As we entered the restaurant our server seated us immediately and was friendly & attentive. My companion and I were out to have Pho and New Saigon didn't disappoint. I had the seafood Pho and my companion had the plain Pho. The broth was rich and flavorful with a combination of tender, delicious seafood. We ordered the pho with all the meats: rare beef, brisket, meatballs, tripe, and tendon. We also ordered the pork and shrimp spring rolls and crispy egg rolls. They were just okay. The spring rolls did not have any flavor whatsoever. The pork and shrimp were bland. The shrimp also had fu it jink on it so I took out the rest of it and don't eat it. The crispy rolls were a tad mushy on the inside and did not have any pizazz! The restaurant is a bit musty, outdated but functional. The bathrooms needed cleaning. It seems like they don't check them often because someone had a blowout and it was messy! If you have to go... hold it. I wouldn't say the bathrooms are clean and inviting. I've cleaner bathrooms at Arco. After all this, the owner offered a tapioca and coconut milk dessert in the house. The dessert was made with mung beans and unfortunately, it tasted as such. Came on a chilly Sunday around 6 pm after spending some time in Sequoia National Forest. We were in between Pho-Vy and this place (they're literally right next to each other) and decided to try New Saigon due to some of the reviews and the pictures. Im sure Pho-Vy would have been excellent also but we were extremely happy with our choice. We were promptly greeted and sat, there was no wait and only one booth was taken. Later on a family sat in another booth but the restaurant was virtually empty. The inside is pretty nice with cool wooden furniture and a bar and an aquarium. The booths are large and comfy. The service was friendly and fast by the 2 employees working in the front room. We ordered the crispy egg rolls, the charbroiled beef rice vermicelli, and the large house special noodle soup pho. We also decided to get 2 Thai teas, one with boba and whipped cream and the other with whipped cream. We completely demolished the food even though there was so much and completely stuffed ourselves. The egg rolls came out first and were crispy and meaty and larger than I expected. They didn't have a fishy taste like I do taste at some other restaurants. It came with your typical pickled carrot and radish, lettuce, and cucumbers. The pho broth was sooooo flavorful and rich. There was plenty of meat inside since the house special comes with all the beef types. It came with your traditional bean sprouts, basil, and jalapeños. We also added the hoisin, sriracha, chili sauce, and chili oil. The charbroiled beef was excellent. It was sooo savory and sweet, thinly sliced, and tender. It went perfectly with the green onions, peanuts, lettuce and noodles, you want to get all the flavors in one bite! The Thai teas were decent size and tasted delicious, can't go wrong. Food is decent and the special price deal is great. However, there's a chubby upper age man who could be the manager or owner has shitty tone and attitude, which is a deal breaker. There were 15 of us that day, but we wanted to split into 3 tables to get 3 separate bills to avoid the automatic gratuity charge. That chubby man was giving us an attitude for us to sit together so that it would be easier for him to process our orders for us, otherwise it may take about 30 mins for our food to be ready. One of my sisters in law was upset by this and got up and leave while the rest of us moved together to the bigger table. Then one of us went after her and told her that it's getting late and just eat here since we still have 3+ hours to drive back home. Did some volunteer work at CAPK this morning sorting canned food in time for the holidays. After finishing earlier than expected, I really worked up an appetite. Since I'm on the east side of town already, it was perfect timing for some brunch. And for me, nothing sounded more comforting than a hot bowl of pho this morning. Pho Vy was still closed so I tried New Saigon (or as the menu stated Tan Saigon) which was conveniently right next door. Happy to report, this was a good rebound. As my other review stated, I always preferred Pho Vy among all other pho shops in town. But little did I know that New Saigon's pho is, dare I say it...better than the competition next door. There are a few things I am very particular about when eating a bowl and this small bowl of house special pho, item #32 seems to check most of my requirements. First, the broth must be piping hot and clear. Before adding any condiments in, I get in there with a spoon and just enjoy a few sips of the broth that should have the right balance of traditional spices and flavor from the simmered beef bones, oxtails and flank steak. Secondly, there should also be a nice noodle-to-meat ratio. The rice noodles in this bowl were perfectly done and not mushy. The thin slices of beef were still somewhat rare which were perfect because the piping hot broth cooked them nicely. There was a nice balance of brisket slices, tender tendon, lean flank, tripe and beef meatballs included. Lastly, a nice full plate of fresh garnishes should accompany the pho. Nothing worse than a restaurant serving a twig of basil and some dull sprouts. Fortunately here, they don't skimp on the fresh basil, jalapeños, bean sprouts and limes. Total price of the meal including my iced coffee was a dub. Which is a great price for a meal considering that's gonna sustain you for much of the day until you have dinner. It's a pho-nomenal deal! Update: Went back on a different day to see if the flavor of the pho is different. Have to report that the flavor, presentation and portions of the pho were consistent both times I went. The flavors were still the same so they've gained a repeat customer for sure. Also tried the beef chow fun and steamed dumplings this time around and both dishes were delicious also. read more
