Updating this review because we ended up back there for a second night in a row, which is unusual for us and was kind of an accident, but I'm so glad we did. We enjoyed our food even more this time, and the vibe and service are both immaculate. How can a simple rotisserie chicken salad with fried artichokes taste so damn good? We were really looking forward to trying this place based on a friend's review, but unfortunately had a somewhat disappointing experience as far as service with the manager. It's a loud and busy popular place. Our party of four was seated right away with our reservation on a Saturday evening. Our waiter was very polite and when we asked about wines, he said he wasn't too familiar with them and said he would be happy to grab his manager, who is a sommelier. We said it wasn't necessary, but he was so gracious and said he would grab her. The manager on duty came to our table 15 minutes later and surprisingly was curt and disinterested when we only asked a couple questions to help us chose our wine. We felt like we were a bother to ask questions to someone that is supposed to be trained to be skilled in wine theory and table-side service. The grilled mahi mahi and the Angus steak both had great flavor and the meal itself was delicious, but the experience with the somm/manager on duty had us disappointed when we left. read more

Let's just talk about the downside, since it shows the standard by which they treat their customers and staff. First, charging a 3% fair wage fee, simply shows that they do not want to take full responsibility for providing fair wages and benefits and that they want to show prices that are not fully priced out. Take full responsibility for the costs of your business and your employees. Their wages and benefits should not be the subject of junk fees, like getting more leg room on a flight. Second, when an employee mistakenly fills the glass you had the last 30% of your cider with water, their should be an adjustment to the customers bill. Third, when a customer asks for a plain biscuit to go with their leftovers and you sell a biscuit with ham for $3/each, how much more trouble did it make for you to charge $6 for an unadorned biscuit. Three stars representing average/above average. I'd do 3.5 if I could. Very good service and cool ambiance but if you don't love bacon then your menu choices are limited. Maybe that's their thing (in which case ignore this review) but if menu planning was up to me I'd tone it down a bit and reduce the number of meat on meat dishes. Again though, service was very good and our server made sure to accommodate a rare food allergy in our party. I'd go back but it wouldn't be my top choice in Vail Village. read more

I came here for dinner while staying in Vail to enjoy hiking for the summer. We were seated outside on the patio and the view of the river was beautiful! They had an interesting menu with good options and decent pricing. I will say that there aren't many vegetables on the menu (no sides) so something to keep in mind if you're trying to be veggie focused. I will say that the service to our table in particular was slow when the tables around us seemed to be getting attention. However I know they were busy so perhaps we were just being given time. This is one of the quintessential Vail necessities! A "rustic tavern" located near Gore Creek, Mountain Standard is quite the fancy dining spot for an intimate date night or large-scale family affair. The atmosphere is elegant but not overtly ostentatious, and there's a great view of the kitchen, complete with chefs that could be straight out of FX's "The Bear", whooping and hollering if you order some sort of special food item that I couldn't quite decipher. The items on the menu might seem simplistic from their condensed descriptions but they are presented in such a wholly original way, injected with a fresh creative spin that reflects the signature style of this restaurant. The Spinach n Artichoke Dip, for instance, is like nothing you've had anywhere else. The mocktails were refreshingly unique. The main entree's portions are the perfect size despite the trompe l'oeil illusory "objects may be larger than they appear" exhibition when first glancing at your plate, not to mention delicious. And I would personally suggest the Snickers Ice Cream Bar to really top it all off. Mountain Standard is definitely a 'Vail standard' in my book, just make sure to arrive early if you plan on going for dinner, as this place fills up rather fast, and for good reason! read more

The server told me they are on their 75th menu iteration in 7 years. That's awesome - and tells you a lot about their desire to perfect the offerings. The salads were more than standard - and showed they have amazing produce relationships providing them ingredients at the peak of freshness. The onion rings were fantastic and the short rib was complex - they put some hours in on the braise for certain. The peel and eat shrimp won't worth the mess and effort. You better get in front of that res if you plan on eating there on a weekend - as all of Vail is trying to get in. The wine list is highly cultivated and attractively priced. I travel a lot for work. I am thankful to have a job that allows me to travel and enjoy many fine dining restaurants. It's unusual that I leave a review when I have a good experience (I've probably left a few negative ones when I thought others needed to know). I always try to ask the locals where the best restaurants are when I can. An employee of the hotel I am staying at actually recommended Mountain Standard. I just don't even know how to describe how amazing this restaurant was. 1. The food was over the top good. Comfort foods, classic american. Everything on the menu looked so good I had to try a lot of things. The pimento cheese topped with bacon jam....wow. If you're a cheese lover this is a can't miss for you (and if you like bacon you'll think you wnet to heaven). If you think a wedge salad can't be better than the other 30 you've had at other amazing restaurants....you're wrong. The Waygu steak was over the top. I'm probably going back tomorrow night because I didn't get to try some of the other dishes that are my go-to's at other places. 2. The drinks are on point. At restaurants I'm typically a bourbon guy. I love an old fashioned. I love nice bourbons. Their old fashioned was perfection. Very nice selection of bourbons. I will also point out that I was super impressed with their scotch selection. I go to a lot of nice bars with 14 year Balvenie. It's very rare that I see a 21 year Balvenie. If you like clear liquors I can't help you. I saw Titos and know that's decent but I'm guessing the selection of those have equally as preferable options to the scotches and bourbons....I'm the kind of guy that likes his classics but I like them to be amazing...this was certainly the right bar for me. Also there was a PRETTY nice wine selection....not like a book of wines but a good selection of basic wines that anyone would like if you're in the mood for wine. 3. The people were so nice and accomodating without being negative. As I travel alone a good bit I enjoy sitting at the bar and people watching, meeting other people sitting up there. Usually they push you along at the hostess stand and tell you to stand until you can grab a seat from someone getting up. Here they will actually put you in line and reserve you a seat at the bar. This was great. I could just stand back and have a drink to chill until they called me over to my seat. I thought that this was a great service. You don't see it much. 4. The atmosphere was very welcoming. As a visitor you don't always know how you should dress going to nicer restaurants. There were guys in cuffed shirts and some in t-shirts. It was very laid back but in a classy sort of way. Such a great mix of people. That also makes me want to mention that I thought what you get for your money at this restaurant was pretty good too! When I look at the cost of dining at a restaurant I don't just look at the cost of the food and drinks but I also look at what the experience is worth. This was a great experience. With all this said, the star of the show is definitely the food! Hands down the best chili I've ever had in my life. The entree was easily just as good. Such a creative menu, with very delicious additions to make a simple dish into a masterpiece. Brad, the server that took care of me was a mastermind with the menu. MENU MISREPRESENTATION! We came in for the "Whole Rainbow Trout" which is listed on their menu as "family style" for $75. We were told that it could feed a family of 4. We were only 2 people, and when the dish arrived, it was a big dish full of greens, we had to search for the fish under the leaves. Turns out it was 1 skinny little filet of trout, instead of the "Whole Rainbow Trout" that is on the menu. We called the manager over, and he says that's how it is, and asked what we wanted. We said we wanted the other half of the trout, since they didn't serve the whole trout. He said he couldn't do that, but could do something with the check. He brings us a check with $10 deducted, so now we are charged $65 for a skinny filet of trout! He tried to blame us for the "confusion" but I said there is no confusion--you are misrepresenting the facts on your menu. One of the upscale restaurants in Vail. Our experience here was great. The server was very helpful with giving us her favorites and recommended some options that were also really good. Came here with two others and was instantly seated. With Covid several restaurants in Colorado are open for patio dining and carry out only, so we were pleased to see that in door dining was available. The restaurant has a quaint feel. Dim lighting and a great view into the kitchen to see the masterminds put our meals together. The only downside to eating here is trying to find parking close enough to the restaurant. Wow, definitely one of the best meals during our ski trip in Colorado. It's somewhat hard to find, because the entrance is actually located down by the river. Loved all the dishes here, including the smoked angus short rib (more of an entree than an appetizer), the grilled carrot salad, and the warm pimento cheese. The short rib was literally fall off the bone. Apparently it's smoked for hours beforehand. Really hearty and rich, great after working out on the slopes. The salad was also a great combination of ingredients (kale, sunflower seeds, vinaigrette) and was filling without feeling too healthy if you know what I mean.
