I've tried this place once, and decided that La Val's is either probably not really for me, or I didn't exactly order the best thing on the menu. I have friends who are always talking about how much they love La Val's, but my impression upon eating here was more like going to a mashup of Pizza My Heart and Artichoke's Pizza and just not really being either one. The pizza portion was just definitely not large enough for me, as I need at least two huge slices of Artichoke's-sized pizza or half a whole standard-sized pizza to be full and satisfied, and the ingredients on the La Val's combo pizza I ordered for $5 didn't taste fresh or particularly awesome like that of Costco's pizza. Price was very meh as a result, and the entire restaurant was just kind of dim and depressing when I went - and this was over the summer in the late afternoon! Service was okay, and seating was plentiful, but my friend and I opted for the outside benches since it was a nice day. I'm on the fence about La Val's after seeing some of the photos of the pastas and mini pizzas, so I might give it another chance one of these days. For now, I'm not a huge fan. La Val's should either decrease the price of its single slices, or increase the slice size - that slice for $5 was definitely not worth the price! read more

Great location good indoor and outdoor seating. I ordered the combo pizza and wings. The crust on the pizza was amazing thin and crispy. fresh toppings. But I think the sauce needed flavor or they needed to add more sauce. The wings were bomb I have nothing to say about the spicy wings they were flavorful. We were in town for a concert and didn't want to pay $10 bucks for a hot dog. Somehow we ended up here. We ordered a small one topping pizza to go. Told it'll be 10 minutes. It was not that busy. 20 minutes go by and I'm like we gotta go where is our pizza. The girl who took our order said she'll check. The kitchen area is wide open so I watch her go ask they guys making the food. The look at her and shrug their shoulders and shake their head. Obviously they never started it. So she turns around and says about 5 more minutes. And I'm like oh honey don't you lie to me. So they finally start making it. Or so I thought, but they STILL put other orders before ours. Guess a small pizza and customer service is not something they care about. Finally our order comes out another 20 minutes later and all that wait was for a pizza that looked and tasted like paper. Ordered via Slice this evening at 545 with an ETA of 630. I texted around 645 to slice to figure out why the app said it was here but wasn't. The pizzeria is 1.5 miles from my hotel. They said the driver just left, after calling the pizzeria. Around 7, I called the pizzeria, they picked up and hung up the phone twice before answering a 3rd time. They then said the driver just left and would be here in a couple of minutes. At 730, I told slide to refund my money, as there was no call from driver and no pizza. Hungry kiddo screwed out of her dinner. So who knows if their pizza is good, their service is not. read more

Worst customer service I've ever had in a pizza place. I stopped in for a slice this evening on my way home from work. Just a single slice of pepperoni, nothing else, they already had one made, waiting to sell. They weren't all that busy but after 20 minutes, I still hadn't gotten my slice. The guy who came in after me got his order and left. I asked why it had been 20 minutes and where my slice was. The guy behind the counter said they hadn't even heated it up yet. I asked for my money back and he got mad, like I was the one who was being unreasonable. He practically threw the bill at me for my refund for them not getting my slice made, at all. This once great pizza joint has slide into the muck and mud... totally gone to the dogs. If you're on Northside and want pizza, you're better off walking all the way down to Southside instead. Came here for the first time. It's located on the Northside of the Berkeley Campus close to Urban Turban. Very nice atmosphere, surrounded by many other local restaurants. There was a wait when I arrived around lunch time on a Saturday, but it went by quick. I had a huge group with me, so it was nice that there was seating for large groups.They have a indoor seating area, and they your number will show up when your food is ready (super convienent!) I ordered a BBQ Chicken medium Sized pizza for about $14 (kind of on the pricer side). It was a decently sized pizza, fed my friend and I but I think it could even be split with 3. The ingredients tasted really fresh and there was a great balance of everything on the pizza. It wasn't too heavy on the BBQ sauce, actually I didn't taste very much but the pizza was still good. And that mozzarella cheese is super cheesy! You'll look ridiculous with cheese hanging out of your mouth. Definitely would recommend this place! read more

Had not been to this place for probably 40 years. As a kid, we use to go here all the time. The pizza does not appear to be the same recipe, but it was good. It used to have different cheeses on a cheese pie. We ordered online. Online, a small only allows for a gluten crust. When we got there, we were told you can't order regular crust online, but you can if you call in. Anyway, when we got the gluten free pizza it was flat, no crust. I told the guy it was not what I was expecting. He made us a new one in about 5 minutes and gave it to us for free. Great folks at this place. Pizza was really good. One word: Oily. My friend and I decided to come here for the first time since she lives half a block away. We had come on a Saturday afternoon and it was quite empty. It's spacious with ample seating indoors and if it's a good day, definitely opt for the picnic tables outside in the terrasse-like area. While service was minimal, the pizza came out fast since traffic was little to none. We had both ordered a pizza special: the California Combo and the Margarita, both of which were roughly $8-9 each after tax. The price is reasonable but the pizza quality is rather questionable. It seemed like both pizza sauces were simply olive oil - too much of it (?) The Cali Combo featured chicken that I found a little dry, despite the oil all over the pizza. The artichokes added another complexity in flavour and paired well with the onions and red peppers. The Margarita had basil, tomatoes and garlic on top. I'm not sure what I was supposed to taste, but other than the occasional tomato, all I tasted was the oil. We used a whole bunch of tissue paper to blot the pizza and even then, there was too much oil. It's definitely a quick eat right off campus but I wouldn't go back unless I was out of options. read more

Slow. Not vegetarian friendly. Food was... meh. I placed an order for delivery 11:45am on a weekday for two pasta dishes. Time frame says 45-60 minutes. 75 minutes later, they showed up. I shouldn't have pre-paid the tip, obviously, but I did. Oh well. The pasta was kind of bland. Adding crushed red peppers helped a little, but I am used to pesto being really zesty, and this was not. The bread was two really small pieces, and it was kind of spongy. The biggest issue is that one of the pasta orders had a piece of chicken in it, and we are vegetarian. My husband ate a bit of it, thinking it a piece of the eggplant, and then realized it was chicken. As a college student, I'm constantly searching for affordable, good-tasting food to fuel me through late nights working. La Val's delivers in all aspects: great tasting food at reasonable prices. Great place for students and even local residents. Food-wise, deserves a solid 5/5. I've ordered about 5-6 items on the menu consistently, and they consistently deliver on taste. My go-to's include the pesto pasta, chicken alfredo, chicken parmesan sub, and various slices of pizza. The single pizza slices are rather large, so typically 1 will suffice. The individual pizzas are decently sized, but they take significantly more time to make (20min vs 5-10 min). Generally, food takes around 10-15min of a wait, so keep that in mind. I've also had the large pizzas at various events, and the pizza is consistently good. Service-wise, probably a 3/5. Unfortunately. service isn't really their strong suit, but that's okay. Most people don't come here to fine dine. Ambiance-wise, probably a 4/5. Good amount of seating, and TVs play sports games. Very casual place. Gives kind of a retro sports bar feel. read more

Frankly, I would give it a 3.5 in terms of food, but the fact that it's open until 10 pm makes it amazing for me since most of the Northside places are closed by that time. The pastas are pretty good and fairly priced as are the pizzas. They have a solid margherita pizza which is pretty tasty! Once, they did burn part of my pizza and ended up making me a fresh one which I appreciated. They also gave me the semi-burnt one for the wait which I did not mind at all because it was still mostly edible. Love that they are open when everything else is closed. It reminds me of one of those pizza places you go to with your soccer or baseball team after a game or for a team gathering. I was glad that they had vegan pizza, though! Even with a bit of a drunchies, La Val's didn't really impress me all that much. This isn't to say that the pizza wasn't good.. Yummy, even. However with pizza places aplenty, La Val's didn't really stand out. I didn't step inside the restaurant since my boyfriend went in to order and I sat at one of the benches at a shared outdoor space with Daily Pint, with our beers, so I can't really comment on the interior. Despite a bit of a line, they seemed to take orders fairly quickly. My boyfriend returned to me a lot sooner than I expected! Our pizza took a reasonable 15-20 minutes to make, but he had to keep going back inside to check if our food was done -- they don't have a system where people waiting outside can hear their number. Our order was a medium two-toppings pizza cut into 6 slices which was around $20. Pizza was freshly made, with the cheese melted just right and the crust was crunchy and on the thinner side. The toppings (red bell peppers + pepperoni) didn't really add too much to the pizza though. Perhaps I just need to try some of the other things they have to offer. I'll be back, but probably not before I try some of the other pizza places first. read more

There is sometimes a fine distinction between a place being a Dive or a Dump. Dives generally have a relaxed and informal atmosphere and are referred to by folks like me as neighbourhood joynts. And depending on the location, individual bars might be considered to be disreputable, sinister, or even a detriment to the community. Yes! However, when a Campus Dive like La Val's also features dirty Tables (including crumbs), sticky Floors, messy bathrooms, average Pizza, and disengaged counter staff, that line has been crossed. read more

I'm so confused. This place must have pizza made by the hands of god to warrant this high star level because I've only got their pasta dishes and they're god awful. The chicken parmesan is dry, hard, and bland. The sauce is also bland, yet greasy. The meatballs in the spaghetti are gross. They're mealy and have a bad flavor. I will never order from here again. And for some reason the spaghetti and meatballs gave my daughter explosive diarrhea. Considering spaghetti is pretty much her favorite thing ever, and she's had it from numerous restaurants without getting explosive diarrhea, I'm going to guess something this joint did was the problem. read more

One of the worst pizzas I have ever had! Very bland and tasteless. This location is at the heart of UCB campus so they mostly cater to students.. however their prices are not cheap. One full star for having the pizza ready and answering the phone promptly. None of the employees who handled the food wore gloves. Everything at La Val's is pretty good. It is a unique venue on Euclid Ave because they have beer and big TVs perfect for watching College basketball games. Their dining room is also pretty big so finding a table even for large groups is not too difficult. Service is generally helpful, but your interaction with the staff should be minimal since you order at a counter and then go pick up your food. Food doesn't always come out super fast, even when it is a salad, so be willing to wait for a bit. Long lines can also form during the lunch and dinner peak hours. Onto the food. Pizza: not too bad, especially when fresh. Thin crust, lots of toppings, and some interesting topping combinations. Salads: satisfying and substantial. You can add grilled chicken to make it a meal. Their Greek salad is my preferred option as it has tons of feta. Don't get the Caesar. Sandwiches: surprisingly good and cheap. I have not been disappointed yet with their meatball or their pastrami. They come with a side potato salad. Pasta: I am pretty picky when it comes to pasta, but honesty it is not too bad. I was not too impressed with their lasagna or spaghetti, but their other options are not bad. Won't always be cooked to perfection, but you get a good portion and it comes with some garlic bread so you will definitely get full.
