    Financier!!
    April F.

Stopped by the central coast creamery to get some cheese and noticed this bakery. People were entering and exiting so that's always a great sign of popularity. I entered the open and airy establishment and staff was welcoming! A friendly baker approached me and asked if she could assist. I told her what I had in mind and she suggested an almond financier and a banana cream cheese blondie. The financier is absolutely delicious! Moist and topped with sliced almonds and berries, that is definitely a repeat! The cashier was friendly as well. So glad I stopped by. If I'm in the area, I'll be back to try more!

I've been to Proof & Gather a few times now, usually thanks to the Too Good To Go app (which is such a fun way to try their pastries), but I almost always end up ordering something fresh while I'm there. This time I had their English muffin sandwich, and it was worth the wait. The English muffins are homemade (and you can even buy them on their own), the bacon was really good, and they stacked two eggs with cheese and what seemed like a house-made sauce that pulled everything together. It felt thoughtful and satisfying, not just thrown together. One thing to know: this is a small place and they take their time preparing food. If you're in a rush, plan ahead. I made the mistake of stopping in on my way to work, and it's definitely more of a "slow down and enjoy" kind of spot. Their case is filled with a variety of unique pastries, along with fresh homemade sourdough and focaccia, which makes it hard to leave without grabbing something extra. They also had some really tempting savory options and beautiful toast (I saw one with goat cheese that I'll be going back for).

Great place for coffee and pastries. Had a central coast toast for breakfast and all the ingredients tasted really fresh and good. Service is super friendly and the space is airy and modern.

Not sure if this is recently closed or not but I was here earlier this month. It's co-located with Central Coast Creamery and Deli and is pretty much a breakfast/lunch spot in Tin City. We got an Egg Sandwich and Deli Sandwich and they were simple but still good. The bread is nicely baked with good chew. It's a cafe type of vibe so pretty straightforward and a good stopping point if you're here for a quick bite. We were picking up some stuff at Etto's Pasta Shop just across the road. Service was nice and pretty standard.

They have limited selections of pastries but what they have is good. We got a breakfast sando which was tasty and just the right size to share (for us). They don't have drip coffee so an Americano is the closest thing, but a bit too watery. The cappuccino was good but they were out of raw sugar packets. They did offer their baking sugar to put in. The nice lady taking our order also made our coffees. They have comfortable seating both inside and out. Overall, it's a good stop in Tin City.

What a nice find while waiting for the wine bars to open in Tin City. Can't believe there hasn't been a lot reviews for this place! Scones are amazing. Cinnamon Roll delicious - affogato strong but a little expensive for $8. Will definitely come back when we return to Paso.

Previously operating her own daycare, test batches of Bread developed after an internet search often finding their way home with pupils and their parents, July 2025 finally saw Kopper open up shop at 1306 Pine Street where her goods now frequently sell-out daily. Working exclusively with a Sourdough starter named Dough-Rita, even Black Sheep's Cookies subject to traditional fermentation, guests now will find both sweet and savory treats alongside full loaves with clever names like "The Basic B" and "Mob Boss." Originally sold at the Paso Robles Farmers Market, opening of a storefront delayed as she relied on friends and family for everything from paint to plumbing, May 2026 now sees Paula regularly trying new things ranging from hefty Cinnamon Rolls to an absolutely stellar Sourdough Blondie that starts sweet and sticky before dissipating with an almost boozy sort of linger. Leaning into the "Black Sheep" name with some clever signage, a Sourdough "Cinny Roll" weighty beneath tangy Icing, those looking for something breakfast-y will note Scones and "Breaky Bombs," or their sweet brethren called "Lachee" filled with Fruit and Cream Cheese riffing on Czech Kolaches.

THE BLACK AND WHITE: I find myself to be a sourdough expert *sarcasm*. This micro-bakery is legit. Smells like sourdough inside and every bakery item they have uses starter. For food, we got the sausage egg and cheese breaky bomb and the sourdough cinny rolls. The cinny rolls was too sweet for my liking, but still very good. the breaky bombs were so good which makes it the move to get imo. THE FINAL BAMBOO: The cost for the two pastries was around $15. The pastries were pretty big, so i'd recommend grabbing a few pastries to load up the belly before wine tasting.

I could barely see the pastries in the case. No worries though, I saw what I came in for. Purchased a French baguette for $3.70. Beyond amazed at the price. Excited to have some with my coffee, I ripped off a piece almost immediately and noticed the nice crust on the outside. 5 stars for the crust!! As for the flavor, it seemed a little flat. It was lacking some of the wheaty-tangy flavor you would get from a longer prove/fermentation. The inside of it was also missing all those nice deep pockets you see in a French baguette. Overall, not a bad baguette, but not one that you yearn for. I'd like to mention the young lady Annabel I had the privilege of meeting outside of the bakery. That seems popular and everyone sitting near me, was eating the almond one.

They were open and we were feeling a bit peckish and can always make room for a donut or two. So we made a U turn and off we went. The shop is on a corner lot with its own parking lot. Plenty of street parking as well. As we walked in , I quickly saw the glass counter full of picture perfect, colorful donuts sitting pretty waiting for us. These donuts were beautiful. No crinkling and buckling in the frosting. Donut frosting is tricky to get smooth. So many different types of donuts making it hard to decide. We ordered a couple of cake donuts (vanilla with pink frosting and chocolate on chocolate) and a raised chocolate glaze. Mmm. The raised donut was light and airy with the prefect slight yeasty chew. The chocolate glaze was awesome. I've eaten a lot of donuts in my lifetime, these are 5 stars. Besides donuts they serve other pastries; scones, danishes, croissants, and cookies. Breakfast burritos and breakfast sandwiches $8.95. Quiche ( whole $29.95 or slice $6.95). Local Steins bagels $4 toasted with cream cheese. There is no seating indoors. There were a few tables out on the lawn.We sat at one of the outside tables under the big ole shade tree. Leisurely eating our donuts taking a slow down and soaking in life.

Michelin Madness: How a French Restaurant Stole a Cowboy's Soul…read more For my birthday, my sister and I decided to celebrate in proper California fashion: by surrendering ourselves to a Michelin-recommended French restaurant where every plate arrives looking like it should be insured by Lloyd's of London. We bravely ordered the Chef's Tasting Menu with the accompanying wine pairing, fully expecting to leave two hours later and immediately detour to the nearest drive-thru for a double cheeseburger and perhaps a pepperoni pizza "for medicinal purposes." Reader... it never happened. Something extraordinary occurred. The evening began innocently enough with Ayu, peach, shiso salad and cherry. I have no earthly idea how peaches, cherries and fish negotiated such a successful peace treaty, but diplomats from around the world should study this dish. Next arrived a shrimp dumpling with Swarnadwipa spices, fennel and tamarind. One bite and I briefly considered apologizing to every shrimp I'd ever underestimated. The burrata with asparagus, white peach and pistachio cracker was so outrageously creamy that I nearly stood up and applauded. My sister actually looked offended that cheese had achieved such perfection without consulting her first. Then came the Jidori egg with lemongrass, miso spinach and pine nuts. Somewhere, every breakfast egg I've ever eaten quietly filed for early retirement. Just when I thought the kitchen had reached cruising altitude, out floated Hirame sashimi with strawberry, umeboshi and mint. This dish had no business being that elegant. It was like Fred Astaire wearing scuba gear. The Mount Lassen trout in dashi broth with broccoli arrived looking calm and understated... rather like someone who knows they're the smartest person in the room and doesn't need to mention it. Then the evening entered dangerous territory. The white corn tortelloni with morel mushrooms and truffle emulsion was so good that conversation at the table ceased entirely. There are moments in life when words fail. This was one of them. We simply nodded at each other as though participating in an ancient French religious ceremony. Finally, the dry-aged Flannery rib-eye with charred onion and arugula pesto arrived to remind everyone that civilization peaked sometime around the invention of perfectly aged beef. Now, let's discuss the wine pairings. Each glass appeared exactly when needed, as though summoned telepathically by the kitchen. And then there was the sommelier. Good heavens. The fellow arrived with a confident smile and a dramatic shock of hair perpetually falling across one eye like he'd wandered in from the cover of French Sommeliers Monthly. My poor sister was hanging on every word while trying very hard to remember how breathing worked. Every time he poured another wine she looked as though she'd just spotted George Clooney carrying a Bordeaux. I'm reasonably certain she was prepared to order another bottle simply to watch him describe it. The grand finale was a strawberry mousse accompanied by lemon vanilla ice cream, which tasted suspiciously like happiness wearing a beret. Now here's the shocking part. Normally, after one of these fancy-schmancy tasting menus featuring portions carefully measured with what I assume is laboratory equipment, an old cowpoke like me would be halfway to In-N-Out or hunting down a large meat-lover's pizza before the valet had even brought the car around. Not this time. Somehow these delightful culinary magicians had pulled off the impossible. I drove home... completely satisfied. No cheeseburger. No pizza. No emergency beef intervention. I fear the diagnosis is clear. Against all odds, I am slowly turning into one of those suspiciously happy French food lovers. Mon Dieu. Merci beaucoup, ya little rascals.

Les Petites Canailles is one of those restaurants that reminds you French cooking is perfectly…read morecapable of having a little fun. Somewhere along the way, Chef Julien figured out that Paso Robles doesn't need another restaurant pretending it's in Paris. It already has Paris. What it needed was French technique with a California passport, and that's exactly what you get. The dining room sets the mood before the first plate ever lands. Contemporary without feeling cold, polished without feeling precious, warm wood, soft lighting, and just enough conversation floating around the room to remind you that people are genuinely enjoying themselves. Nobody looked like they were trying to impress Instagram. That's becoming surprisingly refreshing. We decided on the tasting menu because, honestly, that's the closest thing you can do to saying, "Chef, you've got the keys. Don't hit anything expensive." The summer gazpacho immediately announced that this wasn't going to be a lesson in classical French cuisine. Bright heirloom tomatoes, cucumber, fresh vegetables, and what felt like a ricotta ice cream somehow found themselves sharing the same bowl without anyone arguing about it. It was cool, refreshing, and just strange enough to make you smile. Every spoonful seemed to wander off in a slightly different direction before somehow finding its way back home. The diver scallop disappeared embarrassingly fast. There are certain bites where conversation simply stops because everyone's brain quietly says, "Hang on... let's deal with this first." This was one of those moments. Then came the raviolo, one oversized pillow sitting in a parsley sauce so fragrant I briefly wondered if someone had hidden a garden underneath the table. Rich cheese filled the center while the sauce kept everything bright and fresh. It managed to feel elegant without becoming the sort of food that makes you afraid to use your fork. The biggest surprise of the night was probably the pork. If someone had secretly switched my plate and told me it was beef, I probably would've believed them. It carried itself like steak, wore a beautiful crust, stayed wonderfully juicy inside, and completely ignored every expectation I brought with me. Pork having an identity crisis has never tasted so good. The lamb neck carried exactly the rich flavor you'd expect from the cut, balanced by a sauce that knew its job was to help instead of interrupt. That's something this kitchen seems to understand remarkably well. Nothing on the plate ever felt like it was competing for attention. Everyone simply got along. Dessert may have been my favorite course of the evening. Imagine someone took a custard, turned it inside out, gave it a silkier personality, then introduced pineapple and fresh fruit to keep everything lively. It wasn't trying to knock you unconscious with sugar. It simply ended the evening with a quiet little reminder that subtlety can still steal the show. The wine list deserves some attention, too. Local Paso Robles bottles sit comfortably beside classic French selections, and somehow neither feels out of place. It's less of a competition and more like two old friends agreeing that life's too short to argue over accents. Then there's Allie. Every good restaurant has someone who quietly keeps the whole evening moving without making it look like work. She has that gift. Friendly, relaxed, genuinely personable, and somehow always arriving about ten seconds before you realize you needed something. I never once felt interrupted, and I never once felt forgotten. That's a harder trick than most people realize. What I appreciated most about Les Petites Canailles is that it never takes itself too seriously, even though it easily could. The technique is there. The talent is obvious. But instead of asking you to admire how clever everything is, the restaurant simply invites you to enjoy yourself. That's a surprisingly rare quality these days. We walked out talking less about individual dishes and more about how much fun we'd had. Looking back, that may be the highest compliment I can give. Great food fills your stomach. Great restaurants somehow manage to fill the whole evening.
