I got a Rou Gia Mo here and it was absolutely delicious! The chicken was on the spit, and we watched our server carve it out and season the meat. The bun was also so flaky and fresh, we definitely got lucky. The rou gia mo was so tasty. The chicken is tender and juicy. The bun crispy and pairs so well. Portion is generous for $6, and I loved it!

The rou jia mo, aka the Chinese hamburger, is often called the world's oldest hamburger. It's over 2,000 years old and originated from Xi'an, China. It's $6 for one at Gao Xiao Pa in Flushing, and this is the only spot in NYC that actually uses a vertical rotisserie to stuff these Chinese meat burgers. The flatbread is golden and crispy with lots of layers. The chicken is juicy, seasoned well, and not greasy. The pineapple is my favorite part, so juicy and sweet. The roujiamo is stuffed and made right in front of you for a satisfying snack/meal! Gao Xiao Pa 高小爬 (41-39 Kissena Blvd, Flushing, NY 11355) Open daily 7am-7pm

We came here around noon time and there wasn't a long line. I love the fact that they kept this here giving it an halal/Chinese flare. For $6 a sandwich you get so much! Even the pineapple added to the chicken sandwich was so good. I can eat this again, over the egg sandwich bear tea pulse. This place is 5/5 and need to grab it to go when you are in flushing 100%

This is a small side kiosk located on Kissena know for one of a kind sandwiches. The bun is flaky, buttery crisp and the meat filling is flavorful and can be tailored spicy to your taste level. There's also plenty of cabbage and onions. Prices are awesome and really can't be beat. Owners are super friendly. This is a hit in Flushing.

The second was better than the first. I didn't get the spicy the first time and it certainly didn't impress me as much as the second. The super flaky shell resembles phyllo dough but without the copious butter flavor. As a result, it lacks any really flavor and is purely a vessel to get the chicken thigh mix in your mouth. The chicken is really tender and seasoned well. If you can handle spicy, get it for sure. The onions were crunchy and powerful, maybe just a little too raw for my taste to be honest. Make sure you have some breath mints afterwards. The service was friendly, if you're not fluent in the language, pointing is valuable action to take to get what you want. Gas Xiao Pa is purely a street stall, there is no where to sit and eat.

We came here for a grab and go bite. Got the rou jia mo (chinese burger) It was okay, he served us cold bread and raw onions. We both didn't like it much. Not as good as my go to for roujiamo. My other friend who came here preciously said it wasn't as good as my go to as well, Old Luo Yang. Definitely looks cooler than it tastes being served from the vertical rotisserie. Probably wouldn't come back here. If the onions are cooked longer than maybe but not really interested in a mouthful of raw onions again. Small portion of meat and not seasoned enough. A bit disappointing for a first meal of the day.

I will say that my initial experience eating the roujiamo (Chinese Hamburger) from here was finding it very delicious. To be fair, I didn't eat much that day and just came from ice skating and walking. My hunger was stoked making this taste as good as possible to me. But after I reflected on what I just ate I realized that the onions in this were undercooked and the seasoning on a whole was fairly bland. Also there was no pineapple included with our order (Didn't realize we needed to ask for this). The bread was flaky and tender, but as a whole it was pretty disappointing after my expectations were set high from other rave reviews. Overall I prefer the traditional version found elsewhere, specifically with lamb and usually intensely spiced so that is where my allegiance lies. Would I eat this again? Sure, you paying? I probably wouldn't go back on my own.

He knew what we wanted (Roujiaomo) while we were waiting on line. We barely had to wait as he was continuously cooking! I love the crisp bun with the tender and flavorful chicken. I enjoyed the crunch of the onions and cabbage, but wish they were cooked a bit longer to get the rawness out. It was a sharp contrast to the rest of the flavors. Good price ($6) for a quick flavorful bite.

I'm going to be so real. I think about this Rou Jia Mo every other day and I almost cried from how good it was. From the flakiness of the bun to the well seasoned chicken to the little kick from the onion, everything was amazing. Thank you Mr. Rou Jia Mo chef guy. 那么好吃

Ate here today by myself trying this place out. I definitely tried and brought the rou jia mo that it was absolutely affordable ($6), delicious and amazing after watching the Lunar New Year's parade. The service there was also attentive and super fast. I couldn't agree more about it. Finally, I would definitely eat and come back again next time! :)

Gao Xiao Pa is a small stall in Flushing known for their rou jia mo. I think they have several other items, but I came here for their rou jia mo. I found it to be pretty cheap, and it's actually quite filling!

After my second visit, this time with three other friends, I have a firm opinion on this Chinese hamburger that people think is an Instagram revelation. OMG! Please! Yes, $6 for this snack is a good price. However, that's roughly the going rate for Chinese hamburgers all over Flushing. Traditional shops would serve the bread with braised pork or cumin lamb, and no fillers. Only difference is that they made a fusion product copying al pastor on a trompo with chicken instead, served with onion and lettuce. Let's talk about the chicken for a minute. Why is it not more flavorful, even with all the seasoning and spices added? Part of the reason is the man is pre-cutting the meat off the vertical spit and allowing it to sit there cooling down and drying out. Another is that the chicken is probably not brined. Too bad. This could have been much better. Btw, if you want a piece of pineapple, you'll have to ask. I'm personally not a fan of chicken and pineapple together, so I didn't bother. As for the bread, it's actually one of the best I have had in Flushing. Flaky and fluffy, whithout being crumbly and messy. They also serve it warm, so this was the best part of the sandwich. It's interesting to me that they combined a traditional Chinese item with a Mexican al pastor twist, but why not pork instead of chicken is still my biggest question. Then the pineapple makes sense. Look! It's not a bad product, just nothing really special. Honestly, the bread is excellent. I just wish the chicken was better to match.

I've walked by Gao Xiao Pa multiple times and keep telling myself I should try this one day. Today was that day! There were a few interesting menu items, but I decided only to get the Rou Jia Mo (Chinese Al pastor burger) since it's what they are known for. I was actually told to come back in 20min because they were actually out of the chicken and needed to prepare it again, which was fine with me because I would be getting a new batch. You can customize it by adding spice, onions, lettuce, and pineapple. The chicken is packed with flavor and the bun was very flaky. It was only $6 and they don't skimp on the filling. The owner understands English and was very nice.

Suadero is another not to be found commonly - it is one of the most delectable and succulent tacos which I've ever encountered. Red sauce has a really nice fresh strong heat. Green has a flavour which I cannot immediately discern amongst the glorious peppers... Buche. Who sells that at your local taqueria?! Again- not this side of the border. I had to look it up why lie? The Cebollitas are incredible. Bite into the bulb and suck out the meat - it's more like a leek. Sweet. Earthy. Delicious. Those are just the things which one normally does not see outside of Mexico. Or, at least in most NY Taquerias. All of the regulars are there, waiting, begging.... Go late. There's a definite Mexico City feel- between the cavorting, hookers, and constant noise. The various food smells, the little bit of English heard, brown bagging...and sometimes a bit of chaos. This ain't your safe and cushy NY- this is a piece of the underbelly. Even though this vendor sells tacos pequeño (small tacos, 2-3 bites), they are $3-4 each, which is not cheap. For that reason, I can't give them 5 stars. It's quite pricey considering that most full size tacos are selling for about $4.50-5.50 nowadays on the streets, but double in size. With that said, I appreciate the smaller size for me to enjoy more variety every time I stop by. My favorites change from visit to visit, but generally I always get Suadero (roast meat), Campechano (roast meat & sausage), Buche (pork stomach), Cabeza (beef head), and Lengua (beef tongue). I also like the extra weird parts like Cesos (beef brain) and Ojos (beef eye). However, the texture is very mushy and definitely not for everyone. As accompaniments, for every two tacos you order, they also give you a long stem onion that is quite tender and delicious. On the down side, instead of the traditional lime and radish that most places give, Tacos El Borrego offers lemon and cucumbers. I'm not sure why, except maybe they are cheaper options than the normal garnishes. Also, don't forget the flavorful green and red sauces on the table if you are eating there. Otherwise, ask for some to go. I miss the days when our group of friends would get a few tacos late at night after a party or night out drinking. The prices are no longer the same, but the food is still perfect for sobering up while having some laughs on the streets during the warm months. I think back to those days fondly whenever I'm at a taco stand nowadays, and Tacos El Botrego is one of my favorites in NYC.

Since then, I've tried a steak taco and the combination meats tlayuda, and both were delicious. The steak taco had juicy and well-seasoned meat, a flavorful tortilla, and amazing spicy sauce. The tlayuda was large enough for 2-3 people to share. In addition to the large base tortilla and bean spread, the combination variety had chorizo, steak, and seasoned pork (the best) for the meats, stringy Oaxacan cheese, tomato, and avocado. There were red and green salsas and escabeche pickles available for garnishes. I would have liked a little lime to add some sparkle to all of the savory flavors. There are 4 small stools and a covered table next to the cart to sit and eat, but I can't imagine it'd be a fun experience in bad weather. Definitely check this place out.

Instead, walk 10-15 minutes south on Kissena Blvd and you will find a group of street vendors gathering nightly on the sidewalk right in front of Gold City Supermarket. On a beautiful night, you'll find many people camping out on the ledge of the supermarket parking lot, or even putting out picnic blankets, while enjoying various street foods they can find at this great little "food fest". The street vendors are from different regions of China and serves all sorts of yummy goodies. You can find lots of fried items, soup noodles, grilled skewers, marinated meats and veggies, desserts, etc. One of my favorite stalls is the vendor selling hand torn shredded chicken ($25 each), which they dress up in seasoning and spices. They use an older chicken that has a firmer texture that won't fall apart when tearing the meat. The flavor is wonderful and absolutely addictive. They even give you a frequent buyer card that gets you a free chicken when you reached six purchases. The same stall also sells marinated items that are quite good. You are allowed to mix and match as long as they have the same price point. Another stall I would recommend is the stinky tofu stall. There are often more than one, but I like the one with the longest table space only dedicated to this single product, often in the middle of the block. If you have never tried this delicacy, close your nose and give it a go. You may be pleasantly surprised. Other stands that are popular include the BBQ grilled meats over charcoal, where you can get $2-3 skewers of lamb, beef, chicken wings, and whole lot more. Also, if you see the man grilling whole squids, his stuff is quite tasty too. Bottom line, it's a fun evening hanging out with your friends and snacking on various yummy bites. Be brave and try something new. Though there are few English signs, just order what looks good. Find a day with nice weather and check it out soon.
