It's somehow every time I come to Bakersfield that I start craving Asian food. Thankfully, there are some decent options and new ones that continue to pop up throughout the city. I was craving pho and decided to give Saigon Bento a try. It's a little confusing because there's a Saigon restaurant and then there's this place, Saigon Bento. There's also a Saigon Bento #2. Apparently Saigon restaurant has been around for forever and is highly recommended, but was much farther, so I decided to come here instead. I honestly just like the meatballs in my pho and they were able to accommodate just this instead of their other preset dishes. It was good and packaged well for takeout! This adorable little place is a must-visit! There's ample parking, which was a huge plus. When we arrived, the place was surprisingly empty, but it was immaculately clean and smelled amazing. We walked in with a party of eight, and our food arrived promptly. As more people arrived, I decided to order extra items to take home, but the wait time was still minimal. I also appreciated the convenience of ordering on a tablet, which allowed us to minimize our interactions with the staff. However, when we did speak with them, they were incredibly helpful. Solid pho place I thoroughly enjoy. Peak order for me is the Jurassic Pho as well as the charbroiled pork bento. The pho will give you life especially during cold weather. The beef rib was expertly done and you'll regret not having it with your bowl of rich broth. They also have boba with interesting flavors, all worth trying. I walked in and paid for some pho and it was quite pricey but hey I thought what if the food is good. Got my food and it was decent but one thing I didn't like was that the worker was picking up the chairs onto the table as if I finished my meal already! I don't know I just wasn't impressed by this place the meat and noodles just tasted old in general Like it had been refrigerated for a while. And it was very expensive for the quantity of food. Smh I paid 19$ for some noodles and a piece of meat that was just fat and bone smh. The quality and quantity is not good at all. The place is usually empty so that should speak volumes. Food was great. The Pho and Bun Bo Hue were very tasty. Their Pho was on the "sweeter" side and the bun Bo hue is on the "saltier" side of the spectrum if you've had them before. My overall pick would be their Pho. The beef rib was delicious and was seasoned very well. I'm glad Bakersfield now has a nice Pho spot! Service was also very efficient which I personally like. Hm, I really wanted to like this place. Friends and I went out to have pho and then they decided on this place. I think the place is clean and well-kept. They have some cool drink options. The guy at the counter was nice. It's like definitely a casual restaurant which is totally great. Downsides though... 1) Not very many vegetarian or vegan options. So if you or your friends happen to be vegan/vegetarian...options are limited. My vegan friend got the veggie spring rolls, which mind you, are the same price as the shrimp spring rolls. Which brings me to point 2. 2) Value for money. We got 4 veggie spring rolls that were pretty large but uhhhh they were literally filled with lettuce, a cucumber, and some vermicelli. It needs more veggie in there. Like where is the carrot? Some better greens? There is not anything spring about this roll. 3) Taste. I got the garlic noodle and I was so disappointed. Taste-wise, it just falls short of every garlic noodle I have ever tried. 4) The kitty robot serves you. I don't have a problem with the cat robot but I personally think it affects how much I want to tip at the register so FYI. 5) The actual pho itself looks probably the best of all the menu items but it's nothing to write home about. PHO : Pho was good. It's flavorful and aromatic. But a bit salty due to boiling/sitting too long. The broth was a little bit thicker, which it doesn't taste rich/clean/smooth. The regular noodle was mushy and choppy. The portion for the price is very pricy for this bowl. RATE : 3/5 PORK FRIED RICE : taste pretty good with the pork. All the flavor is there. It's lightly seasoned to where you can taste the seasoning. The pork is sweet. It reminds me of sweet chinese sausage. The rice was plump, moist, and firm. But the portion for this price is pretty pricy. RATE : 4/5 AMBIANCE : The shop is really spacious once you walk in. There's a little hangout area/photo booth by the door. They did great on interrior and exterior design. But why is it so hot, humid and stuffy inside? The tables are sticky. The bathroom floor are sticky. There's not much customers, no music, and it's quiet in there. The only music is from the robo cat. SERVICE : Their customer service were horrible. The older gentle men was really ignorant and gives attitude. He doesn't seem to be happy or in a great mood. Besides him, with the heat and self serve water/robo cat is poor too. The water cup was really small so I have to get up a couple time to grab water. OVERALL : Their food is ok/good. With this price, I'm expecting a high class 4 star shop! The ambience is really nice and the pictures on the walls are amazing. If you're into art, this is really really nice. They have a lot of photo op backdrops as well. I gave them a four because I came at 5:17 PM and they had fans running instead of having the air-conditioning on. It was warm already. It wasn't too hot, but it was a little bit warm. My Thai tea tasted just right and the beef short ribs were not too chewy kind of the way I like them so it was nice. MOST IMPORTANTLY, an Adorable cat robot delivers your food and drinks to your table. It made me smile so much. I'm still on the fence about this place. The food we ordered was pretty basic. The menu is super limited. Ordering is done on the kiosks and a robot brings it out to your table. I think that's probably what I didn't like about this place, was the very limited interaction we had with staff. We weren't greeted, nor asked if we needed any help or checked on after receiving our food. I could see how this would be appealing to some, but I enjoy interacting and getting to know my servers. 1st time here for a late lunch/ early dinner with the wifey and kids. Me and my girls all love pho, the wifey not so much so luckily they have other options as well. I opted for the chicken pho, a garlic noodle bowl with grilled chicken for the wife, and a side of pork potstickers and chicken fried rice to share. I also had to get a Thai tea, while my wife went with a soda (by the can) I really enjoyed the pho. Very good flavor with nice and lean chicken meat throughout, perfect comfort food for the rainy day. The chicken fried rice was just okay for me. Not the best I've had, but still good. We all enjoyed the pork potstickers. They tasted the same as you'd find anywhere else, and equally as good. My wife and I both agreed that, while the garlic noodle bowl was good, it was a bit too garlicky for our liking. A must-try if you're a garlic lover. I also tried my daughter's order of torpedo shrimp. Nice crunch but lacking the shrimp meat and flavor I had hoped for. The Thai tea was a perfect blend, loved it. I know it's not a big deal, but I thought it was so neat that Saigon Bento uses a robot waiter cart to bring your food to your table. Pretty spacious and surprisingly modern for Bakersfield. The store has modern Vietnamese art hung up inside and it even has a robot that serves the milk tea drinks to the patrons. Got home the beef rib was super light than other times as far as meat and the meat wasn't edible like chewing gum as well as the rest of the rare steak,plus the meatballs was cold and and raw and the noodles were super hard to break thinking they had heated the meal enough to eat but was very dissatisfied,So i went back for a refund the the female employee Wynn looked at my bowl dismissed me said i have eaten most of the food and then the hispanic man who only speaks spanish told me i was right when he looked at my bowl and that i have not eaten not even half way but a less than a quarter of the expensive $21.60 bowl,well I proceeded to ask for my refund she said it will arrive in 3-4 business days i asked for proof that i was getting a refund with a receipt .Wynn was getting my refund without a receipt,she told me she cant but if i didn't receive it to come back,i said as a matter of fact let me get my refund back in cash like other food restaurants do,but no she said i got too aggressive for asking it that way..i spoke to her with a firm tone and then i couldn't believe my ears she said she was calling the cops on me???! For what?! For a refund? Stepped into restaurant the first thing I see is a screen that says order when ready. immediate turn off. Hate automation because it's tacky and takes away from real people doing real work. Ordered spicy beef pho, the beef seemed cheap as in slightly more cheey don't know if it was the quality of beef or they didn't cook it long enough. and had a funny taste to it. and there was a layer of orange red fat floating at the top which after trying gave me acid reflux. the broth was acceptable tasty and savory not the best I've had rhough. The chicken wings seems good at first but after biting into one you could tell the chicken was of low quality plus the wings weren't savory they're crispy with a sweet taste I had to add hoisin sauce to finish them. The shrimp fried rice was ok but the taste could definitely improve. The rice was just plain bad slightly chewy instead of soft. The restaurant aesthetic is ok open layout and there seems to be air conditioning. This restaurant has the little automated robot that brings your food out to you once again I find this really tacky and it's loud and annoying. You have to take your food off the machine and press finish so it can go away so freaking annoying. If you are in Bakersfield I highly recommend maui pho, pho vy, saigon bento is a half baked restaurant no disrespect but a little more passion and love Into the food can help improve it. Wouldn't really go back maui pho has perfect Vietnamese food they unfortunately also use little robot but they'refood is made with a lot of love. I found this place online and stopped by for the first time while traveling. Overall, the food was decent, but the experience was a bit mixed. Ordering is done through a self-order system, but honestly, it wasn't as convenient as I expected. Toward the end of the order, it asks for your phone number and membership sign-up, and it wasn't very clear whether those steps were required or could be skipped. I was also not a fan of being asked to tip before receiving any service. Personally, I believe tipping should be done after the meal -- that way you can choose to tip more or less based on the service you actually receive. That said, the server was friendly and attentive, and brought us everything we needed. Luckily, we had already tipped 20% upfront, but it did make me wonder: if we hadn't tipped at the beginning, how would we add more later if we didn't have cash? As for the food, we were satisfied. I ordered the chicken noodle and added shrimp. The broth option labeled "#1" was much better in flavor, and the noodles were better as well. I do think the chicken noodle dish would have been even better if it came with regular pho rice noodles by default. The picture is EXACTLY how it came out. I took half of a bit of the cold noodles & a small piece of the very charred chicken. Now looking at the other reviews I have noticed; one, my noodles weren't even filled all the way. I got half a portion. My chicken was severely over cooked. Sadly, would not recommend to any family or friends. Food: For $22 I was expecting better. Everything (not exaggeration) was cold. The entire bento was cold; as if it was sitting out for the entire thirty minutes that I waited for my food to come out. Garlic noodles were stuck together, bland & flavorless. Not to mention, cold. The chicken was cold but had good flavor. Didn't even risk trying the shrimp or wontons since both were cold as ice. Ambiance: Stuffy. No central AC. Just large fans blowing hot air around. As most of my pho excursions are based on, this visit was nothing different than an urge to satisfy a deep craving for something hot and soupy after a night of taking one too many shots. Saigon Bento is the closest to my house so away we go. This spot occupies the old Pho-Vy 2 restaurant. I never got the chance to try Saigon Bento when it first opened at their old location. The restaurant is spacious and immediately you're eyes are drawn to the left where they have a groovy couch for when waiting for your boba or take out orders. We sat where we liked and immediately, the owner came to greet us with the menus. We opted for the grilled beef and shrimp vermicelli bowl and the pho with the inconspicuous beef bone. The broth was good and aromatic but my only gripe was the broth was not hot enough. It was lukewarm before it got to our table and possible because it was delivered to us by the robot. Tried Saigon Bento for the first time today. I can't say much about service since we placed our own order on a kiosk and a robot brought us our food (except for the phõ). I ordered chicken pho, and it was a little spicy, which I was not expecting. But still was very good phõ. My husband got their only bento option, which was like $18. I was a little hesitant but had high hopes. In the end it was 4 small ribs (see pic), although my husband said they were really good. Overall, food was good, but $37 for a bowl of pho and bento box only seemed a little pricey IMO. Honestly I think I'd rather have Soy and Spice down the street. read more
