We had the spicy miso ramen, katsu ramen (we ordered tonkatsu but they brought semi-dry ramen noodles with the fried pork katsu on top), bento boxes, and tempura shrimp. First, the spicy miso ramen was super rich and unctuous, but not greasy. Right spice level, and all the bits (corn, mushrooms, etc.) were all cooked well and not mushy or rubbery. Bravo! My new favorite place for Ramen in Austin. Our friends, who lived in Japan for 5 years and taught us the correct way to break apart the chopsticks and other etiquette said the the katsu, although not the correct order, was just like in Japan as was the tempura dipping sauce. I tried some of the katsu and it was perfect. Moist and tender with a crunchy but not too thick breading. Literally the best katsu I've had, so what a happy accident. I am going back for the katsu curry dish soon. The staff were friendly, the restaurant decor was nice and cozy, and both positively added to the experience without being over the top. read more

I was kinda skeptical to eat here, but I was pleasantly surprised. I got the tonkatsu ramen and it wasn't terrible. The broth is a little salty, but the noodles had a nice bite to them. Price wasn't terrible and there's plenty of parking at the restaurant. The server was nice and accommodated our large group. Food came out pretty quickly and it seemed like everyone enjoyed the ramen. read more

Our whole family truly loves Kanji Ramen--it's become our go-to spot for celebrating birthdays, enjoying date nights, or simply treating ourselves to a comforting bowl of delicious ramen. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate, reminding me of the charm of Chinatown in London, with a touch of romance in its small, welcoming space. What really makes this place special, though, is the kindness of the staff. They consistently provide warm, attentive service that makes every visit feel memorable. In our experience, it's some of the best food and service you can find in Northwest Austin. read more

Far from the maddening crowds, this North Austin spot is an underappreciated gem, serving up one of the most alarmingly convincing plant-based broths I've encountered. The Veggie Ramen is clearly marked with a "V" and still, I had to ask more than once to make sure there was no fish involved. The flavor was almost TOO good for comfort. Seaweed is their secret for extracting such a powerful oceanic essence, potent enough to rival any animal-based broth. Even the noodles are legit, achieving the ideal balance of slippery and chewy, staying pert in the hot soup without turning to mush. Crowing this treasure are cubes of soy sauce-marinated tofu and garlic chips that truly bring everything together. It may not look the most impressive when it arrives at the table, but don't judge this book by its cover. You could easily swap this for an omnivore's order without objections. read more

The food was pretty good! And that says alot bc I'm picky on ramen.. I had a really great spot on Anderson but the chef moved away two years ago and I couldn't find a decent shop since. But this place broth and noodles are nice and the service is well too I can hear at least three times and each time the experience is pretty good. read more

The Spicy Miso ramen is very flavorful. I also like the texture of their noodles. And they have a good egg that goes along with the ramen. I wanted to try their handmade dumplings but they were out so I got the gyoza which was not bad. Their regular pork ramen I think is maybe not flavorful enough for me though, so definitely prefer the Spicy Miso ramen. read more

Ordered take out and were offered a $10 shrimp tempura add on so I said yes. Three sad pieces of tempura arrived. Worse, the ramen broth was not like any other ramen I've ever had. Tasted like miso soup - something that is great when given as a small appetizer but I certainly didn't order miso soup as an entree - I ordered pork based ramen. Had to add some soy sauce so I could choke it down but overall beyond disappointed. read more

Came in on a weekday night and we were the only customers, but I actually really enjoyed the ramen. I got the Kanji signature and added extra chashu and veggies which I felt were very inexpensive to add on. The ramen felt like a rather big portion and I enjoyed that the broth wasn't as salty as other places. The inside is pretty cute though the restaurant is located in a rather quiet complex. The food took a while to come out despite us being the only customers but the service was friendly. I would definitely come back here for a casual ramen night. read more

I wanted a nice, hot bowl of ramen for dinner. I read the reviews and it sounded nice. It is a bit of a haul from Round Rock. Is it worth the drive? Maybe if you ran out of ramen places and wanted something new. Making the drive for the sake of ramen, you may leave a little disappointed. All the ingredients are good. It just didn't feel like everything together amounted to more than your average ramen. A little bland for my taste. Plus, it had a bit of an aftertaste. It took me a bit to get used to this. The restaurant is nice. Light music plays that you will know. It wasn't busy, which made it very relaxing. Parking wasn't too bad. There were quite a few cars around 6pm but there was still some parking. read more

Small little ramen shop off of HWY 183. Overall the restaurant has decent amount of table to sit at and the vibe is okay (little dark and cozy feel) There are menus near the door when you enter and you order at the counter when you are ready. If it isn't busy the cashier will let you pick your table and you just come up when you are ready to order. Ordered the Kanji Ramen Signature Ramen and Tonkotsu Ramen. Right off the bat, I noticed the egg was over cooked already. I ate the Kanji Ramen and the broth was okay not too salty which was great. The bamboo on the other hand tasted like it just came out of the can raw and had that can taste still. The chashu was tender had some flavor to it. read more

IMHO, this place has delicious ramen that's as good as (or better) than the other fancy shmancy ramen places around the city. Compared to the other hip places, this is almost "divey" and feels like a "mom and pop" place. We ordered different bowls of ramen, and were all happy with our orders. Aside from the spicy bowls we ordered that could have been a little spicier (not pictured), all the broths had deep rich flavor. The pork was delicious and tender. The noodles were the perfect texture. All the added ingredients were great. read more

A group of friends and I decided to meet here for lunch. This is a small little ramen shop located inside a plaza area with plenty of parking. The food was perfect and portions were generous. Lots of items on the menu looked great, from several different types of ramen, starters and small dishes, as well as sushi rolls. I got the Little Kanji since I knew that ramen is pretty filling. The kid's ramen included pork bone soup with soy sauce based seasoning chashu, wood ear mushroom, ajitama egg corn, nori. It was delicious! They are closed on Mondays and hours are 11am to 8pm Tuesday-Sunday. read more

Not sure if the quality of this place has deteriorated but I had a bad experience with food ! It was a total mood off ! We decided to have ramen in this cold austin weather and after seeing so excellent review me and husband went here to dine in . Worst experience when it comes to food! Ordered a veggie ramen and spicy veggie ramen along with crispy tofu ! Just the tofu was Ok but the ramen was a mere disappointment!! My veggie ramen hardly had any veggie of any flavor .. basically the bowl was filled with salt water with loads of noodles ! Nothing else ! Paid almost $50 for 2 ramen and a side which was just bowl of salt. Water with noodles one spicy and one not ! Super expensive and no quality ! Will not go back here ! read more

I've decided to branch out from Tatsuya when it comes to ramen in Austin, and I'm so glad I tried this place. I got the signature kanji ramen to go. When I took the lid off the container the smell was *incredible.* I tried the both on its own before I added it to the bowl, and my instant reaction was "Damn!" And the two together? Heaven. I practically inhaled the whole thing, it was SO GOOD. If this and Tatsuya's OG got into a knife fight, I think Kanji's bowl would be the winner. I'm already trying to convince myself that getting ramen two days in a row would be terribly decadent, which is why I shouldn't go back for more tomorrow. You, however, should ABSOLUTELY go. It's worth it! read more

So stumbled a upon this gem today. Was really craving Ramen. I ended up getting a seaweed salad and a Spicy Miso Ramen. The heat was perfect not to intense. The portion was a generous but not overwhelming one. The broth flavor was very full and satisfying and the egg was delicious. The seaweed salad was great I think it enough if you wanted to share. ( I didn't ) Flavor of the seaweed salad was also very well balanced nothing to intense but still distinct enough to to appreciate the dish. I highly recommend if you are looking for a new Ramen place. I'll be going back for sure. read more

The ingredients at Kanji Ramen are delicious, for sure, but I was underwhelmed by my bowl of ramen. It just seemed like... a small portion? I wanted bigger pieces of pork in my tonkotsu ramen. I wanted more noodles. I am not a big eater but I finished my bowl and was still a little hungry. That shouldn't be the case with a ramenya. A friend and I got there right at opening at dinnertime, so service was prompt and good. We were the only ones in the restaurant for a little while, though there were people in and out getting to-go orders. We expected it to be a lot busier, but maybe we're the only ones who eat at 5, who knows. I want this place to succeed, but I also want larger portions. read more

We were around the area and craving some warm ramen on a cold day and stopped in for lunch. Relatively small restaurant in a hidden little retail center off the highway with ample parking both in front and behind the building. I think the owner was the one working the counter and was very kind. Menu was robust but not overwhelming. Prices felt a tad high but this has been going on across Austin so can't say surprised The ramen was good, but not great. Broth was hearty and had a balanced flavor. The add-IBA (corn, pork belly, spicy bomb) were also good. It was lighter on the deep umami savoriness that some other ramen shops like Tatsuya have but will still satisfy the ramen itch. A bit out of the way for us so unlikely we'll be back but worth a stop if you're nearby! read more

Pretty solid ramen! Wasn't anything too crazy but a pretty good option overall. I got the tonkonsu ramen and crispy tofu. The ramen had a rich bone flavor and was very filling. 1. Kanji Ramen Signature Ramen my friend and i both had this! the broth was super flavored and not too thick or light, the noodles were chewy. definitely weren't hard and gross like many ramen places! the egg also mixed well with the broth, along with the bamboo shoots 2. Spicy Miso Ramen another friend got this and i tried her noodles-- super delicious! not shown in my pic, but there was a red spicy sauce that complimented her bowl. i even took some of it for my noodles lol anyway, the man at the front was extremely nice. it was quiet around 6 pm on a friday when we went, though more people started walking in around 7. the interior is extremely cute, the restroom was clean, and there were coloring pages at the front as well! seems kid-friendly definitely bringing another friend here to try! read more

Worst restaurant ramen I have ever had. Offensively bad, even. The ajitama was hard, stone cold, and clearly hadn't been marinated very long. The bamboo was somehow see through and flavorless. The pork belly was unseasoned and tough, how does a restaurant make tough pork belly?! The broth, my g-d the broth, was thin - almost clear - with some undissolved bits and no richness. Finally, the noodles were bland, because the broth was thin. This can't be their normal fare, which is even more upsetting. Waste of time and money. read more

There's certainly no shortage of premium ramen joints in Austin, and today we decided to try Kanji. It's above average, but doesn't quite reach the perfection of its competitors. It's located in a strip mall, but for ramen joints, that's more of a plus than a minus. The interior is small, but cute, with a graffiti mural on the North wall. We ran into our first hiccup almost immediately after walking in. We went up to the cashier, where the nice owner directed us to sit down at a table and he would take our order. Then he left into the back of the kitchen. We waited...and waited...and waited. Eventually he came back out, then he directed us back up to the cash register to order. What? I got the sense they are understaffed, and perhaps he was trying to match the flow of orders to the kitchen? Either way, it was strange to have to wait when there wasn't a line. There were two other couples ahead of us that had already ordered. Back at our table we waited some more. I estimate it was 15-20 minutes before our ramen came out. My wife got the Kanji Signature ramen, which was clearly the winner. It has an intense pork flavor that was incredible, really good balance, probably the best "house" ramen that I've ever had. My spicy mi-so was so-so. I thought it was a touch too salty and lacked a depth of flavor. My wife disagreed, she noted that many bowls of miso ramen have a woody/bitter flavor which I like, but she appreciated that it wasn't present in Kanji's ramen. We both agreed they nailed the heat level. Certain ramen spots can have very varied heat levels in their mi-so hot (looking at you Tatsu-ya!). The other weird thing was that my egg was cold, as if it had just come out of a chiller. Kanji was good, but after tip our two bowls of ramen + a bun was nearing $50. Service was kind, but slow. There was a constant flow of folks coming in after us, and I couldn't help but wonder how long they were going to wait before they actually got fed. Ultimately I think there's better, cheaper ramen to be had in Austin, but if you like creamy pork base ramen, the Kanji signature is unparalleled. read more

Yummy Ramen spot! I ordered the signature Ramen bowl and it tasted amazing, especially on a cold afternoon. The signature Ramen had a mix of various ingredients: 4 slices of pork, bok choy, half an egg, nori, seaweed, bamboo shoots, corn. All of which went delicious together and complemented the ramen all too well. Unlike a lot of Ramen restaurants, the broth was not too salty which is why I enjoyed this meal because believe it or not, the broth is easy to mess up. The broth is what holds everything together and the critical part of the bowl. The restaurant is small but had room enough to allow ~12 tables for dine in customers. When I went to eat for lunch on a Saturday afternoon, it was busy with limited spots to sit down but we still managed to sit at a table. However, there is plenty of parking spots as the restaurant is located in a plaza. Overall, this place is worth trying if you're willing to venture out and try something tasty! read more

A-MA-ZING! Highly recommend & it'll be the best decision You will walk out of here with a very happy & satisfied stomach. I ordered the Kanji Ramen (their signature ramen). When we got our ramen, the noodles needed to be separated a bit but when I took a spoonful of the broth, I felt my eyes get bigger with surprise. Broth is incredible - full of rich flavor, I love the garlic-y taste & each spoonful was better than the last. The ramen had the right amount of meat & it was sliced perfectly so you're not struggling to fit it in your mouth. It also comes with some mushrooms, corn & an egg. The whole bowl was just amazing. The noodles weren't hard & was able to absorb all that incredible broth. Everything about this bowl was PERFECTION. The service was also great. Yes you have to order your food at the cashier & then they'll serve you. But the owner saw we were dining with a newborn & he asked us if we wanted him to turn down the music & he did just that. Very good service & very nice. Overall, highly recommend. I would definitely come back here & will know that I will leave here happy all the time. read more
