We came to Seoul Shikdang to celebrate my friend's birthday, and the experience went way above and beyond anything we expected. First off, the staff was incredible. I brought a cake with us, and they were generous enough to store it in the back kitchen. When it was time to sing happy birthday, they surprised us by bringing the cake out with a candle, plates, forks, and even a knife to cut it. On top of that, they joined in singing happy birthday with us. It was such a thoughtful, kind gesture--something they absolutely didn't have to do, but chose to anyway. That alone made the night unforgettable. For my first review of 2026, I wanted to start on a positive note. My family finally brought me for dinner for my birthday and I was so happy we finally got to visit. We had originally planned to come for my oldest son's birthday in January last year, but there literally was no where to park, so we couldn't come til it slowed down a bit. Food was delicious and they don't have a huge variety of items, so it's not hard to decide what to order. The staff were super nice and on top of it. It seems like a family owned business. Restaurant was nice and clean. It's not a huge space, but they do take care of their guests quickly. Parking is probably the only issue if you're trying to come out on a Friday night for dinner or the weekend because there's not too much parking and there's several establishments nearby, but I highly recommend you try this place out! read more

I like spicy food, but can't handle too much and I thought the jalapeño cheese curry katsu had the perfect amount of spice. We came on a Friday night around 7:30pm and had to wait 10-15 min. They take your phone number and will call you when your table is ready. The decor is cool. The interior makes it look like you're dining next to traditional Korean houses. It did take a while for the food to come. It looked like we were part of their second round of dinner and they didn't seem to be able to handle all the tables that had ordered at once. We got the LA Galbi and Steamed Dumplings. The portion size of galbi was good for the price and the flavor was on the sweeter side, but tasty. The dumplings were a solid choice. read more

On a long road-trip from the east coast, wife who is Korean-American needed a Korean food fix so we gave this spot a shot. Plenty of parking in the area (located in a plaza), we loved the outside signage with cute characters and menu items. Friendly greeting by Hostess/Waitress and we were seated quickly in a comfortable booth. There are booths & long tables for bigger parties. Cozy with nice simple decor, which did remind us of the spots we dined in when we lived in Korea. We liked the framed posters with ingredients of favorite Korean dishes. My wife tried the tofu seafood stew, tofu is not her favorite, but she said this one was very good, and she liked to tofu. We shared a seafood Korean pancake, super thick with plenty of delicious seafood. Nicely done so not too crispy, but not under cooked. Best one that I have had outside my mother-in-law's, worth the price. Our hostess/waitress was amazing, despite wearing several hats (seemed to be on her own) for dealing with customers. Love eating here when it's just me and my husband but a bit more people turns into a disaster. Had a nice dinner last night but they forgot 1 plate and when we finished our dinner and saw it did not come out we asked to have it canceled and they said will do but plate still come out 15 min later. Had to tell them again that we requested for the cancellation and was still charged. Let them know we cancelled the plate and the waitress then took it off our bill. We had to ask more than once just to get our drinks, and even then, it took quite a while. When our food was finally brought out, no utensils were provided, which meant our food sat getting cold for about five minutes while we waited to flag someone down. Unfortunately, that wasn't the only issue. We needed water refills during the meal, but the wait staff never checked in on us or even made eye contact despite passing by our table several times. It really felt like we were being ignored. A little more attentiveness and basic customer service training would go a long way here. It's disappointing because the food has potential, but the experience overall just wasn't enjoyable. read more

Came here with my wife for an after work dinner. The place is super cute inside. It was designed to look like you're eating in a Korean courtyard. Seemed like it would be a nice casual date spot. The service was also amazing. The servers were super nice and accommodating. Orders: Garlic suyuk: this was a sizzling plate of pork that you ate with rice, garlic, a spicy sauce, and green onion (I think). Huge portion size and probably good for at least 3 people. We had quite a bit left over. It was super tasty. I'd come back just to order this again. Seafood pancake: the seafood pancake was deliciously crispy. Came with a nice dipping sauce. My wife loves this. Spicy tofu soup: a comforting soup filled with lots of soft tofu, some meat, and veggies. Overall, a solid spot for Korean food. Again, the garlic suyuk was SO good. The food was so good that on a return trip, we returned, and that time, I ordered a Kimchi Jiggae, somewhat similar to the first one but with kimchi instead of beef. When you go there (or if you want to look at other people's photos of the menu), check out the intriguing Military Soup, also listed as Army Soup on the menu. The spicy cold noodles (18.99) was less spicy then I expected (you can add more sauce) but got flavor. The Banchan (side dishes) were all spicy would have liked 1 that was sweet or no spice but that is a small thing. I love it here! This is my third time coming and every time i have had a great experience. The staff are quick and friendly, even when the shikdang is packed! Inside is quite cozy, and is decorated to look like you're in seoul- which is a much better place to be than Bakersfield in this summer heat! The portions are quite large/family style size, so bring your appetite or a friend. You will need leftover containers! I will say, if I had to pick one out of the four dishes we ordered, i'd pick the teobeokki. It is delicious!!! The cheese pull was ridiculous. But as the photos reflect, everything tasted amazing! The food here was amaaaazing!! Everything was prepared well, filling, and so so tasty. The banchan was the best I've had out of the Korean spots in town especially the oi muchim (cucumber salad). I got the Chogye-Tang Cold Noodles with broth and omg!! So refreshing for the summer. The service was quick and intentional - they noticed when we needed something and attended but didn't hover around. The owner (I presume) even cut my noodles for me. I was transported to a whole new place with the ambiance they have going on. Kpop plays in the background, there's a few light up displays, and the booths are set up like small food stalls/huts. Oh thank goodness an authentic Korean spot in Bakersfield for even more variety! Bakersfield doesn't offer any staple "tang" (Korean soup) so I'm excited to have this around. Although Japanese, I've also been hoping someone would start serving Japanese curry in town. Ordered the Garlic Suyuk and the Pork Katsu Curry. Garlic Suyuk - 10/10. The broth is heavenly. I spooned it out and put it all over my rice. Make sure you have some of the ssamjang with it. Looks spicy but it isn't. Tons of umami in this dish for seemingly unseasoned pork. Pork Katsu Curry - 9/10. Served piping hot! The pork was a slightly slightly slightly overdone, so a little firm. I would love if this dish had potatoes, onions, and carrots for the price of $23. Other than that very flavorful indeed. Nice touch having furikake on the rice. The ambiance was nice and I felt transported. Must have been a lot of work creating the decor! The service was also nice as they were fairly attentive but you might have to call their attention as it didn't feel like typical American where they need to check on you every 5 mins. We were greeted immediately once walking in. The inside looked so cool and was decorated as if you're out in the streets eating street food in Korea. We got the spicy braised beef short ribs with cheese, chicken gangjung and spicy tofu stew with beef. Didn't think it was going to be a lot of food but it really filled us up. The chicken was fried well and a great appetizer. The tofu soup was one of the best I've had. The braised beef dish was so flavorful and honestly the star of the show. Served sizzling in a shallow broth with two kinds of dipping sauce. Delicious! The thin slices of fatty pork was a sinfully satisfying indulgence over steamed rice. It was simple yet satisfying dish. The kimchi and pickled banchan complemented the rich fatty pork. We had the Hotteok for dessert. It was a small pastry with a sweet filling. The ambience was reminiscent of a Korean eatery. First thing, right off the bat, would be that I didn't take any photos. I would say the ambiance walking in is made to look and feel like a Korean street cafe. The service was on point, with the owner and his crew being very attentive. We started off with two types of dumplings, one fried and one steamed. Both were very tender and very flavorful. We then shared their pork belly platter, between the four of us, while enjoying I think every flavor of Soju they had available. We then moved on to a couple main entrees, which we shared, along with the accoutrements/banchans. Overall everything was outstanding.
