This was mine and my husband's first time here at MS. We were greeted and seated right away for we had reservations. It was a Friday night and it was definitely busy! Service was okay -- 3/5 but probably because it was a busy night. As for the wait on the food, it wasn't a super long wait. I would say this restaurant is dressy casual. You can def pass wearing a nicer shirt or even sweatshirt. It gives off BBQ vibes in the restaurant. Food: Pepper NY Strip 3.7/5 -- I would recommend this to those who like their meat charred. Personally, I didn't enjoy the steak. It was too charred and crusty for my liking. It also only came with five strips of steak. Other than that -- we enjoyed the potatoes, corn, and the sauce! Short Rib 4.8/5 -- This was very well done! We enjoyed everything that paired with this short rib -- to the rice and shishito peppers. Only thing was it was charred but the sauce def made it more moist. Strawberry Rhubarb Shortcake 4/5 -- it wasn't bad but it wasn't also SO good. read more

The food was excellent and our waiter was fantastic - attentive, friendly, and professional. Unfortunately, the experience was seriously dampened by the bartenders. The bartender with the ponytail (and mustache) was dismissive and rude, and the older bald bartender was no better. When I simply asked if my martini came with olives, I was met with a condescending response: "All you have to do is ask." Followed by him, literally throwing the stick of olives in my martini slashing in my cocktail. Yes I was shocked. I've never had this happen to me in my life. The attitude felt arrogant and unwelcoming, almost as if they were acting like sophisticated locals and treating guests like clueless tourists. First impressions matter, and this kind of behavior reflects poorly on an otherwise great restaurant. If it weren't for those two behind the bar, this place would easily be a seven-star experience. read more

My husband looked at the menu online of this fancy vail restaurant and thought the menu just looked too pretentious - "Santa Maria tri-tip", "Loch Duart salmon" and more, basically too much fancy sounding stuff that regular people would need to google to see what it actually is. That may have lowered our expectations a bit, but we decided to go anyway! Well, everything we ordered turned out to be fantastic and living up to its fancy descriptions. The ambiance was very nice and very upbeat. The staff was super friendly, with just the right amount of attention given to us. We loved the Crispy Whole Rainbow Trout Bo Ssam. The trout was fried and very tasty, with the accompaniments all great as well. It was also served with a piece of maple fried cornbread that was to die for in itself. We also very much enjoyed the Corned Pork Shank and Open Blue Cobia. For starters we had Rotisserie Chicken Salad which was another 5 star dish, and the Bacon Wrapped Scallops. The wine and liquor selections seemed just right. Then the prices were not exorbitant at all and in the end we felt could have been a lot more for this quality of restaurant in the heart of Vail Village. We would recommend this to all and will definitely come here again if we return to Vail. Also, I had a sip of old fashioned here and it was the best!!! I have tried a sip of so many old fashioned whenever anyone at my table ordered it but never liked it but this was the only old fashioned I have ever liked and would have ordered if I had not had a glass of Cab already!! Sometimes, you have to accept the gap between expectation and reality. This is one of those times, so it's a bit disappointing. In the picturesque Vail, where everything is pretty and carefully manicured, I had high hope about this restaurant, especially its Sweet Basil's sister restaurant. Everything started it well until it took a wrong turn on the service. 1. I was interested knowing one of the ingredients from the bone marrow & wagyu capaccio I ordered. To my surprise, she didn't know but said she would find out for me. Then she totally forgot about it. I had to remind her. 2. This one really did me in. After the salad and before the main courses came, there were small pieces of food scraps on the table. I asked her to clean it and to my surprise, she used the napkin and swept it onto the floor....urgggggghhh.... We decided to talk to the manager after our meal. I'm thankful the manager acknowledged that they missed the boat. She wanted to make it up to me, and since I booked a dinner at Sweet Basil the next day, she said she would let the manager there know. I did receive a great service at Sweet Basil the next day , so thanks to the manager here. I have a mixed feeling about this restaurant. I think they want to act like they are high-end and yet casual establishment. But besides the quality of service, I think the quality of the food needs improvement too. Nothing wrong with how it's cooke, but the choice of ingredients is questionable. For example, for the Santa Maria tri tip with scalloped potato I had. First, the tri-tip is not a high-end meet. 2nd, there are only 4-5 pieces of meat on my plate. They charge $48 for this dish! read more

This was a really cute spot for lunch! The restaurant is like half outside and is right in front of the creek so we had a nice view while eating. The interior itself is pretty nice and feels cozy; it definitely matches the upmarket New-American gastropub description. We shared the bone marrow beef carpaccio and thought it was delicious! The bone marrow slathered on the toast and topped with the carpaccio was a perfect bite. The beef carpaccio was also one of the better beef carpaccios I've had. For my main I got the shrimp tamales. They weren't really tamales; they were shrimp on top of masa which was interesting, I had expected shrimp filling inside of a tamale. I thought they were still pretty good though. I also had a cucumber and mint Yerba mate drink with my meal which was really yummy for those that love Yerba mate. I haven't seen Yerba mate offered at a restaurant before so it was a pleasant surprise. Service was nice, friendly, and attentive. I definitely would like to come back for dinner and try what they have for dinner! read more

To say we were disappointed is an understatement. We came to this establishment on a recommendation. The pimento cheese appetizer was just OK. We ordered the burger after the waiter recommended it. The burger looked promising until we cut into it. It was blue to rare in temp. I attempted to eat my 1/2 but my husband couldn't on his 1/2. We did bring the temperature of the meat to the waiter's attention for nothing to be done. We paid $100 for an inedible burger, OK appetizer and 2 teas that were never refilled. Why has no one told me about mountain standard?!? Would I drive to Denver for the pimento cheese and biscuits alone? YES. We came during the In Between menu (between lunch and dinner) so we had limited options, but everyone was insane, so didn't feel like we missed out at alll. The biscuits have jam and prosciutto on them and flaky salt. They were soo fluffy and buttery. I'm sad we only ordered two! The wedge had the best toppings ever with your not-so-standard herb dressing. The pimento cheese is a crowd favorite per our server and I can absolutely see why. Name one thing better than warm pimento cheese with bacon jam on crusty sourdough??? Nothing. Coming back to try everything else. If you're in vail, definitely make a reservation because they're busy! read more

Everything here was delicious. Definitely a place to get three courses as the entrees were a bit of the smaller end. We started with the popcorn shrimp and throughly enjoyed it! We split a simple greens salad and then ordered the stuffed shells with the seafood and the tri tip. The stuffed shells were just shells with lemon ricotta, and the seafood was on the outside of them sitting in the squid ink sauce. The tri tip was very yummy! Meat was super tender! Our server was quick and attentive and the manager also stopped by to ensure we enjoyed our food! We got seated in the outdoor patio even without a reservation and it was so peaceful. Service was great! Ambiance was great! Food was uneatable! I ordered a fish that was extremely salty and I couldn't swallow it! They changed to a chicken that was so spicy but fresh! Benjamin Netanyahu himself portioned the steak. It came out as 6 pre cut bitesize pieces, the thing should've come out with a kid cuisine logo. They should've called it the "lil tikes babys first steak". There was also this dish on the side that had the pure intention to maim, every thing about it was there with evil intentions. All in all great restaurant would recommend. read more

Mt. Standard is not to be confused with Mt. Excellence. The menu is extremely limited, With only 5 entrees. Asking for additions such as fresh onions or tomatoes is met with apologies.. The drinks are carefully measured and free pours non existent. The food is over hyped. I will say the staff is excellent, cannot not be kinder. A little "fluff" description on the menu. Certainly adequate, but falls short if excellent. That said, place to be seen. More hype than solid good stuff. read more

We came here because of the ratings and boy are they wrong. I was looking back at photos and notes I made from prior trips to Vail and the food seemed to be of better quality and consistency. The service is ok and reasonably attentive but I wouldn't describe it as friendly. The chicken sandwich was interesting but lacking real character given all the ingredients they were inserting to make it a creative and interesting experience. It was better on prior visits. The drinks were inconsistent depending on the bartender which isn't acceptable for a higher brow venue. The whiskey bacon onion soup was tasty but lacking sufficient broth and onions. It was filled with more bread than broth it seemed. It was hearty, but made a better photo than "meal." The onion rings and the zesty ketchup were definitely the winners among the crowd of options. My last comment is that if you have any allergies, this isn't the place for you. The person who joined me essentially couldn't eat anything but a hamburger with nothing on it but lettuce, ketchup, and pickles. Just about everything has gluten, egg or dairy and even the oil is apparently peanut so if you have a nut allergy, you can't have the fries. Just a tip in case you go there expecting them to be able to work around any issues. I'd suggest it's fine for an afternoon cocktail or a snack, but the food photographs better than it tastes. This is unfortunate given that it definitely was better in the first months after it opened. Note that I tried it twice this trip and both experiences were the same. read more

My first few time or two to Mountain Standard were so mid that I almost stopped giving it a try. It's one of my mother in law's favorite places for a semi-casual option in Vail so we popped in for a late lunch. We didn't have a reservation and the hostess wasn't very happy to seat us. We were going to leave, but our server insisted it was fine. We were a table of 5. I believe our server's name was Marilyn and she was absolutely incredible. She was quick and answered so many questions. We got a little bit of everything on the menu: cocktails, mocktails, children's food, appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts. Everything was so good. They've really upped their game. I always like an interesting cocktail with a fun name, my older table mates enjoyed their spicy margaritas. I was particularly impressed by the pork shank and a runner up was the spaghetti fra diavolo. I've been dreaming of the homemade snickers ice cream bar ever since though. I can't believe how good it was. read more

This used to be one of our favorite Vail spots, but no longer. Food quality and service were fine. The ambience was atrocious for lunch today. First, we were sat near the busy entrance. Then, a group of unattended ten year old boys was placed at the adjacent booth. They were incredibly loud and disruptive as they noshed on mac-n-cheese and grilled cheese sammies, in between yelling and jumping around. The unaccompanied kids turned our dining experience into the equivalent of Chuck E. Cheese. Of course, later, we found out the inconsiderate parents group connected with the children was several tables away enjoying a pleasant uninterrupted meal and boozing it up, oblivious to their kid's chaos. Never once did the parents check on the kids or admonish them to use "inside voices". I blame these selfish parents, but also the restaurant. We fully support family friendly establishments. However, today, these kids were way out of control and other tables and staff also noticed, but complaints were unanswered. We suggest that management implement a policy of not seating unaccompanied minors. It's too late for us, I don't see how this spot can remain in our Vail top five after today...calling it Mountain Sub-Standard, from now on, I guess. read more

Absolutely fantastic food! We loved the Warm Pimento Cheese with cider bacon jam, pickled celery salad and grilled bread. Equally delicious was the Buttermilk Sea Salt Biscuit accompanied by ham and pepper jelly. For our entrees, we had Steelhead Trout and a NY Strip, both of which were excellent and paired well with their wines on offer. The only negative is that it was super loud but perhaps that was due to the particular group of patrons the night we were there. All in all, a solid dinner spot in Vail! read more

This place takes the cake for Vail Restaurants in my opinion. We had a total of 4 nights and lunches mixed within and we made dang sure this was our last restaurant of the trip, making it our second time visiting this trip. Let's dive right in!! Food: OH MAN! The pimento cheese appetizer is seriously the best pimento cheese dish I've ever had. We ordered 2 of them the second and final dinner. The burgers are amazing, the spicy chicken sandwich is to die for. But the hands down best meal, is the pork shank. We could not get enough of this meal. We ordered two and had one for breakfast this morning. I was so upset I was so excited I didn't get a picture but there are plenty to view on Yelp! This place is a must, and while I don't think the menu can do any wrong, the pork shank steals the show! read more

Not a cheap lunch, but a fabulous one, indeed. Get a cocktail (might I recommend the "I am Ron Burgundy?") or a glass of chardonnay while you browse the menu, which I am told is more extensive for lunch than dinner. Definitely order the onion rings, which have a thick coating and spicy kick in the batter. I had the most dainty and flavorful lamb gyro, complete with fresh dill and mint in the pita. Just enough food for a midday meal. Note that if you sit on the patio you get great views of the stream nearby, as well as doggos enjoying the water. read more

We had a reservation for 815 pm. As soon as we were sat we asked for the pimento cheese appetizer and the bread rolls. We had to ask several times for the pimento cheese app because they kept forgetting about it. We ordered our main meals very quickly after that and didn't get our food until 955 pm. No one came to notify us that the kitchen was backed up or anything. We hardly had anyone come by the whole dinner. We ordered extra dirty martinis and they were just plain martinis with olives in them. No olive flavor at all. My beef was extremely fatty. Multiple people ordered it at our table and we all couldn't eat it. The $90 pork dish was all about presentation but lacked any flavor. Overall not the best experience. read more

We were able to get in for a party of 2 at 5pm without a reservation, although I recommend making a reservation (they typically book out of reservations as soon as they come online 30 days ahead of time). The restaurant is dim light, lively, and bustling. We were seated next to the window overlooking the creek running through Vail Village. Our server was very social and attentive, striking up conversation while continually checking on our table. * Unpearable: The best pear drink we've had, wow this was so good, cannot say it enough, have to try it! Light, refreshing, a little tart, a little sweet, peary, perfect! * Grilled Sea Scallops: Can't describe the flavors, but it was comforting and sophisticated. Our favorite dish, and the sea scallops were cooked perfectly. * Pork Cheek Poutine: Not your typical poutine, this tastes much better! The potato is more of a hash brown at the base, with pork, cheese curds, and the sauce cooked on top. The hash brown was crispy, and better than any poutine I've had in Canada! * Kampachi Crudo: The fish tasted fresh, there was no fishy, salty taste to it. The flavors complemented it nicely, with a little bit of citrus too. * Rotisserie Chicken Salad: Delicious! They load it with chicken that is flavorful and juicy. Seriously, they don't skimp on the chicken in this dish. The dressing is less fishy than a Caesar salad, and the ingredients complement one another. * Glazed Mahi Mahi: It was good, but compared to other dishes our least favorite. It was missing a crisp to the cooked fish, but the sushi rice tots were crispy, warm, soft on the inside, and some of the best we've had. * 'Standard' Slice of Blueberry Pie: Anything but standard, the best slice I've ever had! Small wild berries, and it's not overly sweet, and kinda light. I would have ordered 10 of these. Ruined blueberry pie for me. * Snickers Ice Cream Bar: Get the blueberry pie. Normally a chocolate guy, and nothing wrong with it, but it's about what you'd expect, and the pie is better in my opinion. Overall, the food, service, and setting was amazing! A great experience and we will be back if we're in Vail again. read more
