Fitting to end the year reviewing Cheeseboard's New Year Eve pizza. Appearing only once a year, this pizza is loaded with 10+ kinds of mushrooms. Heaven for any fungi fiend. Umami level off the charts. It's so popular that I had to wait 40+ minutes in the rain to get my pie. Kudos to the staff for managing the crowd smoothly. Points for giving us cubes of havarti while we waited. read more

This is hands down my favorite pizza spot. I used to come here when I was in college at Cal and have made trips back over the years. This spot never disappoints. The pizza is always delicious and they have various pizza's throughout the week, which you can purchase per slice or the whole pie. The green sauce is everything, seriously, I love it! love the lively atmosphere and overall vibe. In the past they had live music, not sure if they have it still. The line can look intimidating, but it goes by fairly quickly. They don't have much seating, but there is some seats inside and some outdoor on the side walk. My only wish is that they were open longer hours. Otherwise, it's a perfect spot and one I'll always come back to and refer this to loved ones. What is not to love? Great Live music, positive upbeat energy, great pizzas, bonus points because they are also beer and wine and staff is always friendly and warm and plenty tables indoor and outdoors! Always a line (no matter lunch time or dinner time, weekday or weekend) but it moves fast :-) Came here with the in laws and our 7 year old and they loved this style of pizza which we are so fond of :) we shared salad and enjoyed with some beer Oh yes and the spicy green sauce which is always a hit and goes so well with the pizza! Continues to be the best pizza ever. We came 30 minutes before opening and the line formed down the street and around the corner! The pizza here will always be worth the wait because they switch up the flavors daily and it's always vegan. They also have jazz musicians that will play tunes while you eat inside or at the outside seating. read more

A friend brought Cheese Board Pizza, and it was absolutely delicious! They rotate their pizzas daily, so there aren't options to choose from, but I can imagine anything with their green sauce would be amazing. Definitely one of the best pizzas I've had and I've had my fair share, especially from my time in New York. I heard the line can get pretty long, but this is a must try if you're in Berkeley area. read more

All that cheese! Meet up with a few friends for pizza night because the pizza here is insanely good--fresh, creative, and always changing, but always amazing. After placing our order we found a spot to sit and there was a live band that evening. It was nice to have some live music while we caught up on each others lives. We got one with potato on it (I forgot what it was called!), and it was the perfect combo of savory and satisfying, with gooey, melty cheese that pulled it all together beautifully. The lines can get long, but they move quickly and are totally worth it. The vibe is fun and laid-back It's one of those places that feels uniquely Berkeley--in the best possible way. Finally made it to the Cheese Board Pizza Collective in Berkeley -- a spot I've wanted to try for years. They serve one style of pizza a day, and when it's gone, it's gone. Today's slice with baby chard and kale, leek, mozzarella, ricotta salata, garlic olive oil, and citrus zest was fresh, unique, and seriously good. I'm usually a simple pizza guy, but this one delivered. Absolutely worth the wait. A true Berkeley staple. read more

Probably one of the best pizza places in the Bay! I absolutely love their green sauce--it adds such a great kick which is like a pesto, garlic mustard sauce. The prices are very reasonable (around $25 for one pie). The pizza I had was topped with roasted Yukon Gold potatoes, baby spinach, Valbreso feta, mozzarella, house-made curry sauce (with coconut), fresh lime, and cilantro. It was delicious. My only gripe is that I wish it had some meat, but I get that it's a vegetarian pizza. Still, easily a 10/10. This is a quick-service spot--you pay and get your food right away. And whatever pizza they're making that day is the only one available to order. Service was fine, though there's very limited seating. The ambiance is nothing special, but when I visited, there was live music, which was a nice touch. Highly recommend this place, especially if you're a tourist or just visiting the Bay Area. Overhyped Pizza with a Long Wait This pizza spot is always packed, and while the line moves quickly, the overall experience didn't live up to the hype. The vibe is casual, with limited indoor seating and mostly outdoor seating (first-come, first-served), which is fine, but nothing too special. When we got to the counter, the host didn't greet us, smile, or say anything. Just a quick "what do you want?"--not the warmest welcome. We ordered a whole pie with green sauce, and they only serve one type of pizza on any given day, which that day was a Margherita. The pizza itself is huge, but honestly, kind of underwhelming. The crust is basic, the cheese and toppings are simple, and while it's definitely filling, it didn't blow me away at all. It's a bit oily, and the flavors just didn't do much for me. The crushed tomatoes and basil were decent, but nothing remarkable. The green sauce, though, was the standout--flavorful and a nice touch, but it wasn't enough to save the pizza for me. Honestly, I can see this being the type of pizza you grab after a night of drinking when you're not too worried about flavor. But as for all the hype and five-star reviews, I just don't get it. I hadn't been here in years--since 2010. I came on a Thursday around 5pm and lucked out with parking right in front of Cheese Board, next to the traffic light. I got in line and ended up by the Cheese Board Bakery door (which I don't remember being there before). The wait was only about 5 minutes. There was indoor and outdoor seating, plus a live band playing inside the restaurant. The space is a little tight, but people are in and out--it's meant for a quick bite. The atmosphere was super chill and fun. Customers were respectful and cleaned up after themselves so others could grab a table or chair. While I was ordering, another staff member behind the counter was already listening and prepping at the same time. I got a whole pizza and a large green sauce before my payment even finished processing--that's how fast the service was. The pizza was just like I remembered--thin with a crispy crust. The pizza of the day wasn't anything extraordinary, just a classic mozzarella cheese base. But the house-made tomato sauce and especially the green sauce were absolutely bomb. Toppings were nothing wild--just some arugula--but everything was fresh and tasty. I'll definitely go back again to see if it's like I remember from years ago read more

When at the turn of the century, I was in seminary, I took two of my fellow seminarians down to Cheese Board Pizza (CBP)' One of them, because he had to walk his bicycle for the other two of us were walking and could not otherwise keep up with him, complained the whole way about why we couldn't eat at one of the pizza joints closer to Holly Hill. When we arrived, there was a long line to get into CBP providing further opportunity for complaint. The line moved very quickly, and service was excellent. When we finally got a slice of pizza in my friend's face, he went from a complaining scowl to a grin of joy. It's a very Berkeley place, and you can't really say you've been here until you visited it. read more

An East Bay classic for a reason~ They do vegetarian pizza like no other. The fact that it's always busy even with only one special pizza a day speaks volumes. Upon lining up, I can tell this place is meant for the locals based on the vibes. The workers are pretty nice too. The line looks long but moves quickly. The pizza of the day was a potato curry pizza. HEAR ME OUT, it was one of the best things I've had. I probably wouldn't crave this particular combo often, but I acknowledge that it's special! I never would've ever thought about curry sauce on pizza but it WORKS. I also popped over to the bakery to grab some pastries and a sourdough loaf to take home. I recommend for goodies to bring home for the week. ALSO THEIR GREEN HOT SAUCE IS BOMB. You can buy a container to-go too. Will try to make it over to the East Bay for this sometime again. It's perfect for dipping whatever pizza they are serving! They are very generous with portion size like if you order a full pizza they throw a few extra slices on top! Most recently came on a Saturday at 11:30 when they open and there was already a pretty big line but moved quickly and pizza came out quick and hot! Lots of seating inside and outside! They had jazz music on the day we went, which was really fun with a live singer. Next-door, they have their bakery where you can order different baked goods. They have a fun drink selection. This place is apparently signature Berkeley eats. They have a different pizza flavor every day, which I think is so fun. Next door they also have a cheese shop and bakery. We went for lunch on a Saturday, and there was live music playing. After a little line, we got a whole pie and large green sauce (I saw someone dunk their whole slice in it), it came with the 2 bonus slivers on top, their crust is so crispy and delicious, and this is probably the best pizza I've had. If there's only one thing you can try in Berkeley, let it be this. The best part about studying at Cal for me was this pizza (go bears!) Even if you normally don't like pizza or vegetarian, try this. You won't regret it. The dough is not regular pizza dough, it's sourdough with the right amount of chewiness. MUST eat with the green sauce. Line is always long but it goes very fast. Only one pizza flavor per day but really can't go wrong with any flavor. The ambience is nice with live local band during certain time. read more

Yum yum! Don't be afraid of a little line. They are organized & pros at getting you the best pizza ever as fast as humanly possible! We've been coming here for decades! This day was my fav pizza, cilantro, corn & onion. Fabulous! Their pizzas are veggie only, no meat. One type of pizza each day. Look up online to see what kind they are serving. Whenever around the Berkeley area, we make it a point to stop by Cheese Board and get their unique pizza of the day. If you're vegetarian or vegan, this is the perfect place to grab some pizza. Their pizza is so good, it's even great for us meat eaters! Make sure to always purchase their green sauce. It gives the pizza a nice kick. Oh and don't be scared if you see a long line, the staff here is very quick and efficient! Even if the line goes around the corner, stand and line for their pizza, you will not regret it. Oh, and don't be fooled by other places that try to copy Cheese Board Pizza's One Type of Pizza for the day, this is the OG place and is way better than the imitators haha. If you do decide to eat there, it does get pretty packed. There are benches and tables outside. There's also some stand up tables. Oh and certain days they have live music, which is awesome. We were a bit confused about which line to join. There wasn't a sign indicating whether the line was for their cheese shop or the pizza line, so we initially got in the wrong one. Simple and cool spot! I went on a Wednesday around 6:30pm and there was a line of about 10 people, but it moved quickly. If you have a special request like vegan or gluten free, go to the counter before waiting in line. There was also a live band and a decent amount of outdoor seating. They only have one kind of pizza a day, but the quality was exceptional. They also have this delicious green spicy sauce (medium/mild spicy) and roasted garlic (which they don't advertise). Never disappoints, at least the pizza anyways...well, the lines have grown longer over the years, but it's offset by more seating outside. The crust is the star here, chewy, crunchy and flavorful, and any topping they add is fresh and goes great together. I've never had a bad pizza here. There is only one pizza option but you can opt for gluten free crust but need to ensure you go straight to the counter to let them know so they can get it going. You can buy pizza by the slice, half pie or full. They add a couple of mini slices on top. The line looks long but service goes fast since there isn't too much to consider aside from beverages and a handful of add ons such as soft serve, sauces and a side salad (also one option). The crust is a bit tough and chewy but the oils from the cheese butter it up nicely. read more

The food! The service! The vibes! Loved everything. They only have one type of pizza a day and the day we went, it happened to be mushroom. I despise mushroom and will typically pick off every single piece but I left it on this pizza and I actually enjoyed it - especially when I didn't think about the mushroom fact. When we went (Friday after work), the line was around the block but it moved relatively quick since they don't have options. When we got to the front, the workers were great. Super friendly and even gave us samples of the Bison soft serve (I think this was limited but it was good). Highly recommend the green sauce. I would return for that sauce with any pizza. read more

tldr bay area classic serving up daily flavor pizza with their famous green (hot) sauce and tasty dessert opts like buffalo milk soft serve and chocolate chip cookie i honestly love cheese board and this is coming from a east coaster!! the half pie pizza ($12) is more like a bay area affordable real crispy cheesy garlic bread with some flavor toppings that are different every day similar to arizmendi and i am okay with that......dipped into that slightly spiced herbaceous hot sauce dip ($5) it's such a quality california bite of heaven!! i also got a buffalo milk soft serve with horchata and coconut milk swirl. the chewy chocolate chip cookie was the perfect vessel for the ice cream that was rich and creamy and the chocolate chip started to melt - no words they had amazing live music on sat late afternoon from a local colombian band and the staff were really friendly despite the chaos and busy environment!! pizza is at a very reasonable cost for the bay and i ended up spending $35 for half a pizza and dessert Is it the best "pizza"? no but its about the unique green sauce, the rotational menu, the vibes (music+friendly staff), and (rare) worker owned collective structure that make this a special gem. it's the epitome of what a quality neighborhood joint is meant to be!!! overall i love cheese board and you should too - just make sure to come early since the line can get real long but they move quickly :) food 4.5/5 service 4.5/5 ambiance 5/5 value 5/5 read more

By far the best pizza in town!! It's been years since I've been here and it is still as good as before. I love their simple menu which is 1 style of veggie pizza per day because who needs choices when one tastes great. We decided to stop by on a Saturday afternoon for lunch since we were in the area. We went into the Collective first thinking that they had pizza there but realized that they are a bakery and only sold cheeses and breads. We did get a Asiago Olive bread and it was delicious! The inside was soft and the outside was crispy. Then we proceeded next door to order our pizza. Because my husband doesn't like mushrooms, he ordered one whole pizza without it. There is a separate line for that which was way shorter. The pizza was extremely crispy and full of flavor! Loved that the spinach was a bit burnt and it paired well with the cheeses, pine nuts, and parsley! $24 for a whole pizza is actually not a bad price, especially if you're sharing. I could eat an entire pizza on my own if I wanted to! They are closed Sunday and Monday so best to stop by on Saturday if you can. They also have live jazz music inside which makes it an even better experience, especially on a nice and sunny day! read more

Popular pizza spot in Berkeley and for a solid reason! Cheeseboard often has a line out their door, but the line usually moves fast, and the food is 100% worth it. Cheeseboard rotates their pizza flavor weekly with different flavors, and it's always a hit. They serve thin crust pizza that is loaded with toppings but not overly heavy. I absolutely love their green sauce that comes with the pizza! I'm also a big fan of their ambiance--the store is small but it's always bustling with live music inside and tables for customers to eat their food. It had the Mushroom, red onions, green scallions , and it had a lemon zest which was sour like some in SF. It was a little cheesy and the sourdough crust was soft. It was tasty and you can taste the field to table ingredients in the pizza. They also have interesting pizza like the Cherry Corn Pizza like I saw on my social media feed. When in Berkeley you must try Sliver Pizzeria. It brings its own flavor with a noticeable tang, and it is dense. You need a bagel that will hold up under the pressure of a knife while spreading the thick schmear. Naturally, we ordered as many chicken skewers as possible, and every single one was fantastic. The hearts were especially impressive--soft and tender, which is rare since most places tend to overcook them. The karaage was also top notch. The biggest surprise was the bonjiri. I had to look it up, and once I realized it was basically the chicken equivalent of rich, fatty oxtail-style meat, I knew I had to try it. Holy hell, it was easily the best chicken skewer I've ever had. I would honestly come back just to order multiple of these. The squid ink rice was incredibly savory and filling, and paired with a few beers, this made for such a great evening out. All in all, Ippuku is a must-visit in Berkeley if you're into izakayas.

This worked out fine for our group. The menu had various options and eye-catching beverages! My table ordered 3 versions of the Chu-Hi's. Quite pleasant. I liked my Meyer Lemon Hi, it came with half of a lemon which I freshly squeezed and poured into my drink. I thought that was very fun! The quality of each dish was cooked well. My favorites were the crab croquettes, chicken heart, one of the marinated skewers (I can't recall the name of it), gizzards, and the squid ink fried rice. I'm definitely curious to try the bacon-wrapped mochi at a future visit. The only downfall was that the kitchen was extremely backed up during our visit. It took well over what felt like 20-30 minutes from our 1st order to our 2nd Chef's Choice dish. That negatively impacted our experience, but it happens. I'd like to try Ippuku again and hope there will be less of a delay. Our server was nice & attentive, came around a few times to refill our water.
