Food - We were lucky to dine on Mountain Standard's 10th anniversary, and our dinner began with complimentary appetizers. Our server offered us a pineapple tuna crudo along with beef cheek bao. The bao was delicious, and the beef cheek was super tender. Since these were not on the menu, I'll move onto what I ate. I started with the pimento cheese. Wow - easily the best pimento cheese I've ever had. The cheese was topped with a bacon jam, which I mixed and generously spread onto the grilled bread. I could have eaten two portions of this dish. I also had the French Onion Soup. It was ok. But the star of the night was the Shrimp and Grits The shrimp were perfectly cooked, plump, and came with no tails! The grits were buttery smooth and topped with crisp pancetta which gave my bite a bit of salt and crunch. It made my top 3 shrimp & grits of all time. We started with Martin's green chili and the smoked angus short rib. The chili was good, but the smoked angus short rib was the clear winner between the two. The short rib was huge, and it had a lot of meat and a lot of flavor. I had shrimp and scallops for my entree, and he had the corned pork shank. The seafood tasted fresh, and the corned pork shank was super flavorful. Both paired so well with the purees that they were served with. For dessert, we had the chocolate lava cake. It was rich, and it was a great end to our meal. Our meal costed a pretty penny, but the experience was well worth the money. The Mountain Standard gives a contemperary take on American food and is restaurant worth your visit. This was recommended to us before we got to Vail so you'll want to get a reservation far in advance. Mountain Standard has been in Vail for over 10 years and Mountain Standard shares the same owners as Sweet Basil. I enjoyed the dining experience. The only downside was a rowdy table next to ours but sometimes that is how it goes. We shared the smoked short rib empanadas, rotisserie chicken salad, the smoked short rib char siu as an entree with a glass of Malbec. I had to have the buttermilk sea salt biscuit as it was recommended by friends before the visit and it didn't disappoint. The presentation of the dishes were enjoyable and entertaining. When ordering it didn't feel like a lot of food but walked away satiated with no room for dessert. It's on the pricier side but on par for Vail. read more

This was our first, and won't be our last for Mountain Standard. We've eaten at Sweet Basil (sister restaurant) and wanted to give this one a shot. The tip from our hotel was to just drop in despite reservations being full, because many times the patio is first come, first serve. And we got a great seat with this useful tip. The service was top notch. Joe our server provided an amazing explanation of the menu, and was honest about what to skip. We started with the ahi tuna crudo, perfect for a warm summer day. The tuna was fresh, and burst of pineapple and ginger complimented the fish. What I loved about the dish was the balance of flavors and textures from the sweetness of the pineapple, creaminess of the avocado purée and the heat from the samba sauce (homemade of course). The next dish was one that I have never seen before on a menu, the grilled avocado and pistachio dip. Interesting combo that I would never have paired together. While not the most photogenic dish, the flavors will wow you. Grilling the avocado gave it a slight smoky flavor and the pistachio added a slight sweetness. The dip is decorated with these beautifully pickled pink onions and serrano chilis add the heat. A warm basket of crispy black lime tortilla chips give the dip the extra bite and salt needed to bring it all together. Don't pass this spot up next time you're visiting Vail! read more

This place was recommended to us by a lot of people while planning our trip to Vail. We originally made a dinner reservation, but shortly after the GM called to let us know they would be closed for an employee holiday party and to either join them for lunch or dinner on a different night. She even emailed me afterwards so I had her info in case I needed it. We stopped in for lunch and sat at the bar and had a wonderful afternoon. Been here plenty. Pork shank is what they're known food and get it if you go. That should make it a 4 star. However the dining room constantly feels like a sauna. We've been multiple times and all I can think every time, summer or winter, is how hot it is. Last time we went we had a reservation and there was a table on the patio with the exact number of chairs for our party. Could we sit there? No, it was reserved for walk ups... The sister restaurant Sweet Basil is fantastic. Without fans or a more accommodating sitting we may not be back to Mountain Standard. I asked the server if they would cook it well done and she assured me they would. I wanted to try it because it had pimento cheese and bacon so it sounded unique. When the burger arrived it was cooked well done! I was so happy. The taste was really good - we had a side of onion rings with it and they were slightly spicy but not too spicy so they were a perfect accompaniment. They offered a short and diverse menu, including fish, hamburger and entrees. Every dish, as simple as it looked, included a "different" ingredient from how traditionally it would be done. For example, the burger included a pepper cheese and garlic sauce instead of mustard or ketchup. I had the Rocky Mountain Trout with veggies. Dinner was amazing. Our group usually just order's a bunch of stuff and we end up sharing everything. The bill for 3 of us not including tip was just over $250. Service was great we always had what we needed. We started out with the Warm Pimento Cheese, the Smoked Angus Short Rib and the Ahi Tuna Crudo. Of the 3 my favorite was definitely the Warm Pimento Cheese, wow. I'd say it's a must order if you're dining at Mountain standard. For dinner we ordered the Standard Wedge, SRF Wagyu Picanha Steak and the Steelhead Trout. Of the three I'd go with the Steelhead Trout which is surprising for me because I never go with the fish but the butternut squash gnocchi that was paired with it was amazing. For dessert I ordered the campfire smore drumstick which was also surprisingly good because it just looks like a traditional ice cream cone that took us a minute to cut into.
