Jang Dok Dae - A Hidden Gem with a Seoulful Touch Tucked unassumingly into a quiet stretch of town, Jang Dok Dae is the kind of mom-and-pop Korean restaurant that makes you believe in culinary serendipity again. Step inside, and you're immediately greeted not by fanfare or trend-chasing décor, but by something far rarer--warmth, authenticity, and a quiet confidence that the food will speak for itself. And speak it does, in bold, layered, and harmonious flavors. The meal begins humbly with a pot of rice tea--nutty, toasty, and comforting, its aroma filling the air like a gentle overture to the feast ahead. What follows is a masterclass in balance and craftsmanship: a tomato salad that's deceptively simple yet bright and refreshing, each slice glistening with light dressing and a whisper of sesame. The kimchi pancake crackles at the edges, its spicy tang tamed by a satisfying crispness that makes each bite addictive. Then come the stars--stuffed rice cakes, chewy and delicate, filled with a richness that anchors the meal in Korean tradition; beef bulgogi, tender ribbons of marinated meat that shimmer with soy, garlic, and just the right kiss of sweetness; and finally, grilled pork belly, smoky and succulent, the kind of dish that demands silence around the table as everyone savors the moment. For a modest mom-and-pop operation, the presentation is astonishing--each plate arranged with care, colors dancing across the table like an artist's palette. But it's the sincerity of the cooking that truly elevates Jang Dok Dae. You can taste the pride, the patience, and the lineage behind every dish. And the service? Warm, attentive, and genuinely kind--never rushed, never perfunctory. It's the sort of hospitality that turns a meal into a memory. In a city obsessed with the next big thing, Jang Dok Dae is a reminder that greatness often resides in the unassuming--where tradition meets heart, and every bite tells a story worth listening to. -- A triumph of flavor, craft, and soul.

Terrible meal, and completely unjustified for the price we paid. We originally came for the raw crab, but they were out due to the off-season, which is understandable. However, things went downhill from there. We asked for the aged LA galbi, but they didn't have that either, so we settled for the regular LA galbi and galbitang. For $33, the galbi was thick-cut but extremely chewy, tough, and lacking flavor. The portion size was also surprisingly small. The galbitang was even more disappointing. It came with just three small pieces of beef rib, one tiny piece of radish, one tiny piece of carrot, and one tiny piece of potato, and about a spoonful of glass noodles, and the broth had virtually no depth or flavor. While the beef was technically tender, it felt overcooked and dry rather than moist and satisfying, typical of galbitang. To make matters worse, when we asked for sesame oil with salt, the server reacted as if we were asking for something blasphemous and said, "no good." Unfortunately, she was correct it was not good. I wouldn't be requesting it to begin with otherwise. Overall, a very disappointing experience. We won't be returning.

The scallion pancake with seafood is delicious!

The scallion pancake with seafood is to die for! My husband and I order it every time we come here. There's a generous portion of seafood and it's fried to perfection! I also highly recommend the gingseng stuffed chicken soup. All the dishes here taste freshly cooked and made with love. The menu isn't huge and the side dishes are small and don't have much variety, but the food is delicious! Highly recommend giving them a try if you are in the area.

Wonderful mom and pop restaurant in bayside queens. The lady was definitely overwhelmed with all the customers, but we were very satisfied. All the food was fantastic including the free sides and salad. The only dish that surprised me was the dry aged short ribs, definitely something to get used to.

One of the best mom and pop Korean shops I've been to. Every dish we ordered was delicious from their fresh and tasty bon chon to the seafood pancake, gal I, and kimchi stew! They were all delicious!! Can't wait to come back and try the food. I would say that there is only one server and cook in the kitchen so it does take some time for the food to be made and served but motherless, all delicious!! Can't wait to come back.

Update: Takeout lunch the following day. Got the bulgogi! Same friendly reception, and food was delicious!

Very prettily decorated with murals and plants. Has a homely feel to it. Service was quick and friendly. They serve fresh banchan: a tomato salad, spicy fish cakes, cabbage and daikon kimchi, and spicy eggplants They also serve a cold tea. I'm not sure what kind of tea it was, but it reminded of fruit loops for some reason. Maybe the slight sweetness with the earthy taste. Very good, but interesting for my taste buds. I was craving crab, so I got the Ganjanggejang (raw marinated crab), which comes with 2 crabs and rice. The crabs were in season, so they had lots of roe! They were well marinated, which was delicious when mixed with the rice. Got a glove to hold the crab while I scooped out its innards. Great Korean spot for homemade dishes!

Korean Food For All! I have always craved Korean food but had difficulties placing orders due to the language barrier. From the moment you walk in, I knew this was a different kind of place. Even on the gloomy day I walked in, the cheery ambiance brightened my mood. The menu was handwritten in plain English - the handwriting alone should be a font! Everything explained in plain old English with elaboration by your server if needed. Perhaps now is a good time to mention how good the food is?!? Food came out blazing hot and plentiful and quite yummy. If you are afraid of spicy, not to worry - they will spice by request. The food is catered to the Carnivore or Vegan in your life... Although there is only street parking, it is relatively easy to find and definitely worth your time! Perhaps now is a good time to try some very good Korean fare!!

HIDDEN GEM HOLE IN THE WALL MOM AND POP SHOP I've been coming here frequently for the last year and it is my absolutely #1 favorite place to get lunch or dinner. :) All the dishes here are so fresh, clean, and DELICIOUS. You CANNOT come here WITHOUT trying the chive seafood pancake! Absolutely the BEST SEAFOOD PANCAKE YOU WILL EVER TRY. It is soo crispy and packed with seafood. I honestly can't eat seafood pancakes at other restaurants anymore because no other place can compare or top this one ..... Other than that I usually get their kimchi jjigae, aged pork belly, aged short rib, and their fishes (but I've also tried multiple other dishes depending what I'm feeling, these are usually just my go to.) PLEASE BE PATIENT when coming here because the owners are the only ones running this place. The owners are working very hard to cook, clean, and serve everyone. If you are in a rush, please do not come during peak hours. (But definitely come back when you aren't in a rush or come earlier in the day). Please keep in mind they are also usually closed from 4-5pm for a lunch break (again the owners are the only ones running this place, they need a break and to eat too!) They serve different salads/side dishes/fruits from time to time so you may not be getting the same thing every time. Their menu sometimes changes throughout the year as well. Bring cash if you can, there's a 5% cash discount. FUN FACTS: When you go in, you'll notice the artwork and decorations right away. Everything was handmade and designed by the owner themselves and all the lovely artwork was also painted by the owner The tea they serve you is also different everyday and is also made by the owner themselves!

Came in for early dinner, i was told this place can get busy. My daughter had been here for lunch service a couple of months ago and she mentioned the food is very good. Tonight we order a scallion oancaje with shrimp and shredded pork with vegetables platter. It was only the 2 of us, would have liked more food to try the rest of menu but that will be for the next time. The pancake had very good size shrimps, very tasty, nice crunchy edges. The shredded pork platter was served in a sizzling cast iron platter. Very tasty pork, well seasoned, nice mix of purple onions, eggplant, zucchini, carrots, soya beans and a slightly spicy-sweet sauce. Both were good size servings. I love the decorations around the room, from the outside you really cannot figure out what ti expect. Suddenly you step inside and its a very stylish, home like environment with lots of hand made paintings and artifacts on the walls. I feel like i am visiting an artist or a painter from all the paintings and murals built into the walls. Extremely clean tables and the one lady serving us tonight was very sweet, attentive and courteous. Will definitely come back with more family to taste the rest of the menu. You get a discount if you oay cash, otherwise you can use your CC and pay the credit card fee.

The food here was delicious and tasted like a home cooked meal. The ambiance definitely makes you feel like you are home. The service was good as well considering it was one person working the floor and one person working the kitchen.

    Fried Spanish Mackerel

Came here for late lunch on a Sunday and everything is delicious. It's fun supporting mom and pop shops! We had the - Spanish Mackerel and it was very tasty with no hint of fishiness Kimchi Chigae with pork rib. The soup was super savory, rich, and sour from the kimchi. The pork ribs were a little bit dry though Bulgolgi was exactly what it should be and the added vegetables added some lightness to the dish. It is a very big portion too.

    Seafood pancake with chives

The starter tomato salad was fresh but seemed odd to have in a Korean meal. The banchans flavors were meh--there was kimchi, fish cake, and beansprouts. Everything came piping hot. The seafood pancake was very good - super crispy and came with a large heaping of seafood pieces. I ordered a beef kalguksu (which is pretty much a beef noodle soup), and the soup flavor was good with a few pieces of meat. But all in all, it was very basic, nothing to blow my mind. There was a tad too much onions and scallions. I think they accidentally charged me for the beef short rib noodle soup instead of the beef noodle soup which was a $5 difference. If you pay with cash there's a discount, if you pay with card, there's a 2% fee on top.

What's a unique dish or off the menu you'd recommend trying at this restaurant that's not available elsewhere? Obviously we'd be getting the standard fare like seafood pancake, ribs, etc too. Thanks

She couldn't catch 1 second of break :( Food wise, we got their 2 person combo of spicy pork gamja tang and spicy rice cake which came with the steamed egg. Everything was so good, egg was extra fluffy, rice cake was delicious and the meat came right off the bones. They take a good variety of side dishes. My partner wasn't a fan of the gamja tang but due to feeling it's a hassle to eat meat with bones, so those who fee sim may agree. The inside is casual,…read moreand our waitress, Jane, was extremely friendly and helpful from refilling banchan to cooking meats and otherwise. A couple of us shared a $13 bottle of the green grape flavor of Chum Churum, a soju. In terms of banchan, there was a bunch. Everyone got a cold and refreshing cabbage soup as well as a very tasty version of Braised Tofu/Dubu-jorim/두부조림. Once we ordered, we also got a bunch of other banchan, including cabbage, radish, and cucumber Kimchi, broccoli and cauliflower Namul, Marinated Mushrooms/Beoseot Bokkeum/버섯볶음, Anchovies With Peanuts/Myeolchi Bokkeum/멸치볶음, and Potato/Gamja Salad/감자샐러드. One of the other things brought out was a pretty tasty version of Raw Soy Sauce Marinated Crab/Ganjang-Gejang/간장게장. Most of these were refillable. The first actual thing that arrived was something that I can't eat, the $22.99 Seafood Pancake/Haemul Pajeon/해물파전. I have a cephalopod allergy, or in other words, anything with tentacles, so I avoid squid and octopus, and seafood pancakes always contain one of those two. Everyone else enjoyed it, though. The pajeon I could eat was the Kimchi Jeon/김치전 for a dollar less. It was pretty tasty, though I prefer other spots that had a bit more of a crisp. Next was one of their signatures, the grilled duck. Going from online reviews, we went with the non-spicy version, as people prefer it, as the spicier marinade overpowers the duck. This was the $29.99 Sang Ori Gui/생오리구이. The sliced duck was on a hot, sizzling plate, with there also being a lot of grilled onions and scallions. The duck had a mix of pieces, ranging from fatty to less so, and had a nice mix of textures. This was easily one of my favorites, though I liked it even more when paired with the ssamjang that arrived with the BBQ, as the sauce balanced the light fattiness. Arriving at a similar time was the last thing I couldn't eat, the Spicy Stir-Fried Baby Octopus on Iron Plate/Jjukkumi Cheolpan Bokkeu/철판쭈꾸비볶음, for $30.99. I couldn't try the octopus, but the portion was plentiful, and I had a bit of the noodles on the bottom after making sure there were no tentacles, as well as trying the sauce. The sauce was tasty, spicy, and very flavorful. We went with two of the Korean BBQ meats, one beef and one pork. My preference of the two was surprisingly the $49.99 Charcoal Grilled Marinated Beef Ribs/Yangnyeom Galbi/양념갈비. This also came with two veggies: kabocha squash and asparagus. The beef was extremely tender, had the perfect mix of fat and meat, and had only a light sweetness from the marinade. This was absolutely delicious and very much worth the price point. Also tasty was the Grilled Pork Belly/Samgyeopsal/삼겹살, for $36.95. This also came with a few things, including cabbage and a large mushroom. The pork belly was delicious, being just fatty enough and very tender as well, with a mild chew. The BBQ came with a few extra side dishes. This included a tasty steamed egg/Gyeran-jjim/계란찜, greens, an onion salad, ssamjang, salt, and a small boiling pot of soybean stew/doenjang jjigae. They were all tasty, though nothing particularly notable outside of the portions being generous. Also, at the end of the meal, they gave us some sujeonggwa. Not much for me to complain about this place. The food was very tasty overall, and the service was wonderful. I would go back and order a full beef BBQ set.
