Brisket pho
Kimberly W.

As a pho lover, this is a staple spot for me. Flavorful broth and the brisket is good! I ask for extra green onions and it comes out delicious. The staff is very kind and attentive, and the owner is so sweet. Very comfortable and cozy local restaurant where you feel at home. Food comes out quick and hot!!

Delicious pho and friendly service! I always have the veggie broth with mixed vegetables & tofu. Fresh and tasty with a squeeze of fresh lime. I add jalapeños for an extra spice kick. Been around for years and never disappoints.

Delicious bowl of pho! I love that the menu has so many different types of Vietnamese cuisines. All kinds of meat is available to add to your pho - beef round, meatballs, tripe, brisket, and more. I didn't know you can have so many options in just one bowl. Broth is flavorful and hot! The only feedback I would provide is that our iced Vietnamese coffees took a while. We got our drinks halfway through our lunch. Service is quick and friendly.

The service was very quick. They were eager to help as well. My phone dish was huge. Brisket and steak was delicious plus coconut water was tasty. The small pho is big. Next time I will get kids pho and appetizer.

Always great Vietnamese food since 1992! Went with my family in my teens and now I bring my own teens to eat! My sons love the Pho Tai (lean cuts of rare steak) and the Rice with Curry Chicken, with yummy sweet potatoes and succulent chicken pieces. Love the added touch of red onion and curry has a mild spicy kick (I add additional Sirarcha!) I looove the garlic honey chicken wings and pork/shrimp salad tools, my 'go-to' for appetizers. The fried egg rolls are also yummy. If you have had grilled chicken/pork/shrimp with rice...you haven't lived (Com Dac Biet)...enough for 2! Also have grilled chicken and if you don't like rice, can opt for a bed of cold rice noodles with bean sprouts and shaved carrots/diki. (Like a chef salad) Looove the Vietnamese ice coffee (ca phe sua da) with 3 shots expresso and just right amount of condensed milk (drinking the same drink over 30 years...and same high quality expresso machine). The also make a nice Thai tea, but I'm more a coffee lover. Their halo halo (Che ba mau) has homemade sweet beans (red/white) with scoops of fresh mung bean and red/green tapioca jellies...the secret is the coconut drizzle on top, a nice light additive and not overly sweet There were 2 other desserts (ginger crème brûlée, with a torched sugar glaze and banana bread pudding, a nice banana'cake' sitting on a warm banana/tapioca compote...with hints of coconut. Been coming hrrr over 30 years, and a true 'family' restaurant!

Pho Van is located in a mostly Asian business strip mall, adjacent to the Target store on Research Blvd in north Austin. There are a couple of other noodle based restos in this mall, one Ramen, the other presumably Chinese. The large Hong Kong Supermarket is closed. Pho Van looks like it's relatively new, or remodeled. The decor is simple and clean, with modern washed faux wood flooring, a long dining room long wood bench against the right wall, below a wave pattern high wainscot cutout, subtilely topped with a lavender LED light glow. There are about 16 tables, with simple danish modern wood and black seat pads, seating Mixed 2/4, well spaced, and enough room to add another row if demand required it. The left wall is all glass, like the front, so a clean, airy feel to the room. The back wall has a 4 seat bar left, snd and a pay counter right, both accented with plastic wall greenery. There are several real indoor plants around the entry door divider. Each table has Sriracha,Hoysin and Red Chili squeeze bottles. They offer the standard Viet diner type food, with an emphasis on Pho, it's in their name after all! But also a good selection of Banh Mi sandwiches, appetizers, and other dishes. I came at an off time, around 3pm, so there were only a few diners. Nonetheless, service was prompt, and the food came out quickly. The hostess was Vietnamese, the cook too, the table servers were Latino, but all spoke decent English. I ordered the N5, small, (Pho Tai, Nam) which is thin sliced round and flank steak. ( small = $12.25) Also A2. Cha Gio, or small egg rolls (2= $5.50). The flank steak was good quality. The round typical, The Cha Gio was hot out of the fryer crispy. Good condiments. The food here is good and reasonably priced, especially compared to the Bay Area, and service was good, too. I have lost count, but this Pho review is somewhere between my 100th and 150th Yelp review on Vietnamese restaurants and/or Pho, all over North America! Check out my collections for it here on Yelp!

A1 - Fresh spring roll

Ordered pickup and they were quick and kind! I got an order of fresh spring rolls with shrimp. The peanut sauce was ok and a little more thin. Than I'd prefer. The pho ga (chicken) was good! I'm normally not a big soup or pho person, but this was exactly what I needed.

Toppings for pho were fresh and spring rolls pictured in the back

The place is very spacious and clean with lots of options on the menu. The staff were nice and they had quick service. We ordered the pork fresh spring rolls, pho N8 & N9. The spring rolls had a good ratio of filling and a nice crunch from the fresh vegetables. The pork was flavorful and charred well. The peanut sauce that came with it was a bit too sweet for me. As for the pho, I feel like the broth could have been better. Although the food had good flavor, and the toppings for the pho were fresh, the amount of meat per bowl was lacking. They also only added a very small amount of tripe to my N9 (1-2 small pieces) which was a bit disappointing. Overall, it was good and I would go again to try other dishes.

Good Vietnamese food. Sometimes I go and it's super awesome and sometimes not as flavorful. Ordering to go is hit or miss. Pictured below is one of the times it was super good

Still one of my Favorite Vietnamese places in town. They've redone the interior / much nicer. Coffee is one of the best in town - super strong - just how I like it. The vermicelli bowl (bun) was excellent!

Went here for lunch on a Sunday and got a table super fast! The service was AMAZING!!! Everyone was so kind and friendly, my friend left his keys and a staff ran out to the parking lot to return it. We got the bun bo hue and pho and both were really good! The bun bo hue was very flavorful, one of my favs in Austin. The pho was delicious too! The newly decorated place is also beautiful. Will definitely be back :D

I love pho van, personally it's my favorite pho in Austin, their broth is just so rich and the meat is so tender, I've never had a bad bowl.

I had my boyfriend pick up the food and he forgot to check for the hoisin sauce. I can't eat pho without it, so I called the store and was told it was offered but that he must not have heard the employee asking. I tried to eat the pho anyway, and it ended up being one of the worst bowls of pho I've ever had. I'm Vietnamese, so I know what good pho should taste like. The broth was extremely bland and watered down, with no aroma or real pho flavor. Without hoisin sauce it was even worse. I tried adding seasoning to make it taste decent but nothing helped. The noodles were also hard and clumped together in one big chunk. I had to microwave them for about three minutes just to get them to separate. In the end, I gave up and threw away our 2 -$18 bowl of pho. The broth tasted worse than instant pho. Very disappointing. I should have known better than to order pho downtown.

The color wasn't too light, so I appreciated that they didn't go heavy on the condensed milk. Summer Rolls/Nem Nuong Cuon ($11): These were underwhelming, pretty bland without the peanut sauce, which I thought was just okay as well. OG Banh Mi ($14): Delicious! It was one of our top two banh mi here, along with the lamb one. The bread was nicely toasted, the pâté came through, and all the flavors were on point. Garlic Butter Prawn Bún ($18): The shrimp were perfectly cooked, though the garlic butter flavor wasn't very strong. The vermicelli and veggies were so fresh and tasty together with the nuoc mam that I was able to eat the leftovers without any protein. Curry Ramen ($16): This was our first time trying curry ramen, so we didn't know what to expect. You got to choose your protein, so we went with chashu. The curry had flavors similar to oc len xa dua and was pretty good, and the ramen itself had a great texture. I still prefer regular ramen but would still recommend trying this at least once.

But it also has egg and scallions and pate; overall the combo is satisfying. Separate from takeout, we decided to go for an early dinner. Their Crab Vermicelli Stir Fry is surprisingly sweet, with sweetness as a prominent flavor. It features plenty of crab bits. I also grabbed a Skillet Combo. It came with two runny side up eggs, pate, two types of cured pork, beef gravy, and a handful of cilantro. The baguette came on the side, as did the mixed salad of lettuce and tomato. The salad had some dried shrimp, fish sauce, and a slightly sweet dressing. The restaurant itself is located in the Chinatown Center on N Lamar. It's a small corner shop. Lots of mirrors and glass. The staff are friendly enough. Unfortunately, they've closed, and it looks like another restaurant will be opening up in its place. The situation leaves me unsure about where to go to satisfy savory sticky rice cravings.

The flavor was on the slightly bland or mild side (very subjective, and I ddin't add extra sauce), but I appreciated that it didn't seem to have MSG. This place is legit when you see that it is full of local Viet on a Sunday afternoon!…read more The menu is pretty good with authentic Vietnamese food but we normally come here for the S1 Ribeye Hot Stone Pho. They bring out the meat and noodles separately and then the soup in the stone bowl. This time the asked me if I wanted all the greens-- lime wedges, basil leaves, jalapeño slices and bean sprouts. I never eat the bean spouts but use everything else and it always seems a waste of bean sprouts when I don't use them so I was thankful to have them hold the bean sprouts. Be careful as the soup is extremely hot and the hot stone bowl keeps it that way for a while. You fill the bowl to the brim after adding all the meats and noodles. My only complaint is the noodles. They are fresh and just the right texture... very good! But for some reason the always seem to get cut up after I put them into the bowl. Not sure if they cut them before hand but they end up cut short when put them in the bowI. I prefer long slurpy noodles over cut noodles that's hard to pick up with chopsticks. Overall I still give it 5 stars and this one of the two best pho spots in the greater Austin area
