A must place to go for brunch! It was all you can eat from waffles, omelets to seafood. Everything was so delicious and our server was very attentive. Definitely going back to take our family. read more

We have been going to J Gilbert's for years and always enjoy a great steak and wine. Don't forget dessert!

Firth of all, we had a reservation to celebrate my birthday last Friday night at 7pm. we were seated fairly quickly and provided water. after that, we have not heard a peep for over 30 min and had no waiter come up to us until we flagged down a manager and 15 min later a reluctant young man finally took our drink orders. at this point we already waited for about an hour. the drinks and an appetizer came 25-30 minutes later and not at the same time. we tried to order our main dish but the waiter already disappeared. we kept trying to flag him down for a very long time with no much. no one ever checked on us at all. finally we flagged down the manager again and she promised to send someone else. eventually another waiter came and took out orders. at this time it was close to two hours. in 25 min the food arrived. only once during the whole time did a waiter check on us. they still forgot to bring steak sauce and a couple other things we asked for right alway. the food was quite food but this quality of service, or basically a lack thereof, made me really regret that I chose J Gilbers to celebrate my birthday and did not feel special at all. J Gilbert's, you can do better.... read more

Consistently great food. Steaks are to.die.for. Dry aged and oh so good. Last time we went we went for Sunday brunch. I only have two words: Prime..Rib. Get it. You will not regret it. The brunch has more food than you can possibly eat. So, pace yourself. The staff have always been extremely friendly, helpful, and attentive. Even when slammed, they make sure you are taken care of. read more

This place is awesome. The service is excellent. From the moment I entered, I was greeted with a smile and was given a choice of seating. The waiter was great. But the food was amazing. Surprised I haven't been here ever. I will be bringing my clients here going forward. The bacon burger is 100% awesome. Loveeeeeed it!!! read more

We went out to celebrate at J. Gilbert's, and left with a bad taste in our mouth. We ordered the calamari for an app, it was great. He got the top sirloin with mushroom risotto and brussel sprouts. It was great, just wanted a little more prosciutto. I ordered the Filet combo with the crab cake, Lobster mac & cheese, and creamed corn. The food was phenomenal. The crab cake was perfect, full of crab and tasty. The creamed corn was perfect as well. No complaints from me, but I could only finish about 1/3 of my meal. So, I decided to have it boxed to go. The server asked if she could box it, and I let her.... BIG MISTAKE. The bread I had saved on the plate was tossed out, and all of the food was slid into one big box. It was a mess. The cream from the corn was all over the rest of the food, making it one big container of mess. It was really disappointing, as I was excited to eat the majority of my entree later! I thought it was common sense to separate things that are essentially soupy and have liquids, but apparently I was wrong. TLDR: Food was great, box your own leftovers read more

J. Gilbert's Wood-Fired Steaks & Seafood - Not exactly an appetizing view.. - Steakhouses Near Me - McLean, Virginia

This was our first meal out since the beginning of the COVID lockdown. We chose Father's Day because this restaurant is my husband's favorite. He was not disappointed! Everything was just as delicious as always and the staff seemed happy to be back. They are doing a great job of social distancing and request that you complete your meal in 90 minutes, which is plenty of time. My only complaint is that 60 minutes in, as I was literally taking my final few bites, a young man was at the table asking to begin clearing dishes. And the second I placed the last bite in my mouth he took my dinner plate, then took the fork from my hand. Maybe a little too much exuberance on his part. Otherwise, it was great. read more

The boyfriend and I had our NYE dinner here. I really enjoyed the ambiance and the food was amazing! For our appetizers we ordered 1/2 a dozen oysters and the crab cakes. Loved the crab cakes, lots of crab meat and great flavor, the oysters I can't say much about, they were just left at the table, no details about them or anything provided. I'm not a big fan of red meat, but I ordered the lobster and filet special with mashed potatoes and asparagus for my entree. I have to say, this is the first time that I've finished a filet, it was that delicious. My boyfriend had the filet with scallops, lobster mac and cheese and carrots which I believe were supposed to be prepared in crystallized mint? Can't remember exactly, but they were intriguing and upon our servers suggestion he opted for them. However, as amazing as the lobster and mac and cheese was, the carrots were extremely lacking in flavor and presentation. Service was pretty average, our server would disappear at times. She began the night by forgetting to bring us bread, no big deal. We ordered a bottle of white wine, after pouring the first glass she never made any effort to check up on us or refill our glasses as necessary, which would have been an easy way to get us to order a second bottle once it finished. Instead, it was a clear example that she was not attentive. Also, our appetizer plates were sitting at our table well after we were done which made for a messy and crowded experience once the entrees arrived. It was also difficult to get her attention, let alone find her, when we wanted to order a glass of wine for our entree. A lot of reviews have criticized the service, and although not terrible, it isn't anything memorable. Love the food though and would return, but with lower expectations for service. read more

It is a nice place, no complaints on the food, my fillet mignon was excellent, I like the calamari and the onion rings, excellent crème brûlée, so why the four stars ? The reason for four stars is the cleanness of the bathroom, I was completely surprised when I wanted to use it, its a beautiful restaurant but need more attention to the bathroom! read more

Decided to give it a try after seeing the open table rating and looking at the menu. Lucked into restaurant week specials. Excellent food and service. Each dish was as good or better than the next. The potato chips with blue cheese dip was amazing. Loved the sauces that accompanied the onion rings. The crab bisque and potato soup were wonderful and different than most. The wood fired steaks had so much flavor and were cooked to perfection. The crab cakes were tasty without any significant filler and broiled perfectly. So glad we took a chance for our celebratory dinner. Plus we had a great bottle of wine. Will definitely return. read more

My family went to J.Gilberts for Father's Day brunch and we were thrilled to get a reservation just days before for a large party of 10. There was a great variety of food - some great, a lot that was good and some other stuff was so-so (like the pastries and desserts). There were also fresh raw oysters and prime rib that were amazing especially for an all-you-can-eat. Our table has a number of servers that managed the area our table was in so we were never without help when needed. They were friendly and willing to do what it takes to keep their patrons pleased. My dad has a request for cooked oysters since he has restrictions on eating raw food and the server we asked didn't hesitate to say no. Without question, he said "yes, I can do fried oysters" and went on to explain that they would shrink in size from a raw oyster. I'm not sure if the pricing was specific to the father's day brunch or if that's the price ever week so I can't speak for that. I would highly recommend checking out their brunch. Ive never been here to order from their regular menu, but have heard from friends that their steaks are amazing. read more

J. Gilbert's is a local gem. I have been here multiple times and can say I'm a fan. The filet and sea scallops combo is my go-to and I usually opt for the pre-fixe option which includes a salad or soup to start and desert to finish. The wedge salad is decent but it isn't anything to write home about. The Caesars salad is good, but my favorite option is the Md crab bisque soup. I always get my filet cooked medium rare. (I think this place is known for their ribeye and strip but I am a filet fan) The flourless chocolate cake for desert is money. If you're getting desert, get this cake. I did try the burger for dinner once but it isn't worth the $19... At all. The waiter claimed it was Kobe beef (from what I've read there's no such thing as Kobe beef in America, rather it's just some sort of gimmick to charge more). Definitely pass on this burger. Keep in mind this place is not on capital grille's level but it is definitely a good place. read more

Walking through Tyson's Galleria, I had passed this restaurant by many times. We decided to try it for a friend's birthday lunch. I had read the reviews and decided to try the chopped salad. It had grilled chicken, mixed greens, crunchy pita crackers, bacon, tomatoes, and I ordered ranch dressing. It was huge and I ended up taking half of it home with me. I was glad that I made the choice to order that menu item. It was fresh and full of chicken and fresh veggies. My friend got the hamburger and fries. It was cooked perfectly and had a freshly grilled succulent taste. The French fries were crispy and hot. The meal was served with complimentary cornbread. The cornbread was okay, but nothing to rave about. I did really appreciate the complimentary chocolate cake and ice cream we received for my friends birthday. I also ordered the cappuccino. It was light and tasty. Our server, Louis was great and made sure we were well taken care of. Lunch is costly, but quite good. A good place to rest and eat in between shopping for Coach and Prada handbags. : ) read more

This was my first experience here. I have to say.....pretty much disappointed. I read so many good reviews here from Yelp, so I was very excited to come here. But as soon as I opened the door, hmmmmm...... It is unimpressive. It is OK. Not bad. But JUST OK. We could sit down immediately since we made a reservation in advance. I always check bathroom for any restaurant, which usually shows their basic idea for cleanliness. It was bad. No soap, tissue everywhere, empty toilet rolls here and there. It was messy. I got back to the table. Food on carpet here and there. It does not look like good reputation restaurant at all. I guess I should not expect cleanliness at this restaurant. I have to expect service and food. Server was very friendly woman. But probably a little bit challenging English country woman. She could not understand our question so well. So we just guessed by ourselves. Other than English problem, she was quick and attentive, nice service. Food. I do not know where to start. Too many to write. I skip all the small problems, and get to the worst one. Raw oyster. We ordered 12 pieces plate. 3 to 4 of them were amazingly small. Like left over of somebody ate it. Or was it? Only a tiny bit was left on a shell. We had to ask our server to check it. Fortunately she agreed to exchange new ones. Overall, it does not match the value. Very expensive price and ok food, messy floor and bathroom. I always dreamed to come here, but I should have kept dreaming, instead of coming. I was so, so, so disappointed. read more

Review #1 I've eaten here twice, once a few yrs ago, and the second being more recent on 11 Sep 2012. I still find their fillets incredible as they melt in your mouth like butter, so I didn't have anything to bring home. The asparagus was perfectly crunchy with just enough snap to let you know they weren't overcooked or soggy, while still retaining their juices. The smashed potatoes were wonderfully whipped and seasoned, but just a bit dry, just a bit, and not that much to complain about. I could have added some butter to them to add more vibrance & bring them back to life. My Crème Brûlée topped the meal off with a light, airy sweet taste that didn't feel me up. The atmosphere is serene & calm and a little dark so you can unwind after a long stressful day. The staff was courteous. read more

I would have told you that J. Gilbert's is not my kind of place. It is a classic, upscale steakhouse, and this is a specific category of restaurants I tend not to enjoy nearly as much as the size of the bill at the end of the night says I should have. And while I have had their Sunday brunch buffet a couple of times for dinner and enjoyed it, I was kind of pessimistic when my family decided to go here for dinner on Christmas Eve. Obviously, judging from the number of stars I awarded, I was wrong. All five of us really enjoyed our meals. The steaks, lamb, and scallops were all cooked perfectly and delicious and the sides (especially the mushroom and lobster risottos) were excellent. And I would be remiss to not mention the service, which was absolutely top notch. Hugo, our waiter, was attentive without being oppressive, very personable, and diligent about guiding my mother-in-law with Celiac disease though choosing her meal. read more

Oh J. Gilbert's. You had an opportunity to make my date night a special one. It could've been a great evening: an excellent meal of delicious food and top notch service in a nice intimate and romantic setting. You had the opportunity.....and you failed. Why did I choose you? Why did I choose you over my safer bets (Esposito's in Fairfax and Coastal Flats to name a couple)? Because, two years ago I dined at your establishment multiple times for lunch and had stellar food and service. Ever since, I had raved about you to my girlfriend but never managed to come back until today. Was I wrong to build you up so much, J. Gilbert's? Apparently I was. I should've known something was up when there wasn't a wait for a table (even though the place was, admittedly, pretty full). My girlfriend and I were sat near the back of the restaurant at a table right next to one of the party rooms. This particular party room was occupied by a group of people that probably filled half of the said room. Unfortunately, for about 90% of the time I was there, six or seven people were standing OUTSIDE the entry to the party room, wine in hand (and, as I could tell, a few more already in their stomach) carrying on loudly about who-knows-what. Not quite the nice romantic meal I was hoping for. Is it too hard for one of the servers to ask them to move out of the main dining area and into their room? Apparently it is. It took our waiter five minutes before he came by to ask what we wanted to drink. My girlfriend and I are big users of the social media app Foursquare and we saw, when we had checked in to J. Gilbert's, that we got a free "Maytag Potato Chips" appetizer. We showed the waiter the free appetizer coupon on our smart phone and he immediately understood and took down that order as well as my girlfriend's order of a 6oz Center Cut Filet (with a loaded baked potato and spinach) and my order of the Seared George's Bank Sea Scallops. I also had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. As we waited for our appetizer to arrive we had the pleasure of listening to the family next to us complain amongst themselves about the food and service. My girlfriend and I looked at each other, hoping that our experience would prove to be better. I obviously need to learn how to read subtle signs better. When our potato chips arrived, they were decent. The dish was a mass of homemade potato chips covered in a blue cheese sauce. It was more of an appetizer for four people, not two, but it was free so I let it slide. Our entrees, on the other hand, were not free. Each of them, before tax cost $28. That's no small amount of money. I expect amazing food cooked to perfection for that price. What we received, instead, was mediocre at best. The food arrived and it was presented well. My scallops surrounded a serving of lobster risotto. My server warned me to be careful because the plate was extremely hot and, to my surprise, it was! I had high hopes that my food would be just as hot. It wasn't. Everything was lukewarm. The scallops were seared okay, if a bit undercooked and the risotto was definitely undercooked. Every bite left me with crunchy grains of undercooked rice in my mouth. There's nothing like an undercooked risotto to ruin a meal. The pieces of lobster in it left a lot to be desired. My girlfriend's filet got equally "meh" reviews. The meat was cooked well enough but it just didn't have that "wow" factor that you'd expect from something that costs $28. The baked potato was under-seasoned (all the salt was on the outside skin of the potato and not on the inside) and she couldn't even eat the spinach because of its flavor. Believe me, it's hard to get my girlfriend to NOT like spinach. She loves the stuff. Once we had finished, our plates sat empty in front of us for over five minutes before anyone bothered to come remove them. From taking our order, to filling our water glasses to removing our plates, our waiter was not quick about any of it. After the dishes were cleared I asked for the check and it arrived. All $77.44 of it INCLUDING a $9.00 charge for our "FREE" appetizer. By this time we were fed up with the place and we just wanted to leave so I decided just to pay for it. There are plenty of meals in the DC area where I'll gladly pay $75+ and when I'm done eating I feel like I've had an amazing meal that I want to rave about to my friends. That was not the case with J. Gilbert's. Instead, I just felt ripped off. I left the waiter a 10% tip (I almost ALWAY leave at least 20%). As we walked out, the bored looking hostess at the hostess station didn't even bother to tell us "have a nice night!" That was sort of the cherry on the top of the whole blah experience. If only one or two of the problems we experienced had happened or if the meal had cost $30 less, I would've been a lot more forgiving. I expect a lot from a place that charges $25 - $40 per entree. I don't think I'm alone. Sorry J. but I've dined with you for the last time read more

On our first night in D.C., we headed straight from Dulles to J Gilbert's to meet the family for dinner, so I feel like my impression of the food may have been tempered by my starvation at the time. As I recall, nearly everything that hit our table was pretty phenomenal. I don't eat red meat, and steaks are apparently what they do best here (our waiter told us as much in his lame opening speech - more on said waiter coming up). But I was very excited to find a Caribbean Mixed Grill on the menu, and ordered it without much regard to the rest of the menu. We started with the sharing platter, which, while slightly pricey, offers a little something for everyone and works well as an appetizer for a larger group. The bleu cheese chips had my utmost attention, but only until I got a bite of the crab cakes. Holy god these were good. No filler, just tasty, tasty chunks of crab, herbs, spices, and possibly some egg to hold it all together. So you can imagine that when dinner arrived, I knew I was in trouble. Here came my Caribbean Mixed Grill, which was a boat-sized platter loaded with enough food to satisfy a small island. I offered the petit filet mignon to a family member, but that still left my with a blackened chicken breast, BBQ grilled shrimp, zingy mashed potatoes and fried plantains (my only disappointment here was the plantains, actually. Rather than being of the soft, sweet variety I've had at South American and Caribbean restaurants, these were more like anemic banana chips - more of a garnish than anything). The only downer the entire evening was our server. I've worked alongside some douche bag waiters in the past, but it completely blew my mind that this guy was on staff. I imagine he must be of some relation to the owners or management. Clearly this punk knew that with a group our size, his gratuity was in the bag. He had about as much personality as a potato, and looked seriously put out when we had questions for him. I realize we weren't exactly low maintenance, but we were also dropping a pretty penny that night, and he would have done well to have recognized that. The man responsible for the check that evening frequently leaves extra on top of the grat for great servers. He took no extra pains for this kid. This is strange indeed, because the rest of the staff appeared to be more jovial and helpful. I was personally shown to the restrooms when I couldn't find them, and another server ran after us when someone left a sweater behind. Our own server disappeared after the bill was paid. Still, we had a fantastic time, and were grateful for the semi-private room they sat us in. It was a fantastic meal, and a warm, comfortable environment in which to catch up with friends and family. Would I go back? Of course. Would I insist on being served by someone besides that pompous little twerp? Definitely. read more

You know, after reading the mixed reviews on here, I had to write one of my own. When my wife and I walked in for our date night, we were quickly seated (had a reservation through opentable.com) at a table for two near the front. While it would have normally been ok, there were way too many families and it was a bit noisy. When I approached the hostess, she quickly resat us in the back of the restaurant where it was quieter. Kat, our server, wasn't bad. She needs to be a tad more attentive to keeping the wine and water glasses full - but hey, I guess it can't be perfect. Otherwise, she quickly took our orders and then got us our food. We ordered the tomato and mozzarella salad along with a mixed green salad. The vinegarettes were quite tasty and light - you could easily taste the greens and their subtle flavors with each bite. Wifey had the crab cakes and I had the cowboy rib eye. The cheddar chipotle mashed potatoes that came as a part of the crab cake dish were a tad out of place - but the asparagus were appropriate for such a dish. The loaded baked potato was actually unremarkable - it was...well, a loaded baked potato. The bone-in rib eye was quite tasty despite it coming out medium when I asked for medium rare. The onion straws were also good - but I still prefer the saltier ones at Matchbox. We didn't have room for desert so I can comment on that one. Oh - the wine was pretty good and I noticed that the wine list wasn't too pricey - definitely a great plus for the place considering that this could easily sock your pocket. Overall, not bad. I'll definitely go there again! read more

I ate here for the Sunday brunch. If you've never been for brunch, understand that the buffet is the only thing they serve at this time, there are no menus available. The service was pretty bare. The waiter is guaranteed a big tip since the buffet is $25 a person, so either he didn't care or felt the buffet took care of his job. Worst part was watching a small cockroach walk along the ledge of the booth I was in. Had a server been around to notify, I could have alerted them of the creature. I'm not one to cause a scene or demand a free meal, but it was still bothersome. You never see just one roach by chance. I wasn't impressed, kind of grossed out, and won't return. read more

It is worth the drive from Maryland just to have their weekend brunch buffet and when you do go for dinner, the steaks are amazing.

I have no idea how J Gilbert's has so many 4 and 5 star reviews. My wife and I came in for dinner on a Saturday night and had a terrible dining experience. The service left a lot to be desired, and the food was flat out terrible. I don't want to dwell on it too much, but we waited over 10 minutes for a server to come by and take our drink order, and then another 5 for our wine to come out... Anyway, on to the food. My wife loves onions, so she ordered the onion ring appetizer. They essentially tasted like onion rings from Burger King. I ordered the Cowboy Ribeye, medium rare, for my dinner with none of the sides (for some reason it comes with pico de gallo on top of it).... Anyway, it comes out with all of the sides (even though I ordered a baked potato and lobster mac and cheese instead) and it had that stupid out of place pico on it. I cut into the steak and its Medium WELL. Getting the temperature so wrong on a ribeye at a steak house is completely unacceptable (almost unforgivable).... The half inch steak looked like something from Applebee's, and there is no chance that it was a prime cut of beef considering the poor taste and marbling. When the server brought out a "corrected" order, the steak was rare (instead of medium rare... I just accepted it instead of sending it back... again) and bland as could be. I had four bites and pushed it aside. The lobster mac and cheese was bland, and the baked potato was nothing special. My wife's filet and crab cake also lacked in taste, and her asparagus was overly salty. Once the server came back and my wife was "done" with her meal, I asked for the check, paid immediately, and ran to my car as fast as possible. There isn't one thing I enjoyed at J Gilberts, and with so many superior options for steak around here, there is no reason for me to go back. read more

The Sunday brunch is fantastic. There is an enormous table of food to choose from, including different types of eggs, meats, pastries, PASTAS, cooked fish, and even quiche. At the other end of the table you have the spiced shrimp, smoked salmon, and salad, as well as two mini tables with bread and cheese and fruit. Not to mention, the omelet station and roast beef station. It is hard to tear yourself away when you're getting your first plate because you just want to try everything, but believe me, it will be worth the wait when you come back! At the table, beverages such as OJ or coffee are included, I think only alcoholic beverages are extra. You can also order Belgian waffles from your server and they bring those to you freshly made and piping hot with smooth syrup and butter. Just when you think you're done eating, go back and find the chocolate fountain. Yes, the chocolate fountain. It rests on a table next to marshmallows, strawberries, and pineapples, with a cup of sticks for you to dip anything and everything in chocolate. There are also other desserts such as cookies, puddings, and other fancy things. You could probably dunk those under the fountain too. Overall, no complaints. Definitely worth $25 because you couldn't eat more than you would eat here, anywhere, for less than that, and the quality is just fantastic. Highly recommend it!! read more

Why is this place so always jammed?!?! I live very close by J Gilbert's, and I was always wondering how this place is always so packed. So, on our wedding anniversary, we decided to check it out. We made a reservation at 7, but got there around 6:30 - again their parking lot was packed (don't people work?) The restaurant is very spacious, but very dark. Once I got in there, I almost felt like I was traveling outside of VA. The atmosphere is very rustic ranch kind of atmosphere - and we liked it. The hosts were nice and took us to a booth table. We were sitting down looking at the menu, and we realized that water was dripping down to our water cups from the ceiling. We figured it was AC unit dropping water down. We asked for a seat change, and we got it. THEN, the staff knowing that the AC water dripping down, sat another couple down at the same table! I couldn't believe it. We ordered a lobster bisque for app. My husband ordered a filet, and I ordered salmon. Lobster bisque was very creamy, rich, and tasty - just way too salty. I tongue was going numb and had to put some water to dilute it. I mean it was good bisque, but not exactly five star. My salmon dish was actually pretty good with couscous, but his steak was sorta..average... So, here is my problem, this restaurant charges almost the same amount of $$$ for their dishes as Capital Grill or Morton's, but the service, quality of dish, culinary sense, and the atmosphere don't really match the price that they charge. It was our anniversary dinner, and I was really grateful that my husband planned this whole thing. And, I was so happy to celebrate our 2nd wedding anniversary. But, I have to say this isn't the best restaurant I had been to especially considering the price. Overall, over priced, mediocre food, and less than well maintained restaurant, I give three star. Because so many people said great things about their happy hour, I would like to give it another try for their happy hour. Stay tuned! Happy dining!! read more

I really wanted to like this place and up to a point I did. However, they made the same mistake twice on our carry out. The food was excellent. I had the flank steak, lobster Mac and cheese and asparagus. The Lobster Mac and cheese was delicious. After having a salad I could not finish my entree. I asked that it be packed up. It took the waiter a while to come back but he finally came and explained to us that another waiter threw out our food but they would prepare another one for us. We were happy that they remedied the situation. Although the waiter was nice the entire time he made the same mistake a second time. When we arrived home there was no Mac and cheese but instead someone else's creamed corn that had strings of French fries in it. They did give me another piece of steak but since I'm not really a beef person this will likely go to waste. Go for the food, but the service is careless. read more

Love the Sunday Brunch. We love going to eat and have drinks in this dark, and cool vibed restaurant. Get there early and really enjoy the modestly priced 25$ brunch. It is brunch and it is a buffet, but given where the restaurant is situated it is definitely more laid back than any other place within a few miles. It's not stuffy like the ritz and the wine list is definitely more palatable than other places. Get some wine maybe even a martini and enjoy the waffles. Cheers and happy eats! read more

Ahhhhh... a wonderful east coast steakhouse. Perfectly dim lighting, white tablecloths, and nicely separated dining rooms - some elevated by a step or two - make for a very classy ambience. We ordered mostly by our server's suggestions, and we weren't disappointed: crab cakes, bleu cheese homestyle chips, and the ribeye were all winners. In fact, that ribeye, the "cowboy," which came with a great tangy sauce was probably the best ribeye I've ever had. Their girly drinks from the bar were great too. read more

This review really needs to be broken down into 3 areas: Service - 2 stars Food - 4 stars Crab cakes (Yes, they really deserve their own category :)) - 5 stars!!! It's really 3.67 stars but the food was pretty good so I'll round up. Our 8 person party had dinner here during restaurant week. Their whole menu is also available during restaurant week which was nice because only half of us ordered from the restaurant week menu. Great food but service was little disappointing. Service was a little off that night. The waitress didn't seem to remember who ordered which drinks. Not a big deal but then our food came out and there was so much confusion between the servers! It was like a game of "who ordered what" and "pass the plate around till we get it right." Some sides and crab cakes were also missing from some plates. A friend who asked for horseradish sauce had to ask for it several times before it actually came out. The missing items were eventually brought out and given to correct people. For a nice steak and seafood restaurant I expected a little more from their service. Maybe they can't handle big groups? They offer a steak/crab cake combo w/ 2 sides which I think is a better deal than the restaurant week menu. With the combo you have a choice between a 4oz or 6 oz steak. I got the 4 oz steak/crab cake with wild mushroom risotto and lobster Mac n cheese (extra $3) sides. I ordered medium rare but it was more medium and my friend's who ordered medium was even rarer than mine. But after the whole confusion with who ordered what, I'd rather just not waste anymore time and eat! Lol. It'd be a different story if they cooked it well done. The sides were good but I don't think the $3 extra is worth it for the lobster mac n cheese.Crab cakes were def on point! It was pure crab meat and wasn't overly seasoned. 5 stars for that! I'm glad I didn't do the restaurant week menu because the only 1st course I would've picked would be the crab bisque and my friend said it was too salty. Most of us got creme brûlée for dessert and cheesecake. Stay away from the cheesecake! Texture is lumpy and taste more like it was from the grocery store. Stick with the creme brûlée! It's ALMOST as good as Le Diplomate's. Hope the service issue when we went is not the norm here. I wouldn't mind coming back to bring my family here though. read more

J. Gilbert's has been a favorite for years now. Today I made a reservation for 7:30. I showed up at 7:30. Told the hostess I had made a reservation; yet she asked me to wait. I understand the restaurant may be running behind a few minutes so I patiently waited till 7:45. I asked the hostess how much longer and how are other walk in parties being seated prior to parties with reservations. She said "they came in before you. It will be 10 more minutes". We waited the 10 additional minutes until 7:55 before giving up on Gilbert's and their lack of organization. As good as their food may be; I will not be returning after this experience. read more

It's sad that for a steakhouse the best part of my meal was the crab cake and the wedge salad. Ate @ J.gilbert's twice in a week. I thought maybe the first time was a fluke - - sadly it wasn't. It's a friggin steakhouse but if you notice in the the first few Yelp reviews hardly anyone raves about the steaks. Both times, service was very good but I'll take mediocre service with a good steak but not the other way around. Both times the steaks were just 'meh.' I expect that first steak bite to melt and be full of flavor. T'was neither. I had to add salt/pepper and requested steak sauce to give it some flavor. It tasted like something I could grill at home. A good steak should taste just as good the next morning to make the best steak 'n' eggs ever. Not the case for j.gilberts. My wife's steak was over cooked which tasted bad during dinner and for steak 'n' eggs. Their three course fixed-price meal is a good deal for $33. The wedge salad is excellent, cold, crisp, with a good combination of flavors. Their crab cake is ridiculousy good. If I was forced to go back I would just order the crab cake dinner. Moist. Lots of lump meat. Good flavor. 99% filler free. Excellent. The dessert selection is decent - the creme brulee is so so - - not very firm almost pudding like. The chocolate velvet cake and carrot cake is tasty but I wish they would not serve the cakes cold - - instead let them thaw out a bit before being served. It came down to the bread. I knew it was going to be a 'meh' meal when the bread they brought to the table was toasted white bread from Safeway. Their bread matched the steaks - bland and plain. read more

The experience. So, my husband and I went for Valentine's Day for the main reason no price fixed menu. So kudos for that. Unfortunately it was cold and it really was unbearably cold in the alcove that they sat us. Four card tables with white linen. REALLY??? Just freezing and I kept my overcoat on. When at this level the experience is definitely going to weigh on my rating. The server brought our biscuits with the tables next to us and tended to them while holding our food and I think this is unacceptable as well as they are hot and should be served to the table immediately. The food. Was good. The ahi tuna stack was delicious. The lobster tail was perfectly cooked as the only way to ruin this is to overcook. The crab cake fabulous. The Brussel sprouts and asparagus were way over salted and greasy. My husband's steak and spinach was done correctly but the creamed corn was cold. So many great steak places in the area. Just disappointed. read more

I love a good steak, but I thought this place was really just okay, as there are many other places that offer the same steaks and better sides for a lower price. However, this is McLean, and what you're also paying for is the service and ambiance. I usually go for a lien tenderloin, but I decided to switch it up to the larger Kentucky Kensington (sp?), which was delicious and cooked perfectly. It's the side dishes that kind of fell short. The lobster mac and cheese was a little bare bones with very small pieces of lobster; not much cheese either. The wild mushroom risotto (properly made risotto takes 30-45min to make) tasted like it was made earlier and had been sitting around - my fault for ordering though - should only get that at boutique joints. We were hit with a seafood special at a steak house. It kind of through us off. But maybe that's what the clientele like here; you know people aren't eating beef like they used to. Biscuits, sides and desserts were all pretty standard. Nothing you can't get at one of the Great American Restaurants (Ozzie's, Sweetwater, Jackson's, Costal Flats) - but what you are paying for here and coming here for is the environment. Choose wisely. If the sides were cared for as much as the steaks, this place could easily be a 4/5. read more

It's too bad i even have to give one star. Recently lost my Job but had been stashing aside money to take my family out to a nice dinner for Mothers Day. We made an 8 pm reservation. And hadn't eaten all day so we could thoroughly enjoy our dinner. We arrived at 7:45 and the entire place was in shambles. We were seated until almost 9. Ok totally understandable... it is mother day after all. Sat down and the table was disgusting, sticky still had crumbs and looks as though they put new plates and didn't wipe. Ok finally seated ready to enjoy this meal..... NOPE. Wait 15 minutes to be greeted. The poor server looks as though he's been to war. Finally we get some water and some bread. Place our order. We notice a lot of confrontations all around us with other patrons and staff. Finally we start to realize something is amiss. There is an elderly couple seated beside us that has been there since 6:15 and they still don't have food. They're trying not to get upsets but they clearly are frustrated. They asked to speak to the manager.... Shocker... he doesn't show up. We over hear wait staff talking to each other and they say there's a 2 hour wait for food.... Why aren't they telling us this? Finally i have to track down the manager to tell he we are leaving... the elderly couple... still polite and waiting for food at 945.... As we were walking out... we notice most of the wait staff hanging in the lounge area laughing and having a good ol time while absolutely not giving a shit about anyone waiting on food... my estimate is that 80% of the people in the dining room has been waiting at least 2 hours for food with no end on site... so much for a nice meal with the family....saved for weeks for it and didn't end up getting anything but bread and water... this place is a joke... read more
