The Mountain Standard gives a contemperary take on American food and is restaurant worth your visit. This was recommended to us before we got to Vail so you'll want to get a reservation far in advance. Mountain Standard has been in Vail for over 10 years and Mountain Standard shares the same owners as Sweet Basil. I enjoyed the dining experience. The only downside was a rowdy table next to ours but sometimes that is how it goes. We shared the smoked short rib empanadas, rotisserie chicken salad, the smoked short rib char siu as an entree with a glass of Malbec. I had to have the buttermilk sea salt biscuit as it was recommended by friends before the visit and it didn't disappoint. The presentation of the dishes were enjoyable and entertaining. When ordering it didn't feel like a lot of food but walked away satiated with no room for dessert. It's on the pricier side but on par for Vail. read more

This place was recommended to us by a lot of people while planning our trip to Vail. We originally made a dinner reservation, but shortly after the GM called to let us know they would be closed for an employee holiday party and to either join them for lunch or dinner on a different night. She even emailed me afterwards so I had her info in case I needed it. We stopped in for lunch and sat at the bar and had a wonderful afternoon. Brian was the bartender and couldn't have been more hospitable. The rotisserie chicken salad was delicious, the dressing was full of flavor and their smoky Bloody Mary was yummy too. Mountain Standard is a nice restaurant, but what makes them stand out is that their food is cooked over an open and live wood fire. The traditional style of cooking and the open kitchen create a rustic but also welcoming environment. The food is delicious. The service is great. It is not a cheap meal, but it is a very high-quality one. My boyfriend and I came here for dinner one night. We sat inside, but patio seating is an option as well for those who want a view of the river and mountain scenery. We were quite hungry so we ordered a few different things. We started with Martin's green chili and the smoked angus short rib. The chili was good, but the smoked angus short rib was the clear winner between the two. The short rib was huge, and it had a lot of meat and a lot of flavor. I had shrimp and scallops for my entree, and he had the corned pork shank. The seafood tasted fresh, and the corned pork shank was super flavorful. Both paired so well with the purees that they were served with. For dessert, we had the chocolate lava cake. It was rich, and it was a great end to our meal. Our meal costed a pretty penny, but the experience was well worth the money. There are plenty of good restaurants out there, but Mountain Standard is a memorable one. read more

Been dying to try out Mountain Standard for years!! I am ashamed to say that it took us 7 years to finally try out the place when we live just a pass away and are always in Vail. Huge regrets! Regret that it took us that long to finally discover our new go-to place in Vail. Beautiful restaurant, great bar area, amazing crew and delicious food. Not surprised though, all our restaurateur friends in Vail say MS is their favourite restaurant in the area. We've tried Basil and love it too so MS lived up to the standard for sure. Went for dinner and sat at the bar, Mr New Jersey bartender made great recommendations (sorry did not catch your name). Went back 3 days later for lunch and Brian was great. This was our first, and won't be our last for Mountain Standard. We've eaten at Sweet Basil (sister restaurant) and wanted to give this one a shot. The tip from our hotel was to just drop in despite reservations being full, because many times the patio is first come, first serve. And we got a great seat with this useful tip. The service was top notch. Joe our server provided an amazing explanation of the menu, and was honest about what to skip. We started with the ahi tuna crudo, perfect for a warm summer day. The tuna was fresh, and burst of pineapple and ginger complimented the fish. What I loved about the dish was the balance of flavors and textures from the sweetness of the pineapple, creaminess of the avocado purée and the heat from the samba sauce (homemade of course). The next dish was one that I have never seen before on a menu, the grilled avocado and pistachio dip. Interesting combo that I would never have paired together. While not the most photogenic dish, the flavors will wow you. Grilling the avocado gave it a slight smoky flavor and the pistachio added a slight sweetness. The dip is decorated with these beautifully pickled pink onions and serrano chilis add the heat. A warm basket of crispy black lime tortilla chips give the dip the extra bite and salt needed to bring it all together. Don't pass this spot up next time you're visiting Vail! read more

Visited for lunch today. Got there at 2:40pm and was able to get a table for two as most people were finishing up their lunch. We ordered the Cheeseburger and the Wedge Salad. I don't typically order burgers from restaurants because they never cook them well done which is the only way I prefer them. I asked the server if they would cook it well done and she assured me they would. I wanted to try it because it had pimento cheese and bacon so it sounded unique. When the burger arrived it was cooked well done! I was so happy. The taste was really good - we had a side of onion rings with it and they were slightly spicy but not too spicy so they were a perfect accompaniment. The wedge salad included avocado which made it stand apart from a typical wedge. I highly recommend this restaurant - we will return when we're in Vail again! read more

No sensible review is any good without photos; It's my favorite thing to do... Scroll the yelp "timeline" in search of the best looking food when I'm scrolling the menu. But I'm not practicing what I preach so next time I visit I'll update with some pics of my favorites... And on to the important stuff.. This place is a foodie and service Vail staple for tourists, locals, and semi-locals (like us) who will drive up 70 just for some pretty scenery and this spot. Which is saying a lot because the 70 is, well the 70. (IYKYK). Our favorites, the bar seating because the bartenders are super friendly and attentive. They serve the best margarita within a 100 mile radius. Man it's good. It's consistent. I've seen the same faces many times. The food is always excellent! You can't miss the biscuits and the pimento cheese. We usually hit this spot up before the dinner menu and you honestly won't go wrong with anything, from oysters to killer turkey club, onion soup and fried chicken sandwiches. Don't be naive and try to walk in without a reservation after 5pm, you will be in for a wait. But it's always well worth it. read more

Giving that rating since even food was amazing but service was not professional at alll. Even have to say people from the kitchen who brought food were knowledgeable and friendly. But our waitress was probably new so sorry for her but did nit know anything about menu. When we asked about if salad big enough to split she said yes was surprised whe we got tree endive leaves . Salad was delicious but since our main course was trout with a lot of bib lettuce , different appetizer was more appropriate. Wish we got that advice . Everything about this place is 5 star. Accepted walk-ins at 5pm came in clutch as we had wanted to try this restaurant, but it's tough to get a reservation. A very thoughtful menu with food crafted in a very intelligent way. Overall delicious food and very well presented. The selection of food is stellar. They have some things on the menu that are really hard to find, like bone marrow. The bone marrow is incredible.. this is a must order. Their shrimp and grits dish was amazing. We went to eat there because a friend recommended it as one of the most popular and great kitchens in Vail. It was delicious, but I was not thrown away by the menu. They offered a short and diverse menu, including fish, hamburger and entrees. Every dish, as simple as it looked, included a "different" ingredient from how traditionally it would be done. For example, the burger included a pepper cheese and garlic sauce instead of mustard or ketchup. I had the Rocky Mountain Trout with veggies. The price was not over the top, ,I ding that we were in Vail. All CDC recommendations were in place and the service was very good. If you want to go, you must make a reservation. Had an absolutely wonderful meal at Mountain Standard this is my new favorite restaurant in Vail! The food and atmosphere are perfect for a nice meal after a long day on the mountain. For some reason I had never gotten around to trying bone marrow and this was my first time ever eating it. I definitely chose the right spot because the bone marrow here was melt in your mouth amazing! After that we ate the shrimp and grits which were lovely nice and creamy with a perfect balance of spices! Had lunch with a vendor rep during a meeting in Vail and it was great. The bartenders were terrific while we waited and our lunch was excellent. Dinner was amazing. Our group usually just order's a bunch of stuff and we end up sharing everything. The bill for 3 of us not including tip was just over $250. Service was great we always had what we needed. We started out with the Warm Pimento Cheese, the Smoked Angus Short Rib and the Ahi Tuna Crudo. Of the 3 my favorite was definitely the Warm Pimento Cheese, wow. I'd say it's a must order if you're dining at Mountain standard. For dinner we ordered the Standard Wedge, SRF Wagyu Picanha Steak and the Steelhead Trout. Of the three I'd go with the Steelhead Trout which is surprising for me because I never go with the fish but the butternut squash gnocchi that was paired with it was amazing. For dessert I ordered the campfire smore drumstick which was also surprisingly good because it just looks like a traditional ice cream cone that took us a minute to cut into. Quality of food is amazing.. I noticed the appetizers have big portions and the main course is very small.. the flavors are amazing it compliments every ingredient... Service not so great...
