We went in before the dinner rush on a Saturday afternoon and ordered at the bar. The guy who gave us menus and took our food order was friendly and welcoming. As soon as it started to pick up, though, service suffered. Our food came out stone cold; and the fries, especially, were dead. The server or food runner who ran our food had zero interest in whether we needed anything else. We were hoping to ask for water, but she was off to attend to other obviously annoying tasks even before the plates hit the table. This is usually the moment to nip issues-like cold food-in the bud, but unfortunately, this is the second time I've spent too much money for meh food and even meh-er service. read more

Okay, I love the Oak. It's quickly becoming one of my go-to places to share with people who come to my 'hood. There's something for everyone - craft beer for the beer-drinkers, cocktails for the hard-alcohol lovers, burgers for the meatheads, & a ton of vegan options for the herbivores. I have to be honest, though; I've probably had the grilled cheese most times I've been here. It's delicious, as are the fries, and it's always piping hot. Honest to god, this place has perfected the burger. Get the Stumptown, never look back - don't worry, no need to thank me, your tastebuds will do it for you. I love that the servers know "my usual" and I'm pretty sure this place is the closest I will ever get to living on Cheers. And yes, since I've tried almost everything on the menu - here's some tips. Their salads are bomb. If you're thinking about it, get one. Their dessert crumbles are better than your favorite boozy beverage. Their happy hour Shepard's Hand Pies are the sole reason why I sometimes wait to eat dinner until 10 o'clock at night. I'm a fried chicken fanatic, and their fried chicken can be a little dry. Look elsewhere if that's what your craving. But, if you want the perfect hearty burger patty, a delicious over medium egg, bacon, greens, sauce that drips down your fingers like you're the hottie in a Carl's Jr commercial, and a bun that can stand up to the challenge - go to the Oak, get the Stumptown, and swear yourself off all other burgers forever and always, amen. read more

We had the fried chicken sandwich and the vegan fishwich and they were both amazing. The fried chicken was thigh meat (yes!!!) and the slaw on the fishwich was to die for. Came in here after hauling crab pots looking for a fat burger and was not disappointed! They have a sort of build-your-own burger menu, with different base burgers and add ons like fried egg, bacon, fancy cheeses and mushrooms, I think I even saw peanut butter but I can't speak to that. Burger was good and the house sauce was better (CBGB?) but the BRUSSELS SPROUTS. The sprouts were out of this world, crispy with a maple balsamic reduction and done just right. Kitschy hipster 70's cabin feel that somehow worked. I'll be back to try the alcoholic kombucha cocktails! read more

Love this neighborhood joint which I frequent often. The burgers and fried chicken sandwich are juicy if a tad greasy, the service is friendly, and the atmosphere is jovial and laid back. Plenty of vegan options including weekly specials. It's a notch up from your average pub food, with some American comfort food meals that hit the spot. Portions are generous, drinks options are plentiful. The bathroom wallpaper is awesome! My only criticism is that sometimes the music is too loud for my old ears to handle, and it makes people yell-talk which brings the noise level up even a few more octaves. read more

Ordered an appetizer and burgers for the three of us. 30 minutes later waiter says the food should be out shortly. Another hour passes and the table next to us that arrived after us got all of their food, and yet not a word from the (same) waiter about ours. After an hour and a half of sitting and waiting we had to walk out without dinner to make our next appointment. It should not take an hour and a half to get a blooming onion, but even worse, no update except for "should be soon"? Uhm...This bar is AWESOME! I feel silly because I was here a few weeks back and am only now writing a review. Let me explain the many reasons you will love this bar. One - it's among one of only two or three places in Beacon Hill that are actually open past 10pm. Two - It's adorable! The decor is cute, it's homey, it's friendly, it's casual. Perfect for Seattle. Three - The drink menu is crazy affordable and perfect whether you're drinking, you're not, whether you want cheap beer, local beer, fancy beer or of course, a cocktail. Four - The food is AWESOME! I couldn't actually decide what to eat so I ordered a Caprese salad and a massive burger. There was no way I could finish either dish but I had to get them because they sounded so good. And so did the rest of the menu, actually. The french fries were also great. I highly recommend anything on the menu. Whether it's a small plate, dinner, apps, shared food, etc. So yes... get here ASAP. It's adorable, there's room for large groups, small groups or even just a seat at the bar. The service was super friendly and the entire place feels like it has been there forever. Such a welcome addition to Beacon Hill! read more

After a nice evening at this bar (4 or 5 star worthy), we got the check. The waitress/bartender brought us our bill and said "you guys look fun, I want to take a shot with you." So we said ok and answered her follow up question "what do you want to drink?" with "whiskey." So she brings us out 7 shots (there were 7 of us), but since the reason why we were taking these shots was because of her you guys look fun, I want to take a shot with you" we took an empty glass and poured out an additional shot from the 7. We then all proceed to take the shot (some nasty well whiskey, but what the hell- beggars can't be choosers) and the waitress asks "alright, who is going to pay for the shots?" Baffled, one of us gave her an additional credit card (we already had a couple down to pay our bill). Much like our waitress, hindsight is a bitch- should have never agreed to pay for those shots! Tricking people in to buying shots?!?!? On top of that, we were in the process of paying our existing bill. Shady business, left a very sour taste in our mouths (or maybe that was just the disgusting well whiskey we got tricked in to drinking and paying for.) read more

The Oak is a swank little neighborhood tavern and a great addition to Beacon Hill! Rustic Americana settings greet you as you enter the cozy surroundings. They have a dining/family area in the lower end of the restaurant and an upper bar with a sports bar type lounge. I've tried a couple of their dinners, the double bacon cheeseburger nicknamed "overtime" with an arugula salad was killer, and the painted hills beef sloppy joe with fried egg on top and frites was interesting. As a fan of interesting micros, they had a Irish Death ale by Iron Horse and a double barrel ale on tap. The missus had one of their delicious ciders. If you're a coffee fan, they have brewed Verite coffee and bags of beans to go. read more

Double check your card charges! After sitting at the bar on a busy Friday night recently I got the bill. It was $39 and change, which is what I expected. I used my debit card to pay, and left a CASH tip of $6. I even drew a line through the "tip" area on my slip, and brought the $39 amount down for the total, and signed it. I made sure to hand the tip and the signed form to my server, even waiting to get her attention. I always do that when I'm leaving cash. Then, low and behold a few days later my card was charged for exactly $5 MORE than the $39 and change. There are a few conclusions I could draw here as to why this happened, none of them good. I know it's only $5, but it's still stealing. I left a voice message yesterday, but of course have received no call back (as basically promised in their answering machine message). We went here for dinner tonight and it was a cool place! I liked the vibe and the space a lot. I wish they had a website or posted their menu online so I wasn't going in completely unprepared. Their menu consists mainly of sandwiches with a few other options, but clearly the sandwiches are their main focus. I had the grilled cheese sandwich with a side of fries. The sandwich was OK. It was very different from a normal grilled cheese, and not really in the best way. It wasn't bad, but just not great either. The fries were really tasty though. My husband had the minimum wage burger and he LOVED it! Said it is one of the favorite burgers he has had in Seattle. Bummer I don't eat burgers lol. So, overall, not bad. Pretty good. read more

I wanted to love this place, I had pretty good food on our first visit and have been wanting to go back ever since. Unfortunately on our second visit it was such a bad experience that I'm pretty sure we're not going back again. We got to the restaurant ahead of the rest of our party and I ordered a grilled cheese for my kid, knowing that she was going to be hungry well before the rest of us were ready for dinner. After a short while the rest of our party arrived and we placed the rest of our order. 20 minutes passed...then 30... I checked in with the waitress about the grilled cheese and it appeared that she had not even put in the order. So she rushed to go put the order in. The majority of our order came in...of course the grilled cheese was still missing. After (waiting ~45 minutes for our food) we had all finished, our plates were cleared and we were pretty much ready to go my kids food came! And to add insult to injury, we were still charged for the sandwich. So after a 2 hour dinner, having to go order beers at the bar instead of waiting for the waitress to take our drink orders, and waiting an incredibly long time for our food, it's unlikely that we're going make it back to oak. read more

The Oak is my new second favorite place to stuff my face as of late. So far I've only sat at the corner table just inside the door but I love this table more than I love your mom. It's surrounded by windows so I can people watch (read that 'people judge') and enjoy the sunshine (assuming it's not raining cats and dogs). Every employee I've encountered thus far has been cool and friendly. That's all I ask and I don't feel it's asking too much. I dig that they put down water glasses and a glass bottle of water for the table. If you want water you can have it but if you don't it leaves more for me... but, really, you should drink more water. Another plus for me, as a non booze drinker, is they have ginger beer which is the tastier version of ginger ale. Sometimes I want to drink something other than water or in addition to water and ginger ale is just a bit... weak sauce. The burgers here are awesome! AWESOME! I straight up go T Rex on them and just stick my face into them and snuffle them up like a deranged anteater. Two 1/3 slabs of beef, cheddar cheese, bacon, green chili peppers and a fried egg on a pretty tasty bun makes for one hell of a burger. They do offer a good selection of cheese too so you can switch things up if you want. And, as if things could get any better, they have awesome fries! Seasoned perfectly so you can eat them with or without dipping sauces and just the right amount of crispy. They aren't those floppy greasy fries that you can use like Indiana Jones' whip but rather a fry that holds a bit of form while still being quite easy to cram a handful into your mouf. I'm expecting my check-ins here to soar over the coming weeks. I'm a huge fan! read more

Came here for lunch and a beer. Gabbed a seat in the bar because that's just our preference. After asking for menus we waited very patiently for the bartender to take our order (you have to order at the bar rather than them come to your table). When he finally came over to us, instead of asking for our order he said "you know we have table service downstairs, or is that not what you were trying to do". After telling him it wasn't he then told us "well I have a couple things to do, so...." Then walked away. We stood there shocked for a minute then wondered if we should go downstairs. We ended up just leaving because of how embarrassed and disrespected we felt. We understand how busy bartenders can get, but there were so many other ways to handle it. Lost a few regular customers today... In response to the comment left by the restaurant: we didn't want table service. We walked up to the bar to try and order. If you don't offer food service in the bar, why didn't he say that when he handed us food menus? This isn't a case of miscommunication. He was rude. Period. read more

If I lived nearby I would probably tolerate the bull$h1t and stop by - but if this isn't a local haunt for you I wouldn't recommend it. We had such a bizarre experience with the service from beginning to end. The bartender seemed friendly but our waitress acted like she was in prison the whole time. She walked by at least 5 times, a good 15 minutes before acknowledging us and taking our orders. Despite her glare we tried our best to exchange pleasantries. When we asked how she was doing, she rolled her eyes and said "I'm really hot, to be honest." And then stared at us blankly, never smiling. Welllllll ok! Sorry? The bartender brought us the wrong drinks. The dark and stormy we ordered was so bad we didn't drink it but no one ever noticed or asked us about it, even though it sat untouched for an hour + After getting the wrong drinks, we got our food with the wrong sides. Our waitress noticed but we were absolutely starving at that point and declined waiting for the right sides to be made. It was sad that nothing further was done about all the wrongness - I don't think they really cared all that much. But at the end of the day, our food was really good!!! The kitchen is firing on all cylinders. We got a decked out burger and a veggie burger and they were both great. We each loved our food even with them both being so different. So overall the food is good! The mixed drinks and the service were absolutely horrible. Inexcusable. If I were in the area again I'd go, but I wouldn't go out of my way for this place and I would encourage the owners to get better servers. read more

Beacon Hill is definitely up and coming, and places like the Oak are great additions to the neighborhood. The place is chill and has a great vibe. There is a smaller bar in the back, which is a great place to spend a few hours in a dark yet inviting space. While the draft beer selection isn't huge, it's well-chosen. There is a good selection of booze as well, and a bar menu that is surprisingly good. The minimum wage burger was one of the tastiest and juiciest burgers that I have had in a while - smaller in size but a little thicker than your average burger. Served with either salad or fries, it makes for a perfect bar meal. The Oak may be small in size and offerings, but with high quality and friendly service, it's a great place for hipsters and normal folks alike. read more

The Oak. *sighs lovingly* It my first year wedding anniversary and spa time in SODO was scheduled to celebrate. Being that I love food and an anniversary warranted not only spa time but grub to boot I did was seeking a place near SODO with vegan options. A Yelp search in Beacon Hill led me the way to The Oak and I am forever grateful. The Oak's name tells you what to expect interior wise. The place is all wood reminiscent of a cabin that was built centuries ago. The restaurant is in the front with additional seating to the left as you walk in. Continue straight and you are in the bar. It is small so this would not be the best place for groups. Old paintings and license plates line the walls. The food is solid. So solid I've been there multiple times. Plenty of vegan options which I adore. Vegan burgers, sandwiches, soups, sushi. The first time visiting I had the vegan sushi rolls for happy hour. Very fresh and filling. My husband had a cup of soup. The second time there I got the vegan Hawaiian burger which was fabulous. Vegan patty, vegan bacon, and a pineapple ring piled high with fries as a side. You can not go wrong with that option! That time my husband had the Shepard's pie and he was less than impressed with it. I would give The Oak 4 stars but rated it 3 because of the prices. The Oak's happy hour prices can't be beat but outside happy hour is another story. Yeah, I may be cheap, I ain't gonna lie but I did cringe when I saw the vegan Hawaiian burger was $14. Regardless, I still love this place. I will come back but not at the end of the month when I am broke as a joke. read more

I was really disappointed in the food here. As a bar, it's a fun place - so I'm giving it three stars. As for the actual bar food - all I can say is "bland." I had the vegan chili - and while it looked like it would be delicious - it was seriously lacking flavor, and it's not b/c it was vegan! It had some spice to it, but it still was missing some real flavor. Additionally, the two crackers that come with it were an unsatisfying combination. Give me some cornbread or a roll. My friends and I also ordered the green salad. Ok, perhaps this is our own fault but for $4.95 - the green salad is JUST THAT. A small handful of spring lettuce mix with some dressing. No tomatoes, no carrots, no extras. A HUGE ripoff. My friend ordered the penne - and it also was very bland. However, my other friend ordered the minimum wage burger and she was quite happy with it. The balsamic reduction on top tasted like it belonged on a pancake or French toast. If you're looking for a nice, intimate place to eat and hang out without being overpriced, or pretentious, this is it. The decor is simple and clean. Walls appear to be reclaimed wood, which adds to the laid back atmosphere. The adult drinks are tasty, and well made with adequate amounts of alcohol. They carry Coke products thankfully, and no RC despite being a "hipster-esque" establishment. Food was ample, well prepared, and plated very well. The are on the larger portion side though. I highly suggest the Penne and Cheese. Our waitress was tatted up with seafoam green hair, and absolutely delightful. I can't say one bad thing about this place. I wish I lived closer. Given that this place is just a few blocks from my house, I have no excuse for how long it took me to try it out. Dropped by with my 9-year old for an early dinner on a warm Saturday afternoon. The dining area was empty when we arrived at 4:30 but was filling up when we left an hour later. My son had the Minimum Wage burger, which was huge - he ate half and brought the rest home. The frites were also excellent - freshly cut and cooked. I had the caprese and the balsamic side salad. Both had a little too much vinegar for my taste, but overall were quite good. Charging for sauces is pretty petty. I don't like seeing surprise $.50 charges on my bill, but I also didn't need as much sauce as I was given. How about give me a ramekin half that size and call it good? And don't come back at me and say that complaining about it is what's petty. I called you it first! We can't both be Petty. But if I'm Petty, then you're the Heartbreakers. Either way it means you're a little overrated. The atmosphere of the place is alright, pretty cozy. The beer choices are great. I would come for drinks anytime. Food was a mediocre experience. They have excellent fries, but their burger was dry (both bun and meat). And the prices are a teensy bit steep. Slightly above fair market price, I would say. Food service is a little slow too. I also don't get why their happy hour food is basically just pot pies. Who wants that? I get that you want to have your own thing, and I get that some people like pot pies, but maybe some regular pub snacks would be well received too. read more

Sadly, we will never give this establishment our business again and highly recommend you avoid it as well. I say sadly because it is a really cool space, and the person that greeted us as we walked in was very kind. It went downhill from there. As we walked up to the back bar, we witnessed the worst anti-Asian racism I've ever witnessed. The bartender grilled a young group of Asian men about where they were standing at the bar, who was paying the bill, and how the order was being split. It was rude at a level I've never seen. Then it was my turn. I was standing two feet away and he told me, "if you want to order, I'm right here." The bar was empty, and I was literally two feet away. He then asked if I wanted to start a tab, which I responded with, "no thank you." Then he asked if I wanted to pay cash, again, "no thank you." Then he yelled, "HOW DO YOU WANT TO HANDLE THIS?" I politely responded that I would like to pay with a card. I then asked why the gin and tonic was yellow, and he said, "this is more complex than Seagrams." I bartended and served for 5 years and sympathize with the service industry as much as anyone. I have never been treated like this in my 26 years of patronizing bars. I think it is easy to get caught up in the pettiness of a situation like this, but I turn to self-reflection. If ever in my career, I have ever been in a bad mood and treated a customer with such disrespect, I sincerely apologize. Sorry but on a not-so-busy Friday night we were sat promptly but the service was pretty awful. Coming from 2 people who have worked in restaurants all over the country, the server was really inattentive and preoccupied. I know people have bad days but this was a bit extreme. I really think a 3.5 star rating is appropriate, but I had a great time here with some friends trying out different burger combinations, so four stars it is! The build-your-own burger idea is pretty solid, and though it ends up being a little more expensive than I think is warranted (hence the 3.5 star rating), the ingredients are pretty good. Only complaint was that the burger patty was a little small...could have done with a little more beef. But it was cooked decently with a little pink in the middle, and the taste was not overwhelmed by the other burger ingredients. In fact, it was so good at first bite that I forgot to put the tomato, onions, and other veggies on the burger (they're served to the side). I had a heaping stack of fries (good quality) and a quarter-spear of pickle on the plate as well. Very tasty. My waiter recommended a ginger beer to wash everything down with, which proved to be a most tasty choice for someone planning to drive immediately after dinner. Total after tax and tip = $20. Visited this place for the first time yesterday afternoon around 5pm . Was greeted at the door by a really nice dude who also got us seated . Ordered the burger which was great ( kinda reminded me of a much much nicer Burger King for lack of a better game example which is a good thing) my friend ordered the chicken pot pie which I had a few bites of which was also delicious. The menu is very simple with cool vegan options but they have everything dialed in I definitely wanna try some other items ! Our server was amazing she was super nice and attentive! We have been to Oak twice and really like it. The first time we went was for a drink. We started and ended our evening there. They have a good selection of beer (not overwhelmingly big) and mixed drinks. The second time was for a quick dinner. I had the fried chicken sandwich. This is actually a large sandwich. It was two big chicken thighs between the buns. I ate one piece and used the other for the sandwich which was perfect. It came with a very large plate of tasty fries. It would be a great split if you shared a salad. My wife got the chicken pot pie. If was alright. She loved her cocktail, she described it as a spicy-sweet margarita. I like Oak because it feels like a dive bar, but still maintains a bit of a family and neighborhood feel. read more
