Service is pretty good and ambience was all right. I like that they have a variety of rolls, but we absolutely loved their house salad. It was unique with the canned pineapple. It also had beets, avocado, and a really good miso vinaigrette. The California roll is pretty good. I did not like the spicy tuna. It was very fishy and it also wasn't spicy. The cucumber roll was delicious, but I'm kind of boring like that.

A local favorite for north end folks. Sushi is always fresh and presentation is good. Servers are friendly and attentive, and the chefs ensure the quality standards meet your expectations. Located in a strip mall across the parking lot from Sprouts Market.

Chirashi Sushi Hawaiian Style Tuna Poke

I've been coming to Sushi Zen for 10 years, not exaggerating, and they always provide high quality, consistent, delicious food. The seafood is always fresh and flavorful; the Hawaiian poke is my absolute favorite, it's so flavorful and spicy but not overwhelmingly so. You can also get the poke don which is the poke served over sushi rice. Speaking of the rice it is always ON POINT! It's well seasoned and skillfully cooked; not just overcooked sticky rice. The chirashi is another favorite. Pretty much everything comes with miso and a salad, the dressing delicious. As for rolls, I love the Salmon Lemon roll the most, as well as the Crouching Tuna Hidden Shrimp. It's not a huge restaurant and the decor is clean and simple, but it's almost always busy. The lead sushi chef is an absolute delight with an elephant's memory! He recognizes me and my spouse every time we come in and asks after the other if one of us comes in alone. And every farewell is, "see you tomorrow!"

3. "San" Kids Menu

Looking for a good sushi place, I went onto Yelp to find one close to where we were vacationing. Sushi Zen came up with great ratings so my family and I decided to give it a try. We came in around dinner time and the place was already starting to fill up. Walking in it felt very cozy and it was nicely decorated. To the left you have the sushi bar that you can easily see your sushi being made. And to the right were the tables. We were seated immediately and looked at the menu right away. As far as the sushi goes, they gave you a piece of paper where you could designate what you want. And for the other dishes, you can order off the menu. They had everything from your typical sushi to chicken katsu to veggie croquettes with specials written out on their board. For starters we tried Tamago (sweet egg), Unagi (fresh water eel), and Veggie Croquette. All were delicious, but my favorite would have to be the Unagi. Next up our main course. I opted for the Spider Roll (deep fried soft shell crab, avocado, cucumber, tobiko, spicy mayo, and radish sprouts). My daughter got the kids meal "San" which came with tempura udon and 3 pieces of a California roll. My son being a non-sushi eater got the chicken katsu that was accompanied by miso soup and rice. I really liked my dish. The soft shell crab was crunchy and flavorful. My daughter enjoyed her kids meal as she had eaten nearly everything. My son was surprised by the size of his dish and could not finish half of it so of course he ended up having to box it up for leftovers. He said that it was okay. When I asked him why, he said because there was no katsu sauce with it, which is understandable. Now onto dessert....we got 3: Tempura Ice Cream, Tempura Brownie with Ice Cream, and Mochi Ice Cream (coffee flavor). They were hands down so delicious. The crunchy texture of both the brownie and the outer layer of the tempura was amazing. I would highly recommend. The coffee mochi ice cream was the same as others we have tried. I would certainly want to come back and try out their lunch specials.

Great spot for sushi, wonderful service. *Dear Yelp, here are a few more sentences for the people who enjoy reading reviews rather than getting outside & experiencing what this world has to offer. Remember what life was like before yelp? We just went places 'cause they looked cool, tried restaurants 'cause they looked nice or someone recommended it... but now, most of us go on Yelp. Why? To read novel length reviews from wannabe journalists? Or are you like me: I just want to look at the menu before hand, check out the prices, & know if I'll get food poisoning or not. Either way, you read this long rant, thanks, I hope I made you laugh

We stopped in here with friends on a weekday for dinner. They open at 5 PM, we got there a few min before 5 PM, and there were several ppl waiting outside already. We were a table of 7, and got seated right away. They do not have happy hour here anymore. We were all very happy with all the sushi we ordered, from the rolls, to the sashimi, everyone in the group enjoyed the food. Prices were typical. Overall, still a good experience getting sushi here.

We went to Sushi Zen for the first time yesterday and had a great experience! Staff is extremely friendly and attentive. The restaurant had a great, lively atmosphere. But, most importantly, the fish was so fresh! We got an order of the baked mussels, which were great! The crab on top really puts them miles above any other baked mussels we've had at other sushi spots. For our mains my husband ordered a shrimp tempura roll which had plenty of pieces to fill him up. I ended up with the sushi sashimi combo plate which came with 4 sashimi, 6 pieces of sushi, tempura, a California roll, gyoza and rice. It was way more than enough! For $25 you get a great assortment of items - perfect for someone who can't commit to just one thing haha. By the end of the meal, we spent about $80 with tip. It was a little more on the expensive side, but for the quality we'll certainly be back next time we're in the area!

Poke-Don
Jule G.

Service and food are both great. My only minus is that the restaurant is all open space so the kitchen cooking smell permeates the entire restaurant. Poke-don is delicious every time. It's on the spicy side, so people who normally order 1-2 stars might find it too much.

I enjoyed the sauce they added for the rice. The sushi costed $26 but I could only eat half of it! So definitely shareable. The service was okay. Unfortunately it's only takeout. The food was surprisingly quick to be made. It only took 10 mins for me, but all the other times it took about 40 mins for it to be made. The ambiance of the takeout is eh. Very small and not too decorated.

It was too much of one thing. I love salmon and wished there was a salmon variety box or something. It was either this or the raw salmon option. If they had any other options, they were out or it was not listed on their kiosk menu. After eating two pieces, and my husband ate one, We had enough. I think it was about $28-30 for this. Not enough wasabi/Ginger for as thick as this was to help cut the single taste. We got tired of this real quick. You enter and order at the kiosk. Had no way of knowing the wait time due to seeing no one around. Most ppl sat in their car and waited. I think it took about 15-20 mins for my text letting me know the order was ready. Must keep your receipt to show the lady so she can hand over the order. Which is a good thing. Unfortunately this was just not for us. But I can see the hype tho. And then I can see the 3.5 rating. Hahaha

The place was absolutely empty when we got there around 6:30 on a Friday. This made us feel a bit uneasy but maybe it was just a slow night. There was only one other table that came in during the time we were there. The place is in a strip mall and doesn't feel like the best area. It was a bit dingy inside but seemed clean. The waitress was nice and quickly came over to get our drink order. The menu is online via a QR code so make sure you have your phone handy. We ordered a few special rolls and some regular rolls. The food took a little while to come out despite the place being empty. The sushi was fine but nothing special. The El Diablo roll was probably my favorite and packed a decent amount of heat. The rest of the rolls tasted pretty good but I didn't love the bigger pieces of cucumber in them. On the plus side, the prices were pretty reasonable.

Fish texture is that grainy, mushy kind. I'm not expecting Japan level sushi, but for the prices that you're paying per roll, you'd expect a little better. Atmosphere is fine, tables are a little sticky (you know what I'm talking about). Food presentation is good though, staff are hit or miss. Go here with expectations, then you may find this place okay to fix your sushi craving.
