I ordered takeout from here for a late Friday night dinner. I was surprised there were still some folks dining at 10 pm when I came to pick up my food. It's a small space, so I'm sure it gets crowded during normal dining hours. I tried two items: #22 Banh beo Hai Phong (Hai Phong Vietnamese pork cake) for $10.50 - also comes with 3 meatballs on the side. I've never had anything quite like this before, but I wasn't a huge fan as I personally thought the layer of steamed rice flour was too thick. Also was a bit bland for me. #6 Banh da cua (crab meat noodle soup) for $18.50 - the flavor of the broth was really good especially with the gooey crab bits, but the noodles were a bit hard. I think this is because I got it for takeout and the broth was only lukewarm by the time I ate, so it wasn't hot enough to continue cooking the noodles. Overall I thought the food was pretty good. Only wish I wasn't in a rush and could take the time to slowly eat at the restaurant instead of getting it to go, which is never my preference for noodle soups.

Relatively new Vietnamese place next to, well, another Vietnamese place. Really liking this stretch of Victoria. Parking is plentiful on Victoria, as well as the side streets. The inside is pretty dated with blank walls and faux wood panelling. Feels like someone's living room. The tables are made of log slices. Looks cool, except they seem to have warped. The surfaces aren't flat. Staff are friendly. Looks like a family run place. I had the fish cake bun. Good flavour. Decent amount of meat. Lots of green onions. Served with bean sprouts, cilantro, and lettuce. Quite tasty. This place has quite a decent variety of other dishes as well. Guess I'll have to come back at some point. Recommended.

No frills northern Vietnamese place. $6 for a Vietnamese sub?! I had my doubts but this bahn mi was so yummy!! The only thing is there are no greens inside, so I had to steal cilantro from my friends pho. The bread was perfectly toasted and super buttery. Very filling and definitely worth it. Pork dumpling - it was more dumpling than filling, which made it hard to finish, but the filling was tasty. Nice to see some less common menu items. I'd come back to try other dishes!

First time trying Hoa Phuong Do, another Northern Vietnamese spot in town. We shared a nem cua bien ($8.00), bun mang vit ($19.00) and bun oc ($17.00). The crab spring rolls were tasty but tiny. Nuoc cham was well balanced. Both broths were clean, leaning towards the lighter side. Duck noodle soup with bamboo shoot was solid. Good portion of duck (on a separate dish) and the side dipping sauce was addictively good. The escargot had a strong, chewy bite. Really enjoyed the noodles in this one along with the pork hock and vegetable starch. Will be back to try a couple more dishes.

I really like this spot - they offer Northern Vietnamese style dishes that I haven't been able to find anywhere else, which really got me hyped for my upcoming trip to Hanoi. We swung by one evening after my lash appointment and they had twenty minutes until close. The owner was kind enough to accommodate us (unlike Hoang Yen, who shooed us away and locked their door lol). It's brightly lit, clean, and lively, with Vietnamese travel videos broadcasting on their big TV. In addition to their regular menu, they have rotating daily specials featured on their board I haven't seen anywhere else. We got the Bun Oc and Bun Ca Cay, as well as the Banh Gio to share as per the owner's recommendation. I really liked the broth in the Bun Oc - it had nice depth and flavour with a little bit of heat, pairing nicely with the crunchy snails. My boyfriend also really enjoyed his dish, which was more dill and tomato dominant. Both dishes were still light and easy on the stomach. The Banh Gio was also really tasty. We liked the wood ear and pork filling, similar to what you'd find in a banh cuon but the cake texture was almost like a Chinese radish cake. It paired perfectly with their warm fish sauce that had some of the juiciest pork meatballs I've ever had. Will definitely be back to try out that roasted quail and Banh Da Cua they're known for!

The new Vietnamese spots on Victoria Drive keep on opening up, fast and furious style. The latest spot is Hoa Phuong Do Restaurant, which specializes in Northern Vietnamese food. They're a few doors down from Chau Veggie Express. We dropped in on a packed Thursday (around 12:30pm). It was all Vietnamese people dining in, always a good sign. Service is efficient and our food came quickly (under 10 minutes). There's only 6 items on the menu (along with two drink options). Small, tight menu. - Cold tea - light and refreshing. Complimented the food nicely. - Herbs - bean sprouts, lettuce and lime wedges. - Banh da cua (#5) ($16.00) - noodles were soft and slightly clumpy. Crab cakes and the bo la lot were satisfying. Broth had a decent depth but is on the light side. - Bun ca cay (#4) ($16.00) - good portion of fish but it's dry. The broth is light and subtle. Noodles are the thin, soft kind that you usually get with bun rieu. - Bun cha quat (#6) ($16.00) - R enjoyed it. I had a piece of the pork, which was well marinated and tender. HPD is another solid Northern Vietnamese spot.

Seemed like a very authentic Northern Viet restaurant and the service was really friendly. We got two soups, the highly raved about crab noodle and rice cake vermicelli. We were hoping to try the duck soup, but there was a shortage of duck at the time and they weren't offering it :( Both were really tasty regardless. There was only one size which is probably closer to a medium, but they do pack a fair bit of protein in. Tad pricey than I'm used to for Viet food at around $16 each, and had a small menu. I'd recommend to give it a try if you're looking for something different than your typical pho!

The space is much nicer, with high ceilings and lots of light - great looking bistro. I ended up trying the following: - Mussels: Very good. Classic dish, but I really like the use of cream in the broth. - Bánh Mì Cay Hải Phòng (Spicy Baguette Sticks): Good. A nice little snack, although it would be easy to recreate at home. - Lamb Chops: Very good. Cooked just right, and the pepper sauce added extra flavour. - Fried Frog Legs: Very good. This was probably the surprise dish for me. They weren't just the legs, but the entire bottom of the frog, so the pieces were huge. The garlic, butter and chili flakes gave it a extra punch. I really enjoyed this one. - Pho Bo: Good. Not the best pho I've had, but it's good enough to stand on it's own. Service was quite good. Very cheerful and quite attentive. Overall a nice meal. It's a great space, the food is solid, and service to match. What I really like is having the variety of both French and Vietnamese dishes, without either of them suffering in quality. Only downside is that is it expensive for what you get.

The menu isnt big but they do have a reasonable selection of items but mostly dinner entrees We ordered a mini version of pho bo (beef broth pho), french escargot and the spicy baguette stick. The bone broth was good and the price for the mini version is good for a light lunch. We both enjoyed the spicy baguette stick with the pork pate. A pleasant surprise. However i find the escargot a bit pricey with the quantity and the way it was prepared. Slightly too oily to my personal prefence The iced vietnamese coffee we ordered tasted similar to a regular iced coffee, missing the sweet condensed milk flavor for a vietnamese coffee

My wife and I stopped in for dinner one evening and each ordered the aforementioned noodle soup--she got a small ($11.75 plus tax) and I got a regular ($12.75 plus tax). We also got an order of salad rolls ($7.50 plus tax), which comes with 2 rolls. The rolls came quite late. They were pretty standard, coming with fried tofu, vermicelli, and lettuce. The peanut dipping sauce was on the liquidy, salty soy sauce side of things -- I wish it were creamier and less salty. 3/5 The soups were decent. The broth was peppery, with some nice, gentle spices detectable in there. I asked for a side of chili oil, which helped amplify the broth. You get a generous portion of noodles, fried tofu, and vegetables (broccoli, bok choy, carrot). Unfortunately the veggies were quite overcooked -- the broccoli was almost soggy, so were the carrots and bok choy. 3/5 All in all, middle-of-the-road veggie pho. The broth is pleasant. The veggies were overcooked, but plentiful and nicely chosen. Decent place for veggie pho.
