The bartender with the ponytail (and mustache) was dismissive and rude, and the older bald bartender was no better. When I simply asked if my martini came with olives, I was met with a condescending response: "All you have to do is ask." Followed by him, literally throwing the stick of olives in my martini slashing in my cocktail. Yes I was shocked. I've never had this happen to me in my life. The attitude felt arrogant and unwelcoming, almost as if they were acting like sophisticated locals and treating guests like clueless tourists. First impressions matter, and this kind of behavior reflects poorly on an otherwise great restaurant. My husband looked at the menu online of this fancy vail restaurant and thought the menu just looked too pretentious - "Santa Maria tri-tip", "Loch Duart salmon" and more, basically too much fancy sounding stuff that regular people would need to google to see what it actually is. That may have lowered our expectations a bit, but we decided to go anyway! Well, everything we ordered turned out to be fantastic and living up to its fancy descriptions. The ambiance was very nice and very upbeat. The staff was super friendly, with just the right amount of attention given to us. We loved the Crispy Whole Rainbow Trout Bo Ssam. The trout was fried and very tasty, with the accompaniments all great as well. It was also served with a piece of maple fried cornbread that was to die for in itself. We also very much enjoyed the Corned Pork Shank and Open Blue Cobia. For starters we had Rotisserie Chicken Salad which was another 5 star dish, and the Bacon Wrapped Scallops. The wine and liquor selections seemed just right. Then the prices were not exorbitant at all and in the end we felt could have been a lot more for this quality of restaurant in the heart of Vail Village. We would recommend this to all and will definitely come here again if we return to Vail. Also, I had a sip of old fashioned here and it was the best!!! This was a really cute spot for lunch! The restaurant is like half outside and is right in front of the creek so we had a nice view while eating. The interior itself is pretty nice and feels cozy; it definitely matches the upmarket New-American gastropub description. We shared the bone marrow beef carpaccio and thought it was delicious! The bone marrow slathered on the toast and topped with the carpaccio was a perfect bite. The beef carpaccio was also one of the better beef carpaccios I've had. For my main I got the shrimp tamales. They weren't really tamales; they were shrimp on top of masa which was interesting, I had expected shrimp filling inside of a tamale. I thought they were still pretty good though. I also had a cucumber and mint Yerba mate drink with my meal which was really yummy for those that love Yerba mate. I haven't seen Yerba mate offered at a restaurant before so it was a pleasant surprise. Service was nice, friendly, and attentive. To my surprise, she didn't know but said she would find out for me. Then she totally forgot about it. I had to remind her. 2. This one really did me in. After the salad and before the main courses came, there were small pieces of food scraps on the table. I asked her to clean it and to my surprise, she used the napkin and swept it onto the floor....urgggggghhh.... We decided to talk to the manager after our meal. I'm thankful the manager acknowledged that they missed the boat. She wanted to make it up to me, and since I booked a dinner at Sweet Basil the next day, she said she would let the manager there know. I did receive a great service at Sweet Basil the next day , so thanks to the manager here. I have a mixed feeling about this restaurant. I think they want to act like they are high-end and yet casual establishment. But besides the quality of service, I think the quality of the food needs improvement too. Nothing wrong with how it's cooke, but the choice of ingredients is questionable. For example, for the Santa Maria tri tip with scalloped potato I had. Everything here was delicious. Definitely a place to get three courses as the entrees were a bit of the smaller end. We started with the popcorn shrimp and throughly enjoyed it! We split a simple greens salad and then ordered the stuffed shells with the seafood and the tri tip. The stuffed shells were just shells with lemon ricotta, and the seafood was on the outside of them sitting in the squid ink sauce. The tri tip was very yummy! Meat was super tender! I was looking back at photos and notes I made from prior trips to Vail and the food seemed to be of better quality and consistency. The service is ok and reasonably attentive but I wouldn't describe it as friendly. The chicken sandwich was interesting but lacking real character given all the ingredients they were inserting to make it a creative and interesting experience. It was better on prior visits. The drinks were inconsistent depending on the bartender which isn't acceptable for a higher brow venue. The whiskey bacon onion soup was tasty but lacking sufficient broth and onions. It was filled with more bread than broth it seemed. It was hearty, but made a better photo than "meal." The onion rings and the zesty ketchup were definitely the winners among the crowd of options. My last comment is that if you have any allergies, this isn't the place for you. The person who joined me essentially couldn't eat anything but a hamburger with nothing on it but lettuce, ketchup, and pickles. Just about everything has gluten, egg or dairy and even the oil is apparently peanut so if you have a nut allergy, you can't have the fries. Just a tip in case you go there expecting them to be able to work around any issues. I'd suggest it's fine for an afternoon cocktail or a snack, but the food photographs better than it tastes. My first few time or two to Mountain Standard were so mid that I almost stopped giving it a try. It's one of my mother in law's favorite places for a semi-casual option in Vail so we popped in for a late lunch. We didn't have a reservation and the hostess wasn't very happy to seat us. We were going to leave, but our server insisted it was fine. We were a table of 5. I believe our server's name was Marilyn and she was absolutely incredible. She was quick and answered so many questions. We got a little bit of everything on the menu: cocktails, mocktails, children's food, appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts. Everything was so good. They've really upped their game. I always like an interesting cocktail with a fun name, my older table mates enjoyed their spicy margaritas. I was particularly impressed by the pork shank and a runner up was the spaghetti fra diavolo. I've been dreaming of the homemade snickers ice cream bar ever since though. This used to be one of our favorite Vail spots, but no longer. Food quality and service were fine. The ambience was atrocious for lunch today. First, we were sat near the busy entrance. Then, a group of unattended ten year old boys was placed at the adjacent booth. They were incredibly loud and disruptive as they noshed on mac-n-cheese and grilled cheese sammies, in between yelling and jumping around. The unaccompanied kids turned our dining experience into the equivalent of Chuck E. Cheese. Of course, later, we found out the inconsiderate parents group connected with the children was several tables away enjoying a pleasant uninterrupted meal and boozing it up, oblivious to their kid's chaos. Never once did the parents check on the kids or admonish them to use "inside voices". I blame these selfish parents, but also the restaurant. We fully support family friendly establishments. However, today, these kids were way out of control and other tables and staff also noticed, but complaints were unanswered. We suggest that management implement a policy of not seating unaccompanied minors. It's too late for us, I don't see how this spot can remain in our Vail top five after today...calling it Mountain Sub-Standard, from now on, I guess. read more

Equally delicious was the Buttermilk Sea Salt Biscuit accompanied by ham and pepper jelly. Get a cocktail (might I recommend the "I am Ron Burgundy?") or a glass of chardonnay while you browse the menu, which I am told is more extensive for lunch than dinner. We had to ask several times for the pimento cheese app because they kept forgetting about it. We ordered our main meals very quickly after that and didn't get our food until 955 pm. No one came to notify us that the kitchen was backed up or anything. We hardly had anyone come by the whole dinner. We ordered extra dirty martinis and they were just plain martinis with olives in them. No olive flavor at all. My beef was extremely fatty. We were able to get in for a party of 2 at 5pm without a reservation, although I recommend making a reservation (they typically book out of reservations as soon as they come online 30 days ahead of time). The restaurant is dim light, lively, and bustling. We were seated next to the window overlooking the creek running through Vail Village. Our server was very social and attentive, striking up conversation while continually checking on our table. * Unpearable: The best pear drink we've had, wow this was so good, cannot say it enough, have to try it! Light, refreshing, a little tart, a little sweet, peary, perfect! * Grilled Sea Scallops: Can't describe the flavors, but it was comforting and sophisticated. Our favorite dish, and the sea scallops were cooked perfectly. * Pork Cheek Poutine: Not your typical poutine, this tastes much better! The potato is more of a hash brown at the base, with pork, cheese curds, and the sauce cooked on top. The hash brown was crispy, and better than any poutine I've had in Canada! * Kampachi Crudo: The fish tasted fresh, there was no fishy, salty taste to it. The flavors complemented it nicely, with a little bit of citrus too. * Rotisserie Chicken Salad: Delicious! They load it with chicken that is flavorful and juicy. Seriously, they don't skimp on the chicken in this dish. The dressing is less fishy than a Caesar salad, and the ingredients complement one another. * Glazed Mahi Mahi: It was good, but compared to other dishes our least favorite. It was missing a crisp to the cooked fish, but the sushi rice tots were crispy, warm, soft on the inside, and some of the best we've had. * 'Standard' Slice of Blueberry Pie: Anything but standard, the best slice I've ever had! Small wild berries, and it's not overly sweet, and kinda light. I would have ordered 10 of these. Ruined blueberry pie for me. * Snickers Ice Cream Bar: Get the blueberry pie. Normally a chocolate guy, and nothing wrong with it, but it's about what you'd expect, and the pie is better in my opinion. Overall, the food, service, and setting was amazing!
