Every time I eat here, I'm blown away! While I'm not vegan or vegetarian and do eat fish, whenever I have a sushi craving, I come to this vegan gem. By now, I've probably tried everything on the menu at least once, and it's simply delicious! The rolls are unique and innovative, making this my favorite sushi spot. The ambiance is perfect for a date night or dinner with friends, and the service has always been excellent. During our last visit, we came for happy hour, and it was a great deal! I've probably dined at Nori 20 times and it's excellent (obviously). My absolute favorites are the Maki (Lotus and Rainbow Roll are chef's kiss). For chilly evenings, I love the tofu katsu curry. I saw many people on dates here, but also some people just showing at the bar. To start, I loved the Brussels. Definitely recommend getting them great way to start the dinner. In town and I was terribly intrigued by a vegan sushi place. I've only seen them in NYC and Taiwan so I was thrilled there's one only a few hours away from me. We do have additional food restrictions - no alliums - so I called ahead of time to make sure we had decent options. I was told they had a no onion no garlic menu! We ended up getting there 30 minutes before their lunch service was over. The place is located at Guadalupe and 33rd Street and it shares a lot with a Thai place. It does have dim lighting to give it that "romantic" feel. I wish there was more lighting for better pictures but it's not a huge con. I do like the darker decor. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and everyone was really nice and helpful. In fact, when I explained our food restrictions, our waitress said she'd look at their menu. Ten minutes later, she wasn't back yet and I looked over. Apparently, she was going through EVERY item on the lunch menu with the chef, which I was impressed with. Many places just sort of do the bare minimum. We could have almost everything on the menu as long as certain sauces weren't used. I ended up getting: CHICK'N AND WAFFLES: Never got this before because we could never have it at vegan eateries. It featured a strawberry sauce and matcha syrup. The "chicken" is mushroom root based... I take it to mean mycelium. In fact, I'm almost sure it might be Meati. It tastes almost just like the real thing. Perfectly crispy and nicely seasoned. The waffles are super crispy and perfect. We all know strawberries aren't that sweet so the tartness was great! CRUNCHY ROLL, VOLCANO ROLL: these are the only 2 rolls we could have and both were equally as good. The flavors melded perfectly and I really enjoyed them. We got about 6 pieces per roll. If you're looking to get full, you'll need at least 2 rolls per adult. SWEET POTATO ROLL: on the kid menu. we got this for our kid with food allergies (he's allergic to wheat, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, avocado, kiwi, and pineapple). Funny enough, he was full from snacking so his sister ate most all of it. She really loved it and asked to come back for dinner. HAHA. A note: although it only says sweet potato roll on the menu, it comes with avocado. It went back to the kitchen and they gave us back double sweet potato. Simple is perfect. NORI'S LAVENDER TEA: This was on their mocktail menu and is supposed to be "Freshly brewed Japanese Green Tea, Lavender, Citrus. Mint. Delicate. Bittersweet. Fruity." It was... okay. I couldn't really taste much matcha or lavender but I did taste what was like lemonade and a hint of mint. I love it when mint is added to lemonade but with the name, I wanted to taste everything else as well. It is slightly bittersweet (but not really that sweet), but would be better if I could taste matcha or lavender. This place isn't cheap but it's great for celebrations or - if you're not from Austin - if you're in town. The 2 rolls and chickn and waffles was perfect for 2 adults (not too full, not hungry either). If you have two kids, probably recommend 1 per kid, but it worked out for us to only get one this time. Was so excited to try this fully vegan sushi spot, and it did not disappoint! As a vegetarian, it's not common to go to a sushi place with so many options, so this was overwhelming (in a good way-- I wanted to try everything!). The concept is pretty cool, and it's a great spot for vegans. I was shocked by how good their chicken karaage was - I don't have a great palette, but I do think the texture and taste was super similar to actual chicken even though it was mushroom. Their drinks are great. I had a yuzu moscow mule, and it was pretty strong. Service is fantastic. Food comes out really fast. I tried my friend's curry, and the curry flavor was so good and the tofu is so soft. The batter on the tofu was also perfect. My other friends and I split three rolls, and I think they were just okay. The crowd favorite was the Texan. Overall, it's a cool restaurant and definitely a great spot for vegetarians and vegans. We didn't get our drinks until nearly our meal arrived and then one drink was wrong and had to be remade. Our waitress wasn't very good about checking on us. I've dined at Nori some three or four times now, and the food is consistently good. It's now one of the places we take out-of-town visitors to impress them with Austin's plant based dining scene. Maki rolls here are excellent. We enjoyed the Manhattan roll the most, and the Volcano roll. The Dragon roll was also good, and so was the Rainbow. Yakisoba noodles were good as well. On our last visit we ordered the Nigiri sampler, but we thought the Maki rolls were more bang for the buck. Katsu curry on our earlier visit was great. We need to try the Ramen bowl on our next trip. To keep up with the food, I keep expecting service here that would leave me with no choice but a 25 percent gratuity; but the service here hasn't lived up to that high expectation so far. So, so grateful for the empathetic and creative individuals that look out for vegetarian and vegan palates...not just by offering "that one dish" on the menu, but by offering VARIETY. That's all we've ever wanted all along, lol! I only know of two places in Austin that offer an ample selection of vegan sushi---Blue at the Domain, and of course Nori. Nori is the standout of the two, offering a multi-page menu of ALL VEGAN items. Everything from the appetizers to the sushi to the ramen to the desserts are all vegan, and it's absolutely fantastic. Came here for a date night and enjoyed the ceviche (featuring sweet potato puree!), crispy brussels sprouts (a guaranteed winner), and two rolls (the Dragon and the Texan). Between two people, this was the perfect amount of food for a "normal" dinner. Even though the restaurant was busy, the waitstaff were attentive for the most part, and the food came out pretty quickly! I would come here everyday if it wasn't for the price tag! The noodle was a little on the soggier side but the noodle with the tofu went really well. My favorite sushi was the Creamy Crunchy and Rainbow. The mix of veggies, tofu, and crunchy outer body. Nori is unique. Vegan/vegetarian Japanese cuisine. That choice places an enormous burden on preparation, substitutes and sauces. Nori brings it off marvelously. First the ambience is soothing, calm and even a little romantic. Lots of couples enjoying fine dining together at Nori is testimony to that. Service from the hostess all through the waitstaff was initially superb -- cordial and helpful to the nth degree. And we're are a party of 5 adults, a toddler and an infant. The staff went beyond the call of duty to serve us, including getting kids dishes out to us chop chop so the younguns were placated. As the evening wore on DIL sensed some irritation on the part of some staff with the extra work involved on our part with handling babies, particularly as we were going through the logistics of packing up baby gear. That little display almost cost them a star. We started with both edamames - regular and spicy. The regular was, well, regular and very acceptable, but the spicy was just sharp enough to be really interesting. Daughter and I shared several items. The nigiri sampler is a must, just to see how they creatively substitute plant based items for seafood. The tomato-based salmon substitute, for example, was very well executed in both taste and texture. We also tried the Katsura nigiri, mushrooms treatment substituted for fried chicken. The nigiri itself was savory and crisp and rich, but the sauces (spicy Mayo in two forms, sweet soy sauce and negi) were splendid. So much so that I stole a slice of toddler grandson's roll to use in sopping more of it up. Nori does incredible stuff with mushrooms across the menu and with sauces. We added the sunflower roll, a wild combination with tomato based salmon, crisp tempura tofu and an unusual sauce. Maybe not as uniquely delicious as the Katsu nigiri but a more than adequate dish. We got a reservation for 5pm so that we could beat the rush and get the happy hour prices ($4 off per roll). The interior is a bit dark but also has a nice ambiance as they have a candle per table. The food is known to come out quite slow. For the 4 of us, we initially ordered 4 rolls, which took 40 minutes to come. The fifth roll has faster. I personally liked the volcano roll because it was crunchy, but the others were fine too (spider, rainbow, texan). I did not have high expectations for a vegan sushi place, since sushi for me is all about the raw meat, but I'd say that this is really not bad at all. Came here for dinner on a Tuesday evening. They were fairly busy, but we didn't encounter a wait. If you're coming on a busnier night it might be worth looking into a reservation. I thought the menu was super interesting, even beyond the sushi options, and had a pretty hard time deciding on what to order. We decided to share the No Salmon Nigiri, Shiitake roll, and Creamy Crunchy roll. All 3 came out quite good, but the Shiitake roll was the clear star of the meal. The shiitake mix brought a great savoriness that went super well with the miso caramel sauce. The little bits of tempura on top gave a nice crunch without overwhelming the roll. This one is a must order for your first time! The No Salmon nigiri is not kidding because it absolutely does not taste anything like salmon. This is absolutely a lemon citrus roll with a hint of sesame. I liked it a lot, but don't expect it to even try approximating a traditional salmon roll. I'd be curious if the other nigiri fall into the same boat of being a vessel for other flavors. The Creamy Crunchy most closely approximated its traditional sushi counterpart. If you've had fried rolls before, this is a pretty similar experience and honestly wouldn't be super out of place at an American sushi buffet. I thought the richness and slight bit of heat worked well together, but a deep fried roll with cream cheese won't be for everyone The one notable ding I would give them is the relative lack of service. They were pretty short staffed and seemed to only have two servers handling a large volume of tables. Our server was nice and helpful when we asked questions, but was pretty inattentive and slow overall. He gave a few recommendations that we wanted to think over, but we sat with our menus closed for quite a while before he returned to take our order. Our pretty small cups of water were also never refilled in our time there. Understandable given the number of tables he was working with, but doesn't give the restaraunt a pass for understaffing. Overall, I think this spot is worth checking out whether you're a lover of traditional sushi or a vegetarian/vegan in search of trying for the first time. One of my really good friends suggested we come here a while ago, and we finally made time for it last week. Eating here was utterly delightful. If you're looking to expand your palate's taste buds, you came to the right place. The ambiance here is so relaxed and the space was so well decorated you wouldn't know that it used to be a Five Guys. We sat in the back area where the ceilings have skylights, so even when the sun was setting, you still got a decent amount of light to see the menu or your food. I loved the illustrations for the cocktail portion of the menu for a visual cue of what adventure you'd like to take. I ended up doing the Yuzu from the mocktails and added vodka to it. It was light, refreshing, and packed a punch. Our server was very patient, and knowledgeable, and gave some good recommendations/feedback in response to all of our questions. For dinner, we ordered two rolls- the shiitake and the creamy crunchy (since they were $4 off during HH), and the lion's mane steak. I've eaten vegan food before, but something about how these rolls are seasoned and each component melds harmoniously felt like I was eating "normal" sushi. This was also my first time trying lion's mane mushroom and the color, texture, and flavor was oddly mind-boggling (in a good way!). That was more than enough food to share between two gals, but we had to go the extra mile and get dessert. The chocolate lava cake did not disappoint.
