To most onlookers, To Laiko doesn't look like much, considering it's a tiny shop located just off of the Astoria Blvd N/W stop on the sleepy 23rd Ave. Folks who aren't looking for it are sure to miss it, with the exception of the older Greek guys sitting outside. To Laiko represents the kinds of Greek-owned businesses that are disappearing by the minute in Astoria. It just so happens that this one sells Greek pastries and coffee. While the outside awning notes "The Little Coffee Shop", to my understanding "To Laiko" means "The people's" in Greek. I'm not sure how long they've been around, but they've been a fixture for as long as I've stepped foot in the borough (#1). This has certainly been a place that has been for the people (#2), which is always a great sign. They're among the only folks to my knowledge that sell authentic bougatsa, a breakfast phyllo rich specialty pastry that skews sweet and is enjoyed best with tea and/or coffee. They also have an excellent selection of spanakopita, which is Greece's most famous pastry containing feta and spinach. (#3) The kasseri cheese pie is also not to be missed, along with koulouri (sesame circular bread rolls), savory pastries, and the occasional loukamade (aka Greek donut). Prices aren't back breaking, but they've crept up over the years. While I think they accept credit card, it's always best to go with cash here to avoid any upcharges. Service from Angela is sweet and cordial and I prefer getting a drink with several pies on the go since seating is minimal. My hope is that this review helps others find them, since this is a place not to be missed. I thought I reviewed this place before but I guess I forgot! Here we go. I spent my summers in Greece as a kid and my entire family is off the boat Greek, so Greek food is something I grew up with and have a great deal of familiarity with. I hadn't had a freddo espresso in years (since I was last in Greece) and the one I had here was the best I've had in the US. It was perfect! The tyropites were the best I've had in the US as well. The lady who works there could have been friendlier, which is something I've come to expect from Greek eateries in the US when I come in speaking flawless Greek, but I didn't get a nod/smile, nor did she seem to care that I told her these were the best versions I've had here in the US. Anyways, the service was quick and decent. The spot is very very small and feels authentic to a hole in the wall place you might find in Athens. On the day I went there was no place to sit outside so I just walked and ate. Came back later and got two more tyropites, which were just absolutely phenomenal. Highly recommended place! The only reason I can't give 5 stars is because of the lack of warm hospitality but the food and coffee was 5/5 easily for the price! read more

Whoever said "the best eateries are small" is on the money with this gem of Astoria. A cozy spot that turns orders quickly and cheerfully, To Laiko is one of my regularly visited places for Spinach Pie, Baklava, Greek Coffee & espresso drinks. Super friendly people working behind the counter and a roster of amazing neighborhood people conversing outside of it. You won't find a place much more enjoyable to shop at than this one. read more

This tiny coffee shop has been around in Astoria since I can remember! It's a very good spot to go to before you hop on the train if you want a quick coffee and breakfast to go. They make awesome frappes and tiropitas ( cheese pies). If you're in the mood for something tasty and sweet you should definitely try their mpougatsa ( a custard filled fillo dough treat with powdered sugar and cinnamon mmm). I always make a stop here when I come to New York. They have one of the best Frappes (greek iced coffee) around. This is literally a tiny little store front near the train station. The owner is a wonderful Greek man which allows me to practice my Greek. Along with amazing coffee some of the best homemade spanakopita. Brought my friend said it is the best she has ever had. This is also where I stop for my bougatsa fix. Los Angeles does not have this quality unless my mom makes it. Highly recommend. read more

In an area brimming with Greek eateries, this old-time bakery stands out for its authenticity ... and specialized offerings of all things phyllo (filo). Their savory treats like the spinach and meat pies are delicious and always served fresh. Great place for a quick coffee and snack. A personal favourite though is the Greek dessert galactoboureko (custard filled pastry). I always try these at any restaurant that offers it and in my opinion 'To Laiko' has the BEST galactoboureko this side of the Atlantic. EXCELLENT mom and pop shop. They open early (before 5 a.m., thank God, for those of us who have to get up that early).
