Good bun. The food here is even lighter than I like for vietnamese, but still very good. I always try the pork and eggroll bun when I go to a new vietnamese place. The pork here is more tender than I am used to, but it lacks the chargrilled flavor I like and the eggrolls are very delicate. If you think Vietnamese tends to be more crude, you may prefer Pho Van, but it wasn't for me. I am however, curious about that pork in a banh mi.... Also, the service is hit or miss. Most of the staff was very nice, but my waiter forgot my coffee and despite making eye contact and hand signals and waiting for about 15 minutes after I was done eating, I still had to go up to him to ask for it again. Just went to Pho Van for the first time for lunch today. I live in Round Rock, and despite there being many Vietnamese restaurants there, none offer Banh Mi for some reason. So, to north Austin I must drive. What everyone says about the friendly waitress is true - this was my first time and she hugged me! Pho Van's banh mi was wonderful - crusty bread (that I wish I knew where they found it - all the bread I find in Texas is uncrusty), savory/sweet charbroiled pork, crisp, fresh vegetables - delicious! My only complaint was I wish it had a little fish sauce or seasoned mayonaise on it like some banh mi have - it was a little dry. Also, the vegetables aren't pickled like some banh mi, although this didn't really bother me. I also had the avocado shake, and it was good - I'm not a huge sweets fan, so I'll probably skip that next time. I hope to go back and try some of the other things on their menu. Oh, and one reviewer said they don't take credit cards - this isn't true - I paid with my Visa card. read more

Anyway , I meant to have some Pho , but I decided to get something else instead - a rice plate with sliced pork and pork skin. Grilled pork spring roll was good and broken rice with grilled pork, shredded pork skin and egg cake serving was good as well. If anything though, I was expecting egg cake instead of fried egg sunny side up.. Some of the other place I've been actually made the egg cake which is like steamed egg scramble with veggies. I have visited this restaurant a number of times, and the only reason that is true is that the food is actually pretty good. If it weren't for this one redeeming quality, this would probably be a 2 or possibly even 1 star review. The decor isn't good, the music is somewhat painful random piano music, or has been every time I've visited, and the service really isn't up to par. The waitress is brief and hard to understand, and while water may be refilled, have you drained your other beverage and would like another? Better wave someone down and ask. The food isn't anything really to write home about, but the portions are large and it's usually fairly tasty. I can only rate the sandwiches as that is all I've had. They have the best Bahn Mis out of the 3 places I have been. They run about $3.40, about a buck more than they cost in Houston but that seems to be common here. I never actually tried the pho here, but I am a fan. All I have tried is the combination egg noodle. I like to have it dry, which means the soup is served on the side, not combined in the noodle bowl like how pho is served. The egg noodle is mixed in some sort of sweet soy sauce and garnish with pork slices, shrimp, fish balls and krabsticks. This dish alone is good enough to keep me coming back. read more

Darn Good Pho and More Been going to this place for years. Good Pho, best pork dishes and more. The Place The setup is normal enough, corner store in a strip center. Normal tables and a few Vietnamese themed decorations hanging on the wall. Its a corner slot so more windows which can mean hot or cold depending on the temp. Nothing exceptional good or bad. I dine at several Pho places and for some reason this one has a number of Korean and Japanese customers in addition to the American and Vietnamese. The Food Ain't this what its all about. The food is good. The menu rundown is as follows Pho- Hey that's why its called PHO Van right? Its good. Not slap your mama I wanna eat this the rest of my life good but good. The broth is well balanced, not to salty, not too bland. The meat is your standard variety of cuts with some optional entrails for the more adventurous. Comes with the plate of bean sprouts, basil, lime and Jalapenos. Got your standard sauces. Just good Honest Pho. Pork Dishes - OK, these people own the market on the sliced grilled pork. It is the BEST in town and I've eaten around. Its sweet, tangy, with a hint of smokiness. Don't know how they do it but they do it well. 24A which is grilled pork slices over steamed broken rice is not to be missed. The delectable pork is also available in dry noodle bowls, egg noodle bowls and a Baguette sandwich. Noodle Bowls - Big bowl of cooked noodles with sprouts some greens and a choice of meats. Not as good as the Pho but if your looking for a change its nice. Sandwiches - Served on a Baguette bun, variety of fillings. Their good. Fried Rice Dishes - OK but nothing exceptional. Their sides are nothing exceptional, standard issue spring rolls and egg rolls. Their marinated carrot mix is kind of weak but appreciated. Aside from the viet iced coffee I've not had much luck with the exotic drinks. Maybe too ethnic? The Service Pretty good. The head waitress is a trip. She is a very nice lady, remembers customers, expect hugs and squeezes if your a regular but you can't understand half of what she says and her demeanor doesn't come across as warm sometimes. If you order off the menu you'll be fine, if you have special request and don't speak vietnamese...be understanding..she means well. The people that own the place are pleasant and quiet. The rest of the Hispanic wait staff doesn't say a word other than announcing your dish to see who it goes to when they bring it out. Conclusion- This is one of those places that hope to find when you walk into strange, small ethnic dives in search of true flavor. read more

I've never had anything here except for the banh mi and the egg rolls. The pork banh mi here is amazing, and the quality has been consistent. I have been to many Ph type restaurants and can tell you this place serves the most authentic Ph in the Austin area. The only place I have found better authentic Pho was a place in Houston. I've been trying out pho spots since I moved back to Austin. I eat pho at least once every other week (prefer to have it every week when I can). Pho Van is my favorite so far. This was my first time eating here (after hearing a lot about their grilled pork spring rolls-which tasted pretty good but looked as if it was wrapped up by a 5 year old). Coming from a Vietnamese origin and having been pampered with AMAZING Vietnamese food in Houston, this place was quite a let down for me. I have never dealt with rude service at a Vietnamese restaurant before until this visit. I always get Bun Bo Hue at Pho places. My bowl came out and the broth was clear (bun bo hue's broth is kinda murky with red oils). I was hesitant to taste but I did. The broth might has well have been tap water. The bowl had an abundance of meats and noodles though. I asked for shrimp paste and chili oil (which is regularly served with the dish). She asked if I really needed it and insisted on me retasting my soup.I did just to appease and still put in the request. 5 mins later she comes back with only the shrimp paste and I asked for the chili. She left to retrieve it and asked if I needed anything else (as if my requests were out of this world). Its safe to say this will be my first and last time here. I could have turned the other way with the rude service (she could have had a bad day) but there is no excuse for flavorless food. read more
