    Kuma's Special Roll
    Lydia V.

Had ordered from the restaurant before on DoorDash and this time I decided to pop in. I was pleasantly surprised at how cute the space is. The parking is a bit of a challenge right now due to the construction in downtown. However, there is a lot right next to them that you can park in and there is also parking on the street directly in front of their door. The restaurant is modern and decorated in Asian theme. The bathroom and the restaurant is very clean. And the staff was very attentive, professional, and very pleasant. I enjoyed the food I ordered via DoorDash, but this time I got it fresh right out of the kitchen and the counter, and it was amazing. We started with the jalapeño bomb, and mixed tempura in a size small. Both those appetizers were delicious and perfect for sharing. Then we ordered a California roll on soy paper, the Kuma special sushi roll, and the creamy salmon roll. Everything was fresh and very shareable. We could've easily shared our meal with two other people needless to say we had leftovers to take home. I definitely recommend this place and I look forward to going back. There are other things on the menu such as fried rice, udon, and teriyaki plates. They also had a couple of desserts, so I am definitely planning on trying one of those. Enjoy!

Madre mia! Or should I say, " うわ! (Uwa!)." Loved it. So far, the best sushi place in Bakersfield. Starting to get really close to our favorite place in Sherman Oaks. Loving it. Ex-girlfriend, Best friends and Calamari tempura roll were all very good (in that order, best to good.). And don't forget a nice, cold bottle of Nigori . Kanpai!!

The restaurant is adorable. The staff is extremely friendly and I genuinely wanted to love this place. I got bulgogi bowl and it was terrible. Lacked flavor entirely and had so much cabbage underneath it was wild. The edamame was AMAZING and the sauce it was in was so good and salvaged my dish a bit. My guy and daughter got sushi. 4/5. Overall, wish my dish was as good as the sushi.

This us a great location if you're looking for something fast and filling at a great price . Service is excellent, as soon as you walk in there's some to greet and seat you . The decor is modern and chic . The bentos are a great option to try several things in the menu at an affordable price .I highly recommend trying a few of the sushi rolls .

Wow! The sushi here was so fresh and well priced. I just ordered takeout but was really pleased with my choices. A few areas for improvement was the sushi could have been rolled tighter and better packaging for the edamame - I opened up the package and the garlic sauce spilled everywhere

The lunch deal is an amazing value, and the quality of the food is excellent. The restaurant itself is beautiful inside with a modern design and a relaxed, lo-fi vibe that makes it a great place to unwind. The service was mid, took a minute to get greeted, our food came out quickly, and the staff interaction was professional however, not very attentive, we didn't get checked on while we ate. They kind of just huddle together in the back. But between the delicious lunch specials, stylish atmosphere, and fast food turn around, Kuma Sushi is an easy spot to recommend. We'll definitely be back!

Pickled Radish Roll and chow mein

Best Chow mein ever! I stopped by for a quick lunch while waiting for an appointment downtown. I don't usually go for sushi places since I don't eat seafood, but they had lots of veggie rolls available. I got the pickled horseradish roll; it was good! Simple, light, with a little tang. Now, the chow mein is what will get me back here. It was loaded with veggies, not greasy at all, and just overall awesome flavors. Wish I would've tried more, but I will definitely be back.

Tried Kuma Sushi- what a nice surprise. The inside is modern with nice lighting. Large sushi counter. Nice decor throughout with a decent waiting area with couches and tables. Service was good, staff were attentive and got the orders right. California roll was okay. The OMG Roll was really nice and plus- they set it on fire- who doesn't like fire? Tried the Pineapple Soju, that was okay- I'll try other flavors another time. Pineapple was subtle.

Had a great first experience here! The staff was kind and attentive, and the rolls were soo good. You need to try the Kuma Special roll! :)

    Alaskan Roll
    Ashley R.

Came to Kuma Sushi in Bakersfield around noon for lunch and had such a great experience! I ordered the salmon teriyaki bento box, it came with a spicy tuna roll, gyoza, and salad & everything was absolutely delicious. The salmon was flavorful and perfectly cooked, and the gyoza were a great addition. My friend had the chicken teriyaki bento box, which was also really good. We shared an Alaskan roll, and it was fresh, flavorful, and I would definitely recommend. The service was excellent our waitress was super friendly, and all the staff were attentive without being overbearing. The inside decor is cute with nice lighting, wooden tables, and comfy chairs that make it a relaxing spot to enjoy a meal. Overall: great food, great ambiance, and friendly staff. Definitely a spot I'd come back to again!

Good sushi place downtown. Nice looking decor, I enjoy the light colored environment. Service was fairly quick. Americanized sushi is very hard to judge as I generally think that it's hard to stand out. Rice is sticky and doesn't fall apart, sauces are solid and reliable. The very interesting and unique thing I had was the seaweed salad that came in a glass! Very interesting presentation and a good way to add some creativity. This is a good default and I have no complaints! At the same time it's not crazy spectacular.

We were traveling between NorCal & SoCal and decided to make a stop in Bakersfield for dinner. Honestly, we did not have high expectations for sushi in Bakersfield (no offense), but Kuma Sushi proved us wrong and rightly so. This mom & pop owned Sushi restaurant is a real gem and in our opinion, beats all the other sushi places we've had in L.A. or the Bay Area. Not to mention, the price is extremely worth it; real bang for your buck. 1. Jalapeno Bomb (5/5) A real jalapeno split in half, deep fried, then filled with 1/2 spicy tuna and 1/2 cream cheese and finally, topped off with eel sauce and spicy mayo. Not only is it packed with flavor, but everything just comes together so well. It literally is a flavor "bomb" in your mouth. Super addictive appetizer. 2. Salmon Skin Roll (5/5) The salmon skin was fried to perfect crisp, yet maintained the natural fatty oils of the fish. It's lightly drizzled with eel sauce to give it an extra umami kick. 3. Spicy Poki Roll (5/5): The roll itself is filled with spicy tuna and cucumber, but the rolls are then topped with fresh, diced spicy sashimi with masago and scallions. You taste a hint of sesame oil that compliments the fresh sashimi very well. 4. Red Bull Roll (5/5) The sushi roll is filled with shrimp tempura, spicy crabmeat and avocado. Then the roll is wrapped with a thin layer of torched filet mignon. Finally, it is topped with jalapeño slices, which gives it a very fiery heat + spicy mayo & eel sauce. Your mouth will be left feeling like it's on fire (in a good way of course). It's substantial, yet it did not leave us feeling sick or overly bloated after eating this. I just love the extra meaty taste from the mignon. Protein plus all the way!!! 5. Rattlesnake Roll (5/5) A unique sushi roll that contains NO RICE. Instead, the base is a fried tortilla wrap that is then stuffed with spicy tuna, crabmeat, cream cheese, and avocado. Topped with jalapeno, spicy mayo, mango sauce chili oil and eel sauce. Another substantial roll, but it also did not make us feel overly bloated or "heavy" after eating it. The cream cheese and avocado really gives it an extra creamy texture. Yet, the spicy mayo, mango sauce and chili oil brings out the citrusy heat and gives this roll a true character of its own. The presentation of their dishes are just A++ Service was friendly and attentive! We have found ourselves a treasured Sushi house to stop at whenever we have to make a travel between NorCal-SoCal. Keep up the GREAT work Kuma!!!

Kuma Sushi is the only sushi place I go to for sushi when I'm in Bakersfield! The staff are so friendly here! They seat you promptly and the food also comes out very quickly. The sushi chefs ensure your fish is presented nicely and always tastes fresh. Their 3PM - 5PM HAPPY HOUR offers the best deals on sushi, honestly nowhere else in town compares. You're literally paying less than you would at a fast food chain for a full meal here during happy hour! Don't sleep on their deals y'all ~ The restaurant is well-kept with very high ceilings and a good amount of spacing between tables. The music is always upbeat and the environment has always felt welcoming. They even give you a complimentary watermelon slice at the end of your meal. I can't recommend Kuma Sushi enough. They're the best sushi spot in Bakersfield, hands down!

We had dinner here and it was both of our first-time. I really hate that I have to give this place a 4 but it's because the spicy edamame was not to my liking and they do not carry pineapple soju. The food is definitely a must try, especially the beautiful yellowtail sashimi. The seafood yakisoba was so delicious. I did not care much for the baked salmon roll, Love Sushi takes first place for that roll and Prime Sushi take first place for spicy edamame. The crazy tuna roll I ordered was so big! The crunchy pieces on top can stand to sit in some absorbing paper towels because they were a bit oily but went well with the Tuna dance. I personally did not care for the bluefin tuna. Overall my babe and I enjoyed our dinner and will most definitely return for more.

Instead, I'm paying premium prices to sit under fluorescent lights and question my life choices. The "Combo" Math that Isn't Mathing Then there's the pricing logic--or lack thereof. Why does a chicken and steak combo cost 20% more than the steak plate alone? * Standard Logic: A combo price should land somewhere between the cost of the chicken and the steak. * Kyoto Logic: "Since you want both, we're going to tax your indecisiveness." Either they have zero respect for their customers, or they're catastrophically bad at math. I'm betting on the latter. Honestly, I could buy a Blackstone grill for the cost of three or four visits to this place. The "Service" (If You Can Call It That) To top it off, the customer service is abysmal. The staff acts personally offended by your very existence. Even the older gentleman--who I assume is the owner--is the worst of the bunch. He radiates a vibe that says, "I hope you choke on that brown rice." Final Verdict: This is the last time they get a dime from me. I'm taking my business to my backyard.

I'm glad we did, because it gave us a whole new feel for the place. Inside isn't massive, but it's not cramped either. Think of it like the Goldilocks of restaurant spaces: just right. The vibe leans calm and cozy, dim lighting, black walls, and splashes of color here and there. It's got that "peaceful sushi zen" atmosphere without being boring. Our waitress deserves a medal (or at least an extra roll on the house). She was the only one working the floor, yet somehow managed to be friendly, attentive, and efficient all at once. Multitasking level: expert. Now onto the food, which is really why we came back. We ordered a spread: two teriyaki chicken plates, one chicken ramen bowl, an order of sushi crunch rolls, egg rolls, a large pineapple sake, a beer, and two iced teas. (Yes, we came hungry. Don't judge.) Everything came out quickly, hot, and fresh. The chicken was juicy, the rice perfectly cooked, and the little bed of veggies under the teriyaki chicken was tender-crispy and surprisingly addictive. Whoever thought of tucking those under there deserves a raise. The ramen had bold flavors that hit the spot, and the sushi rolls lived up to their name, they really were crunchy and delicious. Now, the egg rolls. Let me tell you, these might just be the best I've ever had. Perfectly crisp on the outside, soft and stuffed with flavor on the inside. The kind that makes you regret ordering only one plate. Drinks? The beer was cold (and surprisingly affordable), the iced teas were strong and refreshing, and the pineapple sake... well, it was different, let's just say it's not everyone's cup of tea. Personally, I'll stick to tequila, lol, but my husband happily claimed the sake as his new favorite. Win-win. Prices here are fair and budget-friendly, which is always nice to see at a sushi spot. The place was clean and well-kept, and I'm happy to say it still holds up just as well as when I ordered takeout years ago. Bottom line: Shoyu Sushi is still doing its thing, fresh food, good prices, relaxing vibe, and service that makes you feel taken care of. If you want sushi that crunches, teriyaki that comforts, and egg rolls that just might ruin all other egg rolls for you, this is the spot.
