Never again. After many years of patronage, my husband and I went to J Gilbert's for a joint celebration of birthday and the night before closing on our dream home. Despite having reservations, and the restaurant being about 1/3 full, we were shuttled to a space at the very very rear of the restaurant and ignored. The air conditioning was so high that my food was cold before I could eat it (the folks at the table next to us complained to no avail). I have never been treated so a poor fashion, and I will miss our formerly go to special occasion spot. read more

I hate leaving negative reviews but yesterday's poor dining experience warrants one for this restaurant. I would have given 1 star for last night but I've been here before and know that they can be great so decided to leave an extra star. My husband and I came here to celebrate my birthday (my choice) with my brother and his fiance (first time guests) yesterday. When I come here with my husband, we usually get the seafood platter (serves 2-3 people) and we are usually very impressed by the quality and quantity of the dish. So yesterday, we decided to order the large platter (serves 4-6) and the whole table was ready to be blown away (especially because I raved about it so much to our guests). DISAPPOINTMENT #1: the large platter was NOwhere close to being double the size of the small platter!! Granted, we asked them to substitute half the oysters with other things (I'm pregnant and prefer not to eat anything raw), which was done before without any problem since I've gotten pregnant. When we asked the manager about the portion, he apologized for the miscommunication (apparently, the chef got confused with our substitution request on half the oysters) and brought us a plate of extra shrimps. Note that even with extra shrimps, the portion of the large platter was petty!! Recommend ordering the sample platter, and stay away from the large!! BEWARE: but guess what?? The same manager later tried to charge us for the extra shrimps. When we inquired about it, he "lowered" the charge but we weren't going to have that either!! I mean, who brings out a comp then tries to charge for it?? He ended up completely taking it off the bill but not without a fight. Really?? You would rather ruin someone's dining experience over a few dollars?? DISAPPOINTMENT #2: my brother also ordered a 6oz filet mignon/crab cake combo with mashed potatoes and garlic broccolini. His "medium rare" steak was at best medium (if not borderline medium well) and the broccolini was so overcooked(?) that the stems were rubbery and chewy. He decided to suck it up and eat it (though certainly not a $46 experience he was hoping for) since we already had a debacle with the seafood platter. However, how does a steak house get their steak so wrong like this?? Perhaps the chef was already irritated by our table.. To say the very least, it was one of the worst birthday dining experiences I've ever had. It certainly wasn't cheap either but NOT one of us walked out feeling happily satisfied (we were full but not in a joyful way). My brother and his fiance, first time guests, were so not impressed (perhaps I hyped it up too much). And my husband and I won't be returning for a very long time either. Way to lose loyal patrons!! My family and I chose this restaurant for our Father's Day Brunch. The brunch buffet, which they offer every Sunday, was fairly priced and featured several delicious dishes (unlimited access to the Mac-n-Cheese in Lobster Cream is in itself a winning deal). The panna cotta was exceptional and their seafood fresh. The reception service, however, was below par. First, we arrived 5 minutes before our reservation time but had to wait around 30 minutes. They should be able to gauge the pace of buffet service since they do it every week, despite it being a holiday. The girl who showed us to our table was unfriendly and uninformed about the restaurants offerings. The servers, in contrast, were very polite. So my son and I took the wife in for dinner, and we ordered off the Mother's Day Price Fixe menu. The food was good, and on par with previous visits. The issue here was the service. Our waitress, K---, never brought bread to our table. Add to that my water glass was emptied 15 minutes into it and stayed empty for over an hour. I watched as the adjacent server refilled water glasses four times at two different tables....so glad I had water in the car to hydrate after the meal. Maybe I could have asked for the refill, but when you are spending near $200 for three people to eat, attention to detail should be included. Throw in the dirty bread plate when we were seated (It looked like someone had wiped a knife off on it at a previous sitting. Maybe I should be glad we never had the chance to use the bread plates.) So for all that, three stars on principle. Add to that the asparagus was undercooked and we are at two. All that said, the filet was very good and cooked perfectly to order and the maple glazed salmon was both delicious and a huge serving. I have no idea how anyone could hate on the food here. Seriously, it was freaking delicious! I ordered the rack of ribs with asparagus and pablano potatoes au gratin. The ribs were cooked perfectly, they were lightly sauced with a very tasty BBQ sauce, and they tasted fantastic. I really enjoyed the potatoes as well. My wife ordered the filet and it was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious. She ordered the mashed potatoes and creamed corn to go with it. Both of her sides were delicious. Our customer service was also great. The hostess seemed a little confused that we were coming in so close to closing, be she was nice. Our waitress was awesome. She was very knowledgeable of the menu which was a big plus since it was our first time eating here. My only real complaint is with the desserts. The Creme Brulee, although tasty, was very shallow so it made the caramelized sugar on top seem like a sheet of glass. The ramekin should be smaller so the custard is thicker (just my personal opinion, like I said, it was still delicious). Now for the coconut cake. That seems to be the favorite this place so I had to try it. I love coconut and I love cake. Well, the cake was moist and delicious. The problem I have is that the cake was covered in coconut, but didn't really taste like coconut, and was almost ten dollars and it was a very small piece. I'm not a steak person, but I love the seafood options here and the PORK CHOPS! I feel like I never seen pork chops on menus anymore and it is very disheartening. Luckily, this place has enormous ones! The best dishes: -Pork Chop! With mushroom pile on the side and creme brulee for dessert -Scallops! With mushroom pile on the side and creme brulee for dessert -Salmon! It is so good and has some kind of maple glaze on it. Get it with the mushroom pile and creme brulee for dessert. -Crab Soup! Their crab soup is amazing, if served in a small portion. One of my favorite crabby soups in the area. The only problem with this place is that its expensive. It doesn't look expensive from the outside, but inside it is swanky and there are always fancy cars in the parking lot. I have only been here for special occasions, not just for a dinner night out. The small appetizer crab soup for instance, is more than $8! This is not one of those places where you can save a lot of money by pairing up two appetizers. Oh, and they have wine flights! And be sure to get the creme brulee for dessert, and if you like mushrooms, the mushroom pile is a great side! My wife had the Cesar salad, top sirloin, and berries n cream dessert. All were prepared perfectly and were delicious. Asparagus and green beans were fresh and crunchy. I had the crab bisque, full rack of ribs, and the chocolate velvet cake. The portions were huge! Enough ribs for three people! Mashed potatoes and mushroom risotto were also excellent. I went here for dinner with a large group of friends for restaurant week. My overall rating for this place is a 4.5. The service was ok that night. I think it's because they were busy. A few sides dishes got mixed up or missing. The server brought out the correct sides shortly after the mixed up and they were complimentary. The food were all delicious and cooked nicely. Their whole menu was also available during restaurant week. My husband and I opted to order from both the restaurant week menu and the regular menu. This way, we were able to try as many of their dishes as possible. We had: - Pork Chop with mashed potatoes and string beans. The pork chop was nice and juicy and the mashed potatoes was deliciously creamy. - Steak & crab cake with brussel sprouts and wild mushroom risotto. The steak was cooked perfectly as asked "medium rare" and the crab cake....oh my lord...every bite was crab cake heaven! - Crab bisque soup, I have mix feeling about this soup. I think it was a bit salty. However, a few days later I kept on thinking about this soup.....maybe it was made salty to be memorable? Huh? - Creme brulee for dessert, I don't think you can ever go wrong with having this as a dessert. It was creamy and it has the perfect balance of sweetness. Each year for our anniversary my husband and I head out to an upscale steakhouse for dinner. We usually budget approximately $200 for this dinner and because it is only once a year we don't mind if we go a little over if the meal, service and ambiance of the place warrants it. Unfortunately we quickly discovered that J Gilberts is no where near the level of restaurants that we are used to for this outing such as Morton's, Ruth's Chris, The Capitol Grill, Flemings, etc. I would say that J. Gilberts is a step up from Longhorn which, while good does not rise to the level of quality of the others mentioned. Pros: Both my husband's and my steak were delicious! I got the 8 oz. filet and he got the Kansas City Strip. I ordered and paid extra for Béarnaise Sauce that was very good as well. That is basically where the good ended. For sides we got the au gratin potatoes for him and the Yukon mashed potatoes for me and we both got grilled asparagus. The sides were mediocre at best. Both potatoes were infested with onions which if properly noted on the menu, we would not have ordered. The asparagus was limp and puny. Maybe they should call it baby asparagus and try to pull it off as a gourmet dish. Desserts of cheesecake and chocolate velvet cake were completely forgettable. Unfortunately the worst part of the evening was the service. Our server was rather new, had little knowledge of the menu and barely checked on us throughout the meal. In comparison, the server at the table next to us visited that table 5 times during the course of our meal. We are also used to the server acknowledging the anniversary and asking if they could take a photo of us during the course of the meal or commemorate the evening in some other way. Our server did nothing to make our evening special. It was just like any other night which was disappointing. For $150 we expected a better overall experience. We decided to go to J. Gilbert's on Valentine's Day because it was close by, and we'd been wanting to check it out. First, they seated us at an unstable folding table that had been set up just for the holiday so we asked to be seated elsewhere, which was not a problem. It was understandably a little more tightly packed than usual for the holiday. The service was pretty good considering how packed they were. We we promptly given the wine menu and bread. I enjoyed the truffle butter for the bread. We both ordered the pre-fixed menu that they have all the time, not just for Valentine's day. It's a great deal for the price at a steakhouse. There were so many things on the menu I would have liked to ordered. I really like the options! My husband ordered the oyster appetizer, was great, and I ordered the crab bisque, which was poured in the bowl over fresh crab at your table so it was piping hot. It was so creamy and delicious. I could have eaten more. We both ordered steaks for dinner and a lobster tail. Both were cooked as ordered and had a great flavor. I ordered the chocolate cake. It was pretty good, not amazing, but I would order it again with this menu. You might think that my review is biased since I worked here about three years ago, but I just visited the other day and I love the place just as much as I did when I worked there! I think this place is one of the best, if not the best, steak restaurants in McLean when you consider taste and value. The Palm is over-hyped, Ruth Chris is overpriced and don't even get me started with Wildfire. It doesn't even compare! We started off with the maytag chips (one of things many things they are known for) with bleu cheese and the cheese sauce wasn't too sharp and the chips were perfectly crisp. We also got the crab cakes (also good) and the calamari which are tasty too. They come with carrots and fried jalapenos which offer a bite of spice! For my entree I went with the prix fixe which I think is an awesome deal. I got the crab bisque, then crabcake (yes more crab) and steak combo. My steak was perfectly cooked to my medium as requested and had their signature wood fired flavor. It comes with dessert so I got the cheesecake. All of this for under $40! I've been here about three or four times - one for an anniversary, one for a birthday and one just for drinks. Each time was pleasant, not over the top (service wise), but the food definitely was. I'm very picky about where I get my crab cakes (don't ask why because I don't know either), but I decided to try them out here. Wonderful, is all I have to say. The fish was cooked just to my liking, with vegetables a plenty and melt-in-your-mouth mashed potatoes. For dessert the apple crumb or the chocolate cake are incredible. I do think, however, my favorite part is the dirty martini list, with your choice of vodka, and green olives (plain, or stuffed with pimento, blue cheese, or garlic). MMMMM. I've been lucky, unlike some other reviewers, and have had friendly and helpful wait staff. The only down part is it IS expensive. Came for mother's day dinner, started out with the complimentary serving of bread, and an order of calimari and raw oysters. I tried to order the 24 oz porterhouse, it was $54 but I figured it would be worth it at such an establishment. They were out. The prime rib was my second choice. They were out. I had to settle for a veal steak, went for it rare since I was still in the mood for some pink steak. The appetizers were amazing, the bread was freshly baked, and the sides to my entree were prepared exceptionally well. Unfortunatly, the veal steak itself was lukewarm on serving. It was well cooked as per my request, but had obviously sat out for a bit before serving. The meat's quality was suberb and extra tender. The lobster mac and cheese was delightful as well as the grilled asparagus that was my second side. Although the food was appetizing, we were not told of the lack of ribeye and porterhouse until after we had ordered our meal. Love this place. Rated Restaurant of the Year in McLean. hehehe! I've been here twice, both times for a holiday office lunch. Last year I got the tilapia which was fantastic. This year I went with the Lobster Cobb Salad which is AMAZING and comes with huge chunks of lobster! SO GOOD! Love their sourdough bread. My officemates were pleased with their choices as well: salmon, ribeye potpie & salad, wedge salad. I will say do NOT order the lobster mac and cheese. It is NOT good at all, nor is it worth the money. Its not even cheesy like a mac and cheese should be. I've had better lobster mac elsewhere. I went to Sunday Brunch there last week at about 1:15, and while there was an ample selection of hot plates, the food was vastly overdone (vulcanized eggs that you had to saw through, greasy cold congealed breakfast meats, the shrimp and salmon were unavailable and the carving table didn't have prime selections--the roast beef was well done and cold. I watched a server pour new bacon in over old bacon, which explains the cold, unappetizing bits I encountered, pre-pour, as they'd probably sat in that serving pan the entirety of lunch hour. The buffet selections were patently inedible, though the made to order waffles were good! Still, 25.00 for three squares of waffle is a bit much! Last night my family and I met at J.Gilbert's for my uncle's birthday. I had never been there but had driven past it many times, so I was pretty excited to see the inside. First off, the atmosphere is fantastic. Lots of exposed brick, dark wood, ambient (some people would say dark) lighting. Very attentive and nice staff, and at 6:00 when I arrived the bar was pretty much packed. We met at the bar for drinks first, and as a party of 10 it could have been a little too much. Our server in the bar area was fantastic, and the bartender made every drink absolutely perfectly. They accommodated our large party without even a look of irritation. Also, half-price bottles of wine every Monday night? Sign me up! Our dinner reservation was at 7:00 and we were seated promptly at 7. It was a bit cozy, but you have to expect that with a party of 10 adults. Our server, Ali, was absolutely amazing. We're a loud, indecisive Irish family and he was incredibly patient, joked around with us, etc. Their wine selection is great and their cocktail menu (although I didn't try any) seemed very eclectic and fun without being too fruity or girly or fussy. The actual food was incredible. Possibly the best prepared filet I've had in years. Poblano au gratin potatoes were to die for and not overly buttery and cheesy. The portions were absolutely perfect, aka everyone had room for dessert. The creme brulee was probably the best I've had in a very long time, however the key lime pie was interesting. I'm very much a key lime pie traditionalist--graham cracker crust, key lime custard-like center, whipped cream on top. They do theirs with a shortbread crust (I think), the center had the right flavor but was more of a flan or mousse consistency, and had a meringue topping and came with a side of what I think was a mango sorbet. All in all, amazing food, great atmosphere, attentive staff, near-perfect bar. We ended up being there for almost 4 hours talking and laughing and just enjoying the food without being rushed, and it was one of the best dining experiences I think I've ever had. read more

I highly recommend having a reservation for dinner, and plan on making an evening of the experience. They have an extensive wine selection, so don't be shy, ask the server for their recommended wine pairing, and try one of the specials, since they change these options frequently. Great ambiance for a night out with friends, an anniversary, or a business meal. The bar area is also great for hosting a casual hangout, especially during happy hour. The restaurant has great ambience (good for date nights!) and our waiter was very friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, particularly about their extensive wine selection. I got the filet combo: filet and seared georges bank scallops with asparagus and yukon smashed potatoes. My steak was cooked well, the scallops were divine, and who could go wrong with yukon gold potatoes. Poor presentation always bothers me, but I guess I shouldn't expect anything from a steakhouse other than a hunk of meat slapped onto a plate. Good food and great service! read more

We kicked off the start of restaurant week here with lunch. After extensively going through all the list of restaurants and reviewing thier menus we decided to go here because its a place neither of us have been to. They definitely did not disappoint. This has probably hit the top of our best experiences. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable. He helped us decide on a few items. The biscuits they bring out are to die for. So warm and moist. It even comes with a recipe card so you can try and make it at home. The steak and salmon were cooked to perfection. Everything was amazing. We even loved the table because we were right next to a fireplace. Our drinks were promptly refilled every time we reached about half way with out us even saying anything. We made a reservation but still had to wait for about 15 minutes...ughhh. So we have lived within a 15 minute drive of this restaurant for over 10 years now & never visited. We were excited about finally going there. Definitely did NOT live up!! The excitement was ruined first by the additional wait, then we got a rookie waiter who was horrible, but luckily the food was ALRIGHT. Yes, that correct, alright. If I am going to pay $25+ for an entree, I am going somewhere else. The rich, snotty old people can have their J. Gilberts! The restaurant wasn't too busy either so we were confused why it took so long for our waitress to come by our table. Our water glass were only refilled once in the 2.5 hour time we spent there, we waited at least 20 minutes for dessert, our friends side was either forgotten about or took too long in the kitchen- by the time he finished his main course we were told they were waiting on the side still so we passed. Food was subpar. We all ordered steak and were left unimpressed. Very underwhelming. Bathrooms were not clean with over flowing trash. I've had their brunch a while back and remembered food being pretty good. I made a reservation for dinner this time for an important family gathering, since the location and parking is convenient and the ambience is quiet and private. First, service was slow. We were left alone for a while until I had to ask someone for our server. I felt like the timing was always a little off and the gestures were not attentive nor friendly. The food was overall tasty and what I expected. The biggest disappointment came with the latte I ordered for the dessert. I didn't bother complaining, but what was brought to me was just a cup of lukewarm milk coffee that looked messy. Don't bother ordering any espresso drinks here. Lastly, I asked for a bag for my leftovers because we actually had two boxes to carry out. Our server brought a large brown bag without a handle. I took a look at it and it was a paper bag from the grocery store, Giant. Granted that they ran out of their regular carry out bags for the night, but it would have been nice for the server to add a simple explanation as why I was given a grocery paper bag at a steakhouse where I just spent over $300+. I went here for lunch and loved their menu assortment! I had a bbq salmon salad, and the toppings that went into the salad were fantastic. I would have never guessed BBQ and salmon to be a good combo, but it was yummy. My colleague recommended that I come back for dinner and try their chicken pasta. He says it's phenomenal. On the menu, they also offer combos, so you can do half a sandwich with your choices of soup or salad. We had the apple cobbler, which was just heavenly. Desserts there are meant to be shared please! Ordering the porterhouse, it was very undercooked. The meat didn't seem like a prime steak, more like choice. It was chewy and difficult to eat. My knife was too dull or it was just too tough as cutting it proved difficult. For a steakhouse, they missed on the quality of the meat and the preparation. Crabcakes...I've never been served crabcakes that were all around white. They are supposed to have some color on top at the very least from the pan, or broiler. It was a good run, but things are just not as awesome here as the used to be. It's little things like chilled salad forks that have disappeared, and the portions have lost some weight. These days every "date night" costs double because we have to pay a babysitter too, so it is tough when we finally get there and the experience is riddled with little things that just didn't used to happen here. We'll still be back, just less often. read more

Had such a wonderful time at J. Gilberts for dinner. Happened to be my birthday and the waiter was kind enough to bring out a delicious dessert for us, complimentary. We had the crab cakes, which were amazing, and the 10 oz top sirloin steak, which was seasoned and cooked perfectly. We were there on a Monday night which was awesome, because apparently on Mondays in addition to their great nightly happy hour specials, they do half price 50% off all bottles of wine. I have been here several other times for happy hour and their specials in the bar area are great. If i lived closer or worked nearby, I would come here often for their great food and drink happy hour specials. The ambiance of this restaurant is very intimate with all the candle light and the fireplace. perfect for after work drinks or a nice date night/dinner out, without having to head all the way into DC. Our waiter was so on point that he deserves his own shout out and review. Ryan, our server for the night, could not have been more professional, friendly, knowledgeable, courteous, funny etc. We had the best birthday dinner, and I'd say he was 50% of the reason. Service was excellent. Overall--excellent food, ambiance, service, and extra attention to detail from our waiter Ryan made it a wonderful night and we will definitely be back. read more

The food and drinks were delicious! I had the seafood mixed grill with salmon, shrimp, scallop, crab cake, asparagus and mashed potatoes. EVERY bite was tasty will nothing left on my plate. My daughter had the glazed salmon, potatoes, green beans and lobster mac - all devine! Finished dinner with crème brûlée... highly recommend J. Gilbert's. J. Gilbert's is a place I go for special occasions. Their Maryland crab bisque is out of this world. I could make an entire meal out of that soup. I wonder if they would look at me funny if I ordered 3 bowls of bisque for appetizer, entree and dessert. The steaks there are very good as well. I have always had mine come out perfectly. the sides could sometimes use some work, but overall it is a very solid restaurant. I have never had the dessert. I am always too stuffed from the soup and entree. read more
