Don't let Oceano's location fool you. You might not think you'd find a top-notch sushi restaurant nestled in a strip mall dominated by a sketchy-looking casino, but it's worth your while to visit this place if you love fresh, generous portions of sushi, well-presented and delicious. I came here for dinner, at about 7:30 or so on a weekend. The main dining room is small and intimate, maybe 15 or so tables, and probably about half full when we showed up. We were seated at a table off to the side. The lights are kept low and the music was some kind of instrumental electronic trance/house style and not too loud; unusual and actually pretty pleasant to listen to. It was pretty quiet and very easy to converse. We stuck with maki rolls and ordered several of them: cucumber, tuna, the "Fuego Roll" (spicy tuna with green onions and tobiko), the "Boycott Roll" (yellowtail with scallions and tobiko), and, on the server's recommendation, the "Lava Roll" (salmon, tuna, cucumber, and imitation crab drizzled with spicy sauces). We also ordered a spam musubi. The wait was not very long, and we were so impressed with the presentation. The sushi was presented in a classic "boat," with tiny cups carved out of cucumbers for the ginger and wasabi. There was a flower on it, and the rolls were beautifully arranged. Oceano clearly puts a ton of time and effort into presentation, and they deserve recognition for this, because it makes your mouth water as soon as they set it down in front of you. The maki were significantly larger than we've seen at almost all other sushi restaurants in this area, and I think that's a big selling point of Oceano. The taste of all the rolls was awesome. Fresh, with crunchy veggies and beautiful fish. I would hesitate to recommend anything specific because they were all so delicious, but my favorites were probably the Fuego and the Boycott rolls. The spam musubi was also delicious -- it's made maki style rather than nigiri style like you might find in Hawaii, but just as tasty. The service was excellent; our drinks were consistently refilled before we had even finished them, and we never had to wait long to flag down the server for anything we needed. Prices are a little higher than some other sushi places around here, but Oceano's quality stands above any of them and the higher prices are fully worth it. read more

Today we went to this place with my husband and our baby. It was just a terrible experience to say right off the bat. We are very big connoisseurs of sushi and have been to so many sushi places. Why did I choose this restaurant? Because a lot of good reviews and beautifully decorated sushi and plate. But! The first thing that bothered me was the dishes. Plain white plates and bowls, not Japanese style at all. We ordered a lot of food. Namely: 3 miso soups, Blossom Roll, California deluxe roll, unagi nigiri 2, seared salmon nigiri 3, salmon nigiri, scallop nigiri 2. Everything was HORRIBLY oversalted and overcooked. Seared salmon nigiri was not seared but overcooked. It is not right. The rice was sooooo sour everywhere, we think too much vinegar was added. And the rice was not properly cooked and in general the rice was not for sushi. And, strangely enough, we were there for over an hour, and we were the only ones there. Our total check for everything was $130, crazy right? It was terribly not tasty and not high-quality fish. But this is not the end of my review. I noticed this restaurant several months ago but immediately put it out of mind because it's in a strip mall next to a casino, and frankly, that didn't sound like a great sushi experience to me. However, sushi cravings led me to Yelp one afternoon, and seeing good reviews had been left for Oceano since its opening, I decided to give it a try. The menu was not what I expected -- very heavy on non-traditional rolls, and there is shellfish on a significant portion of the menu. Nice if you love shrimp and crab... not so great if you're allergic to those things like I am. So, my choices were limited to a couple of rolls and the nigiri and sashimi options. The presentation of my order was very nice -- much better than I expected -- and the prices were reasonable (I did not try the all-you-can-eat special, which seems like a great option for those who can eat more of the items on the menu). I was happy with the service. As for the food itself, I was definitely not impressed. The fish smelled a little too, well, fishy, and the taste was just a bit off. Wait a second, did I go to the same place as everyone else on Yelp? How come my experience didn't match all the stars here?? I must have come on a bad day... I shouldn't say the whole experience was bad. Service was good, the restaurant was clean and nice (but very empty). I was greeted by a woman sitting down in the front which felt odd, like I was walking into an office building instead of a restaurant. I found my friend at the bar and noticed most of the staff just standing looking around. Apparently Saturday at lunch isn't a particularly busy time... We ordered the Pike's Peek Roll, the Godzilla roll, and I got two pieces of yellowtail nigiri. My friend got the tempura ice cream, and I was craving mochi ice cream so I ordered that. Pike's Peek: It said it was topped with krab salad but this doesn't resemble the krab salad that I'm used to. In fact, the texture was nowhere near as soft. It was quite strange. Inside was supposed to be spicy tuna and salmon, but it looked more like salmon skin. It was far too fishy tasting for my liking. Godzilla roll: Spicy salmon, red snapper, and yellow tail...this was good but the seaweed on it seemed kind of chewy. I'm not sure if it was a result of deep frying, but I've never experienced that with deep fried rolls before. Yellowtail nigiri: looked a little blemished, it wasn't bad. I don't know the details of how the tempura ice cream was but the mochi ice cream was very disappointing. Instead of the rice layer melting as I bit into it, it was very tough, chewy, and then crumbled after chewed. Yuck!! I tried to scoop the ice cream out of the inside, but ended up not finishing it. If you live in the area and your options are limited, it might be worth a shot. Fortunately, there are better spots closer to home for me. read more

Solid three stars here. We were visiting family in Seattle for the holidays, and decided to come here for dinner one night. They were very accommodating of our larger group (with kids), so that is a plus for them here. The food wasn't any to write home about, but it was solid. One thing to note is that it seems like they combine all orders onto one large boat for the table, so don't forget what you ordered unless you don't mind sharing. The one thing worth mentioning was that I ordered the "special nigiri" which was salmon with crab and jalapeno on top.
