My friend, who is vegan, made reservations for us at Nori a couple of weeks ago. I am personally not a vegan or vegetarian but I enjoy trying new places to eat of that caliber. The ambiance is absolutely beautiful and I wish I knew where they got their tableware from because it's stunning. The dimly lit restaurant gives off chill and laidback vibes. It can get a little loud if you go during peak dinner hours but it's not too bad. Our server was very sweet and answered all of our questions and didn't hesitate to give us recommendations. We decided to split an order of Onigiri, brussel sprouts, and Lions mane steak. Everything was absolutely amazing but my favorite dish was the Lions mane steak. I was amazed by how it was prepared and marinated. For dessert, we had to get the chocolate cake with ice cream. The food was delicious and service wonderful. I truly enjoyed celebrating my birthday there last night. We had the Brussels sprouts and they were sweet, spicy and beautifully roasted. The solution to a major gap in plant-based/vegan eating has arrived The ambiance is gorgeous and our server was one of the top 10 I've experienced in Austin - super patient, kind and knowledgeable. We made it during Happy Hour and saved $3 on each cocktail and $4 on each of our rolls. We started with a fresh and tasty cocktail. We ordered a Spicy Agave Margarita (and they let you specify how spicy) and a That Drink Over There (nomz). We started with gyoza and the order had 4 and we def could have had more. We also ordered three different rolls. The Shiitake was our favorite ..and the most expensive, but I would order again because it was that good. The mushrooms added a texture and umami flavor that felt more like traditional sushi. We also had the Volcano and Creamy Crunchy. Both were great! For vegans this is a treat. We weren't sure if they would take the veggie route or the try-and-use-fake seafood products/mimic seafood route. I believe they have one Good Catch roll but the rest seem more veggie based. Both are valid ways, but if you were curious these are not "tomato lox turned salmon" type rolls:) The tempura, sauces, and textures still bring back those special sushi date nights we used to enjoy. They do tend to use the same core ingredients in a lot of dishes though so take a look at the menu beforehand if you're a picky eater. I'm not vegan but this is my favorite sushi roll place in Austin. I've brought other non-vegans and recommend it constantly to people. The rolls are so well crafted and balanced with great flavor, that I don't feel like fish is missing at all. It also makes the cost more affordable since there is no meat. I've tried most of the rolls at the this point and I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. Every time I go, I'm excited to go the next time to try more. Happy Hour - I would definitely recommend going early during happy hour as they have a discount off rolls. Parking - a little bit tight. There is a lot that fills up easily but there is street parking nearby. Inside the restaurant - this is a great date night restaurant with moody lighting. The insides are very modern, vampy, and beautiful. I would recommend the hearts of palm, the dragon, and the spider roll (especially this one if you love mushrooms). The only one I've tried so far I didn't like as much is the volcano roll. The shell is a little too crunchy and overpowered by the sweet potato. Loved the vibe of the place and it was totally packed! So clearly a popular joint. Based on my thoughts below, I don't think I'd come here for the sushi rolls again... They had good elements, but the execution was off when you're used to eating authentic sushi from Japanese chefs. The ramen and bowls looked fabulous though, so I'd try those next time! Natalie, behind the bar, was also fabulous; I came alone, and she totally made my night! So, a few thoughts ... I got the Manhattan. I loved the mayo but you can get that on the side. I also loved all of the ingredients Inside of the roll. However, I thought the roll needed more spice to counteract the mango. I would also put the mango inside the roll, as directly on top is too acidic, and tends to burn your tongue (maybe put avocado on top instead). The fried onion texture felt out of place against the soft textures of avocado, eggs, and cream cheese, and sticks in your teeth. So overall, I wasn't such a fan. I'll note though, this wasn't one of the recommended rolls. I also ordered the espresso martini. I watched drink after drink come out completely full to the top and then I got mine (you can see the starting line). For $14, there's much to be desired here. The taste was excellent, but I would just stress consistency in pours. I also got the volcano; this was recommended as the most popular roll. The size was huge, so good value for your money. However, again, the texture thing, which I've never noticed while eating sushi. The sweet potato was overpowering! It took up the whole roll. It needs to be half the size, and it needs a crunch, such as a pickled radish. I might also tempera the ingredients Inside the roll, as opposed to the roll itself. Rumor has it that this restaurant has fabulous food! Well, it really does! I loved the plant based sushi rolls and dumplings. I love raw sushi too but this clearly stands on its own merits. Absolutely loved the food here!! My sister and I visited for dinner and originally had a reservation for 6:15pm, but we arrived early and they were flexible and sat us at 5pm. The lighting is dim, and the decor and environment appear elevated but also casual. We tried the volcano roll ($14, my personal favorite), the shiitake roll ($22, my sister's favorite), the dragon ($16, very good), rainbow ($17, ok), and the spider ($12, smallest and cheapest but still tasted very delicious). Every bite was full of creative flavor and textures. We devoured everything in addition to getting the lavender mocktail ($8) and the lava cake ($10 without ice cream). The drink was refreshing and very lemony, while the chocolate lava cake was so rich and well-balanced with fresh strawberries and a fruit sauce. As it was happy hour (5-6:30pm on a weekday), the mocktails/cocktails were $3 off, and the sushi/maki rolls were $4 off, so the total bill (excluding tip) came out to $82. The space is modern and dimly lit with a few tables in the back.My husband and I tried Nori on a Friday night and was pleasantly surprised! We decided to sit at the bar, and the bartenders were very social and accommodating. The stars of the show was the tuna nigiri and the volcano roll. The tuna had the same exact texture as real tuna! I loved it!! The volcano roll was dense with yummy sweet potato, avocado and chili sauce. The salmon was also pretty good and had a nice yuzu flavor - it just didn't have the same texture as salmon. I would say 5 rolls is good enough to share with two people. It can get a bit pricy so I recommend trying their Monday all day happy hours! read more

This last experience at Nori with my husband was fantastic! I had the best Miso soup of my life. The Shitake Gyoza was good, but the apricot sauce made it next level. We also ordered the Shitake and Texan rolls--both were amazing! We shared the Lion's Mane entree, which was good but not the best I ever had. The broccolini tasted like oil, and the potatoes were standard. We sat on the patio which had very nice ambience. We also were delighted by the mocktail selection because we don't drink alcohol. Intrigued, we decided to circle back and give it a try, and we're glad we did. Dimly lit, with a simple, elevated decor, the atmosphere is in the realm of upscale casual. Upon seating, our server, Ellie, welcomed us with much appreciated glasses of water, served with no ice. We advised we were first timers and discussed the menu, receiving recommendations in the various sections. We chose to sample several things. We ordered a spicy pineapple from the zero proof menu, which was refreshing, and not too spicy. We started with a seaweed salad (wakame), a standard choice for us at Japanese restaurants. It was refreshing, and pleasantly tangy. The cauliflower wings were outstanding, hearty with a tasty mayo dip. The rainbow roll was impressively comparable to standard sushi in taste, texture and presentation. The shiitake gyoza was good, and I'd order it again; in the grand scheme it was less remarkable than the other items we selected. We ended the meal with a hot green tea. Nori is one of my favorite places to eat. A bit pricy for sushi without the fish but totally worth it. Every bite was a flavor explosion. Both rolls had a great texture and flavor (I don't like a mushy roll). The spicy edamame is really good too but a tad salty. My partner had the Yakisoba noodles, they were very flavorful however he was disappointed there was more cabbage then there was noodles, however , still highly recommend!! The cheese cake was good wish it had a little more crust for texture. But it came with fresh strawberries and blueberries along with mango sherbet. Cute place, very dim lighting - kinda small indoor area so reservations are definitely recommended but not required! The server we had was very quick and polite, and made sure our drinks were always full. My favorite items were definitely the spider and heart of palm rolls. My friends really enjoyed the Manhattan though, which I thought tasted a little odd with the combination of "just egg" and cream cheese. The shishitos and meatballs were okay but very small. Thinking about this restaurant, I would definitely go again but the value of the small dishes is disappointing. It's an interesting choice for location- fine dining vegan sushi just up the road from the UT campus across the street from a drive-thru beer barn in a spot that used to be a Five Guys...but I am here for it! If you're a college student looking for sake bombs and overly strong, cheap drinks...why are you going to a fine dining vegan sushi restaurant? Special callout for using a skinned tomato (which looked surprisingly like tuna) and the vegan tamago. I am normally not a fan of Just Egg by itself, but as tamago it really works. This is what we got, recommend all: beet fries nigiri sampler volcano creamy crunchy hearts of palm roll We went during their soft open, so there may be some changes over the next several months as Nori finds its footing. This is a review from someone who isn't completely plant-based, loves sushi, and could eat it for every single meal if possible. I found my experience at Nori to be a very interesting one indeed. Between me and a friend, I was able to try the following items: Shiitake Gyoza - these were excellent! The apricot gastrique gave it a nice acidic flavor instead of a traditional vinegar. Nigiri Sampler - this was great to try out different options but I preferred some over others. The tomato was very unique and refreshing and I enjoyed it. Tamago with vegan egg was nice as expected. I also liked the mushroom one quite a bit. The others were a bit basic for my tastes, though. Texan Roll - I really enjoyed this roll. The blueberry sauce and pickled wasabi really stood out to me and were very unique additions to a sushi roll. Spicy Toona Roll (my friend ordered but I had half) - tasted a lot like a normal spicy tuna roll! I wondered what they used as the tuna substitute and it was actually a bit intense for my friend, who is fully vegan. Molten Cake w/ Ice-cream - this was just okay. The molten cake was a bit burnt so it made it a little bitter. The ice cream was decent and helped but would probably try the mango cheesecake next time. The location is interesting since it's in a spot popular for students (Five Guys used to be here). But definitely a welcome vegan addition. Tried the Shiitake roll and the volcano roll and the Shiitake roll was easily my favorite. It was fresh, savory, and just felt like a regular roll. MIND BLOWN. It's been days since my first visit to Nori and I'm STILL telling everyone I know about it! Every single thing we ate and drank was superb. We started with the tempura, brussel sprouts, and Chik'n Karaage. Loved all three, but the 'chicken' was out of this world. That texture was almost too real! The table was a huge fan though. The broccolini was cooked perfectly and that potato mousseline? WOW! I kept going back for more. For rolls, we chose the Rainbow, Creamy Crunchy, and Volcano. UNBELIEVABLE. I was a major fan of all three, but if I had to pick one, it would definitely be the volcano or creamy crunchy. What amazing flavors! I still can't believe these were vegan! I've always wanted to try a classic Philadelphia roll with cream cheese, but I never did before going vegan in 2016. Well after having the Creamy Crunchy, I don't want it ANY OTHER WAY! So so so yummy! And the Rainbow had so much flavor and freshness to it. They all were so balanced, not being overly 'fishy' or too salty or saucy. And the crunch of the tempura was perfect! When my friends announced we were headed to a vegan sushi restaurant, you can believe I had some reservations. But, I gotta admit, I was pleasantly surprised from the nanosecond I walked in. Everything--and I mean everything--was filled with flavor and had incredible presentation. Our server seemed a bit hesitant to tell us what his favorite dishes were, so we ordered what we thought sounded the most tantalizing. The faux-spicy tuna (or toona) was a definite crowd favorite. Meanwhile, I would bathe in the zingy soy sauce our Impossible gyoza was immersed in. I did have a bit of shell shock at the bill (and, yes, we went during happy hour when all rolls are $4 off). We did not know this is vegan sushi (no fish) when we walked in. Some of our group wanted to leave. SO GLAD WE STAYED! What an amazing meal. The decor is upscale japanese and the servers and host are great. Each dish was shockingly similar in taste and texture to real fish. I asked the server so many questions about how the chef achieves does this. It is magic. We added several dishes just to try more. Highly recomm3nd you try it too. Have an open mind.
