Rose Pizzeria, now boasting two locations, obviously is superb to start its Bay Area sprawl. So, it's no shocker that I'll say she's really good. I tried their pie for the first time, sharing a She Wolf pizza and spicy Caesar between our party of two. They strictly serve 14 inch thin crust pies, which is a decent amount of food split between 2, if you supplement with a starter course. The She Wolf, littered with olives and garlic confit, is sublime, and the dollops of burrata thoughtfully portioned on every slice make a rich, excellent contrast to the tangy sauce underneath. I'd imagine Portnoy being likely pleased with the undercarriage, which was stiff enough to not forfeit any of its structural integrity nor toppings to the almost-inevitable flop. The spicy Caesar is a damn good Caesar and not over nor under dressed. Next time, I'd add some anchovies. In Carrie Bradshaw fashion, I also indulged in a chilled red with my pizza this afternoon while people watching on their adorable patio. Is there really a better lunch to be had? read more

Stopped by Rose Pizzeria for lunch in Berkeley. They have very limited indoor seating (1-2 tables) and a nice outdoor patio with more seating. Their kitchen is pretty tiny, with maybe 1-2 chefs. I went on a Friday afternoon and there was no wait. I don't think they'd really be able to accommodate a larger party (5+ people). Their menu is kind of limited, and I wasn't really excited about their pizza offerings. They don't allow substitutions or mixing flavors (half and half), and their flavors either had meat and cheese or veggies and cheese (didn't see any that mixed meat and veggies unfortunately). They did have a few unique flavors like one that combined feta with I think it was like apricot or some fruit? We ordered 2 Pepperoni & Basil pizzas for 3 people ($24/pizza). Our waiter was nice and the pizzas came out fairly quickly. The pizza was good, but didn't stand out to me. I did like the texture of the crust (very crunchy). As someone from Brooklyn that has eaten pizza her whole life, I'm very critical about it. I can say Rose Pizzeria makes fantastic pizza. Their marinara sauce is perfectly sweet & not too acidic, perfect amount of cheese, and the taste of the dough in the pizza, plus the char on the crust was incredible- truly no notes for the Margherita pie. The Champione pie was a white pizza with mushrooms and charred leeks, this was sort of a 3.9/5 for me, and this is my personal opinion. Mushrooms and leeks are a good flavor combo, but I think it works better on pasta than as a pizza topping. Plentiful mushrooms in each bite, but I felt like they were competing with each other instead of complimenting each others. We ordered two pizzas about 1.5 hours in advance and the soonest scheduled pickup was at 4:45 PM. We arrived early around 4:15. I completely understand that arriving early doesn't automatically mean food should be ready early. I get restaurants want to make sure food stays fresh and hot, and they couldn't have known we would be there early. That said, what was frustrating was that once we were physically there waiting--and the restaurant/kitchen clearly was not busy--they still couldn't accommodate and begin making the pizzas. There was only one small table finishing up, no line of customers, or pickups walking in and out, no visible backlog of orders, and the dining area was clean/reset, making it clear they were not in the middle of a rush or large takeout order. We were told they would not start the pizzas until 4:30 and they'd be ready 15 minutes later--exactly at the scheduled pickup time. While I understand wanting to honor pickup windows, the inflexibility felt excessive given the circumstances. So when the university is on spring break, we took the opportunity to make a reservation for an early dinner on a Friday. They have a patio but all the seats were taken so we sat inside. The menu had some very interesting entries and our eyes immediately honed in on she wolf (tomato sauce, burrata, olives and capers with garlic confit) and the seasonal appetizer strawberry burrata. My friends and I ordered takeout and got 3 pizzas which cost $80 total. The pizzas are such good quality. I love the mushroom pizza and the pepperoni one. It's when the pepperoni are small crispy cups-- they do it just right. We also ordered the green pizza which was okay. We just heated them in the oven when we got them at home and they tasted so good. We also got a side of their house made ranch. Despite reservations, we had to wait about 25 minutes to get seated on the cute patio. Since the space is very tight, there is no good place to wait without getting in someone's way. Once seated, it was another 10-15 minutes before someone came to take the drink order. It looked like they only had one server working the inside and one outside, which is obviously insufficient on busy days. We read that spicy Caesar is a must, so we ordered one as an appetizer. It was pretty good but I wouldn't go back just for that. The two pizzas we tried were Margherita and classic pepperoni. IMO these two pies should showcase every great pizzeria, and Rose does them well. The pizzas are slightly bigger than Neapolitan pies and cut larger, almost NY style. The drink menu is appropriate for a pizzeria, wine and beer. But all the beers are in cans, no drafts, so I went with house wine instead. The prices are what you'd expect to pay at better pizza places in California nowadays, around $25 for a pizza. For a pizza out of electric oven, Rose is one of the better ones I've had. But compared to brick ovens, I don't think any electric oven pizza will come close. To say the hype around Rose is worth it, would not be truthful. There are definitely better pies in the area. One of the best pizza places I've ever been to. It's on university avenue so there is no parking. If you're lucky it's not crowded, but I wasn't. It was a 45 min wait to be seated. There was lots to do in the area tho so we walked around. I was about to say it was a really small restaurant but it's small in the front and I believe bigger in the patio. I loved the interior design tho, you could take pictures in here for your photo dumps haha! Quite a classic aesthetic, even the bathroom was gorgeous. Anyways the tables are VERY close together, which I didn't enjoy. It was quite an intimate experience and it felt like they were in on my conversation. And on top of that the walkways would sometimes be crowded because of the online orders. Anyways, they got my pizza wrong first time, I was waiting for another 20 minutes. Fortunately for me this was one of the best pizzas I've ever had. You know when you are talking and the food is so good the conversation ends. Yes. This was that kinda pizza. I enjoyed the crust. This used to be my favorite pizza spot. I recommended it to friends and family because every meal felt worth the trip. Unfortunately, my recent visit was a disappointment. The mushroom pizza was decent, but it was overly charred and lacked the balance and attention to detail that once made it stand out. It wasn't bad--it just wasn't exceptional, especially for the price. What made the experience more frustrating is that the prices haven't reflected this decline in quality. Even my spritz felt skimpy, with the glass mostly filled with ice. The service didn't help. To be fair, the staff have never been particularly warm or attentive, even during the years when I loved the food, so that wasn't new. The difference is that when the food was outstanding, it was easy to overlook the indifferent service. Now that the quality seems to have slipped, it stands out much more. Nine months ago, I would have enthusiastically given this place five stars. Now it feels like corners are being cut while the pricing remains the same. Opening at 12 noon and within 5-10 minutes of opening, we arrived to notice that half the restaurant is already full!? A good chew from well developed gluten. Not too chewy: evidence perhaps of the use of a biga. Yet, the bread lacked flavor. We got there a little before 12 and they open at 12. There was already a small line of about 5 people standing in front of the restaurant. They let patrons in a little before 12 and people were asking if they can get pizza to go and they said yes (this would not be a good pizza to take to go due to the thin dough getting soggy). The patio is very ugly with a plastic roof and looks like a shed. There were probably 30 flies hovering underneath the plastic roof of their patio and luckily they didn't touch our food but definitely not the vibe we prefer for dining. We ordered a pepperoni and basil pizza and it was like a medium pizza but since it's cracker thin, it felt like a regular small pizza in our stomaches. The slices were not well cut and there were two slices that were 2/3 of the pizza. One slice was the size of a baby's hand. The interior is non-descript and I'm not sure if it's much better than the patio minus the 30ish flies. The pizza was very light with minimal sauce and cheese but covered in small pepperoni that was overly salty. It had a good amount of fresh basil leaves that added an extra dimension to the flavor but overall, the pizza tasted mostly of salt so I do not recommend their pepperoni and basil pizza. People next to us had a mushroom pizza and that would have been my first choice but hubby is a meat eater so we had pepperoni and basil. The best part of the pizza was the super light and perfectly chewy yet crispy crust. The pizza dough is made of high quality flour and the ingredients are fresh but in terms of flavor, Cheese Board is still number one for me. This is possibly one of the best classical style pizzas I've had overall. I like Little Star for deep dish pizzas. This place is voted as a top 22 pizzeria in New York Times and that's why we came here today. Definitely a good pizza but the ambiance is a bit depressing especially with the flies and white plastic roof. Pizza came piping hot, but upon picking up a slice everything slid off the base. Center was very soggy, no hold, not sure if it was because of the red sauce. Pretty nice! Our favorite was the red sauce "she wolf" with capers. The white sauce one with broccolini was interesting, and the margherita was nice, though greasier than I'd hope for. I think Acre and State flour's margheritas are more true to an italian one (lighter, drizzle of olive oil, etc), so personally I preferred those over Rose's version. Rose Pizzeria made a huge splash in the East Bay pizza scene! They were recently mentioned on the NY Times best pizza places in the US. I made a reservation a day before and got one the next day for 8PM on a Sunday. I'd highly recommend making a reservation for this place because it is very packed inside. We were seated shortly after arriving. The service was brisk and to the point. The indoor seating felt a bit small but they do also have an outdoor patio space as well. Parking is a bit challenging but it is conveniently located near a lot of public transit options such as the 51B and Downtown Berkeley BART. To start, I shared the Tangerine & Burrata. The burrata had a creamy, mild taste that was easy to eat. I loved it with the focaccia bread and the tangerine pieces. For pizza, I got one of the pizza specials which was the Spicy Fig (fig jam, raclette, mozzarella, Fresno chili, red onion, and arugula). I absolutely love the taste of arugula so I was stoked that it was a topping on this pizza. The food came out quickly. The center of the pizza was soggy but toward the crust it was crisp. I wish there was a bit more fig jam on the pizza and that there was more of a kick from the Fresno chilies. I cannot resist tiramisu so I shared a slice of that for dessert. The sea salt on top balanced out the sweetness. This was my favorite part of the meal. Overall, I thought the pizza was good and the service was average. Ordered a mushroom white sauce pizza to go, it came out fairly quick ~15 minutes or so. I will say that the pizza was extremely salty heavy so keep some water by your side! Service was pretty standard id say anything special, not very friendly but I did come by at the end of the day so maybe there's that. read more

First, we were welcomed with slightly rude service -- we walked in and an employee asked "What are you looking for?" with no greeting or welcoming energy. We then put our name down with a nicer server who told us it'd be about an hour for 4 (3 adults and a baby) on a Thursday night. We were cool with the wait so we walked around and settled at a nearby bar, but were called 10 minutes after we left! We were then seated at a table fit for 2 and were not even offered a baby seat. We saw it on the side and grabbed it ourselves. Our table was extremely small, so when we got our two pizzas, I couldn't even eat on a plate..... I ate on a napkin and on the actual pizza tray We got the classic pep and old faithful. The classic pep was okay, and the Old Faithful was much more memorable! I like sweeter flavors on savory food, so the Old faithful was good for my taste! Our specific server was okay..
