Really cute restaurant but I found the food just okay. The spring rolls tasted overwhelmingly of mint and they were really skimpy with the shrimp (annoying given we paid extra for that). The beef pho was average, like it'll satisfy a craving but didn't stand out. Pork chops were yummy however, I liked the flavor. My family of 6 decided on this restaurant for Father's Day with my 85 yr old dad. The place was empty and they refused to seat us near a front window where it was cool and a little brighter and insisted we sit in the back near the kitchen and bathroom where it was hot and dingy. Manager said he's "expecting people"(even though they don't accept reservations) My fam was so insulted but we were with our elderly dad... so we tried not to argue. They never smiled. Waiter spilled ice on my dtr and didn't even apologize/. He had the nerve to say "it's just ice and walked off. Never asked if we were enjoying the food or if we needed another drink. The restaurant stayed empty the entire time...WE WILL NEVER GO BACK. Been ordering Pho from Mekong BK for years after moving to the Clinton Hill neighborhood. Finally stopped by for pickup and was surprised by the interior space and how well set up they are. The staff was super friendly, and the place had a great vibe. Love everything I've gotten from here, from the wings, fresh summer rolls, and of course, the Pho. Mekong is a neighborhood favorite of mine. And with their extensive menu and very helpful staff, no matter the season I always find something that really hits the spot. In the winter, the Iron Pot Lemongrass Curry w/ Tofu is such delicious comfort food. In the warmer months, I like doing the Bun vermicelli w/ pork and Khanh Hoa Farmer's Egg Noodles as a one-two punch. You'll also notice that Mekong has one of the coolest interiors of any restaurant in the neighborhood. My original choice of seafood spup contained pork in the broth (many dishes did) sp my choices were limited. At the insistence of my friend and the server, i went with the chicken Phò. Ughhh.... it was lacking the signature flavors the dish is known for. The savory spices slowly cooked with chicken bone broth was missing. In my bowl, the liquid was reticent of a thin consomme with a hint of chicken flavored, more so by the Thai basil on the toppings plate. The chicken, shredded, was dry, overcooked, and unseasoned. My friend has been here many times and she enjoyed her selections. I might try drinks and another dish if I return, but I'm not so sure. read more

I was a long time regular at a Vietnamese restaurant in Houston called Mai's - since moving to NYC nearly 20 years ago I have hopped to run across a place as delicious. I found it last night in Mekong BK. We stared with the vegetarian spring rolls which were delicious, of course. They always are pretty much anywhere you go. It was my entree, the Iron Pot Lemongrass Curry with Bean Curd that utterly blew my mind. I don't even know what to say. Delicious, savory, spicy, satisfying... and that lemongrass flavor. It was utterly magnificent! The space inside was cozy with neighborhood vibes, and the place was nicely bustling and busy, but not overwhelmingly so. Our server was absolutely lovely and happily answered all of our questions and made suggestions. The only miss was the fact that she seemed to disappear after we got our food and we never saw her again. Another person seemed to take over our table and brought our check. Not terrible, but it's always odd when that happens! I will definitely make my way back to this spot! read more

I really like Mekong as a neighborhood restaurant and usually go here around once a month. They have some really good vegan options and their cocktails are really good and use Vietnamese liquors, which is unusual. The inside has good mood lighting and the space is open and there are always tables available. My main complaint is the fish tank. I hope they read this and add some items to give those poor fish a better life. The tank is completely empty, and they just float around with no enrichment whatsoever. It's hella depressing. Please invest like $20 and give these fish some stuff to do. read more

I did enjoy the lychee martini more than I expected to. The summer rolls were very bland though, so that was a bit sad. I was in the area and was craving a banh mi so I went to the one of the only two Vietnamese places nearby to try a new place. (The other one I already tried, 5ive spice tacos and banh mi) When I walked in, nobody asked me for a vaccine card and sat me down quickly. I don't know if it's because covid is not as prominent now or what- do what you will with that information. I looked at the menu and realized all the prices are Manhattan priced pretty much- a whopping 14 dollars for banh mi compared to 10 dollars at 5ive spice and 4-6 dollars in lower Brooklyn authentic Viet spots where I'm from. The pho was only 2 more dollars. One thing about this place that's different is that it offers more vegetarian options for a lot of people who can't eat meat which shows the locals of this neighborhood. I was pretty happy with my banh mi- the pate was not as moist/wet as the traditional banh mi I usually have which I actually prefer and the baguette they use is fresh and i was impressed by how my whole mouth hasn't gotten destroyed by this bread as usually when I eat banh mi my mouth is scraped so hard with the baguette texture. I could tell the meat was high quality and they used a good enough amount of vegetables where the sandwich isn't overflowed with carrots or other extra flavors which I really appreciated. Is it an expensive banh mi? Yes Is it a perfectly made banh mi? Yes All in all, I got my quick banh mi fix and would be open to trying the other dishes at this restaurant when I'm back in the area! read more

My experience here was pretty great! Nothing that I could complain about! The atmosphere was so cute and quaint even during these pandemic times. A friend and I ate dinner here and had a small two-person table all to ourselves, nestled along the side of the restaurant among the plants, spaced out from others. There was only a 3-4 minute wait before being seated. Then the service was so quick and everyone made sure to check on us regularly. I started with the crispy vegetable spring rolls and then ordered the crispy seitan as my entree with a Vietnamese iced coffee. Everything was so delicious. I've been meaning to try this place for a while since I love checking out the neighborhood Vietnamese and this has such lovely reviews. We went for dinner on one of the warmer weather days at the tail end of February, though admittedly overestimated how warm it would be. Though they do have outdoor dining, be forewarned that it's not heated. We were dressed well enough for an outdoor walk but not for a long time outdoor sit, so dinner got a bit chilly after a while -- the food made up for it, though. The inside looks very cute so I'd definitely hope to be back at a time when I feel safer about indoor dining again! Friend and I were feeling something light and fresh with the onset of spring around the corner, so bun -- the vermicelli -- was the right choice for both of us. I got the Ha Noi with grilled lemongrass chicken and she got the crispy spring rolls. They came with a generous heaping of meat and vegetables, and of course the classic sauce that I was all too happy to drench my bowl in. Seriously, I was impressed with the amount of chicken my bun came with -- they did not skimp to be sure and the ratio of meat to noodles was almost more than I needed, so I can't complain there. Portion was enough for a light dinner and a leftover lunch the next day. Pretty solid place to satisfy my Viet food craving. The sauce, especially, reminded me of what we'd have in various containers back at home made by my mom. Just watch out for the surprise bean sprouts -- that wasn't on the menu for my dish and that's one of the toppings I'm actually picky about (my light form childhood trauma comes in the shape of bean sprouts hidden in my mom's dishes), so they ended up in my empty sauce bowl instead. read more

The indoor dining space is a few steps down from the street and is not stroller or wheel chair friendly, so I hope they keep the outdoor seating post pandemic. The dining room is long and cozy and way back when had a tropical fish tank that was fun to watch. The food is stellar. I've had the spring rolls, the summer rolls, the salt and pepper calamari, the beef pho and the chicken pho, the pork chop, the banh mi. Everything is so. good. The flavors have the bright crisp greens, the tart lime, the warm toasted peanuts, the spicy jalapeno or sauces, the tang of fish sauce or smoky hoisin, the flaky fried batter, the long springy noodles, the crunchy bread. Everything I've had here is amazing. Staff are friendly, service is fast and friendly, prices are fair. Takeout orders are packed well to avoid soggy noodles, delivery was on time. I am really excited to have found this spot. You walk down into it, so it has a cozy sunken feeling. Tables are pretty close to one another, which is never idea but of course typical for NYC. For appetizer we had the Grilled Marinated Berkshire Pork Ribs, which I highly recommend. They were juicy and flavorful with just the right amount of sauce. Totally worth the mess you may deal with. The Chicken in Coconut Lemongrass Curry Broth with potatoes, fresh mushrooms, onions, served with vermicelli was also a winner. I ordered and subsequently decimated the sliced pork shop. The pork was super juicy; full of flavor and cooked perfectly - there was even a subtle char. The veggies that accompany the meat (some pickled, some fresh) afford the opportunity to make lettuce wraps... so I did just that. What a delightful and filling meal! I was really impressed. The food was fine, however, there is a $3 delivery fee. When my food arrived, the delivery man cursed at me - 'are you f*king serious' - for not tipping enough on top of the $3 delivery fee. As someone who orders out often, I'm a fair tipper, and assumed that some portion of the $3 delivery fee (in addition to my tip) would go to the delivery person... apparently not. I called to speak with the manager regarding this negative interaction, and was told to call back later. I replied that I would simply leave my thoughts on Yelp and was told 'ok'. That said, the reviews about POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE are true, which detracts from the overall food experience, no matter how delicious. With so many options to choose from in Fort Greene and beyond, I will likely order elsewhere going forward. The food: Fresh summer rolls $9 (2) Rating: 3/10 Although typically made with shrimp, shrimp was $2 extra... ok Summer rolls are one of my favorite Vietnamese treats and these were terrible. While eating here on a recent Saturday night, I was beside myself when I spotted Rosie Perez dining at a nearby table. For those of you who have zero idea who she is, do yourself a favor and find a way to stream Spike Lee's seminal film, 'Do the Right Thing.' In today's racially charged times, it seems more apropos than ever. And please don't tell me you have no idea who Spike Lee is: Yeah, yeah, but how was the food? Pork Spring Rolls with Mint & Lettuce for wrapping (4 to an order): These were pretty tasty, but for some inexplicable reason, they were served on top of the Lettuce Leaves you were meant to wrap them in. Not only that, but these Lettuce Leaves were wet, as if they had been washed, but not dried. So between that and the steam from the hot Spring Rolls, they were every bit as soggy as you'd imagine. Plus we had to request more Lettuce since there wasn't enough and that too, was wet. Iron Pot Lemongrass Chicken Curry with a 'Sour Kick': This one came with Calamari on the menu, so I appreciated the kitchen's willingness to swap it out for Chicken. It was also pretty tasty, but everything was cut really small and I longed for some texture. It was more spicy than sour, which I didn't mind, but I couldn't make out much Lemongrass. Ultimately, not worth $17. Beef Pho: I liked my first spoonful of this, which popped with star anise flavor, but then as I kept eating, I realized it was the only thing I could taste and that the broth was one-dimensional and in need of seasoning. Hubby also flashed back to this totally divey, yet delicious Vietnamese spot on Avenue U where we'd enjoyed our Pho accompanied by thinly sliced raw beef on the side that we added ourselves. The beef was already in the broth before this hit the table. A Word about Service: Our mains arrived before our Spring Rolls. Then, not two minutes later, the Spring Rolls arrived. This thoughtless pacing bugged me because I knew, especially since we were eating soup, at least one dish would get cold. At this price point, this shouldn't happen. I mentioned it to the server, who while very sweet, didn't really know how to respond. A Word about the Cocktails: I have enjoyed some complex, well-balanced cocktails lately and these weren't that. Hate to say it, but they were basic AF and for $12 at that. A Word about the Space: It's more roomy than it appears from the outside and is very inviting. Bottom line: This city is not exactly known for its Vietnamese cuisine, with the most satisfying that I've tried so far, being at dingy little places in Chinatown. I had been hoping this would prove to be that elusive Holy Grail combination of good Pho AND pleasant ambiance. Alas, the quest continues. ps Don't know how the aforementioned Ms. Perez felt about her meal, but I won't be back. Three stars 'cause I get this spot's convenient appeal for locals. I was told there is no table for one person, with one in front of me with no one waiting. Given the option of a street facing stool or the bar, I settled for the bar, next to a couple screaming at the top of their lungs and banging their hands on the bar. I ordered the Iron Pot Calamari Lemongrass Curry that promised "A curry unlike any other w/ a range of crunchy veggies, fresh herbs & a slightly lingering sour kick". This dish was listed in the menu posted at the entrance, at $17, while the menu inside listed only a chicken version, also for $17. The dish that arrived was more soggy than crunchy and on the small side. No trace of fresh herbs... When the bill came, the dish was priced at $19, a price difference not large enough for me to argue, but disappointing in principle. Great Vietnamese food that stands out is hard to come by, but MeKong is definitely a stand-out! Their menu is extensive, and has something for everyone. There's pho, banh mi's, salads, soups, noodle dishes, curries, vegetarian options - the works! The space is deceptively large, with a front bar and a huge back area with big booths perfect for larger parties. We started out with the crispy chicken wings, which came 5 to an order. Great flavor, perfectly fried. We also had the shrimp papaya salad, which had a kick to it, but wasn't overwhelmingly spicy. Lots of shrimp too! We also wanted to try the pho, but didn't want to do a bowl each, and they were nice enough to split up an order into two smaller bowls for us (so that's why the bowl looks tiny in my photos!). The classic beef broth was great, with a ton of brisket. Rich broth, just the way it's supposed to be. Lastly, we had the iron pot calamari lemongrass curry, which was definitely the most unique thing we saw on the menu. It was a slightly sour curry and definitely worth trying. Portion was on the smaller side, but great for sharing between two people. The only things I'll fault them for is that it didn't come with rice and we had to order separately, and that service was a little bit spotty when the place filled up. If you're used to hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese places, there may be some sticker shock ($14 for a banh mi, for instance). But the quality of food and ingredients (fresh every day!) is well worth it! read more

We ate here 2 days ago and the bill was $47 and I tipped $10. okay. 2 days later i receieve a notification from my bank asking "did you tip 40% at Mekong BK?" so aparently they went back to my receipt/bill and changed the tip to whatever they liked.
