Excellent food, service and atmosphere! You can't beat the selection of food for Sunday Brunch . . . I'm a sucker for the peel and eat shrimp! I have never had anything less than an exceptional experience when I dine here. Valet Parking is complimentary and the restaurant is always bustling starting at 5pm on any given night. Great place to take friends & family as well as for a business lunch/dinner or drinks. read more

LOVED this place! It is a huge restaurant but keeps a very cozy, intimate atmosphere. I had a booth next to one of the many fireplaces :) and the food was delicious. I had the loaded baked potato soup, steak and sweet potato frites, and banana creme brulee. It was all delicious! And i cant forget about the bread that comes prior to the meal, it rocked as well. Really great place to enjoy great food with great friends! Definitely not a cheap restaurant but totally worth the money for such good quality food and great service! read more

The best food for an incredible price in Northern Virginia. J Gilbert's is a must-do/must-eat when it comes to anything and everything steak related. The customer service is great, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the food is absolutely delicious. Great menu, great chefs. What more can you ask for? The prices are fantastic compared to those of other, worse steak restaurants in the area--even the ones with a larger reputation! In the end, I always suggest J Gilbert's when family is in town and even just when it's a Friday night and we want something GREAT to eat. I'm a loyal J Gilbert's customer because J Gilbert's is truly a gem. read more

Yes, it is pricey. Yes, the food is tasty. Yes, the service is fantastic. And yes, we enjoyed our dinner. P.S. The pork chops were wonderful. Not sure how often we can afford to shell out $100 for a dinner but it was good value IMO. read more

I had the cheeseburger and ordered scalloped potatoes in place of the sweet potato fries that came with it. The scalloped potatoes were good, but the cheeseburger was bland and lacked flavor and seasoning I thought. I ordered the mesquite 1/2 chicken to go and opted for the creamed corn which was delicious, but the chicken kind of had a odd taste, and I have had mesquite before, but didn't really taste that good. The potatoes were not that good either. Once thing I can say, this restaurant does have one of the best Sunday brunches in the area(which I tried several months back) and I will definitely return for that. It is worth the price. As far as the menu goes, I will probably pass. I might try one of the steaks, will see. read more

Had lunch with 3 former colleagues today. As usual, this place is busy. The service is good. I had steak+ frites, flat iron steak, brown butter sauce, fries, romesco sauce and salad. The steak was cooked as ordered, it was a little chewy though, I did not care for the brown butter sauce since it was too sweet for me. I did not finish all the fries, wished they cut the fries bigger than these skinny fries. I think it would taste better with bigger size fries :-). The portion of the salad was big and fresh. I enjoyed the lunch. read more

Service, ambiance and food were all A1! My crab cakes although small, packed huge flavor. The scallops were succulent and the lobster mac n cheese was delish. Perfect for a date night. read more

I came here for the Sunday brunch, and was not blown away by it. The selection was really nice. But the delivery on the section was mediocre. I had a little taste of everything. They had some freshly seared Tuna, but it was sitting out there for a while, so it didn't feel so fresh. A whole lot of shrimp and cocktail sauce. The Lobster Mac n Cheese didn't have any lobster or lobster flavoring in it, and it barely tasted cheesy either. I was very excited about the chocolate fondue fountain, but the fondue didn't taste very rich, but rather liquidy. So, i probably wouldn't go here again, personally. But, I wouldn't say that it's a bad option for a buffet brunch. read more

I absolutely love this place! Brunch here is affordable and all you can eat! One of my favorite places to go to brunch. A wide array of option from omelette station, lobster mac and cheese, fish (and smoked too), fresh fruit, prime rib and delicious oysters from Maine. I love it. There is even a dessert station which I can never really get too because I am always so full from the other options. The staff here are very nice, friendly and attentive. My host Adam was great, Sepi my waitress was very attentive to my needs and always had a smile on her face. The manager even stopped by and said hello. Great team here! I even enjoyed the jazzy music playing in the background. I can't wait to come again with all my friends and family! read more

Update from Memorial Day dinner 2018. The steaks, entire meal and the service was excellent. The manager stopped our table to ensure that we were happily eating. Special thank you to our stellar server Meghan who was so accommodating. 5 stars. -- original -- My wife and I arrived for 7:15 reservation on a Friday and were immediately seated. Jazz standards and other overhead - a plus for me. Corner table is dark we were informed. Staff added 4 candles to table. Other tables besides us used cell phone as flashlight to see menu. Tortilla soup came for wife. It was mostly tortillas strips that in her opinion got in the way of the actual soup. Sent back for salad instead as all the tortillas topped with guacamole became very soggy. During this time my salad didn't appear and I went to ask maitre d' about it after 10 minutes post wife's soup. Constantly our orders were reversed for some reason, as in I needed to tell kitchen server whose plate is whose. While waiting for salad and wife's replacement salad the steaks arrived but we had to decline as salad was still coming. Maitre d' told us the manager would come over. Manager was genuinely accommodating. Manager agreed we should definitely have freshly fired steaks after our salads. Manager told us not to worry and that he could try to sell our steaks to another table. He was serious and not joking. Same glass used for soda refill came back multiple times with my already used limes. Normally I would have said something but I wanted to see. 10 minutes post salad my salad plate was taken, wife's plate is still at table, and we are waiting for entree. Manager checked in at around 10-15 minute post salad to take my wife's salad plate and to say entrees are "delayed" but they are making our order. Entrees arrived. Food is very good, which is why we are here. We are also here because past service was good. Out of Apple Croustade dessert. Carrot cake is good. Pecan instead of walnut, which is a plus for me. Missed Apple Croustade though. Tonight overall experience for me was 1-star until manager was involved so 3 star for effort. Because of manager involvement and compensations and the very good food - we still like JG. When we come here again and the food is just as good but the service is way better I will be happy to increase stars to max. read more

This is a nice steakhouse. I did have to send my meat back because they over cooked my "as rare as the kitchen can legally serve" steak. They apologized and returned with the cool-centered steak the way I like, with an extra order of their delicious thin cut fries. It happens. The prosciutto and mustard brussels sprouts were also particularly good, but I'll order almost anything with prosciutto in it. The bottom line is that this is a solid steakhouse with great service. You shouldn't leave disappointed. read more

This is our second time here. First time was very good and second time very good. The second time, my girlfriend ordered her steak medium rare but it came out almost well done. The waiter and manager were nice enough to bring out another steak medium rare and also bring extra sides due to the delay. I think their filet is better than some of the steaks houses in DC I regularly go to and we will definitely be coming back. read more

Went here for brunch and had a great time. A bit pricey and no regular lunch menu but well worth it. At first glance it doesn't seem like there is a ton of choices but everything is of the highest quality and more than you need. I took the advice of another reviewer and went at 11 when items were fresh and didn't see any decline in quality or temp by 12:30sh. The omelette bar was hand made and the waffles were delicious and brought to the table fresh. I wish they had a fruit compote or whipped cream but they did have nice jellies and syrup. Home fries and the shrimp And other choices all quite good. Chocolate fountain was a nice touch and tasted way better than the Golden Corral type for children. I do wish the pastries and muffins were better, they kinda tasted like a continental breakfast or frozen. Overall while not as gigantic or fancy (caviar, etc.) as a ritz brunch, more than you need and all of high quality. Great atmosphere and service as well, with the waiters always taking your plate right away and refilling your coffee. read more

Went here for lunch yesterday with coworkers during restaurant week. Place was slammed but we had reservations so we got seated quickly. There were 8 of us, so we had 2 waiters and they still were kind of slow getting drinks and orders. Super nice guys though. I'm guessing part of this was due to how slammed they were. Restaurant week menu was salad, entree and dessert for $21. - I got a ceaser salad which was fantastic and a huge portion. - Entree got the lobster mac and cheese because I've never tried it before and wanted to try it. It was okay, nothing amazing. - Cheesecake was very good. They added fresh blueberries on top. All in all, a solid lunch but don't think I'd come back here and pay full price. Definitely not a bad place though. The atmosphere is the best part. read more

Restaurant week with a group of friends: Food: The steak was perfectly cooked. Crab bisque was definitely on the saltier side. Everything was okay but nothing too memorable. Typical steak house. Service: Some sides were mixed up but the management were quick to take notice and fix the problem. It was restaurant week so I wasn't expecting A++ service. Cost: Restaurant week menu Overall, a good steak house.. read more

I usually don't go leave the district for food, but a large group of us went out before some local theater and this place had a recommended brunch. Brunch is buffet style, with a meat carving station and a dessert table with chocolate fountain. I didn't think they had anything unusual compared to any other brunch buffet place, but the quality and quantity was very good. They constantly replenished the items that were running out, and nothing looked crusty like it had sat too long. Even the shrimp and smoked fish area never looked picked through. Attentive servers, especially for a buffet style meal, and very clean and inviting interior. If it wasn't so far I'd do it again for an afternoon brunch! read more

I'm going to complain again. There's something great about this place, but on Sunday, it's not there. Almost a year ago, I took my girlfriend to J. Gilbert's for a nice romantic birthday dinner. The staff was fantastic as they had the flowers I had sent there already on the table, they were friendly, and very helpful. The food was excellent. The atmosphere was as expected at a steak house: dark, woody, with the murmur of people talking quietly at their tables. However, it wasn't the old boys club at a place like Shula's or Ruth's Chris. Much more intimate and date-like. WIth a fond memory behind us, we decided to have a Valentine lunch there. Wanting to avoid the buffet, I made a reservation for 1pm through Open Table. For the birthday dinner, we had about a minute wait. I assume that was to get the flowers out. This time, we ended up waiting about 20 minutes. What was the point of the reservation? We got to our seats, but they forgot to bring the menus. As it turns out, on Sundays you can't order from the menu until 5. Before then, it's buffet only. I had already taken a quick glance at the buffet and decided I didn't want it as the stuff on the menu is quite good. With no chance, I took a second look. I ended up with a really good omelette. The shrimp with some sort of cajun spice was overcooked. The chicken was so dry, the sauce they had on it was not enough to overcome it. The green beans were okay, but I had to let the butter drain off them so I could taste the bean itself. Just about everything else was drenched in cheese. I'm not able to eat cheese, and even just the smell turns my stomach. They even had more cheese out in case the cheese in everything else wasn't enough to overpower the blandness which surely was hidden within. On to the service. Last time it was just the right amount. This time, pretty bad. The waiter was late getting to the table after we sat. Then, after we ordered our drinks, he was slow to refill and generally inattentive. I'm not sure what he actually did to earn a tip other than show up for work that day. Yes, I know it's a hard job, but there's no excuse for not doing it when you're there. Just because it's a buffet doesn't excuse you from being a good server/waiter. I've had other buffet servers who were stellar. This guy was absolutely phoning it in. My opinion on J. Gilbert's is to make sure you're not there for brunch, but for a romantic dinner for two it's a great place. read more

I've been to this place a few times. The food has gotten worse over time..salt, salt, salt. If food does not taste good, then fill It with salt. Friend sent her lobster back twice and finally gave up on eating altogether. Her lobster Tasted like salt. Went there on a Friday evening. Even though we were the first ones there and the dining room was empty, the hostess did not want to seat us. She was blond and youngish. She was horrible and rude. She talked on the phone, helped seat others coming in, but not us. I asked to see the manager but no one knew where she was it was over 40 minutes before a manager showed up and we got seated. That blond was not going to seat us. I had a scarf on my head and the people I was with thought she treated us horrible because of my scarf. That tells you some thing right there. The manager tried to calm things by giving us some greasy calamari and a few shrimp as an appetizer. We should have just left. Food was dismal and no taste. Clearly this place does not like people of different ethnic groups. Horrible p!ace. I'll never return. read more

Roaches on the bar. I've visited this place on and off for many years and although service is great, I won't be back. A few days ago, my spouse and I were at the bar, had just gotten our plates when a large roach ran across past our plates and over towards our take out bag. We alerted the bartender who quickly killed it with a cloth napkin and got the manager. The manager took money off the bill, but honestly as our appetites were ruined - despite already having had a drink and an appetizer should have gotten our bill torn up. The tiles at the foot of the stools were loose, and perhaps the critters hiding place. Nonetheless, this place has seen better days, and certainly more sanitary ones. I was torn about posting, but that's what these review sites are for - and I've certainly been forewarned by other patrons of unsanitary restaurant conditions and have thanked them. read more

Pedestrian, incredibly disappointing steakhouse. Great service, great wine (although not a lot of affordable choices). The salads were good and the seafood was decent, but the steak was so surprisingly flavorless and poorly cooked... and that's why you go to a steakhouse right. PASS! read more

Bottom line: it's okay, but I've grilled better steaks in my own backyard -- for a fraction of the cost. Went this evening for dinner with friends. Three of us had steak, one had just a salad. The ambience is very nice, the service is brisk and efficient (but not unfriendly -- just good), but the food and its presentation are just so-so, particularly at these prices. Not that anything was particularly wrong, but nothing was terrifically right, either. I had the filet combo with seared scallops -- the scallops were delicious, but portion sizes were, um, modest at best, and the filet was properly tender but not very flavorful. The Kansas City strip steak was good but barely seasoned, and the bone-in ribeye was thoroughly unremarkable. I had very good memories of J. Gilbert's from a couple of previous visits, but I feel like they let me down a little bit this evening -- prices are higher, quality is lower, and flavor was curiously absent, as compared to what I remembered. Again, there was nothing particularly wrong with the experience, but there was nothing thrillingly right, either. read more

Yay! A great steak house and it's close to home!! Was craving crab cakes and this place was recommended by the bf's cousin...but the broiled crab cakes weren't the only great surprise on the menu. We did the prix-fixe...$33...3 course deal. BF-maryland crab bisque...umm velvety goodness w/ large chunks of sweet backfin crab meat! braised short ribs...undecided...fork tender, moist, boneless...but not the best i've had. marble cheesecake...it was ok, but the entire piece was gone :) ME-cesar salad...eh...typical but came with a yummy parm cheese crisp. 10 oz top sirloin...medium rare cooked to perfection, cool center surrounded by pinkness, tender & every single bite was juicy! vanilla bean creme brulee...deliciousness, several specks of vanilla bean, creamy but not heavy. didn't finish the sirloin, so had it for lunch the following day...STILL JUICY & TENDER after 2 minutes in the microwave...IMPRESSIVE we can't wait to come back so we can order the cowboy ribeye! read more

Ok, so normally J. Gilbert's is 5 stars. The steaks, the brunch, the wine... I could go on and on. Unfortunately we went there for restaurant week and it was not up to par. The service, wine, and dessert were still top notch, but the restaurant week Steak Frites was lousy. This review would have been 4 stars if the bad entree would have been anything but steak... but it's a steakhouse. For the management, I'd recommend charging more for a better cut of meat or substituting a small filet, hanger steak, or sirloin. I'll definitely go back and wouldn't hesitate to recommend the place, but I'll avoid the restaurant week menu in the future. read more

We went for dinner. My scallops were over cooked. The risotto was bland. The steak was delicious and perfectly cooked. The wine was great. At these prices however, everything should of been great. Our waiter should of just taken the day off. He had an attitude, he wasn't *rude*, but he was clearly uninterested in serving us. Another problem was, were still in the middle of our entrees when our server and another employee came to the table next to us and another table behind us to polish their silverware. That would be fine, but they managed to be amazingly loud. Dropping and clanking the silverware, and then they were carrying on a conversation by yelling over us. The interesting thing was: it wasn't late or anywhere near closing time. There were four other tables dining around us and these employees were just yelling over everyone. It was all rather unpleasant. Next time, I'm going to the Palm. I prefer a local establishment over a chain restaurant, but at these prices a minimum standard of service needs to be met. However, the host was sunshine personified. He was warm, welcoming and was very accommodating. read more

Wow, we were so lucky to have stumbled upon this on the last day of the extended restaurant week! This place was absolutely divine. We both ordered the Caesar salad, sirloin steak, mash potatoes, and Brussels sprouts. The sirloin was cooked to perfection - juicy and mouth watering exactly as I asked for! Not to mention the perfectly seasoned mash potatoes and Brussels sprouts, an absolute perfect pair with the sirloin. Ended the evening with tea and the chocolate cake and cheese cake - if you like the velvety notes of berries then the chocolate cake with a berry ganache topping is for you! Otherwise we loved the cheese cake, not overly sweet or rich. This place serves high quality meals for your tastebuds, I highly recommend this restaurant! read more

Wood-fired Steaks? never got to experience because of deplorable service and overwhelming smoke. I guess with the new smoking law in DC, my tolerance for smoke-filled dinning has diminished. But after standing in the lobby for 20 minutes - on a Wednesday night, with a reservation, I had enough and left. The hostess were rude and I had a feeling it wouldn't get better from there. read more

Tasteless steak. Had their 18oz ribeye. Wife had their filet and found it tough and tastless. Dessert was sitting for several minutes before serving. Daughter's ice cream was melted and the chocolate souffle arrived luke warm. Poured the wrong drink into my martini glass and instead of giving me a new glass, the waiter reused it! We were in a hurry so I didn't say anything. read more

So this great spot on the mean streets of McLean is a family favorite, but has yet to receive a Yelp review. A new menu is now being featured, so no better time than the present. It was busy, but not packed on a sunny Thursday night. We were immediately seated, and our drink order came quite quickly. The bartenders are generous with their pour, which is always welcome. A complimentary bread service arrives within minutes of being seated. A fresh from the oven rustic white hearth round with a sweetened butter is always a great start to the meal. One of the new menu items is their fondue, which comes in two varieties: A traditional Gruyere or a Maytag Bleu. We went with the Bleu option, and were rather pleased with our choice. The fondue is accompanied with thick cut steak fries, apples, and pretzel bread as dippers. The pretzel bread was disappointing, but we still had some of the rustic white, which we used instead. The waiter was stumped, when we asked him what was in the fondue, but soon gave us an answer of "Maytag Bleu cheese and white wine"... I guess the mystery will continue... Our entrees were old favorites. The lady in red ordered a 12 oz. Kansas City Strip, which was excellent and perfectly cooked. All of the steaks served at JG are USDA Prime Certified Angus, and the quality speaks for itself. I went with the Mixed Grill, which is a combination of fillet (4 oz. ), a blackened Chicken breast, and a skewer of BBQ Shrimp. All are bursting with flavor, and compliment each other well. The plate is shared with some dried plantain chips, their cheddar chipotle mashed, and a heaping of roasted veggies. Would highly recommend for first time visitors, to gain an appreciation of their variety. The best thing about JG doesn't come until the end of meal. I am on record as saying their Vanilla Bean Cream Brulee is the best dessert I have ever had. The hard caramel melts in your mouth with their vanilla bean custard base. Before you know it, it's gone, and you're left asking yourself if seconds actually makes sense. Their revised menu includes a 3-course Prix fixe menu (which includes the VBCB), for a very affordable $33. If you have not made it to this Northern Virginia spot, we strongly encourage you to stop in. You won't be disappointed! read more

This place is hit-or-miss. The food is usually good, but the service is often sub-par. The other night, both were inexcusably poor. We had reservations at 7:30 on a recent Saturday night. Didn't get seated until 8:15. No apology, just "yeah we're busy tonight." The waiter then took forever to take our orders, which were screwed up. My wife's "medium" steak was crazy well-done (think hockey puck), which of course slowed things down even more. The salmon that our friends ordered was overdone and they didn't even eat half of it. There were odd things about it too that were unpleasant. The water was cloudy (this wasn't condensation on the glass), so we got that replaced. Why was it cloudy?? The server would disappear for long stretches, and twice we had to get up to find him. Maybe he was busy, but he wasn't a particularly pleasant person either. This completely ruined what was supposed to be a nice night out for us, and was embarrassing since we'd recommended it to our friends and I could tell they hated it. Not sure we'll go back any time soon. It's expensive enough that the experience should be consistently better than this. read more

I am a huge fan of J. Gilberts -- have eaten in their Kansas City location as well. Yes, they are a chain, but a very small one (less than five in the US). I think they have a very good steak at a very fair price -- great to get a tasty piece of meat, crabcake, etc. Simple menu, but very classic with enough selection to keep most happy. They also have a full bar, a page full of signature cocktails, and a nice wine selection. One of the times I've eaten here it was with a large group in one of the private rooms. Service was bad, our server didn't come around often enough to check on us. Other than that they've had very gracious service. read more

This place was SO nice. The food was great - I hate artic char with sweet potatoes and I think Kale underneath. The creme brulee was good, but not amazing. I really like their drink selection and the fact that they listed it on an old whiskey bottle - awesome touch. The drinks are pricey at $12-13, but that is expected. The biscuits they give you before dinner are AMAZING - oh my gosh. They also come with maple syrup butter - mmmmmmmmmm. I will totally be back here. They are a little expensive, so be prepared. read more
