Started coming here after moving to beacon hill months ago, really was starting to enjoy it. Took my family when they came in town here, started to get to know the staff... seemed cool. Happy to have a bar I could come and hang on a day off down the street and not in Capitol Hill. Now they require proof of vaccination to even sit outdoors. Lmao. I came here for dinner which was pretty disappointing... for some reason I was under the assumption that this was a burger spot? But I must have misunderstood. The food was nothing to write home about. My medium rare burger was well done and the chipotle sauce was no bueno. Also $17 for a thin burger with bacon seems like a lot to me. If it had been a thick burger than I would get it... The front dining room is super uncomfortable but the bar, which I had no idea was there until after my meal (you have to walk through the restaurant to get there) and the staff seem cool. Wanted to give two stars, but since the people we're nice I'll go with three. I will say, it was cool they had a gluten free bun and offered some vegan options, though I wouldn't eat here again. read more

I've been in the hospitality business for over forty years as a designer, builder and operator of full service restaurants and bars. Through all those years we strived to provide great food and drinks, ambiance and outstanding service while giving our patrons honest value. Times have changed. Last night, accompanied by three friends, we stepped into the bar at Oak. No table service so we ordered our drinks at the bar. I chose a margarita rocks and laid down a $20, my change, $2.50. I actually really enjoy the food here. I wish they would change the menu so we can get other options. The ambiance is fine, it feels like a hole in the wall ambiance, but definitely has a price tag to it. I've been a few times but the last time left me not wanting to come back. The server who was helping us had this "nonchalant " attitude, but was super rude to all the tables around us and to walk up guests. She even got the other servers around her to join in on the mean-girling to the walk up customers. It was awful to see. She didn't mention to us that refills were not free, and maybe I missed it on the menu, but when fountain sodas ended up costing more than meals it definitely feels weird. Oak could well become a favorite neighborhood watering hole, taking into consideration its extensive and creative drink menu. The Indie music is a definite plus (even if it's played a little too loud). We came here last night and upon entry, were greeted by what seemed like the smell of wort, though I'm unsure if there's actually a brewery on the premises. While there were only a few people when we arrived just after six, Oak was definitely hopping an hour later. I don't know if Oak has air conditioning (being Seattle, they may well not), but Oak was rather warm, stuffy and humid. A thermometer on one wall indicated a temperature just short of 80, and hitting 80 by the time we left. Because I had stuff to do later in the evening, I demurred on the temptation to quaff a cocktail. However, JP got a glass of house red, served in a mini Ball jar. The food menu looked great and I went with the Chicken Pot Pie (after receiving assurances from our friendly waiter that it didn't contain rosemary). JP had planned to just eat like a bird and ordered only the mixed greens, which I also asked for to go along with my pot pie. Even though we had already ordered, when JP noticed curry chick peas on the Daily Specials chalkboard, he requested an order of the peas. The mixed greens with balsamic vinegar were pretty good. Though nicely and thoroughly tossed, there was a smidge too much balsamic vinegar, making the greens overly tart. On the other hand, the chicken pot pie was primo, and I would come back for that. The baked-to-a-perfect-golden-brown crust was tender and the chicken, potato, peas and carrot filling seasoned perfectly. Delicious!! The curry chick peas looked a lot like Cocoa Puffs. Their aroma made me think I had stepped into Namaste in Portland. While the curry on the peas was just too overwhelming for me, I did enjoy the flavor of the clumps of a green sauce (chimichurri?) that had been sprinkled through the chick peas. These are the virtues of doing only a few things, but doing them really well--they're on display here at The Oak. It's hard to believe this was a lifeless zone just a few years ago, because this stretch of Beacon Avenue has four of the cooler new spots in town, all within a couple blocks of one another. Your friendly neighborhood watering hole with the killer kitchen will be played by The Oak (the rest of the ensemble comprises the serious beer bar, the pizzeria, and the Mexican joint). You walk in and there's a bar within a bar. There are booths and banquettes and tables and a little service area in the front rooms, and then up a couple stairs there's the bar-bar with flat screens, stools, and a few more booths and tables. The barback shows a bunch of old fruit crates turned this way and that to hold the different liquors, and the bartop shows a backlit groove filled with tiny antique apothecary bottles, covered with resin. The whole thridt-store-decoration motif is milked to the fullest extent here. It's hard to figure whether these decorations were a budget-saver for them, or ended up costing as much as a less whimsical approach would have. But once this place puts some years under its belt and all the shiny surfaces get some miles on 'em, it will all look really comfortably worn in, and that'll make this place even better. So that's what you've got: stylishly resuscitated old building, brought to life with a light touch. There's a carefully edited line of about a dozen tap handles, plus another dozen beers in cans (dig that they're cans and not bottles). There's a good cocktail setup, though they don't seem to be angling for the super-trendy cocktail crowd. They're just mixing good drinks with good ingredients. Didn't see the wine list but the rest of the bar suggests they probably did a good job with that as well. The staff here is super nice--really friendly and easy-going, and very intent on making sure you're comfortable and you get what you want. Given that they're on the hill, they're clearly looking to cultivate regulars who live nearby. They're remembering what you ordered, they're remembering your favorites, they're thinking about what they have that would be to your tastes. You feel like you're at somebody's house and they expect you to keep coming over to visit. Like all the places through here, you walk out feeling like you forgot to invite them over to your place next time--because you feel like you just went to a house party, rather than a bar/restaurant. And, best of all, the food. Ridiculously good bar food. The menu is short. Just one slightly trimmed sheet of card stock, printed one side only. Two burgers, four sandwiches, two salads, a couple sides, and four entrees. The entrees sound like they could change occasionally, and there are usually specials. The burgers are fantastic--everything is fresh and scratch-made. They must not bake the buns in house, I don't imagine, but they didn't come out of a bag after a long ride in a truck, that's for sure. They're local. The entrees were pretty awesome too, from the small bites I had, but they could be bolder with the seasonings. What really stands out on the menu are the desserts. They're not the same every night, but there are a few slots on the dessert menu that always stay the same--a cake, a pie, something in a mason jar. They're just different things in each slot, as the pastry chef's whims carry the list through different permutations. The mason jar had peach cobbler last night. I'm relieved I didn't tear down the kitchen walls looking for the rest of them. Man, was it good. Really tasted like fresh fruit--not like sugar. We'd read good things about Oak and loved its inclusive, communal philosophy--on paper. The vegan and vegetarian menus were disappointing. Instead of learning how to make a few delicious vegan and vegetarian dishes, they offer the vegan/vegetarian versions of standard meat dishes. There is very little thought or creativity. A larger disappointment was our uninformed waiter, who took my partner's order and came back to tell her that none of it was available. She then revised it, ordering two new things, and he forgot one of them. The staff are friendly--that's a big plus for Oak--but the menu leaves much to be desired. We'll give it another try, but we won't get our hopes up for anything delightful. Overall rating? Quite average. read more

This was an outstanding local pub and restaurant with virtually all natural local organic grown Foods we had the half sandwich and soup for $10 and the pot pie for $11 we were surrounded by the locals and stepped up into the bar which was 90% full and everybody was happy and seem to know everyone else in the bar. My husband and I have been anxiously awaiting the opening of this place, so last night we decided to come check it out. It definitely lived up to my expectations! The menu is pretty small but what they offer is quite delicious. My husband had the minimum wage burger and fries and he loved it. I went with the grilled cheese. I am kind of a grilled cheese snob, and this one was great! They used Cougar Gold cheese, my favorite, and the bread was soft. Nothing worse than eating a sandwich where the bread scrapes the roof of your mouth. The fries here are really good, too. So why 4 stars instead of 5? It takes a little bit too long to get a cocktail, and the bartender did not know how to make a cosmo, a pretty common cocktail and one of my favorites. It should be a pretty, light pink color, not dark red. I can see myself coming here regularly to have a cocktail or two and would love it if they could get that one right! So very close to 5 stars, but not there yet! The food is still good (the desserts are still fun and delicious, like the tuxedo cake with raspberry sauce) and most days, the service is friendly and engaged. I had the Herky fried chicken sandwich, which was new since I had been in last and oooooh it was butterball food if I've ever had it! 3 strips of chicken that could have honestly been half a bird for all I could tell. The chicken was crispy and seasoned right! Their soft bun crushed down to the right hand-grip size so I could use all my strength to keep all the chicken together as I took a bite. And their hand-cut fries are exactly the way I like them. Twice-fried Belgian frites are everywhere nowadays but quality single-fry are harder to find. The only misstep is that there's one guy that is...kind of a flange. He's too brusque for such a friendly neighborhood bar. You know, the guy that won't make eye contact with you at all until he's "ready" to look at you? Eye contact doesn't mean we're married, bro. Just acknowledge that you see me in the throng of people vying for a drink so I know I don't have to do the eager-and-hopeful-leaning-posture-slash-facial expression while standing at the bar. Good happy hour specials ($5 bourbon and 16oz Olympia) and fun happy hour foods. Not too family friendly (no booster seats, limited high chairs, glass cups, no changing tables), but good for adults and small groups/couples. Bar at back with TV. Street parking only. Slow food service... SO slow. Come with no rush, for your sake. The waitress was sweet and semi-attentive but that couldn't make up for the fact that we waited 32 minutes for our food. I have been coming here for years and this has been my wife's favorite place for quite some time, but something Has happened. The experience I had last night was terrible. First off we ordered two burgers like we always do, my wife being a vegan ordered the burger with the field roast. After waiting 45 minutes to receive our meals all the while watching many pick orders leave mind you and the waiter not checking in to see if you wanted a beer refill, what came out was two burgers not as hot as they should have been and hers being an all beef patty! Considering she added vegan cheese and vegan bacon to the burger that may have tipped somebody off I don't know go figure. We waited for the waiter to come back around finally I had to go find him and ask him while he was taking another order to come to our table. We had also ordered two sides of sliced pickles to add to our burgers which never came and he had said that he would go get them and that we would not be charged for them and they never came. We told a second waiter about the pickles so we could add them to our burgers and he brought out deep-fried pickle chips? The waiter who had messed up our order said he was sorry he don't know how it happened and that it was him but needless to say she ended up eating a bun with vegan cheese and vegan bacon. Whatever they have done with your french fries sucks! Used to be our favorite part of the meal but ...lame. Very unfortunate probably won't be coming back, the dude didn't even ask us if we wanted dessert cookies or cupcakes. Very expensive. But delicious. The bartender was our server and she was so polite and patient when my overly excited 7 year came in with me, who was completely braindead after work. My daughter got the Penne and Cheese, which was nice and creamy; nothing fancy--just prepared very well. The penne was not over done, not underdone, just right. The bechamel was simply made, but perfectly so. So many places in Seattle try to dress up this type of dish and end up ruining it. It was nice to go somewhere and not listen to my daughter complain about something I paid almost $11 for. And I liked it too. I got the Field Burger with fries. I was pretty irate to realize when I got the bill that I paid $1.75 for a slice of cheese and $.50 for a side of BBQ sauce. But the burger was good, not spectacular. The fries were rough cut with the skin on, which I liked. They did give me a considerably larger portion of fries than I would have preferred, but I fed them to the child and she was happier for it. The last thing we got was the brussel sprouts with a balsamic reduction, on the happy hour menu. They were ok. On a personal level, I dont particularly care for brussel sprouts that have their outer leaves crispy and flaking away. But, it makes for a nice presentation and it does vary the texture, which I understand the draw for. The balsamic reduction was nice and sweet, my daughter loved it. Suprisingly, this was the menu item that I had the least problem with the price point on. They were $8.25, which is exspensive for an appetizer, or a side, or whatever they were supposed to be classified as--but they did taste good, and it was a offering that you dont see every often in restaurants. Overall, I really enjoyed our meal. I would make a request though that there be MORE vegetarian and vegan options on the menu. Although that might just be me looking for something to be mad at, that frankly isn't there...except the price. Came here with a big group on a Wednesday (called ahead), they had our tables all set up for us and our waitress was always there when you needed her. The burger... yum! I got the cheapest one and it was made with (I think) Painted Hills beef. This burger was the juiciest, and tastiest burger I have ever had. And it was even cooked how I requested well done! A still juicy burger gets and A+++ in my book! The fries that came with my burger were OK, I would have liked them a little more crispier and not as salty. But you could tell they were made in house and not just from a big bag of frozen fries. The drink selection included some interesting beers, cider, and a big liquor selection so there was something for everyone. This bar is just a few blocks from the Beacon Hill Light Rail station so it is easy to get to. The street parking seemed to fill up so public transportation is an easy way to get there. read more

Oak is an eclectic American restaurant on Seattle's Beacon Hill. They are currently open for outdoor dining and we ate there for the first time recently. Oak is located on Beacon Ave S near other businesses, and there is plenty of easy street parking nearby. Currently they are only open for outdoor tables. The outdoor seating is limited but good quality with heat lamps and a comfortable environment. The Oak menu is diverse but also quite limited with only a few appetizers and main courses, plus a wider range of sandwiches and salads. The entree I chose (Fried Chicken) overlapped with two of the six appetizers, leaving limited choices for me. But there was a wide enough range that each of our party of four each had a satisfying meal. The service experience in this post-covid period was very odd. We've eaten out in quite a few places as they started opening up. The menu was online (typical), and so was ordering (less common). After we ordered a chef came out to clarify what dishes we wanted in what order and course. After the initial order, our table was barely visited, which made it hard to ask for additional drinks, refills or water, hard to add additional dishes or sauces, and hard to request the couple of things that we ordered but which didn't turn up. It seemed that the staff were actively trying to avoid interacting with customers for their/our safety. It would have been fine if this interaction had been replaced with a phone number to text or online system, but there wasn't a way to signal and we felt uncomfortable going in to find them given the outdoor dining rules. We haven't experienced this at other restaurants post-covid, and this probably means we won't come back again until things are more back to normal. By coincidence a friend of ours was here a few months ago for brunch and said the service was "weird" then too. So it seems that this wasn't a one-off. The actual food was great. I loved my chicken. My wife had the Brussel sprouts which were great. Our party all liked their main courses and drinks. The quality of the food was great. Ultimately the review here is 4* food with 2* service. Handling things SO well during Covid. We were so impressed with the way our server wiped down tables and chairs, safely seated us away from other patrons, welcomed us while explaining how they are operating. Dun dun dunnnnnnnnn let me tell you about how my forty minute wait for two pot pies and a quinoa fritters turned into a one star review. Waiting is not usually a problem for me it's not necessarily a down turn however when customers come in after my party and get there food much before me that's when we start to nose dive. The pot pie came out full of water and a bland chicken that would get you shamed at the cookout. The fact that we as a society have been forced to wait for bland food is a farce and we should all begin to confront this behavior. Unacceptable is the least I can say maybe it was just a bad night to burn the top of my pot pie and bring out some lukewarm quinoa. My husband and I wanted a more casual date night for the evening and heard that the food was pretty good. We walked inside and went to the back area where the bar is located. Apparently, you have to order at the bar, so I sat at the table alone and observed Phil walk to the bar. As an observer, I watched the bartender (who was working alone on a very busy evening), serve multiple people who arrived at the bar AFTER Phil. She even served a man in a suit sitting right next to where Phil was standing FOUR shots of whiskey without even a glance. Finally, he ordered our drinks and menus and water were brought to our table from a man with a bun. When we were ready to order, I assumed the man with the bun was going to take our order - but again, we had to endure Phil going to the bar and waiting for the busy bartender to take his order amongst young, richer looking people who were clearly at the top of her list. The food was standard. Overall, being an observer, enraged me. It was as though this small room was a microscopic interpretation of a larger problem going on here - wait staff being paid less than minimum wage and desperately groveling for attention of patrons who look as though they will give the highest tip - or who fit into the vibe of the establishment. It was just an odd experience - the business model is completely hierarchical and it makes the patrons, paying good money, take most of the initiative to fight for drinks, food, etc amongst others - creating an environment of clear bias against older individuals, individuals who may look less wealthy, and individuals who are not young and hip. We will not be returning and I will never suggest this establishment to anyone. There are so many other wonderful places in Seattle who truly care about customer service and this place makes it clear they are very much above giving good customer service. read more

First time at Oak, and a very nice experience overall. We were hoping to find some good vegan food near Lumen field and this popped up on a website. I had the Vegan 'Tofish' and Chips Special and my son had the Vegan Phish Witch. Everything was quite tasty and the service was excellent. Clean restrooms. Our only issue was the portion sizes of faux fish vs. fries. There were only two medium sized tofish pieces amidst a giant mound of fries. I kept thinking I'd find another phish stick but to no avail. The Phish Witch was more substantial but was also out of proportion with the fries (neither of us could finish our fries but wanted more protein). I've always had a lovely experience at oak. They are able to accommodate allergies easily on most food items and even have some exclusively vegan things that are quite lovely. Incredible food, beer, and cocktails, with a multitude of vegan options. Oak is a restaurant and bar, serving high quality versions of classic American favorites. The ambiance is clean and modern yet cozy, with lots of dark wood, high ceilings, and natural light. The dining room at the front is accessible to all ages, with a separate upstairs bar for adults only. About half of the food menu is vegan, and not limited to your typical garden burger. Vegan grilled cheese, hot dogs, and even a fish sandwich are available. The beer list includes an impressive selection of reasonably priced pints on draft, and the cocktail menu looked interesting as well. To drink I had a pint of Old Seattle Lager, which was excellent-crisp, light, refreshing, and perfect with food. To eat I went with the Field Burger ($11), which is comprised of local vegan company Field Roast's newly released 'Field Burger', topped with fresh tomato, onion, and arugula, served on a delicious freshly baked bun. The vegan version of their special 'CBGB' sauce, a creamy chipotle mayo, tied the flavors together perfectly, and additional condiments were not necessary. I have to say that I love this place, but you have to go in with some expectations. The place is normally pretty busy and the wait staff are really nice. But sometimes they are so busy that the waitstaff are running around getting everyones orders in and taking care of business that they don't have the time to hang out at your table and be really chatty. It can come across as unfriendly, but really, that isn't the case. They are really nice and when things slow down a bit, you will see that. As far as the food, the fried chicken kale caesar salad is SO GOOD! So are their brussel sprouts. Really good drinks too. Great place as long as you know what to expect. read more

I was lucky enough to have Rachel take care of me. She was phenomenal. The lady covered both the patio and indoor seating like the wonder woman she is. I craved a smokey cocktail and she suggested a Mezcal Negroni to pair with the fried Brussels Sprouts which was an absolute delight. Can't wait to revisit on my next trip back to Seattle. After turning vegan I saw this place mentioned on a vegan page. I had to check it out. I love that it has vegan options and regular options so everyone can come. We sat in the bar, it was a slower night, the staff was extremely friendly. I got the "hotdog" with sauerkraut and vegan cream cheese, jalapeños, it was fillings and delicious.
