I always like coming here for a quick bite. Service is fast and you get your food shortly after ordering. Pho: I've ordered every variation of their pho, but my fave is their pho dac biet, which comes with a few slices of radish. Broth is flavourful and I don't feel thirsty after eating here, so I don't think they use much msg. Only complaint is that sometimes the rare beef isn't so rare when it gets to the table (it's a hit or miss). Bun bo hue: the bun bo hue is not bad here. The broth is well seasoned and the noodles are chewy. It doesn't come with pork blood or hock though. Meat on rice: comes with big pieces of meat, but the pork could be more flavourful. read more

Having heard some pretty good things about this place, I decided to grab some take out and it seems I made another error as I didnt get their pho again! Instead we ordered the following: Dry Mixed Noodle - this bowl of mixed egg and rice noodles topped with a few shrimp, some pork slices and a few other toppings was okay but was very skimpy on the toppings. The soy flavour was dominant in this bowl and I appreciated how the noodles didnt stick together too much but I hesitate to order this again. Pork skewers, pork patty and spring rolls on vermicelli - when we opened the box, it also looked a bit meagre with the small pork patty, skinny spring rolls and two pork skewers all on a bed of vermicelli. Although the flavours were quite good, it definitely could've benefited from a bit more veggies for colour. Overall, the food here is lower priced than similar places but the amount of toppings on their dishes will be what you receive in return. read more

I stumbled upon this place for lunch and was very pleasantly surprised. The interior is bright, modern, and very clean with plenty of seating. Basil Garden is a very affordable spot. I ordered the chicken rice plate ($13.50) and the iced Vietnamese coffee ($5.50). The rice plate was quite satisfying. *Special note that the chicken is fried whereas I usually prefer grilled but it was still delicious. The plate comes with a decently large bowl of soup which was fairly flavourful and sauce for the chicken. I really liked the Vietnamese ice coffee. Super aromatic and deep. The place looks nice and clean. Not many people when we were here on a weekday evening. Maybe it gets busier on weekends. I had the house pho which was ok, quite typical. The iced coffee was good. It was very strong and I had to ask for more sweetened condensed milk to make it sweeter for me. The best thing about this place is the pricing as the medium size pho is $10.50 and the large is $11.50. Inflation has made many restaurants increase their prices and hopefully this place can retain it. Parking is available at the tiny lot in front though the spots are very tight. Solid pho place in the area. Don't let the dumpy exterior fool you. Seriously. Parking is available in the strip mall lot as well as on Renfrew. The interior of the restaurant is really new and modern. Shocking, right? Nice white walls and some pretty moss looking plants as well. Staff were friendly and helpful. No complaints. I had the house special pho. Nice light broth. Vegetables were fresh, and the meat was plentiful. The noodles here are done quite well. Wasn't clumpy at all. The house hot sauce is worth a special mention. It's more solid than oil, and packs quite a bit of heat. So beautiful. This part of town has some serious competition. Great restaurant for pho and vermicelli dishes both before quarantine and during. Given the choices of nearby Vietnamese restaurants, Basil Garden is an easy choice for me to hook onto. Their pho dishes are really good. It's one of those situations where the broth is super hearty and you really want to drink it all. Very generous serving of noodles with it from my experience. Definitely can't get enough of how good this is. Been going more with vermicelli dishes as of late. I like how simple their salad is which might be a strange comment. I eat everything on the plate and it's tough with elegant salads where I might not enjoy some parts of it. Simple lettuce, carrot, and cucumber is great. I like their grilled and shredded pork a lot as well. First time thing shredded port and it was great. Overall, by far my favourite place for Vietnamese food in the Renfrew-Hastings area. We were starving after tennis so finally decided to try out Basil Garden for dinner. It's nestled in between Riz Sushi Bar and Vallarta's Mexican. We dropped in on a Tuesday evening (around 8:15pm) to find it busy. There's 7 tables and one large communal style table. The inside is bright and modern; easily one of the nicer, newer Vietnamese spots in the area. The two page menu consists of appetizers, pho, pork bone noodle soup (hu tieu mi), rice dishes, vermicelli bowls, specialty, banh mi and drinks. We stuck with a few of their dishes marked as BG's specials. - Avocado smoothie (#58) ($4.50) - this was fantastic. Likely the best avocado smoothie we've found so far! Creamy, smooth texture and well balanced (not too icy or too sweet). - Herbs - bean sprouts, lime, Thai basil and chili peppers. - Pho dac biet (#8) ($10.00 large) - you get an abundance of meat, all of good quality. Enjoyed the beef balls, tendon, tripe, beef slices and rare beef. Broth was tasty and clean tasting with a slight sweetness to it. There's no wow factor to it but it's homey and healthy. - Hu tieu mi kho (#26) ($10.00) - dry noodles (we opted for the mix of egg and rice noodles) in a house special sauce served with pork, prawn and a crispy prawn cake. Soup comes served on the side. Nothing really pops out about this dish. Best thing was the crispy prawn cake. I also liked the two small pieces of fish cake. Well-priced, generously portioned, run-of-the-mill veggie pho. I stopped in for some lunch, as I saw that they have a vegetarian (vegan) pho. Their phos come in 2 sizes: mediums are $10.50 and larges are $11.50 plus tax. I went with the latter, which was plenty. My soup came out in about 10 minutes. You get a generous potion of thin rice noodles, loads of veggies, and a few tofu puffs, served with the usual garnishes. The broth, however, was very bland--little depth or complexity. They only have sriracha to make it spicy, no other hot sauces apparently. All in all, filling but bland veggie pho. Not bad but I don't think I'd return with all the fantastic Vietnamese places in town that do veggie pho now. read more

Bright clean place that looks suspiciously like a Freshii outlet. Decent-to-good food at a rather good price for mains. Price for portion is actually rather good and they aren't skimpy with ingredients like the chicken in my chicken curry. 46. Basil Garden Chicken Curry (with choice of Vermicelli or Rice; $12) -This was a pretty big bowl for what you get. Obviously the curry soup is a part of what you get but they weren't skimpy with the chicken. -Sweet potato made this a bit more interesting and gave the soup a slight sweetness. Not especially hot-spicy. -Chicken pieces looked dry, unfortunately, but of course there's curry soup all around. Otherwise pretty decent bad and the price for portion is rather good. 1. Garlic Butter Chicken Wings ($12.50 - about $1.60 per wing) -Came piping hot, juicy, crispy on the outside. But it was also the last item of our order to come, despite being an appetizer. -Overall pretty decent. I think I would have liked the butter and/or garlic flavours to be more pronounced however. I felt service was so-so... Order of dishes, amount of napkins they gave (not really enough), didn't clear dishes from our table. And the dilapidated menus really could be refreshed. I've been here many times before and I'm finally writing my review! Basil Garden probably is my favourite place for Pho in the lower mainland. I always get the house special and it is perfection. The broth is amazing, clean and hearty and they give you lots of meat toppings. Another favourite item of mine are their garlic butter wings! It is coated in buttery crispy crunchy garlic and the chicken is so juicy. The ambience of the restaurant is great too, I love how bright it is inside and how clean the restaurant is. Everything on the menu is affordable, but leaves you feeling happy and full. I will definitely be returning again to try more items on the menu. read more

Excellent establishment - the wait staff are attentive, fast, and up to par with cleaning consistently. We came here on a Friday during lunch time (11am). This was really early but as it got closer to 11:45, more and more people flooded in. We ordered the spring rolls and pork "steak" with rice vermicelli (and fish sauce on the side), the salad rolls with peanut sauce, and the XL beef pho. The peanut sauce that came with the salad rolls was amazing. The salad rolls are fresh!!! Vermicelli spring rolls and pork steak was amazing because the vermicelli noodles were super bouncy and fresh tasting. I have never had such fresh tasting vermicelli noodles. Maybe they are fresh made? The spring rolls were presented in a great way because its many mini spring rolls!! I cant speak for the beef pho but it was really big, lots of beef, and looked super worth it! My boyfriend was full from the dish! Had this place on my to try list for awhile and finally had a chance to order from here. We ordered quite a few items to try. Some of our favourites were the vegetarian sub and spring roll. The vegetarian sub had a nice lemongrass flavour and the bread was crunchy but not overly crunchy. The spring roll is smaller in size, but there were quite a few pieces. It was crisp and delicious. I liked the sauce that it came with. It was different from just the regular fish sauce. I had the dry noodles in house special sauce. The sauce was good and I liked the mixture of egg and rice noodles. I liked how they added some fish cake to it too along with the pork and prawns. The portion was a decent size, but I wish there were more pieces of meat or prawns. It came with a pork bone soup on the side, which was flavourful and not overly salty. My brother had the lemongrass chicken and said it was really good. It looked crisp and was a good portion. Overall, it was a satisfying meal and we'd order from them again. read more

The chicken lemongrass was very juicy and crispy. I don't usually like it on the bone but this is good. Way better than the White Lotus's version of the same thing. The side egg could have been a little softer... The veggie pho was packed full of veg and not just cabbage like some places and the broth was good. The beef pho was a bit oily but not too bad. Once inside we're immediately impressed by the positive vibe. From the bright, clean and modern interior to the fairly friendly and helpful service, we like it all. That is until we got our pho. Menu says they use 'premium' beef but the beef we tasted says otherwise. Extremely chewy meat with residue made for a mediocre dining experience at best. Soup is on the higher sodium scale as well. Walking in to what I thought would be more like a hole-in-the-wall pho place, I was taken away by the openness, modernness, and cleanliness of the restaurant. The restaurant takes on an understated minimalist esthetic, and it smelled like a spa when I first walked in. Their crispy spring rolls are authentic and crunchy, with a great skin to filling ratio. Their pho has a fresh, flavourful broth without relying on MSG for its flavour. They are generous with noodles and meat. They also have rice and Vermicelli bowls, as we as curries. If you like, they also have a durian smoothie for $5.50, which was refreshing. :) read more

I have to admit I'm not a big Vietnamese food fan. I will go for Vietnamese food but it's not on my top 5 favourite list. We were drive around looking in appliance stores for a new refrigerator. East End Van close to Boundary Street where do you go for a quick dinner? Yelp to the rescue!!! with me driving and my g/f looking on Yelp she found Basil Garden! I was tempted to say no... lets go to Commercial Drive and go for Italian food but she said she was starving and wanted to eat sooooon! One of the reasons I tend not to like Vietnamese food is lots of Vietnamese restaurants are dirty! Basil Garden is pretty clean! Note my picture of the condiment bottles... totally clean... it looks like they were brand new! Overall a big thumbs up for cleanliness! We ended up ordering a bunch of appies and we sharing a big bowl of pho. I was pretty full in the end. Shrimp Cakes: Pretty good. Really tasty and crunchy! My only suggestion is to remove the tail shell at the end of the shrimp... I would say most people don't like that shell at the end. Garlic Butter Chicken Wings: Their signature dish! Love it! Super tasty and juicy! I'd come here just for the chicken wings forget about everything else! Salad Rolls: Thumbs up... No complaints. House Special Noodle Pho: Thumbs up. Pretty good. No desserts... we asked the waitress... they don't have any desserts, but you can order a smoothie... No thanks! I'm full enough! It was a rainy Tuesday night... around 630 and the restaurant was probably 75 % full. I think I'm a little behind.... the masses have discovered this place before me! Awesome place to grab lunch if you work in the area! My sister and I planned it so that we would arrive right before the lunch rush (11:30am). We were seated right away and I was pleasantly surprised with how bright, clean, and refreshing the ambiance was. I'm a fan of light wood accents, greenery, and modern design so it was a very pleasant atmosphere compared to some other pho places I've been to in the past. There were even tasteful gold Christmas decorations which I also thought was a nice touch :) Sidenote: I work within walking distance, but I found it was easier to drive. The parking lot is quite cramped, so we found some nearby street parking which worked out just fine. We ordered #40 on the menu (2 barbecue skewers, pork patties, spring rolls, veggies, and rice) -- normally it comes with vermicelli but we were allowed to swap it out! The pork patties were AMAZING. They had a nice char on the outside which added a nice "bbq" smokey flavour to it (as if it wasn't already flavourful enough on its own!). Clearly my favorite part of the whole meal was the pork patties lol, i made sure to chew very slowly to enjoy it thoroughly!!!. The portion was also quite generous too so I thought the dish was very filling! We also ordered a medium rare pho to share. I thought the price was kind of expensive for the portion size ($9.00) which is kind of steep compared to other pho places in Vancouver. But hey, you're paying for the ambiance / environment / cleanliness / convenience -- if you're like me, and work in the area. We also noticed that the restaurant became full of people who seemed to also be on their lunch break. The advantage that Basil Garden has is that it has plenty of seating, and the service is EXTREMELY friendly and fast -- compared to the poke place next door that has little to almost no seating during a busy lunch hour. So all in all, I'd still be happy to come back for my lunch break! Careful though, it get's BUMPIN as soon as it hits 12 noon. Good luck! read more

This is a very unusual contemporary pho restaurant with such a bright and clean interior design. By looking at the exterior design, we would think that it was a old traditional pho place until we stepped into the restaurant. We ordered dry noodles tossed in house special sauce with rice noodles and soup served on the side. The bowl of dry noodles was smaller than the ones we had at other pho places, but its quality was good. We also ordered vermicelli salad bowl with spring rolls, shredded pork and grilled pork skewer. There were two grilled pork skewers. Again the portion of the pork on the skewers was quite small comparing other pho places, but the quality was good and there were many spring rolls in the bowl. The soup that should come with the dry noodles arrived late. It didn't come until we almost finished the dry noodles. Pricing was reasonable and the customer service was good. When we arrived at 6pm, there were less customers but when it was after 6:30pm or before 7pm, more people walked into the restaurant. There were some parking stalls in front of the restaurant or in the same complex. If the parking stalls were full, people could look for street parking. Usually when a restaurant doesn't specialize in veggie pho, it usually ends up being lacklustre when I try it. Not the case with Basil Garden. My boyfriend and I regularly frequent this place ever since it opened, and we both think their food is fairly consistent. That, and their veggie options are pretty darn good. The veggie pho (100% vegan) is loaded with tofu and fresh vegetables. The broth is nice and light, but flavorful. I love the variety that you get with the noodles. Spring rolls are strongly recommended as well. They even have a vegan dipping sauce for you instead of the fish sauce they would normally offer. Great service, good, and envrionment. Came here for an early lunch around 11:30 am. It wasn't too busy and the service was friendly. We ordered the spring rolls and beef stew with rice noodle. The spring rolls were crispy and a perfect portion for sharing. The beef stew came shortly and although the soup was thin, it was quite flavourful and came with lots of carrots and brisket. This place is definitely worth going to again. The restaurant is located in a little strip mall and shares the lot with 3 other restaurants. Good pho place. Light broth with lots of flavour. I ordered their #15 pho. Their noodles are also nice and soft. Their deep fried chicken wings and their fried spring rolls are really good. Their spring rolls are similar to Pho Tan's but cute into small bite sizes. The place is somewhat small. They have a bench type seating along one of their walls. A long table in the middle and few other seatings. They get busy around 12pm. I went on a Monday. So if you have a group best to get there around 11:15-11:30am. Solid 4. They have a great selection on their menu. Seems like they just got renovated or is the newer restaurant than any other in the same corner. Some of the items that you will have in some other pho, specially in the rice/vermicelli option, wouldnt be in their menu. They have beef and chicken skewers instead of just grilled beef or grilled lemon grass chicken. Their chicken could be bone-in - instead of boneless. All in all a great place to take a bite.
