My family and I went here about 2weeks ago. We took our kiddos thrifting and then the hanger set in. It's hard to find something everyone agrees on but this place had a little of everything. we got there and they were in that weird in between time from end of lunch/happy hour, so the kitchen was closed. It was about a 30ish min wait but we were determined. It was a fabulously sunny day, people sitting outside so we decided to hang out and have a drink while we waited for the kitchen to open. So glad we stuck around because this place is AMAZING. The corn fritters our wonderful server recommended them and I could kiss him. They were so good. The oak salad was light and fresh, perfect for the day. Burger and fries were super hot and yummy. Lastly, the server was so great with our 2 girls. (Wish I would have gotten his name) He let them sit outside at their own little table and they chatted with the other patrons. (There was a couple with their dog sitting outside). My niece is very sociable and friendly and it was just a great vibe all around. This is a great neighborhood gem. She actually asked to go back this weekend. We will def be back. We decided to try Oak in Beacon Hill area of Seattle for dinner. We arrived about 6pm and were greeted and seated immediately inside. The restaurant was about half full when we arrived but was packed by 7pm when they have trivia game night on Monday evenings. The menu has many vegan and vegetarian options as it was originally a vegan restaurant. One of us ordered the bacon cheeseburger with vegan cheese and three ordered Banh Mi Salad, which was a dinner special. Two selected the grilled chicken as protein and one selected the grilled tofu. The burger was juicy and delicious. The salads were excellent. One of the best salads I have had, unique. The marinaded chicken was grilled perfectly. The pickled vegetables were an excellent acid complement for the salad with sesame dressing. Definitely a local favorite. Enjoyed the relaxed vibe of the restaurant. Came in at 12:40, didn't get our food until 2pm. Unfortunately, not an exaggeration since everyone in our party commented on it and checked the time. They apologized a few times but that was about it, the restaurant wasn't super busy/crowded since 50% of tables were empty (maybe they had a huge catering event or lots of takeout orders?). Food wise, wasn't super impressed either- not to warrant waiting that long. Ordered the vegan biscuit (hard) and smothered it in jam and vegan butter, sausage (super salty), sautéd kale (bland) and whipped coffee (good and super sweet). Fellow diners had:chimichuri chicken sandwich, grilled cheese plus sandwich, lots of burgers, a chicken wrap. Everyone seemed very pleased with their meals. Another diner & I ordered the chicken pot pie. By definition there is pastry, chicken, veggies & a SAUCE/GRAVY. The phyllo pastry top was great, veggies were ok. However, where's the sauce/gravy? There wasn't any. Tasted like mashed potato mixed with thyme flavored chicken. Plenty of tasty chicken. But the lack of sauce. My husband ordered a burger said, "it looks dry where's the sauce?" My fellow diner had said the same. Why 4 stars? The cocktail was good, everyone else really liked their meals. We were extremely disappointed by the lack of customer service and the professionalism. We waited over an hour for a Mediterranean salad to come out. When we finally asked about it, after waiting and being told that it was coming, it then showed up, messily tossed together. The other two meals that came out were presented nicely, while this one lacked care. We understood that we were sitting in the bar area, but that doesn't warrant a complete lack of care or checking in the entire time that we sat in the restaurant. It felt as though, at times, we were begging for attention that, as patrons, we deserved. On top of waiting for our food to come out, customers around us were getting served their meals that had been seated after us. We were told that they had a long night and were busy, but that, to me isn't an excuse to ignore paying customers and haphazardly serve them food that is far below the price charged. We then were able to get the one meal comped, but not without leaving feeling dismissed and as though we were asking for too much for some good service. On top of this, we had to wait an additional 20 minutes for boxes and to follow through with the comped Mediterranean salad. We ended up being told to chill- because of personal circumstances that the bartender decided to involve in the situation. We were in the restaurant around an hour and a half, and spent most of that time, waiting, not eating. It also didn't help that, in visiting this new restaurant, we were seemingly the only table that included black women. Overall poor experience and poor restaurant management, at a price that doesn't reflect that. Highly recommend going somewhere else if you are looking to enjoy a good meal. read more

I was really feeling a burger so I got the minimum wage burger, and I feel like calling it that might be making some sort of statement that's going right over my head but over $20 felt like a looooot to pay for a burger and fries to me. very cute and casual place on a busy strip in Beacon Hill. Some outdoor picnic tables and lots of indoor seating. Met four friends there (so there were six of us), and they found us a booth-table combination to accommodate us all sitting together; they were also able to bring a high chair for a young toddler in our group. Food came out reasonably quickly given how many of us there were. I got the vegan Southwest salad, and it was good but I was pretty disappointed in it for the price point. It was $20 and included a small-medium amount of tofu slices, some cherry tomatoes, corn, vegan cheese, and lettuce. No red onions were included as listed in the description, and they were out of vegan ranch so I did the balsamic vinaigrette. It was just a pretty lackluster, small-portioned salad for being $20. That said, I did think the tofu was well done, and the lettuce was good quality. I also really appreciate how many vegan options - including dessert - they offer, and that the labeling for allergens was very clear. My partner got the vegan Bahn mi and said it was decent but wished it was bigger. TLDR: cute ambiance, great labeling and offerings for vegan folks and decent for GF folks, pricey for the quantity, and good happy hour. Oak was a pleasant surprise. We live in the area and have passed by the restaurant so many times, but finally decided to stop in for dinner. The food was great. We shared the creamed sweet corn nuggets, curried chickpeas, and spicy fried chicken kale Caesar salad. Everything was flavorful. My fiancée is from the south and hasn't had corn nuggets in years. She said these brought her back to the ones her grandmother would make when she was a kid! The chicken on the salad was crispy and tender. The chimichurri on the chickpeas balanced the curry flavor nicely. The portions were shareable, especially the salad which was LARGE! Service was fantastic. Super good boneless fried chicken. However, this would have been even better with some sauce! I tried my friend's mushroom gravy and that would have been perfect for this. Although, there was honey that came on the dish. But I do like me some gravy!! Cornbread had a savory addition like green chile or something in the batter? The food was okay, which is the readon for my 3-star rating. Our table had some appetizers (fried green beans and brussel sprouts), and burgers. The brussel sprouts had good flavors and high potential, but lots of loose leaves that were deep fried to oblivion. The beans were...fine and the batter held onto the beans which is impressive, but lacking in flavor. The burgers were fine- the bottom bun was a soggy mess for all three of us, and it was a generously portioned plate, but the flavors weren't all that memorable. The best way for me to describe the food is "filling but not satisfying", which is not how we like to eat out. I think it's a perfectly fine place for a meet up with friends or family outing where you might care more about being in a cozy environment to spend time with the people you care about- the type of gathering where you might not necessarily notice or care about exactly how your burger was cooked. read more

A fried chicken kale Caesar salad worth risking food poisoning for - HEAR ME OUT I came to Oak with no expectations, and decided on the fried chicken Caesar salad (spicy) after perusing the menu several times. "Spicy?" YES. The delicious monstrosity that came out was a worthy foe (but we were on that "enemies to lovers" track) - heaps of kale, dressed to perfection, with swaths of grated Parmesan, topped with the loveliest looking protein I've ever seen on a salad. What I *WAS NOT* expecting, was how amazing the chicken itself, was - the "spicy" chicken is decidedly Nashville hot chicken-esque, and had the perfect balance of heat and flavor. I also don't generally get excited about kale, but it just...worked? ANYWAY; back to the point - I couldn't finish nearly half of the salad before I had to take a pause, and asked for a to-go container. After taking a lengthy walk to reevaluate my life decisions, AND a drive home, it had passed the sacred "2-hour mark", which is something I generally treat as gospel. A few years back I had the worst dining experience of my life at OAK! The food was beyond awful. My brother's hamburger was the size of a MacDonald's burger, charred black on both sides and no more than than four inches in diameter. My barbecued chicken sandwich was all fat, and my green salad was swimming in oil, no vinegar. It was so bad one would think it was done deliberately, and perhaps it was? In retrospect, I wonder if just butchering our food was all they did, it leaves a lot to the imagination. A very cheerful young waitress took our order, but it was, I'll call her Marah, that delivered it to our table, and she didn't just set it down and say, "enjoy your meal," she basically threw it on the table with a scowl on her face and scurried away. We had no idea this was intentional, we just thought she was having a bad day. To this day I still have no idea what it is that we did to enrage anyone at the restaurant. We ate what we could, paid the bill, and even tipped the waitress. In lieu of a comment card, I took the liberty of leaving a review on the receipt. It was very matter of fact, very clean, no nastiness or obscene language, nothing more than a simple description of the awful food, and it also included our dissatisfaction with the music pouring out of the bar which was so loud, we couldn't even have a conversation. I did however sign the receipt with a snarky comment, "Other than that, everything was great," to which me and my brother chuckled a bit. We had no idea the bartender who works in the back, I'll call him "Apocalypto," was lying in wait. We were no more than a few steps out the door when this psychopath came running out with the receipt in his hand, screaming, "Was this really necessary!" Clearly, he didn't even have the time to read what I wrote, but it is telling that he assumed it must have been some really nasty stuff, but it wasn't! Came here on a weeknight for dinner and it was a solid experience. We asked to sit outside, and they turned on the heat lamps for us, which were pretty effective at keeping us warm. We split the vegan chicken caesar salad, the minimum wage burger with caramelized onions (add on) and fries. The food came out promptly, and it was all very tasty. I'm not normally someone who eats vegan food, but I was impressed with the texture and seasoning of the vegan fried chicken and the salad was well dressed. Been here twice, once a year ago and again just recently.... They might as well call this place joke instead of oak (you're welcome for the bad dad joke! ) There was only one other table of guests at the time of our visit and the staff seemed bothered by our presence. We ordered the Brussels and there were about 10 half pieces on the plate... that equals 5 Brussels sprouts, lol 3 for each of us. The roasted beet salad came with 3 whole garbanzos and a pinch of feta. The rest of our food was fine but not great. The burger was fine but needed sauce and like other reviews had a soggy bottom bun, how do you make a burger that's both soggy and dry?? Cute spot I learned of from a friend who's vegan, so we met up here for brunch. We had a reservation but it didn't seem necessary. That may have been luck as the tables were filling up pretty quickly by the time we were leaving this small establishment. Outdoor seating as well for nicer mornings than the one we arrived on. I love that they have a separate vegan menu! I ordered the Vegan Acorn Benny (Oak's house biscuit, vegan tofu bacon, topped with house vegan hollandaise, and sunny style Yo-Egg) and chose sauteed kale as my side. The house biscuit was a little dry and dense for my liking, but it got the job done. I came home with half my plate which I enjoyed later. If we could do half stars, I would rate Oak 3.5. But it's on the low side of 3.5, so I give it a 3. We really wanted to like this place more: they offer vegan brunch. And on the plus side, the space is great and the service is friendly and prompt. However, the food is just average at best. I did the Just Egg scramble, the biscuits, the tofu bacon, and the kale. The kale was wonderful. The scramble was OK. The tofu bacon was just ... odd -- a block of tofu with some liquid smoke as far as I can tell. And the biscuits ... well, just rock hard. Reminded me of hard tack. The other thing is that the music is just too loud. Full stop. We had to almost yell at each other in order to be heard from opposite sides of the table. Not really what you want in a brunch setting. It may work for Friday and Saturday nights, but for a late Sunday morning where friends are catching up, not so much. Again, just wanted to like this place more since they have vegan options. We get together with friends once a month for vegan brunch; we have our regular spots, and always seek out places where we haven't been before.
