There were a number of 'lunchtime' patrons coming and going as I was waiting for my order. All of them seemed to be 'regulars' that the owner called by name and knew what they were going to order. I spoke with three of the patrons. They were seated eating their 'usual' lunch. They had been coming to the Pizza Express for a while. And sometimes visit the other Paso Robles location on Creston Road with their families for dinner. One even went as far as to say he preferred the Creston location because the pizza ovens were different and seemed to bake a little different. Regardless he is a fan of the new location as well. I ordered the Antonia's pizza. It was SUPERB! As a matter of fact, it is the best pizza I have had in a very long time. The crust was not prefab. It was soft and crunchy at the same time. Held the ingredients well without getting a soggy bottom. The quality of the ingredients was good. Mostly this pizza reminded me of the kind of pizza one used to get at pizza parlors that did fresh, hand-tossed, dough. Even though I had to transport my pizza home it was still warm and very tasty. Usually when I get a to-go pizza, in town, it is cold and the crust is hard by the time I get home. I will give this place another try to see if there is any change in quality or service at a later date. For now, Pizza Express will be my to-go-to pizza parlor.

I went to the restroom, washed up and my salad was being delivered. My pizza showed up as I was nearly done with the salad oh yea. The Pie was cut in fourths, so it was a folded slice to eat, that works. The Pizza was cooked in a "impinger" oven, I prefer good ole' fashion brick oven cooking for the more genuine crust. The prices were surprisingly high for this area--honestly more in line with what you'd expect in a bigger city like LA. It immediately set a higher expectation for the food. I ordered the tri-tip sandwich with garlic fries. The fries were crispy, but there was barely any actual garlic--just a faint hint of garlic oil. When I think of garlic fries, I expect to see and taste real garlic, not just a suggestion of it. The tri-tip sandwich was the biggest disappointment. It came with only two very thin slices of meat--more like deli cuts than a hearty tri-tip portion--along with arugula and a spread that didn't really complement the sandwich. The flavors just didn't come together. To make matters worse, the root beer was flat, and while the waitress was kind, drink refills were minimal--basically once when we sat down and once when we were finished. For $22 per sandwich, the value just isn't there. For what we spent as a group, we could have had a much better meal elsewhere--honestly even in places like Pebble Beach. I understand businesses have overhead, but pricing needs to match both the quality and the local customer base. The people who live and work here year-round are the ones who will sustain the business, especially during slower seasons. Unfortunately, based on this experience, it'll be a while before I return.
