We really enjoyed their more simple rolls-- the spicy tuna was outstanding. The suicide roll was also a surprise favorite, and actually had some decent spice! The firecracker roll was a bit of a letdown, it just wasn't anything special compared to some of their low-cost rolls. Not worth the upgrade in my opinion. Call this the month of new sushi discoveries! My friend just had surgery and was craving some vegan sushi, so I found this spot to grab some takeout for us to enjoy. They have a TON of veggie and vegan options, alongside the classic faves and some beef entrees. I am also gluten free, and they have gluten free options labeled clearly online. Tons of options for gluten free too! The takeout site was super easy, but I will say that it had different pricing depending on if you accessed it through their site, google, or a third party. The cheapest option (by a few dollars per roll) was to access pickup directly through their website. Glad I saw that and caught it before ordering. I got there right at the time of my pickup and the food was ready shortly after. They packaged the two veggie rolls in one box, and the two fish in another. She got the ACC roll which was basic and satisfying. She also loved the green dragon. I got spicy tuna which had a bit too much tuna for my taste, and I LOVED red dragon roll. The staff inside was quick and friendly. It looked like they were pretty busy, but managing the crowd well. The place wasn't too loud and seemed to have a great lunch vibe. While I usually get sushi for pickup to eat on the couch, I definitely would consider eating in person. read more

Sad to say to that I have never been treated so rudely before at any restaurant, particularly a Japanese restaurant. I had been a customer before and live in the area, so the place is well known to me. I came in to eat dinner with my young son on the late side Friday evening, and after walking in the door and waiting to be seated, an older lady (fiftyish to sixtyish) approached and immediately told me they had taken their last order and would not seat me. I checked my watch and I was surprised to see it was not closing time. There were still lots of people seated and eating. Clever way to lose customers. If this employee is too old and tired to work, send her home or cut her loose. This 40 year old waitress gave me quite a lot grief about my ID not being state issued because she couldn't see some holograph. She must have thought she was working in North Korea's TSA. I've been coming to Sushi Zen for 10 years, not exaggerating, and they always provide high quality, consistent, delicious food. The seafood is always fresh and flavorful; the Hawaiian poke is my absolute favorite, it's so flavorful and spicy but not overwhelmingly so. You can also get the poke don which is the poke served over sushi rice. Speaking of the rice it is always ON POINT! It's well seasoned and skillfully cooked; not just overcooked sticky rice. The chirashi is another favorite. Pretty much everything comes with miso and a salad, the dressing delicious. As for rolls, I love the Salmon Lemon roll the most, as well as the Crouching Tuna Hidden Shrimp. It's not a huge restaurant and the decor is clean and simple, but it's almost always busy. The lead sushi chef is an absolute delight with an elephant's memory! He recognizes me and my spouse every time we come in and asks after the other if one of us comes in alone. Looking for a good sushi place, I went onto Yelp to find one close to where we were vacationing. Sushi Zen came up with great ratings so my family and I decided to give it a try. We came in around dinner time and the place was already starting to fill up. Walking in it felt very cozy and it was nicely decorated. To the left you have the sushi bar that you can easily see your sushi being made. And to the right were the tables. We were seated immediately and looked at the menu right away. As far as the sushi goes, they gave you a piece of paper where you could designate what you want. And for the other dishes, you can order off the menu. They had everything from your typical sushi to chicken katsu to veggie croquettes with specials written out on their board. For starters we tried Tamago (sweet egg), Unagi (fresh water eel), and Veggie Croquette. All were delicious, but my favorite would have to be the Unagi. Next up our main course. I opted for the Spider Roll (deep fried soft shell crab, avocado, cucumber, tobiko, spicy mayo, and radish sprouts). My daughter got the kids meal "San" which came with tempura udon and 3 pieces of a California roll. My son being a non-sushi eater got the chicken katsu that was accompanied by miso soup and rice. I really liked my dish. The soft shell crab was crunchy and flavorful. My daughter enjoyed her kids meal as she had eaten nearly everything. My son was surprised by the size of his dish and could not finish half of it so of course he ended up having to box it up for leftovers. He said that it was okay. When I asked him why, he said because there was no katsu sauce with it, which is understandable. Now onto dessert....we got 3: Tempura Ice Cream, Tempura Brownie with Ice Cream, and Mochi Ice Cream (coffee flavor). They were hands down so delicious. The crunchy texture of both the brownie and the outer layer of the tempura was amazing. I would highly recommend. The coffee mochi ice cream was the same as others we have tried. We went to Sushi Zen for the first time yesterday and had a great experience! Staff is extremely friendly and attentive. The restaurant had a great, lively atmosphere. But, most importantly, the fish was so fresh! We got an order of the baked mussels, which were great! The crab on top really puts them miles above any other baked mussels we've had at other sushi spots. For our mains my husband ordered a shrimp tempura roll which had plenty of pieces to fill him up. I ended up with the sushi sashimi combo plate which came with 4 sashimi, 6 pieces of sushi, tempura, a California roll, gyoza and rice. It was way more than enough! For $25 you get a great assortment of items - perfect for someone who can't commit to just one thing haha. By the end of the meal, we spent about $80 with tip. This restaurant has been a favorite for a while now and I was relieved to find out they have a gluten free menu available. The GF menu clearly indicates which sauces are withheld for containing gluten. The hostess and server were knowledgeable about gluten free restrictions and immediately brought out tamari sauce to the table. Took my girl here to kick off her birthday week and she was in heaven! Sundays Sushi Zen is only open 5-9pm so we aimed to be 5 mins early and joined the little crowd that had gathered awaiting the door opening. Good thing because between some walk-ins and a few reservations the place was instantly full! We started off with an ice green tea and a white sangria. I was in the mood for hot green tea until I noticed the sangrias had sake in them. Of course they do! Very rude customer service. I'm a regular customer and have had the same takeout order in the past. Last night, one serving of my order was missing so I called Sushi Zen to request for my missing sushi. They made me argue with them for more than 20 mins, about my missing $12+ sushi, when I already paid close to $60 for my total takeout order. And the audacity to imply that I'm lying about my order. I have a few test items I try at all new-to-me Japanese restaurants: Chirashi, Nabeyaki Udon, Hamachi Kama/Saba Shio - and all are done really really well here. They even offer natto roll and ume-shiso, which is hard to come by in WA, so that was a pleasant surprise (and a giveaway that the chef was likely Japanese)! 4 star rating for service. 3 star rating for food. We were excited to eat at this place given the reviews and I'm sad to say we were disappointed in the quality of the fish. The chicken teriyaki was good, and bless our server for messing up the order (we asked for the bento box, but got the plate) and brought out the additional missing items free of charge. This is definitely a kid friendly restaurant and we did have a good time. The sashimi plate had very very small pieces of fish, with the hamachi being the smallest (almost looked like the scraps of the fish).
