Khao Nom could just be content with being a great Thai desert spot, but that doesn't suit them. They make sure that you're full of good food on the way to that final course! The place is cozy and charming, with an industrial decor. Service was attentive and friendly. The food was excellent. We had Moo Yang (barbecue pork butt) and Kao Mun Gai Tod (crispy fried chicken and ginger rice) and both were delicious. Thai iced tea is also a good call, but the real move here is desert. There are a solid twenty items here that you don't usually see in the area, from coconut black sticky rice with egg custard to mung bean pudding, you can't go wrong. There are daily additions like pumpkin in coconut milk that are dependent on what's ripe at the moment. Seriously, you can come here for a month straight just to try a new desert each time, and we're thinking that we just might! Great place.
If you're around Elmhurst, Queens, this is a Thai spot you don't want to miss Khao Nom delivers the true taste of Thai street food with bold, authentic flavors in every bite. From comforting rice dishes and slurp-worthy noodles to vegetarian options, fresh salads, and smoky BBQ, the menu has something for everyone. And save room for dessert -- they have so many dessert options to choose from. The adorable fruit-shaped mung bean sweets are almost too cute to eat, made with smooth and lightly sweet mung bean paste Everything here is packed with flavor, making Khao Nom a true hidden gem for Thai street food lovers.
I have been eyeing this cute little Thai restaurant for a while now because their dessert menu looked interesting. My brother and I decided to go one day and he is a pretty picky person but he seemed to enjoy this restaurant as much as I did. We started off with a salad, the Yum Hed Tod, it looked insane but it was basically just fried enoki with a side salad/dip that was a spicy seafood salad. It was delicious and so crunchy. Then we got the Thai Corn Fritters which was also really good. It came with a sticky sauce, almost like simple syrup but with red onions and cucumbers. The sweetness of the dip went perfectly with the fired corn. Then, my brother got the Pad Thai which was super good, the noodles were a perfect texture and the flavor was also great. Then I got the Kao Moo Kra Tiem which we both thought was just okay, I will definitely have to try something else next time I am there. The flavors were more on the mild end and the sauce was basically just Tabasco. Finally, we got to the dessert part of it but unfortunately the dessert I wanted to try was sold out so they recommended me to try the Tub Tim Grob which was good but the weather was too cold for it. I think I will come back in the summer and try more of their shaved ice items then. Overall service was good. They checked up on us and were very patient with us as well looked over the menu.
This has become one of my favorite places. This restaurant is on the side street, not on the Main road, don't get the restaurants mixed up, because I did haha. The place is small but feels homey. The staff were all friendly and very welcoming. Food, well, it was great. The curry puffs were stuffed and the pastry was flakes and crunchy. Flavor was there and it had some chicken. I missed that part but it as a pleasant surprise. The shrimp cakes were delicious and you can tell it was hand made smashed patties, made it authentic. Now to the tom you soup and noodles by far my favorite. Spices, tangy, just so flavorful and perfect for the cold weather. It was load with shrimp and ground meat, and came with a couple of Wonton chips. Can't wait to come back.
Cute little restaurant/cafe that serves south East Asian desserts and Thai food. Food Menu mostly consists of rice combo dishes, rice dishes and noodles. The variety on the dessert menu is a little insane. Came for lunch and ordered the fried pork belly over rice that came with a soup and cucumbers. I wasn't really a fan of the soup. Didn't have much taste and tasted a lot like msg to me. First bite of the pork belly was delicious. Crispy and flavorful. The sauce was a tad bit sweet for me so I asked for the chili sauce on the side and that worked well for me. After a couple of bites, I noticed that the majority (more than 90%) of the pork was all fat and barely any mixed lean and fatty pieces. Even as a self proclaimed fat lover, I was a little bit overwhelmed by how fatty it was. I'm not a carb lover but to offset the full pieces of fat, I ate most of the rice. I felt like this was definitely not a piece of pork belly that should have been served. Wanted to try the dessert but was feeling a little nauseas after the meal so couldn't really order anything extra to eat.
Been here twice recently and both times the food and service has been spectacular. Authentic Thai flavors and dishes that goes beyond the staples of pad Thai. Their egg crepe, soup noodles, crispy pork were all fantastic. Will definitely keep coming back
Very delicious tom yum noodle soup. Got the medium and even with a high spice tolerance that was spicy. My partner thought the fried chicken was ok. Banana cupcakes were moist and warm. Thai tea was good/strong. I'd come back for tom yum noodle soup if im in the area.
Small restaurant with casual vibes. When we got seated the table was a little dirty but the waitress and kind and quick to clean it up. Corn fritters: My favorite dish but I just love corn in general. The sweet and sour sauce that came with it was delicious with the fried corn fritters. Crab egg roll: Kind of reminded me of a tuna salad stuffed inside of an egg roll, but with crab instead of tuna. It was good, but I probably wouldn't get again. Khao soi: My boyfriend devoured this dish and couldn't stop drinking the curry soup. Personally, I didn't think this khao soi stood out from any others that I've had in the past from other Thai restaurants. The chicken was also a little drier than I would like. Mango salad with crispy fish: Can't go wrong with a mango salad and fried fish! I only wish they cut the fish into smaller pieces so it would blend with the salad a bit more, instead of giving one giant filet beneath all the salad.
Great selection of desserts, and they do both dine-in and takeout! Pandan crepes lived up to my expectations, and my boyfriend really liked the taro rice ball as well. Note that there is a $15 minimum for credit cards.
They heat up all the dessert. 4/5 Tokyo pandan $7- Really good, but wish it was a bit less sweet. I like some places, they're not stingy with the pandan cream/custard filling. 4/5 pandan layer cake $5- Has a strong floral flavor, which may be too strongly scented/tasting for some. Very fragrant & not too sweet. 3/5 coconut jelly $5- This is basically agar, so it's very firm, not soft like the pandan layer cake. Good otherwise.
Incredible food, tastes just like the stuff I had in Thailand. Corn fritters (kao pod tod) - crispy and served with a sweet sauce. Crispy rice taco (buang yuan jay) - crispy on the outside and filled with stir fried vegetables. The spices and carrot are the most notable flavors. Also served with the same sweet sauce. Mock duck salad (yum ped jay) - the mock duck is fried crispy, and the dressing is spicy and funky. Probably my favorite dish. (Not pictured) Pad Ka Pao Gai - my friends enjoyed this one, but I didn't try it. Taro Custard - sweet but not overly so, with a nice cake like texture and golden thread over top. Coconut milk custard - really nice texture and definitely sweeter than the other dessert. Pronounced coconut flavor. The meal worked out to about $25 per person for three people. This was absolutely worth a visit.
Southeast Asian desserts will always have a special place in my heart, especially since I love pandan and coconut. I got here kinda late so had to get everything to go. -Lod Chong: reminded me of a Chendol with the coconut milk, but sweeter and with chewier jellies. Make sure to give it a good mix and would recommend adding in ice like the lady said. -Bah Bin Coconut Pancake: super chewy with a nice crunch from the coconut shreds. Loved how it wasn't too sweet and super snackable! -Kanom Tuay: Loved the slightly salty coconut cream on top. It overall wasn't chewy and felt more like in between a cake and pudding. -Taro Custard: didn't expect it to be so dense and like sponge cake. Loved how it wasn't too sweet but also the taro flavors were more subtle. -Tapioca Pudding: while I liked the corn, crunchy fruits, and tapioca, the pudding had an odd ?artificial taste. The coconut cream on top was thick and also had a weird sweetness to it. It was still an interesting dessert but the flavors threw me off a little. The store had a good amount of seating. They are known for their desserts, but also have savory snacks and casual dishes that I really want to try next time! Credit cards accepted but extra 3%. The lady who took my order was very sweet and nice!
Came here to get their crispy fried chicken with ginger rice and it is always fresh and delicious, especially with their special sauce. Today, their dessert captured my attention. Their Tokyo Pandan is amazing!!! It was sweet with a slight hint of salt. It is soft and the pandan custard is so tasty. The Pia Cakes Mung Bean with Salty Egg was good and has this floral flavor to it which I didn't expect. After the 1st one, it tasted better, but didn't have much mung bean or salted egg flavor and mostly floral. The service is a hit or a miss depending who it is. The restaurant is small and packed with many tables after the new arrangements.

I just got back from my work and I was looking for the good food in Elmhurst. So, I found this place Khao Nom from Yelp !! I thought I would tried some Thai food and some sweet dessert here for take out. Omg!! The excellent staff with nice service gave me a good recommendation. I got the marinated grilled pork with the sticky rice, durien with the sweet rice and Tub Tim Gob. The food and desserts were so good !! Wed. 11/10/21 read more

The desserts were good but the food that my friend got (crab spring rolls) wasn't worth the price. My friend didn't know what she order, since she only wanted spring rolls. So me and her were guessing on what meat was it. At first we thought it was tuna, then chicken. After reading the menu again, we thought this price wasn't worth it because it didn't have a crab meat texture. The dessert I got was taro custard and coconut with sugar palm. The taro was really good, but the coconut one, tasted weird. It was salty than sweet. The middle has the sugar palm inside (not sure what was sugar palm. lol) Taro custard $3 Coconut $2 read more

Their standouts are the unique desserts and drinks. I really love their butterfly pea lemonade and pandan desserts. The crispy shrimp and mango salad dish however was a disappointment. It's similar to the corn fritter appetizer, but instead of corn, the fritters consist of tiny dried shrimps. I felt that the dish was extremely overpriced at $14, especially because you don't get regular sized shrimp. You get the small dried shrimp clumped into a fritter. The fritters were not bad, but I didn't feel this dish was a solid main entree or worth $14. It was like they combined two appetizers (mango salad and shrimp fritters). The mango salad was in sweet sauce similar to the one that came with the corn fritters and was a bit too sweet for me. The sauce seemed a bit syrupy. The Chan noodles were really good and I would order this again. The restaurant has many unique dishes and I will return to try other items. read more

Khao Nom is in a hidden location, GPS will stop at the corner where there is another Thai restaurant, first I thought Khao Nom is in the same building but on a different floor. I had to ask local people to find this place. The restaurant is not big but good enough for a family of five. There are about 8 or 10 small tables, you can see an open kitchen while dining which is good so they will keep it clean. They have various dishes and desserts to choose from including Thai drinks. We were very happy with the quality of food and taste. The service was just okay, kind of slow but not too much of a big deal since she was nice. Would love to stop by again read more

Very good Thai dessert tasty very close to Thai dessert in Thailand price is very reasonable A lot of choices read more
Visit 1: Had their crepes, both sweet and savory were good. Visit 2: Had khao ka pao moo krob, it was really good, ask for medium or mild if you can't handle spice. The pork is perfectly crispy, the soup that comes with it is super tasty (peppery and sweet), and the plating is on fleek Chan noodle was quite spicy, be careful, also a tad chewy from undercooked noodles. One of the shrimp was a bit undercooked. Minus one star for this. The ice cream for $5 was good, you can pick two flavors, I recommend the taro and coconut. It comes with palm seeds, peanuts, jasmine scented sticky rice, and corn (don't be alarmed, this is normal in some Asian countries) read more
Had a great dinner at Khao Nom after seeing it appear in a list of restaurants that Chefs enjoy visiting. We started with the rice taco and Thai corn fritter. Both were very generous portions, with the rice taco in particular large enough to be a whole meal (and my favorite of the two, although the corn fritter has a unique and good texture). The pickled mackarel with chilis and other herbs was unique and aromatic and was good to cleanse the palate. Our mains were both delicious. The dry spice from the Shan Noodle stuck to the tongue in a good way, and the prawns were expertly prepared. The crispy basil pork was simple and delicious and I appreciated the side of a simple chicken broth, which helped clear away some of the spice. We did not try any deserts, which I know is a signature of theirs, so will definitely be returning to give it a try. read more

For $5, a dish of homemade ice cream was satisfying. I picked taro black bean and thai tea flavors and had toppings of palm seeds, sticky rice, peanuts, corn and not sure but one tasted like sweetened plantain or jackfruit? Also tried a crunchy crepe with meringue and egg yolk threads. Went well with the ice cream because it gave the crunch like a cone. So many other desserts to try so will surely go back. I wish they clearly label or list what they offer though so it is easier to pick. Not everything was listed on the menu and no labels on the display case. read more

5 Star Ratings based off of: - Service - Food Quality + Quantity [flavor + portion size] - Cleanliness - Prices - Nice Bathroom Won't write an overly long review - especially since many of the prior reviews explicate the exact sentiments I feel about this place. Great food, great atmosphere, super kind, super tasty, bang for your buck, and just all around fantastic restaurant. The only complaint I had today was that they were out of the pandan custard roll dessert...but that's not even a real complaint! A reason to come back to be honest! ENJOY! read more

A new addition of thai restaurant near Woodside ave, modern chic decor w small and large tables may fit 5 to 6 people. many pre-made traditional thai desserts and drink on display counter, menu is short but creative, I had chan noodle and taco, was really happy w the taco, especially the shell, it's made of flour and eggs, crispy outside and moist inside filled w tangy and citricy veggies and spice! It's definitely a good fusion of both cultures! Bring your cash as they don't take your plastic, the prices are abit steep in the neighborhood in my opinion. read more

Two weeks opened, this Thai restaurant serves delicious food from a relatively short menu, with several apps and some noodle dishes, nothing over $10. They are located right behind the famed Khao Kang, so the assumption is that this is their sister restaurant. I wouldn't be surprised because the quality of food here is just as authentic tasting and equally as delicious. They also have ready made Thai desserts that can be taken to go or eaten at the location. Seating is quite plentiful in this tastefully designed contemporary space. They have large windows that open to allow a cool breeze in while you enjoy your yummy "Chan" noodles. Cash only! read more
Thai desserts in NYC are kind of like an underground thing. Its hard to find when you really want it and hardcore eaters and natives always debate how good the bites are when you actually get them. Khao Nom is a dessert place that satisfies the natives (I brought some with me) and is about as authentic as it can get on this side of the pond. Opened by the owners of the excellent Khao Kang next door, this place focuses more on the sweet side of Thai cuisine, of which there are many choices. My wife came here specifically for the sweet, thin and crispy pancakes topped with sugary egg threads (foi thong) that brought her back to her childhood. We also got a number of other things to try: coconut pudding (tasty), kanom chan (pandan flavored glutinous dessert) and the home made ice cream (more on that below). The traditional Thai desserts were fresh and incredibly tasty. Far better than the hit and miss of getting them from the counter down the street at Sugar or even worse out of the fridge at Sripraphai. The best thing here though was the home made ice cream. We tried the Thai tea and the coconut. The coconut was rich and chock full of coconut taste and came with a bunch of condiments that are popular with Thais (sweet taro, corn etc.) The Thai iced tea ice cream though was really good (tasted just like Thai iced tea) and came with a bit of sticky rice (great texture difference) as well as some other trimmings. For 5 bucks, it was a generous helping. Prices here are very affordable and the decor is fun and clean. Service here is also really good as the staff will explain to anyone what is in each dessert and how it tastes. Big thumbs up, its a great way to finish a meal if you're chowing down next door or down the street. read more

I enjoyed the uniqueness of the food in this restaurant. My friend loved the pandan roll and she couldn't stop eating it. My favorite dish is the fried rice. Although it is nothing special about it, but it reminds me of a homemade fried rice with fried pork gloss. Pad Thai is normally my go to dish but I did not like the prawns because they were not fresh. read more

This is probably a mistake to try their food in Sunday lunch. I usually have no complaints about good new spot thai food. But this spot really make me feel need to leave 1 star for them. Reason 1 The server for bowl is not clean Reason2 The noodle soup we order is warm and not hot at all Reason 3 The pace is super slow, I think they lack of staff working. Not recommmend not returning back. read more

This is a dessert shop owned by Khao Kang, a casual Thai eatery next door. Khao Nom specializes in Thai desserts and offers several savory dishes as well. Their desserts range from $2-5, with their savory dishes ranging from $5-10. My friends and I stopped by after having lunch at Khao Kang. We shared several desserts. Our favorites were the fried sweet potato balls ($4), taro custard ($2), and pandan sticky rice ($2). Our least favorite was the floral rice cake ($2). Khao Nom is the perfect place to grab a quick bite or to enjoy some desserts with friends. It may not be the best for large groups but there are several 4-tops. They also have a clean bathroom, which is a plus. If you're ever in the area and want a quick, sweet pick me up, be sure to give Khao Nom a try! Just be sure to bring cash! read more

This is a (mostly) dessert place operated by the people who own Khao Kang next door. It has many enticing-looking dessert choices for $2 each, as well as as some larger options for $5-6. There is also a savory menu. I started with the taro custard, which was a large serving for $2. It was decent, but not something I'd have again. I was expecting something with a bit more finesse and more custardy. It was essentially like eating a square of taro birthday cake filling. It was just mildly sweet, which I appreciated. I do wish the top had some sort of contrasting texture or flavor. If they could make this custard more delicate and then did a brûlée of the top, it'd be a winner. The better dessert I had was the Thai iced tea ice cream. For $5, you get two scoops of a made-in-house Thai iced tea ice cream. It also comes with a scoop of sweet glutenous rice as well as some toppings. The ice cream itself seemed sort of icy to me. And the flavor was okay, but not great. I think next time, I'd try the Thai iced coffee ice cream instead. I think this dish needs some sort of cream base to bring it all together. read more

A friend's recommendation brought me to the restaurant today. I was ready for some good Thai food. Reviews were solid, pictures look nice, I am ready. Let's breakdown my feast: curry puff, crispy crab roll, crispy rice taco, northern yellow curry chicken, seafood drunken egg noodle and shrimp cake. (1) The curry puff was built nice with a great crust. The mushy paste inside was a dry let down as I would have expected ground chicken and potato. It had a nice kick. (2) Crispy crab roll was "different" it tasted like fermented crab which if you've never had it is an experience. Personally not a fan. (3) Crispy rice taco, interesting choice of a name as it looks like a fried pancake. I like the coconut taste crunch was great. (4) Northern yellow curry chicken was a surprise. I've had Thai curries and was ready for curry, chicken maybe a veggie. This was a giant chicken leg (wonder what that chicken ate) in a vat of curry with two kinds of noodles to add. Curry had a kick but I wasn't a fan of the chicken leg which was tough. It needed to be cooked more in the curry, not worth $10. (5) seafood drunken noodle was intense. The combination was good but I think it would have been better with flat noodles. (6) shrimp cake, in my opinion the best part of the meal. Imagine fritters but with shrimp. This was well done. All in all I would return for a second chance but at least now I know what not to order. read more
