I was in the area for a job interview and had to try out the pho scene in Bakersfield. As soon as I came in, the female owner? sat me down and gave me 15 seconds to decide what I wanted (lol very typical of Vietnamese restaurants). Good thing I was hungry, Vietnamese, and knew what I wanted because this may seem too impatient for other customers, especially when they are newcomers. Though I give her the benefit of doubt because she likely assumed I knew what I wanted given my Asian appearance and that I had been there before. The pho tasted good: broth was aromatic and not too salty, beef was plenty and soft, and the overall proportion was just right. The daughter of the owner was very kind to accommodate my request of additional side of veggies. If I had lived in the area, I could see myself eating here once a week. read more

I've been coming here since i was a kid and now that i'm older i've since moved out of Bako, but i still find myself making the 40 minute drive every week just to come eat here. Definitely a guilty pleasure of mine. I've taken all my friends and family here over the years to share the greatness. We were driving through town and stopped by for a quick early dinner. Unfortunately my experience was not as positive as most of these reviews. The lemon grass fried chicken wings was overly salty, over-cooked and I wasn't able to make out the lemongrass taste. Their fresh spring rolls was OK, but was on the smaller side of what we're use to (probably because it had very minimal vermicelli). The Bo Luc Lac (steak cubes) wasn't what we're use to; this meat was flat (should be tender steak cubes) salty and tough. The Clay Pot Rice is just a name and it felt more like they put cooked rice and the ingredients in a clay pot and re-heat it for five minutes (if it was truly cooked in a Clay Pot, it should've taken at least 15 minutes and you should have some burnt rice on all sides of the Clay Pot). The Pork Chop Rice plate was not memorable. The pork chop had a cardboard texture, very dry and full of coloring instead of the charred color. read more

One of the best Vietnamese cuisine we tried. Egg rolls tastes so good with little bit of sweetness. We ordered Number 1 size Large and serving is big and can be shared by two person. Ambiance is ok, little but outdated. Location is not the best in town, it is sketchy and make sure you dont leave anything in your car. We sat on our chair and the lady came who happen to be the server and cashier and i told her i only want water and she's like "u already have water right?" while pointing to my tumbler, im like okaaaaay... not a big deal though but when I asked for a napkin she literally gave me 2 pieces since me and just my husband. After I paid for our food I asked for a box for our leftover then she asked me how many leftover do we have and I'm like just a little bit and she asked me again how many then im like confused since i am only asking for a one box then she said "ok i will check" she literally checked how much leftover we have then she gave me a small box where our egg rolls can fit in. lol. My absolute favorite spot for pho in Bakersfield! This restaurant is located in a huge plaza with a few stores surrounding it. There's actually another pho restaurant beside it, but Pho Vy takes #1 in my opinion. When you enter inside, you're greeted by the owner which is an elder woman and she's super cute! You can choose where to sit. I always get the #11 beef noodle with well done brisket and flank. I've been to many pho spots and I can distinguish real vs fake broth. This restaurant definitely makes REAL broth to the point where it doesn't need any sauces (hoisin, Sriracha, fish sauce, etc.) The service is great and you get your food quick! I haven't been to this establishment in over a year, mainly due to the COVID pandemic. This is my all time favorite spot in Bakersfield to get pho. My favorites are the plain beef pho, plain chicken pho, or the special beef pho that comes with beef and tripe. The broth is so flavorful on its own. There's the perfect amount of spice all throughout the dish and I love adding lime and all the veggies. I have never been disappointed with the food here. I've been coming to this restaurant since I was a little kid and the same two women are always there. One thing that I do miss from my childhood that they no longer have on their menu is their clay pot. The clay pot had crispy rice and Chinese sausage. I've never had anything like it before and was so sad to hear I will need to look for a new spot for this dish. Says it is open and the sign on the door said it was open but they were closed. Thanks to Yelp, we found Pho-Vy. Let me say this, this place came through. The nice Lady greeted us and quickly sat us down. We cruised the menu which was nice. I ended up ordering Pho with the sliced beef along with the spring rolls. The food came out lightning fast. We started eating and man was the food good. I can see why this place has such high marks. The Pho was delicious and filling. Like I said, the staff was awesome. This turned out to be a hidden gem. The place is small but big enough to be comfortable. I liked that they had both square and round tables to sit at. The menu isn't overly complicated, the only thing missing for me was oh the Pho bowls the didn't have a combo one that included beef, chic ken, and shrimp. I ordered the large dark meat pho bowl since there was only $1.00 in price difference. I was delighted with what came to our table. Big beautiful bowls filled with noodles, meat, and hot broth. I also liked that the side toppings that consist of bean sprouts, lime, jalapenos, and I believe Queen Basil, which was a two thumbs up. Most places give you celantro but this basil made a big difference and boosted up the flavors. Next time around I'm going to have to order the spring rolls. The people at the next table got an order and they looked delicious. The ladies who were working were very pleasant and attentive and took a brief moment to talk chit chat. I started going to Pho Vy in 2015 for pho. Over the years, the portions decrease, the types of meat/non-meat toppings decreased or was removed completely while the amount of noodles increased, and during Covid, the prices nearly doubled. Then I stopped going because there's similar pho around town. A lot of places are worse but there's new places with better service and food and located in a better part of town. Although, I have to say, I do miss the lady who waits on the table. She's always so welcoming. And the dining area is quiet. Unless there's a family. Usually get the Chicken Pho which out of the other 3 places in town that I have tried this is the best. My buds and I usually get the small chicken and split a Chicken Pad Thai. I don't mean to be a snob but this wasn't pho. I ordered two different soups, one was just the regular pho dac biet which is the combination soup with different meats of beef and a seafood soup with imitation crab, fishcake and shrimp. First the soup base didn't taste proper, as if it wasn't seasoned correctly. It was overly salty too. Second the seafood soup should be chicken broth based not beef broth. It just made it seem like i ordered beef soup and noodle. There was three pieces of overcooked and shrunken shrimp, 5 thin slices of fishcake and one stick of imitation crab stick cut in half. Also both soups i felt they had way too much MSG. Only thing i enjoyed was the vietnamese coffee that has chicory in it and was delicious and soymilk. read more
