LOVE. Intimidated by the line that forms around the corner down Vine? Don't worry - the line moves quickly because it's a well oiled machine, and the line is there for a reason. These pies are fire! The unique flavors they put together on a daily are unreal. And the green sauce! We recently had this pie with taziki sauce, eggplant, and mint (with other yummies) and OMG - it was like eating a shwarma or something. But the true indicator of a good pizza is its crust/dough. And damn does Cheese Board have an amazing crust. I've been a Berkeley resident for over 14 years and the Cheese Board is the best pizza (of its style) in the East Bay. We're SO lucky we're close enough that we can consistently keep this in our rotation. Oh and their social activism is chef's kiss. read more

Cheese Board Pizza, you never do me wrong. I used to go to Cal and would try to make the bus trip to Cheese Board when I needed a treat, and they alwayssss pulled through. Now that I live elsewhere, I still make sure to swing by Cheese Board if it's a pizza day because I know their pies will always be solid and satisfying. Service is always really friendly too, and while the line is always long, it's so worth it to brave. FYI this is a vegetarian pizza and they only sell ONE type of special pizza per day (not including gluten free). Whole pizza is $26 half is $13 and they put two vegan pizza slices or something on top of all orders for free, which is interesting. Green sauce is 2.50 for small and 5.00 for a large. Definitely get the green sauce. We waited in line for 45minutes on a Thursday evening around 5:20pm. Service was average, you wait in line, walk to the counter and they take your order. I'm not entirely sure what tipping is for especially if I have to stand in line for 45 minutes to get my food that is packed in a to-go box and I have to bus my own dishes! I know controversial but it felt hostile after I selected $0. Anyways, there was limited seating indoors but some outdoor seating but they were all pretty full. To the food review, today's pizza had Corn, red onion, mozzarella, house made tomatillo sauce, queso fresco, cilantro. Good flavors, they know how to select/make cheese but the pizza was just okay. It isn't authentic or anything but a cool experience. Might come back again, I went in not knowing what to expect and was confused why a vegetarian pizza with no meat was $26 but thats all! My daughter is in town from college & I wanted to take her out for pizza. Last minute we yelped & picked Cheeseboard because we wanted to be able to bring our dog. Pizza flavor the day I went: Crushed Tomato, Red Onion, Mozzarella, Garlic, Olive Oil, Basil-Pine nut Parmesan Unexpectedly... which was fine, I learned: 1. they serve a different flavor pizza every day so check online for the flavor of the day 2. Cheese Board never disappoints! All of their flavors are always delicious - our pizza flavor was organic zucchini, red onion, herbed fresh ricotta (ricotta made in Berkeley by Belfiore), mozzarella, garlic olive oil, parsley and the salad was spiced tomato-cucumber pickle, Valbreso feta cheese, organic salad mix, cumin-coriander vinaigrette. We got a side of green sauce as well. I always appreciate the extra small slices and the freshness and quality of the ingredients. The line was not bad at all for 5:30pm on a Saturday night and we took ours pizza to go to eat at Live Oak Park nearby. The live music at Cheese Board is also one of my favorite things! read more

I really hesitated to write this review. Because I'm with the outliers who think this spot is overhyped. Way overhyped. I had this on my list given the amazing reviews but man, I just don't get it. I also understand they only serve one and only one type of pizza per day and it changes daily. I was in Emeryville so it was time to check this off my list. Arrived and it was maybe 5? There was already a line. And this is always a good sign. As we got closer, we could hear lively jazz music. Amazing that a pizza place would have live music. 5 stars! Line was long but moved relatively quickly. It stalled a little when I was one person behind until the register. But I get it - they were waiting on hot fresh pizza and I notice they would cut the "older" pizza into smaller slices and threw them into half or whole order pizzas as something extra. Finally placed an order and I'm so glad I opted for a half pizza ($13) instead of a whole ($26). Sometimes, being a skeptic pays off. The staff works quick and the cashier was friendly. Service - 5 stars! Got my fresh hot half pizza. Sat down, took a photo and took a bite, expecting something as amazing as most if not all the reviews on here. But...man was I underwhelmed. Crust is thin and crispy at the edges and plenty of cheese but no cheese pull as I bit and pull the pizza away. This nice, it was the asparagus something something. There really wasn't much flavor or layers. As I ate more of it, I realized what it was. And then it had me wondering what qualifies as pizza? Is it just any flat dough with toppings, whether with sauce or no sauce. But if there's no sauce, wouldn't it just be flatbread or just cheesy flatbread with toppings? Well...call it what you want but today's offering was a cheesy flatbread with a bunch of vegetarian toppings. And thus, the lack of complex flavors. I also understand why people say to get the green sauce but I didn't want a spicy sauce. A marinara sauce would've been really nice. I'm not a local here so I can't come according to my liking based on their pizza schedule but tonight, the cheesy flatbread pizza with asparagus, red onion, mozzarella, toasted garlic Parmesan, garlic olive oil, and parsley just didn't cut it for me. Felt completely underwhelmed and sadly and honestly, this place fell so short for me but I gave it 3 stars given the live music and the staff there. For tonight's pizza, it was more like a 2.5. Best pizza in the bay! Whenever I'm in East Bay, I crave cheeseboard-- they just know how to make amazing thin crust pizza! They somehow change their flavor every day and they perfect it each time. How can a place just serve one pizza and have a giant line out the door? You must buy the green sauce to dip your pizza in- it's the perfect complement and has a spicy kick to it. Can't believe I haven't written a review for Cheeseboard yet. Arguable the best pizza in the East Bay. They offer 1 daily flavor, vegetarian only, but don't let that deter you! Each pizza is made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and I've never been disappointed by a single combination they've created. If you're lucky enough to be there when they have their corn pizza..... Definitely ask for their signature green sauce on the side. On weekends, you can vibe with the live music and enjoy your meal on their outdoor patio or indoor seating. If you're in a rush, takeout is always an option, and they also have frozen pies for you to bake at home. After 20+ years of eating Cheeseboard pizza, it's probably time for me to go on record as being a fan. I like some variations more than others but, honestly, I've never had a pie that I don't like. I only recently learned that they'll make it with vegan cheese. Just walk up to the counter and let someone know you want a vegan pie, then go get in line. For newbies, don't be deterred by the line. If it's to the corner, you may wait about 20-25 minutes (less time than it takes to prefer and get a pizza elsewhere). I appreciate that employees are part of the coop and treated well. I usually see a long line so I avoided this place like the plague. They also only do vegetarian options only, which is the real reason why I avoided it lol. I was all wrong about this place. The line went by quick maybe no more than 10-15 minutes. They were crunching out pizza like clockwork. The pizza crust had this crispy texture and held up well when folding. The topping didn't slide right off either. I'd have to say this was a very well made pizza. I love how they added 2 slices on top of the whole pizza. I may have to come back again soon. I've heard great things about the pizza here, but never got around to trying it until now. The long lines always intimidated me. But now that I tried it, it actually wasn't bad at all! The line moved very quickly, and I was probably out with my pizza within 10 minutes. There's also plenty of outdoor seating area to quickly eat. Love the vegetarian pizzas and the seasonal vegetables and toppings at Cheese Board Pizza! Today's toppings included cremini mushrooms, caramelized onions, spinach, mozzarella, cheddar, and toasted pine nuts! It was a wonderful mix of toppings and flavors. If there are certain toppings you do not like, I recommend checking out the website for the daily special. I don't like potato on pizza, so I try to avoid days that have potato as toppings! They only use organic and local ingredients whenever possible. Sometimes I get parbake if I am eating at home, which are partially baked pizzas that you can heat up for 5~8 minutes at home and enjoy fresh! They also have sauces that complement the pizzas well. I ALWAYS get the famous green sauce which has cilantro, avocado, chili, pesto, and more. Now they have 2 sizes which are 8 ounce and 16 ounce. 16 ounce is too much sometimes so it's great they offer a smaller size now! Sadly the sauce bar disappeared post-COVID. DARN YOU COVID! I FINALLY TRIED THE SOFT SERVE ICE CREAM AND I WILL GET IT EVERY TIME I GET THE PIZZA NOW! They use buffalo milk which is super fatty and creamy, perfect for ice cream. They rotate their flavors and this visit they had Dark Chocolate flavor and Pumpkin Spice flavor. I wanted to try both so they were able to provide half and half of each flavor. The dark chocolate was decadent and tasty, but too strong in flavor overpowering the pumpkin spice. I really loved the pumpkin spice, perfect blend of pumpkin, spice, and creaminess. Check their website for the pizza schedule. All pizzas are vegetarian and do not have red sauce! Caution if a "traditional" pie is your expectation. Best eaten piping hot and fresh, although reheats decently as well. You get a couple bonus slivers on top of your full pie which I gobble up as soon as possible, then enjoy a stroll to Live Oak Park a couple blocks away to enjoy the rest with friends. Crust is thin and crisp with a sourdough tang. Green sauce - a lovely emulsified, tangy, spicy, herbaceous thing. I like to get a bigger tub to use in sandwiches and other fun things. There's usually a line but it moves quick since there's only one pizza option available. Don't be too intimidated by it. Seating can be tricky but folks are normally shuffling around often enough where you'll find some. Wow! 13 years since my last review here? I'm sure we've been here at least once or twice since then. Well, today I was out and about on Tuesday with the dog. It must have been a foraging day for me because I stopped here and also a bakery on Solano. As I was driving by, I saw that the line looked very tame, maybe 10 people at the most. I found a metered space at the curb in front of Andronico's. After paying for 30 minutes of parking, I walked back to Cheese Board and got into line. The line moved at a good pace and everyone who walked away with pizza, whether it be a slice, a half-pie or a whole pie, looked happy. I opted for the full pie to go plus a small container of Green Sauce. If you've never tried it, it's worth the $2.50 for the small container of liquid spice to drizzle over your slices. I ate one slice as soon as I got back to my car. Shared some with my wife when I got home and we had it cold over the next two days. There was a trio playing live music in the corner of the restaurant. A guitar, a standing bass and a vocalist. I fail to remember their name, but they had a very pleasant sound. read more

I have been dreaming of going to this spot for years, and it was everything I'd hope for!! Cheeseboard serves up classic Berkeley style pizza (thinner crust, no/minimal sauce, available by the slice or by half/full pies), with one flavor every day. They're known for making their own bread and cheese, then using it for their pizzas. All slices are vegetarian!!! The special of the day was mushroom/onion (with loads of parsley), and we ordered a half pizza with their famous green sauce (cilantro / chile / other ingredients that make it so fresh and zesty). The crust was crisp/well oiled with a bite - foccacia and thin crust combined forces. The mushroom onion combo was divine - the pizza would have been slightly greasy if not for the green sauce saving the day. They also had soft serve (corn and Mexican hot chocolate, available as a swirl). So smooth, so perfectly flavored, I almost ate it all first. You order at the counter (only 15 minute wait Friday at 7:40 pm, 20 min before closing, and there's some seats indoors and many benches outdoors. Wanted to try cheeseboard because I've heard so many good things about it, but we were a bit underwhelmed by the pizza we got. Maybe it was an off day or the pizza of the day wasn't the best, but I found it to just be pretty average pizza. The menu said artichoke and feta but there was barely any of either. Essentially just a cheese pizza. Crust was good but nothing special. Price was decent for what we got, so would want to try another flavor another day. They had live music which was nice and plenty of seating outside with red pepper flakes and extra cheese. Went on a Thursday during lunch so the line was not bad either. Cremini and baby shiitake mushroom, baby spinach, roasted onion, pine nut, Fontina cheese, garlic olive oil, parsley pizza: It is a very juicy and savory flavor, the shiitake mushrooms were a really good addition. I think more pine nuts would've been even better for crunchy texture. I believe they created this flavor partly because they were having a special lunar new year celebration since there were some performances from a lion dance group and some guzheng players that same day. read more
