The Great Leopold
Nya A.

On a Saturday night, this place was packed! The line all the way to the gate when you enter, and someone was greeting you to direct you to wherever you aimed to be in The Vortex. The person greeting us, even shared some insights for some upcoming shows. They'd be having that seem great to attend. It's fun to have that sense of community being welcomed into the restaurant as soon as you get there! We split up, and I went to grab seats while the other member of my party stood in line. Seating wasn't difficult, and it was well ventilated, which was highly favorable and much appreciated in the heat with missing fans, running constantly, cute ambience, lighting with the small bulb lights, and even bug spray available they make sure that this dining experience was covered on all bases so that you would have a great one. The menus are easily accessible, with multiple copies, being passed down the line, and sitting in the stand as soon as you walk up. However, after hearing about the restaurant online, and taking some time to read the menu prior to arrival, I knew what was on my mind - carbonara. From arrival to ordering with maybe about a 30 to 40 minute wait however, it was worthwhile. The dishes are made to order, with fresh pasta being used, making it even better. We opted for two half orders to share, and that was definitely enough food because we ended up even taking leftovers. We also got an order of the garlic bread with tons of roasted garlic, parmesan, and green onions. While the carbonara was flavorful and what my mind was initially set on, the other pasta actually ended up stealing the show and was what we finished immediately the Leopold had a pesto base and a nice hint of spice even without the peppers (which were taken off in our order). Overall, the most difficult part of this meal was parking, and the fight was completely forgotten after my first taste. They have a small lot, however, if you circled the nearby neighborhood a couple times you're sure to find a place to put your car.

This spot was a favorite in college, and it's only gotten better since! They've recently renovated the food truck area, and it looks super elevated. Missed the summer happy hour deal this time, but I will definitely be back for it. Only outside seating here, but plenty of fans and mists make it pleasant even for a hot Austin weeknight. We got the Marfa tomatoes, Patrizi's salad, and the bruschetta-- I typically go for the garlic bread, but so glad I tried the bruschetta this time around, as it was delicious! The bread at Patrizi's is truly unmatched in any form. Marfa tomatoes were so fresh!! Entrees: the Great Leopold and Karah's Diavolo (we had a ton of leftovers, as the portions are deceptively large). Love having so many vegetarian options and especially one with a nut-free pesto. Finally, the kitchen happened to have an extra beets dish and passed it over to us (which was so nice!!)-- I will actually order this one in the future as the taste was splendid and unique. Can't wait to come back!!

Carbonara with Chicken

Wow just wow! I have lived in Austin for 6 months now but I truly haven't explore the Italian cuisine as much in Austin being from New Jersey I have high expectations. Patrizi's definitely made me feel like I was transported back to NJ. I got a half size of Carbonara Alexandra and added chicken. Everything about the pasta did not disappoint the sauce, the pancetta, anch cheese all mixed together so nicely. I came here on a Friday night so I expected for us to wait quite a bit for our pasta as I have heard it takes a while, but I was surprised when it came out much earlier than I expected. They only have outdoor seating but they have a lot of fans to beat the Texas heat but just be prepared to sweat. This will definitely be added into my rotation when I'mcraving something that feels like home.

Patrizis has been and will continue to be my favorite pasta place in Austin. Their Diavolo pasta is literally unbeatable. It is zesty, spicy, bright and so flavorful. Literally the best in all of Austin. Bring that it's at a food truck, their service is pretty good. Theres always someone who pops into the line to explain the menu. And is located at the butterfly bar where you can have drinks with friends

Cacio e Pepe with chicken added

I went in with very low expectations (not sure why?!) The sauces were all the excellent and unique. The meatball and chicken were both great additions! The bruschetta with eggplant caponata was delicious! Their bread was so good and then you put the delicious eggplant on top - chef's kiss! The seasonal salad was farro, sweet potatoes and other interesting things with feta cheese. I didn't think I would like it because I don't like sweet things, but it was excellent. If you like spice, add the chilis for $1.50. They're great. Ironically, I didn't think the pasta was anything too different considering it was fresh pasta, but everything was very well executed.

A classic spot off the bustling Manor Road, Patrizi's offers comfort food after a long day. Although I'm a bigger fan of their brick and mortar location, the food truck spot offers more of that classic weird Austin vibe. Found in the Vortex, the outdoor seating is just beautiful and you get to experience all of the events that they have in the space while you dine. I also love to get a drink from the butterfly bar while I wait for my food as their decor is so quirky and fun to look at. On to Patrizi's itself, this is just classic Austin. I always opt to get the pasta and salad combo as I feel it gets you the best bang for your buck. I'm a fan of either the diavolo or the pesto leopold's as both taste so amazing and has that citrus punch that I like. Surprisingly, their salads take the cake for me because they're so refreshing and the ingredients all come together to make a really high-quality salad. The garlic bread is the la grand damme of the menu as the bread is baked perfectly with an unmatched crisp when you bite into it and the garlic confit on top is to die for.

Garlic bread and Patrizis Red Sauce with a meatball
Nick F.

I enjoyed my meal at Patrizi's. It wasn't the traditional Italian meal that I was looking for though. The garlic bread was a different take on garlic bread and although, it was tasty, it just wasn't traditional. The Patrizi's red sauce and meatball were very good, but I felt there were just too many things put on top of the spaghetti and meatball and it should've been able to speak for itself. Next time, I will probably go to the indoor location. The outdoor location provided too many mosquito bites this time.

Patrizi's is my favorite spot for handmade fettuccine--honestly, some of the best pasta I've ever had. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves fresh pasta. The East Austin location can get pretty busy, so it's best to arrive early if you want to avoid a long wait. The spacious patio is very dog-friendly, and there's an indoor bar right across from the food truck where you can grab a drink or a glass of wine while waiting. There's even a cute cat that roams around, which adds to the charm. The Carbonara Alexandra has always been my favorite. The addition of the runny egg yolk makes the sauce extra creamy and rich, and once you start eating it, it's genuinely hard to stop.

You can taste how fresh the homemade pasta and sauces are. Every time I've come I've enjoyed the dishes I've tried. Definitely recommend the garlic bread and the carbonara. I haven't tried the desserts or other apps because I get so full. The line can be a little daunting, but it goes by quickly and food will come to your table within about 20 minutes. While you're waiting, get a drink inside! They have cats roaming around so you'll most likely have a little friend near by your table.

Marfa Tomatoes Salad, Pasta
Alex W.

They make everything from scratch so it takes a bit to get the food. The Marfa tomato salad was probably the highlight - so good! Wasn't the biggest fan of the pasta type and there was no option to change it. The meatball was +$5 and had a lot of parsley in it. Tastes authentic but overall wasn't too impressed with the pasta entree.

Stopped by Patrizis on a Friday night with a friend for dinner. Parking is brutal, be prepared to look for street parking a few blocks away. The line is super long - I waited for about half an hour to place my order. Service was so friendly and helpful - they even gave me a complimentary piece of garlic bread as it was my first time, so thoughtful! I ordered the pasta & salad combo - Patrizis salad & Patrizis red sauce. I grabbed a table in the lovely covered patio, and waited another 40 mins for my food. After all the waiting I was starving. Patrizi Salad - 10/10 delicious. Definitely try! Garlic Bread - Chefs kiss! Freshly baked, soft, and topped with fresh flavorful garlic. Patrizi Pasta with Red Sauce - 6/10. So disappointing! The pasta itself was clearly made in house and delicious + fresh but the sauce was underwhelming and way too sweet for my taste. It was a good experience but I expected more. Not sure it's worth the hype.

Patrizi's Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Patrizi's

Can you bring a bottle of wine?

No, Patrizi's is not BYOB. There is a bar inside.

Are there bathrooms?

Yes. There is an indoor bar

Hi. After reading so many amazing reviews I was wondering if you can order ahead and then stay and eat at the picnic tables?

I think the only 'ordering ahead' would be via their online website. But online orders are for "takeaway" only. The hostess at the front doesn't allow those picking up online orders to dine at the picnic tables

It looks like everything in the photos is on paper plates? Is that the situation?

Yep! It's part of a wonderful vibrant area called the Vortex. You have a bar, little booths and this restaurant. They get food to your table in paper plates

Does anybody know what is going on with this place? This is the second night in a row we've tried to order from them and their website says "sold out" for everything? This is 1/6/21 - are they closed? If anyone has any insight, please share.

Yes they are open. Call early to order before they sell out.

Is it a dog friendly patio?

Yes they adore dogs!

Do they do to go orders?

Yes they do!

Do they have heater's?

Yes, they have outdoor heat lamps everywhere and a fire pit. Last night was a chilly 45 degrees and I sat between the fire pit and a heat lamp, I had no problem sitting the whole night to eat pasta and listen to the live music.

Do they have any gluten free options for persons with celiac disease?

No, on the website they say they stopped offering gf food because they have flour everywhere.

What's the "kid friendly" situation here?

It's just like hangin out in someone's backyard.

There were very few tables open when we arrived, and even leaving closer to 7 there were still a good number of open tables. We found service to be fast and very friendly/attentive. We started with a timballo appetizer, which came stuffed with brisket and was really good! I'd never heard of timballo before, and from googling it appears theirs is quite a bit different than what you'd likely find elsewhere. Theirs is made primarily of risotto fried into a puck shape. It was really yummy and I'd definitely recommend. We the shared a pizza and pasta for the main course. We had a braised pork gnocchi for the pasta. It was solid, but probably my least favorite part of the meal. The gnocchi was very light and had more of a fall apart texture. The braised pork really overpowered any other flavors, and made it a bit of a one note dish We had a cambozola pizza with mushrooms and caramelized onions that was really good! Much less funky than I was expecting, but still a great flavor combination. There were quite a few intriguing pizza options, and you get much more quantity for a similar price than the pasta. I'll probably lean more in the pizza direction in the future For dessert we tried a few of the chocolate truffles which came highly recommended. I appreciate that they also gave some samples of a vanilla chai chocolate bark before we ordered dessert. The truffles were very rich and chocolatey, but the flavor notes were honestly hard to notice. I was particularly surprised that a white chocolate lemon truffle (still covered in non-white chocolate on the outside) was much more chocolatey than anything else I will also say that the service was some of the best I've experienced in Austin. Our server was super friendly, gave helpful recommendations, and was very on top of clearing our plates between courses. Overall I had a very good experience and would definitely recommend giving them a try if you live in Austin and are looking for a nicer Italian spot!

I came with a very large party of 10. It was August in Austin, so it was extremely hot, but they sat us outside. There were can with water spritz around of table, but the water spritzing became too much, so we asked to turn it off. Without the fan, we could feel the heat!! Also, when it got dark outside, it was very hard to see in front of us. This was my only complaint because everything else was perfect! I just wish the dining area was better. The menu is pretty small and there aren't a ton of variety options to pick from. I like this though! To me, it shows that they care what they are putting out. Quality over quantity. We got the bread appetizer and the fruit salad appetizer. The bread so was amazing with the whipped ricotta cream. The bread (I think was foccia) was amazing and fluffy and I could have had three order of this lol. The local fruit salad was a little spicy for me, which I wasn't expecting, but it was very refreshing! For my entree, I got the ravioli with red fish inside. I wasn't expecting the fish to be in the ravioli, but it was delicious and actually very filling. I could taste the quality of the pasta in every bite. It was light and airy but filling. I wish there were more raviolis because it was delicious. This was a very delicious experience.

We went on a Thursday night and it was pretty busy, but everyone who came in was still able to get a table. It feels very authentic.
