    Dweji-Gomtang (regular)

We stopped in for lunch on a quiet Thursday, though the small space was already fairly full. The restaurant has an open kitchen with counter seating only, omakase-style. The setup is simple and clean. Our server, who was also cooking, was friendly and the service was quick. Given the size of the space, the very limited menu made sense. Overall, the food was good, but I came specifically for the dweji gomtang after seeing it on Culinary Class Wars. I understand the dish is meant to be clean, light, and refreshing, but I personally found it a bit underseasoned. The broth didn't quite have enough depth to carry a full bowl of rice. My husband enjoyed his pork donkatsu, though it's hard to go wrong with a piece of fried pork. He also liked their kimchi, which was very clean-tasting, but again I felt it could have used a bit more seasoning. I did appreciate the simplicity of their bean paste, which tasted homemade and very clean. In fact, I ended up relying on the bean paste to add flavor to my rice since the overall meal leaned quite mild. I didn't see any salt on the table and felt a little awkward asking for some, but in hindsight I probably should have, it likely would have made my meal more enjoyable. I can see how the food could appeal to people who enjoy very clean, minimalist flavors. It's thoughtfully prepared, but it may just not suit my palate.

Came here with some friends after watching culinary class wars. I was so excited to try this dish as it's what got the contestant to go on to the next round Honestly, I don't think it's anything too special. It's definitely unique as I haven't had something like this before but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. The soup is very clean and simple We also got the pork donkatsu and I would say that dish left a more lasting impression for me as it was crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. The seasoning was perfect as well. Normally, I don't like Korean dumplings but the kimchi mandoo here was amazing

I really wanted to try the pork collar but unfortunately it wasn't available for take out. Ended up getting the dweji gomtang and the lard donkatsu. Packaged beautifully and both were delectable. The pork katsu was soft and crunchy, tender and the sides were nice complements: potato salad and cabbage. The soup for the dweji gomtang was calm and light. There were thin slices of pork on top, lightly seasoned. I should come back next time to try the pork collar.

Sometimes simplicity is the way to go! The chefs here knows what they're doing! The place is fairly small with a small menu. Recommend in coming with a +1 kind of spot. We ordered the Dweji-Gomtang, Naeng Jeyuk and the Lard Donkatsu. The Dweji-Gomtang has that pork essence it has the right amount of fattiness to it and bathe in a clean broth with rice under. It's like it's healthy but not at the same time! The Naeng Jeyuk was probably the best! slow cooked pork where you wrap it with the leaves and kimchi really hits the spot! Don't sleep on the Katsu as well! I was actually surprised how well it was fried. Not too oily, not over cooked or dry. It was cooked to perfection. I simply love these small shop spots. Where the chefs have mastered their craft! Doesn't have to be fancy, or exotic. Sometimes it just needs to be made the right way.

As avid fans of Culinary Class Wars, we were curious about Okdongsik after starting the second season. Evidently others felt the same because there was quite a wait when we went! We stopped in around 12PM on a Sunday, put our names down on their electronic waitlist, and waited about an hour before being seated. (It wasn't a problem since we explored the shops nearby, but the wait seemed to be an issue for those who came later and reached the 2:30PM end of lunch cutoff!) We of course had to try the famous dweji gomtang, and we got the kimchi mandu and shrimp katsu on the side as well. The dweji gomtang definitely had a clean and pure pork taste to it. I'll admit I found it a little one-note and perhaps not as mind-blowing as I've seen others rave about, but it was still delicious! I was just glad to have gotten the flavorful mandu and crispy katsu to round out the meal.

I came here for lunch. There was no line at 1130 am when it first opened, but it filled up by 12pm. Theres an IPad where you can be put on the waitlist. It goes fast so we were seated in 15 mins. The place is designed like an omakase bar. It has seats that wraps around and the staff is inside. Their menu is small, but I like quality over quantity. They specialize on the beef gomtang. They offer it in regular and a large. The large just has more meat. I thought the regular had a good amount of meat already. It comes with a separate dipping sauce for the meat. I found the soup and meat to be bland, but the rice had a nice chewy texture. My favorite dish is actually the pork katsu. The potato salad was so good and so are the other sides that it came with. The shrimp katsu was good too. The pork collar was okay. The kimchi mandu was really good. The skin was thin and the filling was flavorful. Yes the chef was on Netflix Culinary Wars.

We were hesitated to go in for the first time because it looked like a omakase place. But it actually a place with very limited menu. That means it is very good at that specific dish. In the beginning, it only had Korean gomtang as entree. It was wonderful! I had gomtang in other Korean restaurants but this one was other level. The pork was soft and tasty. The soup was clear, fresh and comforting. Per instructions, adding gojujang on the meat... it tasted so good! And with that price, I felt like other places were overpriced. Not to mention, the kimchi dumplings were great too. Recently, we went there again. I am glad that the menu expanded. I still order the yummy gomtang and my husband ordered katsu set. The Katsu was well-executed. My friend had solongtang and it looked really good. I think I will try next time. Yes, I will go again!

Okdongsik in Bayside is a great fast casual spot. Reminiscent of their Korean location that only has bar seating, it can definitely get busy if you come at peak times. The broth is clean and fresh and nourishing on a cold day. Would recommend the seafood pancake! I personally am not of a fan of their mandu even in the Korean location but I preferred the dumplings here to the ones in Korea. If you are missing the one in Korea or looking to try it out, would recommend!

Came to Okdongsik after watching culinary class wars 2 and everything was as expected. The place in Bayside was pretty small, probably seats 10-12 people at a time, but I assume it's less crowded than the Manhattan one. We arrived at 11:25a for 11:30a opening on a weekend but there was already a line outside and we were the second round to be seated, so the wait was about 1 hour. When we got seated, the staff were very efficient. Not too many things on the menu so we ordered most of the dishes right away. Everything tasted awesome! The pork rice soup was as expected, a very well made meat soup, with very subtle but quality in the flavors. The pork slices were thin, soft, and flavorful, one of the most tender pork pieces I've ever tried. The kimchi mandoo was very good as well, looks ordinary but tastes pretty amazing. Would definitely come again if we are around the area!

Came here on a cold winter night. The server was very nice. Very helpful also giving his recommendations on the menu. We ordered almost everything haha. The soup was delicious. Not a super strong tasting soup but it tasted so clean. The meat was delicious. We got the katsu and it was crispy and juicy. The kimchi dumplings were good. Spicy for me but delicious. It definitely lived up to its popularity.

Had a wonderful lunch with friends with Sous Chef Jimmy at the helm. The open wrap around counter seating is cool - you get a good view of the prep and plating action, no matter where you sit. The ambiance is Sirene and the decor is simple, clean and aesthetically pleasing. The plan here was to sample as many dishes as possible and we shared everything as a group. Each dish had it's own star quality about it and it was hard to pick a favorite. Personally I loved the simmered pork collar meat with radish salad, called the Gabrisal Suyuk. Each piece was tender, moist and had just the right amount of fat on the trim. It was a standout dish. Of course the draw was the signature Dweji-Gometang. That pork bone broth was clean and refreshing. Thinly sliced pork served at the perfect temperature and rice soaked in the soup to boot. It's a bowl that feeds your soul. My second favorite dish of the day. A must try - Kimchi dumplings. Spicy and simple - a delicious flavor profile. Honestly, everything I ordered, I enjoyed. The pork Donkatsu is also a must try. Crispy exterior, tender pork and savory. I could've eaten the whole thing by myself! For a boutique dining experience, this is easily a favorite. Prices are very reasonable, good value and the food is just elevated. The taste reminds me of home cooked meals but in a fancier presentation - it is Michelin Bib-Gourmond rated. I can see why!

The Dweji Gomtang. Surrounded by a side dish of kimchi and Gochuji. To the right of the bowl, a cup of barley tea.

I have wanted to try this place for a while and I finally had the occasion. I was one of the first customers when the restaurant opened for the day, and I could not think of a better time than to get away from the winter cold. I ordered the first item on the menu, Dweji Gomtang--a bone broth with thinly sliced pork and rice at the bottom. Included in the broth were leeks and some powdered pepper. The dish is comforting, and the staff are hospitable. The waiters only stay behind the counter, and everyone--where alone or in a party--ate seated at one counter facing large pots of broth. Each person also receives a side dish of kimchi, a dollop of gochujang sauce, along with a cup of barley tea. While the space may seem small, everyone has their own designated space for eating. The ambiance is welcoming but you are expected to not overstay after you have had your fill.

DoorDash experience review! I had a pretty hectic Saturday morning at work, so I decided to give myself a little treat. I had wanted to go to Okdongsik before, but I missed all my opportunities in NYC and in Seoul. My jaw dropped when I saw the Bayside location on DD the other day. Now, I come from Busan, which is their region known for pork bone soups (dweji gukbap), so I've had really good and really bad versions of this dish. Also, we make this at home sometimes. I think when talking about Okdongsik, the price gets mentioned. This is a very underrated dish because even just regular dweji gukbap is difficult to make well. Just because this is an Asian dish with humble ingredients does not mean this deserves to be priced less than a plate of steak. (Doordash upcharged a dollar for the soups and two for all the side stuff... that, I have a gripe with!) The order of gweji gomtang came with a bowl of rice and pork slices, a container of soup separated, a small container of radish kimchi (seokbakji) and a red pepper paste (gochu-ji). The soups is so clear and clean but flavorful. If you ever made this dish before, you'd know just this requires a lot of artistry. Add in the thin pork slices that remind you of thinly-sliced honey ham-- so tender but no weird gaminess we sometimes get from pork. The only criticism I had was of the rice. We usually warm up the rice by rinsing with the hot soup a few times before pouring the soup in to be served (in a process called "toryum"). Unfortunately the quality of the rice was not it. It seemed like they used a cheap variety and therefore the soup flavor never really soaked into the rice and the whole mouthfeel felt almost grainy. As for the sides, the radish kimchi was nothing remarkable. The mashed pepper paste tasted very fresh and was unique. I put a tiny bead of it on top of every bite of meat (as to not ruin the clarity of the soup). I'm very excited that Okdongsik has opened in Queens and that I was able to taste very good quality Korean meal in the middle of the work day. Now, I am excited to try them at their Bayside location with my family.
