We had heard there was a new chef at Red's Bistro and decided to dine there on New Year's Eve. While the restaurant is well appointed and the service was good, the food - and the portions - were below par. Two of us ordered the scallops. What we received was a plate containing three scallops on a bed of risotto that was so thick it was akin to Mac N Cheese. $43.00. I suppose the logic in the kitchen was to provide enough heft on the plate with the risotto to fill the belly of the unlucky sod who ordered the skimpy dish. One other small detail: the server took my empty wine glass, but did not ask if I wanted another. Was I being cut off after one glass? Last night was the first night I've been to Reds Bistro. Quaint and comfortable bistro for sure. Parking can be a challenge however. I ordered the filet mignon. Although it was good, I was a tad bit disappointed. I ordered my filet butterflied well-done it came butterflied, but still very red inside. No one followed up on how my steak was. Sigh. We enjoyed a charcuterie board. However, it would've been nice to have each item, or at least the cheeses and meats, identified. The food here is PHENOMENAL, and the service is just as good. We've been here twice now and we've seen both sides of Red's. We've been in on an early Thursday evening where service was so fast, so efficient and the food was so good. We also went this last night on a busy Saturday when it was absolutely packed out. They were running out of food left and right and had a few delays, and they handled it with such professionalism and just stayed a well-oiled machine. Your high end restaurants are only as good as their worst scenarios and situations. Obviously you never prepare to run out of your special, and certain sides, deal with slow turnaround, and several parties who were less than kind to the wait staff about it. But I saw the owner running table to table talking with folks, our waitress was a rockstar and was doing her best, and despite all that they were facing the food was still a perfect 10. Our party ordered a couple of the filet mignons, the duck, pork chop, salads, sourdough appetizer, the salmon crostini appetizer and everything was 10/10. I cannot recommend this place enough. We were out celebrating my dear friend's birthday and last minute decided to go to Red's. From the minute we walked in until we left it was a great experience. Upon arrival we were met by the lovely Steven who asked if we had reservations. Since it was a last minute decision, we did not, but a table just happened to open up right as we got there. The interior is cute, quaint and comfortable. The cocktails were delicious! We split the two specials of the day - pecan crusted halibut and filet mignon between the three of us which was perfect!! The presentation was lovely! We also had their yummy sourdough bread which I highly recommend. Our server Steven just made the experience even better. He was personable and fun! Sadly we couldn't find room for dessert, but Steven was so thoughtful and brought out a small dessert with a candle for my friend. That was really the icing on the cake. I use to really enjoy Red's. I went recently for my wife's birthday dinner. We were greeted by a less than welcoming guy at the podium. It was 7p on a Tuesday and there was maybe 10 people total in the place. Plenty of open seating. The manager didn't want to seat us in a booth because it wasn't past 8p. He didn't really have much customer service skills at all. I thought he was joking at first because he told me in with such a flat face. Then came the server who seemed somewhat bothered to be doing her job. We heard a couple next to us comment that just because the server may have had a bad day she didn't need to be that way. The food quality also wasn't what it has been in the past. The owner maybe needs to be there more to ensure these people practice better customer service that's welcoming and it feels like they enjoy their jobs. There are plenty of options, so I won't be going back, and it's a shame because I like the physical atmosphere, but the bad vibes negate that now. read more

I'm so mad that I've known about this place and have continued to drive by it for years. Until last night. Made resys ( but prob didn't need em) and bought my folks on a Thursday night. We were immediately welcomed by such amazing ambience and decor. There were 2 separate wine bar areas to sit at , a large dining area and all the booths and chairs are velvet. It has a fantastic old-school speakeasy feel. Brilliant details like the light-up bathroom mirror , light gold metal bars chairs and dark tile-under-the-bar was gorgeous. The service was awesome. We had Jayne, who was friendly, knowledgeable and sassy. The food was amazing. We started with the shroom truffle crostini. My folks aren't usually truffle fans but they were wiping up the leftovers with their fingers. I had chicken added to the warm kale salad and I'm kicking myself for not asking what the flavors were that were making my mouth so happy. The rest of my people got the burgers and wouldn't shut up about how great they were. Perfectly medium rare cooked also, as we are all high-maintenance burger connoisseurs. We opted for a local "Small Ass" cab-merlot that was good but the rest of the wine list was quite lovely, albeit a tad spendy. But we never see a Pride wine on any list, so that made us extra happy. From the dimly-lit ( but not too dim) room to the holiday touches to the music, this place was delightful. I'll have to get over not going sooner, but now that I've been, you bet I'll be back. After a long day we decided to visit Red's Bistro in Loomis to unwind and hopefully have a nice dinner. The restaurant was not too busy and we were greeted warmly, choosing to dine at the bar so that we could watch the food prep - always entertaining! The service was attentive without interrupting us and we were quickly served our water and drinks. We ordered salad to share and two entrees which were all prepared very well and tasted great. Good job! It was also fun to view the appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts being finished at the pass and taken out to the diners. It is on the smaller side, but not too noisy. The service is always great. I have been coming off and on for a few years, it is on the pricey side so it has to be special occasions but when I want to have steak or potatoes or carrots or anything, what ever they serve is cooked by a chef and tastes phenomenal especially the steaks. Serving size is good, many others have cut back on serving size so I really appreciate that they haven't yet. Very casual, people wear what ever they were walking around town in. I often order a pork chop at "fancy" restaurants because I tend to overcook them at home. So I ordered the pork chop ... and it was over cooked. We have been regulars here for years. Red's was a place that we knew we could find consistent and reliable service, wholesome and familiar dishes, and a normal menu. The interior is inviting, though drafty depending on your seat. Gwen and Joe kept us returning as well. We were treated as normal restaurant patrons - meaning nothing special, nothing sub-par, but we had also frequented so much that we treated like family. We've brought several people here when they were visiting from out of town and they all loved it too. We actually specifically requested Gwen in our reservation, who was unfortunately off for a personal thing that night. It would have been nice if they could have let us know since they can see those notes on reservations. There was a different person tending to the host stand as well, usually a lovely lady is there but on Saturday stood Russ and ... someone. And it was cold the moment we arrived. We haven't been able to come in much this past year and BOY has it changed. After a little digging we found that Red's got a new chef this past October. After more digging we found that is the FOURTH chef in a year. The last time we were there we heard about a new chef too so now we're talking about 6 chefs in 3 years. That speaks volumes in the restaurant industry about restaurant management. And it's clearly spoken to your customers as you can see in reviews from the last year. What I can also see is that you don't care. You haven't responded to any of the reviews. Russ and Karen, I think you need to take a look around because you're losing good, loyal customers. And over some real quality problems. You overhauled your menu, which is expected a bit when a new chef comes in, they put their twist on things. But you decided to no longer offer a dozen oysters for $36, and instead sell these new-age oysters for $5 a pop, on a bed of rocks. Now I will say this... yuzu jalapeño oyster thing wasn't awful. But if we wanted flashy, hip oysters we'll go downtown or to a gentrified area. Not the heart of Loomis, where people are attracted to the good old ways. You just shot your consumer price up almost 100% for the same amount of oysters filled with things that we don't want. Your sourdough is not a sourdough any longer. You use a lot of wheat flour and what we got was extremely over proofed. It was dense and gummy. Now I'm not an oyster expert but I do bake a lot of sourdough and I can tell you that especially compared to what you used to have, this was absolutely dismal. Moving on to the beet salad with goat cheese, or shall I call it, the double goat cheese salad with some beets and shaved apples - I wish I took a picture of this before we tried it. The focus was clearly on presentation alone. The beets were diced small, there were diced chunks of hard cheese in it, and it was absolutely smothered in some sort of goat cheese sauce. Moving on to the entrees that we received 45 minutes late, as the server said the kitchen was very backed up. The special was the swordfish, it was okay. Nothing special but at least more flavorful than my scallops. I wish I read the reviews prior to ordering it and can confirm the reviews are 100% on point. The 3 scallops are small and overcompensated by the hefty amount of Mac-and-cheese like risotto. So thick. So much butter. Risotto should be buttery and creamy yes but this very much akin to a Mac and cheese. And, besides the flavor of butter there was zero flavor. The scallops were over salted, so at least that sort of made up for it for lack of flavor and seasoning in the risotto. The menu also listed micro greens with this, as if to signify there might be a side of greens - no, it was 3 tiny pieces of garnish. The inconsistency in the menu design with how garnishes or sides are listed is misleading. All in all a very disappointing $200 meal (2 glasses of wine as well). Reading the reviews last night was disheartening. At this point, if we do return, it will solely be because we love Gwen, Joe and Steven. And the wine. Your wine at least has yet to disappoint. read more

I had to borrow my companion's spoon because I could not get his attention to ask for another. And, had to flag him down to get the check. Upon arriving at Reds' I was a little confused about the interior decor - it was a little farm house a little modern and then had a beautiful antique bar. I couldn't really understand the vibe. However, we asked to be sat outside in their patio area and it was adorable! With twinkling lights strung and Vulfpeck playing softly in the background the environment was perfect for date night, girls night out, or even a casual dinner. Ordering from their fall menu, We started with half a dozen oysters. The oysters were fresh and shucked perfectly. Priced at $21/half dozen the price point was not too bad and the quality was good. We then shared their field green salad. The salad portion is huge and is definitely enough for two people. While the salad only has three ingredients and may appear plain, the generous portion of manchego on top make it easily one of my favorite salads I've ever had. I enjoyed it so much that I bought some manchego on the way home to make it myself (but mine somehow doesn't taste as good). For entrees we split the grilled red snapper and the little neck clams and bone marrow. I started with the clams and bone marrow. The sauce on the clams was brilliant. The bone marrow was melting in my mouth and the perfectly toasted crostini paired amazingly. I actually enjoyed my clams dish so much that I didn't want to switch with My boyfriend. If I could find out how that broth was made I'd probably eat it every day. The grilled red snapper was flavorful and moist. I particularly enjoyed the arancini that it was served with. The lobster puree was the perfect dipping sauce. For dessert, we shared the pineapple upside down cake and the s'mores crème brûlée. I was skeptical of the crème brûlée because I've only ever had the traditional version and the idea of s'mores didn't appeal to me so much. However, the combination of the chocolate flavored tart and the marshmallow was ingenious. The crispy caramelized top was as always, my favorite. The pineapple upside down cake was warmed and served with a cool side of homemade cream. I was so happy that the cake didn't have a maraschino cherry on it - it felt much more elegant. The fresh cream paired perfectly. Other than the delicious meal, the service was superb. Our server Corinne made great recommendations throughout the meal, made sure our waters were always filled, and had the biggest smile on her face. I saw another server that kept taking off her mask, Corinne didn't and I appreciated that. Our check was presented to us with two small espresso macarons from a local bakery - the finishing touch on a great meal. To add to everything, our bill for two appetizers, two entrees, two desserts, two glasses of wine, and coffee was only about $125. For the quality of the food and the service that was truly a steal. Ok guys I've found it. The food snob from the Bay has located a French restaurant with incredible food and a comfortable atmosphere in the greater Sacramento area. Gems like this are few and far between up here. The location is quaint, modern, and comfortable in downtown Loomis. The ceilings are high, brick decorates the walls, and natural wood beams accentuate the height and structure. Lighting is modern and cozy, creating an intimate vibe. The staff is fantastic. Everyone is friendly and just relaxed enough to not create anxiety but not so relaxed that they would miss even a single detail. We were seated quickly at a corner table and the team helping us was prompt, courteous, and thorough in covering the specials, wine selection, and favorite entrees from the menu. Ok, onto the important stuff (at least to me). Food and wine. The wine selection emphasized quality over quantity. It listed familiar vineyards, and, some not so familiar including local wineries. We selected a Cabernet-Merlot blend from a Loomis vineyard called "Small A$$ Vineyard" (aptly named after their two donkeys) and it was fantastic. While the selection was not long nor short, it didn't lack in character in terms of offering or breadth. The food. We have lived in the area for three years and I can say, with confidence, that Chef Daniel has prepared, without any doubt or hesitation, the best meal we have had in the greater Sacramento area. We were provided an amuse-bouche with salmon, duck paté, and warm delicious bread. That was followed by two appetizers - the citrus-beet salad and a half dozen oysters, three Kumamoto and three from somewhere I wish I could remember from the East coast. For the main course, we enjoyed the chef's special - duck confit (with lentils and a spectacular kumquat marmalade) and I had to splurge and get the filet. The duck was expertly prepared, as was the filet, and the filet was lightly seasoned to perfection. The filet had sides of chard and potatoes making it not only delicious but also filling. We ended the meal with their crème brûlée. I am not sure how they do it, but the top was perfect to caramelized and the crème itself remained silky soft and cool. It was topped with mint, citrus, and raspberry. Absolutely divine. I'm not a fan of writing glowing reviews and would prefer to have some constructive criticism to keep it balanced. But here, I don't have any criticism, only compliments. A+ all around. We will absolutely be back. read more

Nice place for ambiance and good service, but food left something to be desired. To be fair, this was a couple months ago and I mostly forgot what we ate. What I do remember was ordering the baked brie - twice! First time it was cold, near frozen on the inside. We sent it back and next order was a little better but again cold on the inside. And one of the spotlights above our table was very bright so we asked them to dim it a little, which they did, but another server turned it back up a few minutes later and seemed annoyed that we had it dimmed so we didn't ask again. Not sure what was going on that night but based on our experience we probably would not go back. Others seemed to enjoy their meal that evening so may have just been us. read more
