skin) and BBQ pork (satisfactory and well flavoured). With the generous portion of chicken in the combo platter, the slow cooked chicken with abalone broth seemed like overkill. I've never been a huge fan of this dish that's served cold since I prefer chicken hot. Still, I understand it's the jelly layer between the skin and meat that people enjoy. And to be fair, the chicken was tender, and New Century certainly didn't skimp on the ginger and scallion oil. For those who tend to fill-up before the "main dishes", the stars of the combo arrive mid-meal. The stir-fried Vancouver crabs with silver fish in HK style spicy sauce needs to be eaten at arrival as the crunchy coating is best straight from the fryer. And despite not looking spicy, the dish has a light heat that permeates in the background. Additionally, the crab was fresh and meaty, cooked well so it remained delicately flakey. The amount of sweet and sticky sauce used in the stir-fried lobsters with scallion in Maggie sauce was well balanced, lightly covering the crustaceans. Both lobsters were substantial; even after eating many pieces, we still had plenty of leftovers. This is a long review head to Gastro World for the rest.
