Man oh man I really wanted to like this place. It has such a great location and the interior has an amazing layout but it was just ok.

I really wanted this place to be good. For all the ethnic food in the Fort Greene area, there is a dearth of quality East Asian cuisine. Also, this location has seen high turnover, and I'd really like it to succeed. That said, the food was mediocre, only semi-authentic, and bloody expensive. On top of all that, service was odd (not rude, but not exactly warm and welcoming) and they charged us for a drink that they had previously told us they were out of, then didn't even apologize for it after we pointed it out when reviewing the bill. To add some color here, the beef pho is $15 and rather small. You could get one three times the size in Chinatown for $9. Moreover, while the broth was OK, the meat was very sparse, and also sliced incorrectly (small bricks instead of razor thin on a meat slicer). I know BK real estate is expensive, but this was a very small portion for pho even if it had been $10 rather than $15. Left feeling still a bit hungry and dissatisfied. Giving them two stars rather than one since hopefully this is a case of a new restaurant working out the kinks. The drinks (the ones they actually served us) were pretty good. read more

I wanted to like this place because there is no good Vietnamese food in Fort Greene, but was pretty disappointed. Service was fine I guess, but weirdly curt considering that there were only two other customers there when we arrived. We ordered crispy vegetable spring rolls, which were good. But the chicken pho was extremely bland and barely contained any chicken. I'm talking maybe 1oz, if that. The base broth was essentially water. A quick google search of "how to make pho" could probably help a bit here. It's too bad, because its a cool space, but seems poorly managed and food is lacking flavor. read more

Chased out of South Village, like so many people, by skyrocketing rents (a much more expensive restaurant now in its place), Mekong kept its pretty tasty food and corner entrance constant. Pho was tame and simple (and the portion small), beef tartar spicy and quite memorable, and spring rolls delicious. NO decent draft beers, unfortunately. read more

One of my favorite's in Fort Greene. The food is delicious and the margarita happy hours are one of the best kept secrets in Brooklyn. Try the filet mignon au beurre, crispy spring rolls on vermicelli and Mekong street noodles with chicken. If you're vegetarian, the iron pot lemongrass curry is excellent. read more

This unpretentious but stylish spot is turning into our favorite neighborhood meal. The food is consistently terrific (and reasonably priced) with a pho that can hold its own with the best of Chinatown or Sunset Park. Other standouts are the crispy spring rolls (which are offered as a happy hour item) and the mouth-watering entree of grilled and diced filet mignon on a watercress base. Great margaritas, too. Chill ambience with authentic southeast Asian decor touches that don't descend into theme-restaurant kitsch. read more

Service needs overhaul: Walked in and no staff present for five minutes despite customers inside. Served drink in dirty glass and when I asked for clean glass, waiter poured into new one but never said anything. Needs to get more staff and some etiquette training. I wasn't expecting to find good, authentic Viet food in Fort Greene, but man this was probably one of the worst dinners I've ever had. We got the fried chicken, beef pho, and the spring roll vermicelli. Fried chicken was crispy but bland. Pho was terrible, the broth wasn't even broth as much as it was warm water and the meat was shredded with random grill marks(??) The vermicelli sauce was straight up weird, like diluted siracha with some vinegar. The spring rolls were crispy but dry and again, had absolutely no flavor to them. We were regulars when MeKong was in Manhattan, but very disappointed with our first experience in Clinton Hill. Place was empty albeit for a few tables, and the hostess sat us right on top of another party, so we opted for the bar. Humid night, no apparent AC, and warm draft beer for starters . Calamari app was very good but the portion was extremely small- it's presented in a bowl that's 2/3 lettuce with the calamari on top, so deceiving. The Chicken Pho dish had barely any chicken, and the Roast Pork Vermicelli had barely any pork. Both overpriced for what they were. Food came out quickly and out of order. Vegetarian Pho was fantastic and I'm not even vegetarian. Pork chops were really great as well. Service was quick and anticipated our needs well without being over bearing. The ambience was nice, and although the music was a bit loud for my tastes there is a bar there so I guess I can't really complain. I have consistently received huge disappointments, both by pick-up, delivery and uninterested staff. I am happy to give specific details but at this point, it really doesn't matter. This place is great, and just what the neighborhood needs. The pho is really fresh...generally all the ingredients are all fresh, and I've eaten here A LOT since it's a couple of blocks away. It's never packed -- a drawback for people looking for a lot of "buzz." But this does mean you can actually hear your dining partners talk. Wanted to like this place since I live two blocks away but it's most definitely the most over priced and poorly made banh mi I have ever had. The bread is complete wrong - way too big and not toasted. Too much bread with small fillings. I opened my sandwich in disbelief multiples times in mid-chew to see if any of the regular ingredients were missing. But they were all there in Lilliputian portions sandwiched in a giant loaf of generic grocery bought bread. I may go back to try an actual dish. Stay tuned. read more

Never reviewed on yelp before but SO happy about this addition to the neighborhood. With new restaurants opening daily in Ft. Greene, you'd think it wouldn't have taken so long for someone to try Vietnamese. The folks here are very friendly and the food was fresh and delicious. We enjoyed the summer rolls, chicken salad, and beef with rice paper. I hope that whatever kinks other reviewers have found get ironed out and this place will stick around for the longhaul! read more

I'm writing this review because I'm torn. The food at MeKong was pretty tasty. I had the chicken Pho and quite enjoyed the flavor. The other menu items also sounded yummy. My low rating stems from their terrible decision to round the bill. This is the first time I've experienced "rounding" on a bill, so I had to look it up to see if it this was an atypical business practice or the new normal. I asked the waitress if she could explain the extra charge on my bill labeled as "rounding", and she said that she wasn't sure what it was and would go check. She didn't return after 10 minutes, so I assumed she wasn't actually checking, so I left. It was only a few cents, so I wasn't enraged just curious to learn the logic behind it. After reading some articles about the practice, it seems that some restaurants do it to speed up the change-making process. This small restaurant did indeed have slow service, but I suspect it wasn't because servers were overwhelmed by counting coins. I can't imagine that many sit down restaurants deal with many cash transactions, nevertheless MeKong BK charges a rounding fee. I know that Chipotle was busted for doing this a few years ago and started to round down in favor of the customer, which seems to be the most obvious answer, but for some reason customers are being charged an extra fee for nothing. While it's only a few cents, it's definitely the principle of the matter. It's a shame that I probably won't return to this new restaurant in the neighborhood. MeKong, let me know if you decide to change this policy, and I'll be sure to come back and try the beef bone broth. read more
