Such a cute spot for a date night! The pizza was absolutely delicious, with a great variety of pies to choose from. Our server was incredibly hospitable and made the experience even better. The arancini with lemon was a unique touch and definitely worth trying. They also have an expansive beverage menu, so there's plenty to choose from alongside your pizza. Overall, a great little spot for good food, drinks, and a cozy date night!
The pizza is so good - I can see why the pizzaiolo has won many local awards - and props for being a woman owned business and chef. Honesty, the pizza is some of the best in Berkeley. Where I found room for improvement was the other. The salads were expensive and not quite worthy. The Caesar was pretty disappointing, and I love me a Caesar salad. It didn't have enough dressing, resulting in a dry and flavorless salad. The gelato was delicious, but also an extremely small scoop for $7. The place is cute. It has some outdoor seating but the star is the downstairs area. We were a bigger party, and were able to snag a last minute reservation for 8 people in the much more casual upstairs space. The downstairs is smaller, but very mid-century modern classy with a great wooden bar, perfect for date night. Back to the pizza: It's really good. The pepperoni is delicious. We also went with a speciality pie with cured meats, arugula and hot honey and it was truly a great pizza. They offer a variety of crusts - NY style, Detroit, Sicilian and Grandma. I only tried NY style and it was so good but the others look decadently good. Prices are similar to other pizza spots, so you're paying $28-35ish for a large. They do have small available, as well. Overall, a really great downtown Berkeley spot. Great pizza, great for families, and while space is somewhat limited, it's still great for groups.
I've been wanting to try this place out for forever and it finally happened! Safe to say this is the best pizza I've ever had in Berkeley. We were a party of three and definitely over ordered- the Sicilian style Ray J, Truly thin and crispy, and arancini, but zero regrets. The Truly thin and crispy really reminded me of the Ciccino at Truly Pizza in Dana Point, which is my favorite pizza spot in the world! As the name suggests, it's very thin and crispy and I loved the texture. Great as an appetizer pizza lol. Thick square focaccia style pizza is definitely my preference, which is why the Ray J Sicilian was my favorite here. The toppings are generous, love the large chunks of cheese and the hot honey on this one. The arancini we got was also amazing, it had a slight lemony tang to it and some veggies inside which balanced out all the fried cheesiness in it. Would super recommend Pizzeria da Laura, and come in a large party if you can! I think my only downside is the bathroom situation as you have to take a key to take the elevator downstairs and it was hard to get a hold of the key, but maybe try to come at a less busy time. That reminds me, for sure make a reservation for weekends! Super easy to do on their website. Service by everyone was very kind and they were helpful explaining the difference between all their pizzas.
When I have the opportunity to explore an area I'm not familiar with, naturally I do a food search. In this case, a Sunday evening in Berkeley where a majority of businesses close earlier, pizza was a good option. I decided between the top two recommendations, I went with the award winning chef and pizza at Pizzeria da Laura. I ordered the Regina, and added sausage. The 18" was a generously sized pie, with an abundance of toppings and at a few dollars over $40 was well worth it. Great crust is a must for pizza and the entire pie was delicious. The staff were nice and the location is both attractive and convenient. Next time I plan to get that enticing looking Detroit deep dish.
My friend and I tried to get into Rose Pizzeria for dinner, but they had too long of a wait, so we ended up here instead, but it wasn't at all a letdown. We were greeted by the friendliest server (a tall guy with curly hair whose name I unfortunately didn't get but shout-out to him) who asked us if we had any questions about the menu. My friend and I had already glanced at the menu when we checked in with the host, so we pretty much knew what we wanted. I did ask our server about crust options though and ended up going with the New York style because I didn't have the stomach capacity for the slightly thicker options like Detroit but perhaps next time with a bigger group! We ordered The Standard, which seemed like a good choice because of the diverse, balanced toppings, and the chicories & beets salad. The salad arrived quickly, and the pizza was brought to our table soon after. I liked how refreshing and crisp the salad was, but the pizza was really what I wanted. It was everything I wanted in a pizza - definitely the best choice of the lineup imo. The crust was so soft and pillowy I couldn't resist devouring it all and leaving no trace. I'm very much a crust gal. Glad the plan to hit up Rose Pizzeria didn't work out so that we could discover this gem. With the various styles of pizza options available, there's sure to be something from the menu for everyone here!
We came here because they have their own full vegan menu. We didn't have a reservation, but we were seated right away anyways. We ordered the larger vegan NY pepperoni pizza (we added mushrooms) and a vegan Caesar salad. I have to say, this was one of the best vegan pizzas I've ever had. The Caesar salad was a great size for two people and the dressing was more of a dip, which was delicious! I like how they also have Italian sodas. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and the service was really great too! Overall, I would most definitely return to this place next time I'm back in Berkeley!
Well-crafted pizzas with a choice of 4 different styles. My friend and I have spent the last few decades trying out different pizza places across the Bay Area, and Pizzeria da Laura did not disappoint! We tried a Sicilian style pizza that was super delicious - the crust was thick and fluffy and aromatic, with a perfectly light crunchy bite - no soggy bottoms here, folks! It almost doesn't matter which flavor, but we had the Ray J which was a delightful blend of sweet and savory. In contrast, we also tried a seasonal vegan pizza prepared in the thinner-than-Sicilian Grandma style - this was also delicious and the crust was satisfyingly crunchy. We appreciated the quality ingredients and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The arancini balls were pretty good but the stars were the pizzas. Service was efficient, helpful, and friendly - Laura herself was on hand to make recommendations and answer all our questions. The space had a nice vibe and was clean and comfortable. Parking wasn't too bad - found a spot two blocks away. Will return to try more pizzas, as well as a pasta dish. If you're ever in the area, I do recommend that you check it out. This pizzeria has been around for 3 years and we want it to stick around for a long long time.
A really solid pizza place, definitely one of the best Sicilian pizzas I've ever had in the Bay area. The service was fast and the ambiance seemed really nice but we took it to go. I definitely want to come back and try the pesto pizza, but the red sauce was really good! 4.25/5
Tried the Ray J Sicilian pie with a friend and the crust was outstanding--light n airy, crispy, tender, moist. We thought the tomato sauce could have had more flavor and that there was more of it. The toppings were fresh and tasty although the I didn't get any garlic from the garlic fermented honey. Service was average. Would definitely come back here to try the other flavors and pizza styles.
Reminds me of a crispy garlic cheese bread (but it's Detroit pizza so that's to be expected). The arugula adds a lot of flavor to the pizza--I think that a pizza with a lot of variety is good due to the fact that the pizza itself is dense. Pizza is made on the spot so we waited about 15-20 minutes for our pizza to come. Would say it's pretty solid overall. Really cute place, just get a pizza that has more toppings than you think. Don't get the one with hot honey on it lowkey, there are better choices.
First time at Pizzeria da Laura and glad to finally give it a try. The wait for 4 people at 5 pm on a Saturday was quick with no reservations. We all enjoyed the chicories and beets salad. Very refreshing. The Marge pizza was good. Their take on the classic margherita. The dough and crust was super tasty. Everyone liked the Ray J Sicilian version. 12 slices. The dough was pillowy and fluffy with crisp crust. Enjoyed the garlic fermented honey. By 6:30, the entire restaurant was filling up. Some notes that could improve, serving cold water with ice for the warm Berkeley days like today. Adding more servers so the one server is not as busy. We got a box for few leftover slices but instead of giving the check he walked away to take another table's order. We had to flag him down again for check and never received copy of receipt due to being busy with other tables. Indoor/outdoor seating Street parking only
Pizzeria da Laura in Berkeley is a fantastic spot for Italian food right in the heart of downtown, just steps from the university. The location gives it a lively downtown vibe with lots of energy from the surrounding area and nearby students. The reservation and check-in process was very smooth. The staff were incredibly courteous, welcoming, and helpful throughout the visit. I actually arrived about 30 minutes earlier than my reservation time, and they were kind enough to seat us early, which was a really nice touch. One thing I really like about this place is that they update their dishes a few times a year, so every visit can feel a little different and exciting. The menu has great variety, especially when it comes to pizza styles as you can choose from New York, Sicilian, Detroit, and Grandma-style pizzas, and the pricing is very straightforward for all the sizes they serve. The pizza was perfectly cooked and tasted great. They also allow you to customize your pizza by adding or removing ingredients, which makes it very convenient for everyone to choose based on their liking. And they add toppings with open-heart. The pasta was also excellent. We ordered the Peperoncino pasta, and it tasted amazing. The garlic flavor and breadcrumbs were really the highlight and brought out the authentic character of the spaghetti. Another big plus is that they have plenty of vegetarian options, making it easy for different dietary preferences. The portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable for what they serve. Food arrived quickly, and the service from the servers and staff was great throughout the visit. The restaurant also has plenty of space and handles reservations well. The atmosphere is lively with lots of people around and students from the nearby university, which adds to the downtown Berkeley energy. A little more upbeat music could add even more charm to the place. Overall, this is a place I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Berkeley. It's the kind of restaurant I'd happily come back to again and again.
I've been looking forward to visiting Pizzeria da Laura ever since I heard about Chef Laura Meyer's success in world pizza competitions. It definitely lived up to the hype. The location is excellent. It's within walking distance of UC Berkeley, just a minute from Downtown Berkeley BART, and there's a public parking garage a block away. Another nice touch is the market next door. They sell pizza by the slice, snacks, and drinks. I would've been there 100% during my college days. The customer service was outstanding. Everyone was genuinely friendly, welcoming, and happy to answer questions. The atmosphere was warm, clean, and inviting. You can watch the pizzas being made, and there's also a TV if you want to catch a game while you eat. It had a relaxed neighborhood feel that made us want to stay a little longer. Having delivered for Round Table back in the '90s, I have an appreciation for the flow of a pizza operation. Everything felt organized and efficient. We started with the Chicories & Beets salad. It was fresh, crisp, and a perfect way to start the meal. We ordered the 18" NY Ray J and Detroit The Standard. Detroit The Standard was my favorite. The crispy, caramelized cheese edges were incredible, while the inside stayed light and airy. The mushrooms were perfectly cooked, not soggy at all. Every topping tasted fresh, and the balance of pepperoni, sausage, onions, olives, and sauce was spot on. The NY Ray J was just as impressive. The crust had the perfect balance of crispiness and chew, making it easy to fold. The combination of thin and thick pepperoni, creamy burrata, fresh basil, fermented honey, and Parmigiano Reggiano was outstanding. Every slice came with a great cheese pull. Both pizzas had crispy crusts, fresh toppings, quality ingredients, and just the right amount of sauce. We left feeling satisfied, not heavy or bloated. We visited on a Wednesday, and by dinner time the restaurant was full. That's always a good sign. One of the highlights of the visit was chatting with Chef Laura about dough, ingredients, and technique. It gave me an even greater appreciation for the attention to detail that goes into every pizza, and I picked up a few ideas that will definitely improve my homemade pizza game. I'm actually eating the leftovers as I write this review. They reheat beautifully. The crust stays crispy, the toppings still taste fresh, and they're just as satisfying the next day. We'll definitely be back to try more of the menu. Whether you're a Berkeley local or just passing through, Pizzeria da Laura is absolutely worth the trip.
The calzone alone is worth coming back for! Absolutely incredible! I honestly don't even know where to begin. We ordered both pizza and calzone, and the quality of the food was absolutely outstanding! But let me tell you about the CALZONE! It was on a completely different level. Seriously, if you come here and only order pizza without trying their calzone, you are missing out on something AMAZING! The flavor, the quality, the freshness, the generous filling... everything was just PERFECT! And the portion size? HUGE! One calzone is easily enough to satisfy two people! I'm actually very picky when it comes to restaurants. It takes something truly special for me to want to visit the same place again, especially when there are so many other restaurants to try. But this place? I will absolutely be coming back! I would honestly travel a long distance just to have that calzone again. That's how good it was! The pizza was excellent too, but the calzone completely stole the show. My advice? DO NOT leave this place without trying the calzone. Trust me, you'll thank me later! Hands down, one of the best calzones I've ever had. Absolutely phenomenal! read more

Everything about our experience at Pizzeria Da Laura in Berkeley was absolutely perfect! The meatballs were delicious--so flavorful, tender, and moist, and the sauce was absolutely incredible. And the arancini... hands down, the best I've ever had! Perfectly crispy on the outside and so delicious on the inside. We ordered The Standard pizza, and it was baked to perfection! The crust was perfect, the sauce was delicious, and every topping could be tasted in every single bite. Everything came together so beautifully. The ambiance was amazing too--warm, inviting, and the perfect setting for a great meal. The service was great! This was one of those meals where everything was just right. Amazing food, great atmosphere, and an experience we truly enjoyed. We'll definitely be back! read more

Hi Melanie, thank you for the rave review! We’re so happy to hear you…
Brief Summary: - Close to the Downtown Berkeley BART station - Indoor and outdoor seating available - Right next to it there is a shop where you can purchase slices and ingredients Lately, this is the family's favorite pizza place. The first time we tried this was a few years ago, and one of my family members wanted to try a new place to eat pizza and had been exploring one almost once a month cadence. Then we tried here, and we were amazed and became our favorite. One of the reasons why we like going here more often than the other restaurants, the food of course, but the comfortable restaurant atmosphere. Still to this day we chose to walk-in and test our luck than take a reservation, and so far we were able to get a seat. In the most recent visit, there was a university game, so there was a longer wait time. The good thing about waiting was there were dedicated seats to wait, or in the first few minutes we hung out in the shop next door. Here, visitors can choose to buy and take home a slice instead of dining in, order food or shop for ingredients. The pizzas we've eaten so far are the Sicily style and this one has a lovely texture. Its appearance is like pillows. It's lightly-crispy on the edges, even the under-layer. It holds the pizza toppings without bending. We also tried a pizza named the most thinnest pizza, and we loved this one too. This one was located under the Speciality menu, so this didn't have topping customization. We loved that while it was very thin it still held the toppings too. I also love stracciatella cheese, so I also tasted the milkiness while eating this slice. We've also loved the pasta and have been trying a new menu each time. The one we tried recently had a fun texture, like a gentle crunch, and the pesto sauce was easy to eat, didn't get heavy in the end of the meal. I also tried a salad that was being served to most of the tables on this particular evening; a bowl of purple leafs, purple onions, and beets. The chicory leaf had a subtle bitterness to it, but with the sweet beet, it balanced it out. I also love goat cheese, and it was creamy. Wrapping up the review, it gave me a soft joy when the staff recognized and greeted us. The staff were kind and attentive since our first visit,, so his was another part that we liked during our eating experience. We'll definitely visit again when we're craving pizza. read more

One of the best pizza places in the Bay Area! Love that you are able to customize and choose what style of pizza you prefer. There's Ny style which is the classic pizza slice that's thinner. Or the grandma style which is thicker than ny and thinner than a Sicilian slice ( this is my perfect choice ). Sicilian is thicker than grandma style and is more thick. And the thickest of all is the Detroit style! I got the ray j grandma style! I came here with my boyfriend's family and the next week we came back with more family! Everyone loved the ray j! It was creamy from the burrata, sweet from the honey and sooo good with the little pepperonis! Personally one of my favs and my boyfriend's family's favorite! I've converted them all to eating here !!! We also got the standard grandma style and pepperoni NY style but everyone's fav is the RAY J!! We even got another pizza at the end bc 3 wasn't enough!! We reserved a table this time bc we had more than 6 people but last time we walked in and was seated right away! Everyone is super friendly and will explain all the styles of pizza! Couldn't even get a decent picture of the ray j bc it was THAT GOOD! read more

Thank you Jennifer! We appreciate your review and feedback :) :)
Amazing service -- our waiter was warm, attentive and knowledgeable. Incredible broccolini and aranciata, absolutely smashing. We had pizza slices that were huge and filling. I wish they had more creative vegetarian options though. The chef is brilliant so I'd love to see some of that skill applied to veggie dishes! read more

Had a great time at dinner after wanting to try this spot for awhile. Tried both a pasta and pizza, the rigatoni was excellent! I honestly liked this more than the pizza. The pizza wasn't bad, it would have nice with a bit more sauce. But still delicious! Our server was incredibly nice and walked us through the menu to help us decide what to get. The desserts were also both amazing! The restaurant is very cozy and they also have a nice upstairs section. I would come back again! read more

Employee appreciation week! One of our guys recommended this pizzaria for our employee appreciation week! We were sort of skeptical but man, he delivered! The place is pretty big for a pizza place with sitting both indoor and outdoor! However, we decided to order takeout pizzas! We didn't have a favorite but all were good specially the meat lovers one. We will definitely order takeout again in the future. Lastly, on the wing of the restaurant they have a little area where you can order by the slice! A really great option to have! Definitely stop by when you're in downtown Berkeley in the Shattuck area! I know we will! read more

Wonderful pizza spot in Downtown Berkeley! I've only had takeout from Pizzeria da Laura, but I loved their pizza and service during my experience. I ordered a Detroit style Ray J online and picked it up around 20 minutes after I got the notification that my order was ready. When I got there, they took my pizza out from a thermal protected bag and my pizza was still very warm despite my late pick up! The pizza itself was delicious - the crust was crispy, while the dough was fluffy, and the combination of tomato + burrata + basil + honey was fantastic. I've never eaten inside but before, but the ambiance seemed very nice and welcoming. I've heard their salads are delicious as well. Would love love love to return to dine-in soon! read more

As a huge pizza fan, I'll admit I'm very picky when it comes to pizza. For me, a great pizza has to get three things right: the crust, the cheese, and the sauce. Pizzeria da Laura nails all three. I love that they offer different crust options, my personal favorite is the thick, Detroit-style crust. The Grandma style came in a close second, but honestly, you can't go wrong with any of them. The sauce has just the right balance of tang and sweetness, the cheese is top quality, and every bite feels perfectly crafted. They also have a great selection of beer, cocktails, and wine to pair with your meal. And the fact that it's set in a beautiful historic building just adds to the charm, the whole place has such a wonderful, inviting vibe. If you love pizza (and care about the details), this place will make you very happy. read more

3.5 rounded up Granny style La Regina- really great texture when it first comes out. I wouldn't recommend getting this to go. If you do, expect to reheat it in the air-fryer. It got a bit hard and not as good mid-way through dinner. Ingredients seemed very fresh and flavors were as expected. Small NY style Ray J- I felt this packed more flavor than La Regina but I'm not sure if I really liked the garlic infused honey. It wasn't terrible but I think I prefer hot honey on pizza over garlic honey. The pepperonis were tasty but I do like mine a little more crisp. And the texture of the pizza crust was not crispy in the center. It's limp when you pick up the slice. The edge was good though. Overall, I liked the granny style over the New York style but only if you eat the granny style quickly. Once the granny style gets hard, the New York style is better. After tax and tip, it's pretty pricy for 2 small pizzas. I wouldn't mind going back to try other flavors but I also wouldn't be in a rush. Staff was friendly and attentive. There's a clean restroom, which needs a keycard to get in, for patrons in the basement. read more

Hi Sheila, thank you for coming to dine with us. We hope you’ll visit…
Matt's next stop on his excellent East Bay Pizza research is Pizzeria da Laura. Pizza da Laura has all of the ingredients that make a thin crust pizza great. Chewy yet crusty dough that stands up to any toppings you want. My pie came with quarter size pepperoni liberally added to a tomato and cheese base that made me smile. Location is central Berkeley near campus. Parking can be challenging but their are dedicated lots near by. Berkeley has become a Mecha for outstanding Pizzas, and Pizzeria da Laura is definitely in my top three. If you are going to Cal Football or an event at the Freight, Matt says drop by Pizzeria da Laura for a pie. You can thank me later read more

Hi Matt, thank you for the support and feedback! We hope to welcome…
We popped in on a whim and loved the Art Deco vibe right away. The service was efficient and friendly -- staff actually recommended things off the menu, which made choosing easy. We shared the rectangular "Ray J" style pizza (square-cut, melty mozzarella, olives, zucchini, mushrooms, spinach) and it was perfectly browned at the edges with a great balance of toppings. The broccolini with white beans and a spoonful of chili crisp was a standout -- bright, garlicky, with a nice spicy kick. Bathroom down in the basement felt odd at first, but it was roomy and clean. We only had water and skipped dessert (trying to be good), but we're already plotting our next visit and which pie to try next. Two thumbs up from both of us -- would definitely go again. read more

Traveled up from SJ to try this place out bc my bf read an article. We recently got back from NY eating some of the best NY pizza we had so our expectations were high. We got the Regina NY style. The pizza bread was crispy , the cheese on top wasn't my favorite, i like mozzarella, there was alot of prosciutto on top, making it a bit salty for me, but nice they dont skimp on the meat, i liked the arugula. My stomach just couldnt handle maybe the cheese or meats. Overall im glad we tried it and would maybe try a different one with different meat and mozzarella cheese next time. The service was amazing and they have patio seating and open doors so it was nice with the sunny weather. read more

The Ray J Detroit Style is absolutely fantastic, COME HERE AND GET THIS. I've literally been thinking about it since I had it. Wanna try more things but our waitress was also the sweetest! The ambiance was meh and I also thought the menu was a little too big and overwhelming. Great experience though, just narrow down what to get before you go! read more

Thank you Hannah! We hope to have you join us again soon :)
This spot really surprised me, and is definitely some of the best pizza I have had in the Bay. We tried a Detroit style pizza with thick cut pepperoni- crust was light, airy, flavorful, and just a wonderful crispy cheese on the outer layer. Not overdone, not overly greasy. Just really good. Also tried a NY style which was equally as good. Again, really good crust. For this one we got the "Ray J" with pepperoni with burrata, honey, basil. I thought it might be too heavy on the toppings, but the pizza held up and all the flavors were great. Overall, just VERY good and above average pizza spot. If I lived closer, I would probably make this my regular spot. That being said, will return anytime I am in Berkeley. read more
