Mini Pillow Cakes
Marylynn M.

We didn't have much room for anything else and GOSH, I wish we haven't eaten yet! This was yummy so I'm confident that the other stuff in the menu is good as well. We got these mini pillow cakes to go but ended up eating them outside since they smelled amazing. They got some colorful benches outside and the service for ordering to-go was quick! When we went in, the place looked bright and clean with ample amount of seating. Vancouver parking seems to be similar everywhere else but I'd say they got more spots here than in downtown. It's cheaper too! I'm just visiting but I'd recommend it for anyone local and in the area!

We ordered Hanoi Style Fish Vermicelli Platter (BÚN CÁ CHẤM). We could get creative by wrapping the vermicelli and deep-fried fish in lettuce or dunking everything into that special tomato broth with their homemade pork meatballs. It's a unique and fun experience! Next, we enjoyed the Soupless Chicken Pho (Pho Ga Tron). They served the chicken broth on the side with the quail eggs. The pho is not too heavy, making it the perfect amount for lunch. The food is served in a gorgeous Vietnamese dining set; even the tea is served in a beautiful Vietnamese teapot. They have a condiment set in a glass jar on every table, complete with their housemade chili oil, hoisin, and hot sauce. It's all about the experience! Super nice presentation! There aren't too many Vietnamese restaurants in the West End district, and Ôngbà Vietnamese Eatery has a modern Vietnamese vibe and cozy atmosphere, making it a hidden gem worth discovering. Food: 4/5 Should Try! Service: 5/5 Kids: 3/5 Price: $30-$50 for two (lunch) Presentation: 3/5 Parking: Paid street parking Tips: is a small restaurant with limited seating. has a few vegan options Would I Return: Yes ‍

I saw a video on Instagram that advertised this restaurant and decided to check it out as my boyfriend and I were heading toward Stanley Park anyways. It was also the day after a snow fall which makes pho sounds soooo good. It's located next to a barber shop on the corner of Denman St and Ted Northe Ln. There's only paid street parking that is quite expensive... $1 per 15 minutes. I guess the area itself is kind of classy? The interior had a very modern Vietnamese vibe with nice decorations around the small area they're occupying. It's a small restaurant with maybe 6-7 two-seater tables, so I can imagine how long the lines would get during peak lunch and dinner times! Our server asked if we wanted tea or water. We got both then found out that the tea costed $2. Didn't expect to pay for it as it was offered (my mistake) but nothing too major. Tea was delicious and warmed me up from the cold weather. I got the Pho Dac Biet (combination pho). Mmm. Not a bad bowl of pho! Pricier than most places but delicious! It had a nice deepish broth flavor that hit the spot for me especially on a snowy winter day. The bowl had a lot of noodles and meats which filled me up very quick. The beef meatballs were really good. I need to find something like that back in Seattle when I make my own LOL. My boyfriend got the Bun Bo Hue. The flavor of this was delicious too! I didn't really try his besides the broth. Actually enjoyed stealing sips of the broth from him. The bowls we got were really filling which I would say was worth the price. Overall, not a bad place to check out for Vietnamese food! We both enjoyed the ambiance and the quality of our meal. Would like to try their banh mi to take out to Stanley Park in the future!

Traditional chicken pho

Very tiny spot in downtown with under 20 seats so be prepared to wait in line. Luckily they have a waitlist to add your name and number and you can meander the streets while you wait and they'll call when the table is ready. Very trendy beautiful decor. Clean place. The food is good and considering there's not many pho places downtown, this is a good option. I had the traditional chicken pho. Broth was pretty good. On the sweeter side. The bf enjoyed the beef pho. And the pillows were an interesting appie too. Service can be improved. Took them almost 10 minutes to clear a table. Watching them just take a dish back at a time then off to do something else. Then after a few minutes going back to same dirty table to take a few more dishes. It was so painful to watch.

This place is honestly a gem hidden right in plain sight. They specializes in various different modern Vietnamese dishes and their family origin story is a sweet one. I love supporting local family businesses and this one is a true GEM! Fish sauce glazed wings ~ BOMB these were so juicy and crispy and the fish sauce glaze made it sooo good. I highly recommend this if you like chicken wings cause they were delicious and ultra decadent. 9/10. Soupless chicken pho ~ this was so good, the chicken was so well seasoned and flavored and not to mention it paired so well with the pho noodles and their house chilli sauce. It was super delicious. 8.5/10. Ha noi style fish vermicelli platter ~ my top dish we tried here, it was so good I love how you create your own lettuce wraps and dip it in their house special fish sauce it was such a good combination and its super customizable and fun to eat. 10/10. Pillow cake ~ so good I loved how there was a quail egg stuffed inside the pork and mushroom pocket. The flavors literally explode in your mouth and it was super crispy. 9.5/10. Bo ne (Vietnamese steak & eggs) ~ another super delicious dish I recommend. Their banh mi bread was crispy and crunchy and soft in the inside, and paired so well with the egg and steak. Well seasoned and I like how its served with tater tots. 8.5/10. Avocado salad rolls ~ refreshing and perfect sharing dish. The avocados paired so well with the roll and the dipping sauce. These were all so bomb and their sparking sodas, and viet coffees were good too!

Came here on Sunday for lunch. They have a few tables but it can get cramped. Ordered the special beef pho and my bf really enjoyed it. He has leftovers because it was a big serving. I enjoyed my fish bahn mi with curry mayo but I felt the fish portion was a bit too small. Great flavors. Fave dish was the papaya salad which was very refreshing. I think it's a great spot for Vietnamese food and quick service.

This place is a hole in the wall in the best way. It truly is small, so expect to wait, even in the middle of the afternoon, or opt for takeout. Quite a bug menu for a Vietnamese place. The spring rolls were generously sized and crispy. It's definitely a must order. My friend had the special beef pho, and I had the soulless chicken pho. The portions are huge, and I could not finish it all. They serve the garnishes on the side so you can add as little or as much as you want. Also, there are three sauces on the table. The chilli oil was nice, not super spicy. Some menu items that are hard to find elsewhere alongside the standby vermicelli bowls and salad rolls. It's a good spot in the neighbourhood, especially on a cold day!

Can't recommend enough. Amazing pho and bunh mi! Service was top notch with helpful recommendations! Cute room! Try the donut that they recommend with your pho!

Exceptional service. We moved from the inside to the outside and then to another table because of a wasp. Delicious food. Love this place.

Fall off the bone beef rib pho ($28)

We were in the area and found this restaurant after a quick search. It was an early dinner and there was seating available. It was great that we could be seated right away. Menu was available by QR code at our table. Water was dropped off shortly after we were seated. We ordered the mini pillow cake which were deep fried dumplings with pork, shiitake mushrooms, and quail egg. We also ordered the special beef pho and fall of the bone beef rib pho. Food arrived fairly quickly. The pillow cake was an interesting appetizer. I have not seen this item at any Vietnamese restaurant before. It was crispy and the filling was nicely marinated. I recommend you giving this a try. The special beef pho and beef rib pho had the same beefy broth. The broth was super flavourful without being too greasy. It was definitely one of the better broths I have tasted recently. There was a decent amount of thick noodles. The meat did indeed fall off the bone for the beef rib and was tender. Service was adequate. Our server checked up on us regularly to refill water and clear dirty dishes. We had asked for no greens and onion in the beef rib pho and unfortunately, the kitchen missed the request. My husband ended up removing the greens and onion himself. I would still recommend this restaurant as the food was delicious, and the speed of the service was great.

Vegan pho

Very good vegan pho option, with a better-than-average veggie broth. I stopped in for lunch one day. It's a small but cute little spot right in the heart of Denman (off Nelson). I ordered their vegan pho ($16 plus tax), which came out in about 15 minutes. It's served with the usual garnishes, plus a trio of sauces (Sriracha, hoisin and chili oil -- the latter of which was very nice). The soup comes with wider-than-average (for pho) rice noodles, 4 pieces of spiced deep fried tofu, and tons of veggies (broccoli, carrot, lotus root, king oyster mushroom, and cabbage). The broth is more than interesting than most, with a savoury, very lightly sweetened broth that is nicely seasoned. Good service and portion. All in all, a very good spot for vegan pho in the West End. Recommended.

I went out for lunch with my husband and our daughter at Ongba Eatery on Denman St. It's a whimsical little restaurant that's full of charm both in the decor and in the menu. Their menu is so different from any other Vietnamese restaurant I've ever been to. I love that they offer tater tots with a lot of their dishes. Tater tots are not a traditional Vietnamese food item but that really doesn't matter to us. All three of us love tater tots and found them to be a wonderful addition to our lunch that day! Aside from tater tots we ordered Special Beef Pho, Meatless Platter on Skillet, and Avocado Banh Mi. Special Beef Pho: The soup was flavourful and there were different types of meat in the bowl. The thin slices of meat were overcooked (which is what tends to happen when thin slices of meat are immersed in hot broth). There were also thicker slices of meat which came with bone and these slices of meat were fall off the bone tender. Overall, my husband was very happy with this dish.  Meatless Platter on Skillet: Skillet is not a word that I expect to see on a Vietnamese menu; much less a meatless one. This wasn't a Vegan dish but it did include a Vegan pate. This was my first time trying a Vegan pate and I have no idea what they used to make it but whatever it was, it was tasty. Included was a basket with several pieces of baguette for me to spread the Vegan pate onto. The baguette was toasted and wonderfully crisp when I sunk my teeth into it. I loved every part of my Meatless platter and would happily order it again!  Avocado Banh Mi: This was our daughter's first time eating a Banh Mi sandwich and it was a marvelous introduction to Banh Mi for her. Avocado Banh Mi is such a brilliant idea. I always see things like Lemongrass Tofu Banh Mi or "Vegetarian" meat Banh Mi on other restaurant menus. Avocado isn't exactly an exotic ingredient so I don't understand why such a simple combination of ingredients hasn't become a more common Vegetarian offering on Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwich menus. This Avocado Banh Mi was fantastic. The Baguette was perfectly crisped just like the ones I had for my Vegan pate. Avocado slices were well portioned which made it easier for our daughter to eat it together with the pickled veggies. Not being accustomed to pickled veggies she might have complained about having to eat them if the avocado had been too sparse, but she loved this Avocado Banh Mi and very happily devoured it!  Service: Good Parking: Paid parking on the streets or in a paid parking lot.  Location: On Denman St. @ Ted Northe Ln.

Coming from Southern California with a large Vietnamese community I was so happy to land upon this spot visiting Vancouver. It truly tasted like I was at home with a home cooked meal. What a sweet restaurant name for grandparents.

The space is much nicer, with high ceilings and lots of light - great looking bistro. I ended up trying the following: - Mussels: Very good. Classic dish, but I really like the use of cream in the broth. - Bánh Mì Cay Hải Phòng (Spicy Baguette Sticks): Good. A nice little snack, although it would be easy to recreate at home. - Lamb Chops: Very good. Cooked just right, and the pepper sauce added extra flavour. - Fried Frog Legs: Very good. This was probably the surprise dish for me. They weren't just the legs, but the entire bottom of the frog, so the pieces were huge. The garlic, butter and chili flakes gave it a extra punch. I really enjoyed this one. - Pho Bo: Good. Not the best pho I've had, but it's good enough to stand on it's own. Service was quite good. Very cheerful and quite attentive. Overall a nice meal. It's a great space, the food is solid, and service to match. What I really like is having the variety of both French and Vietnamese dishes, without either of them suffering in quality. Only downside is that is it expensive for what you get.

The menu isnt big but they do have a reasonable selection of items but mostly dinner entrees We ordered a mini version of pho bo (beef broth pho), french escargot and the spicy baguette stick. The bone broth was good and the price for the mini version is good for a light lunch. We both enjoyed the spicy baguette stick with the pork pate. A pleasant surprise. However i find the escargot a bit pricey with the quantity and the way it was prepared. Slightly too oily to my personal prefence The iced vietnamese coffee we ordered tasted similar to a regular iced coffee, missing the sweet condensed milk flavor for a vietnamese coffee

My wife and I stopped in for dinner one evening and each ordered the aforementioned noodle soup--she got a small ($11.75 plus tax) and I got a regular ($12.75 plus tax). We also got an order of salad rolls ($7.50 plus tax), which comes with 2 rolls. The rolls came quite late. They were pretty standard, coming with fried tofu, vermicelli, and lettuce. The peanut dipping sauce was on the liquidy, salty soy sauce side of things -- I wish it were creamier and less salty. 3/5 The soups were decent. The broth was peppery, with some nice, gentle spices detectable in there. I asked for a side of chili oil, which helped amplify the broth. You get a generous portion of noodles, fried tofu, and vegetables (broccoli, bok choy, carrot). Unfortunately the veggies were quite overcooked -- the broccoli was almost soggy, so were the carrots and bok choy. 3/5 All in all, middle-of-the-road veggie pho. The broth is pleasant. The veggies were overcooked, but plentiful and nicely chosen. Decent place for veggie pho.
