The place looks nice and clean. Not many people when we were here on a weekday evening. Maybe it gets busier on weekends. I had the house pho which was ok, quite typical. The iced coffee was good. It was very strong and I had to ask for more sweetened condensed milk to make it sweeter for me. The best thing about this place is the pricing as the medium size pho is $10.50 and the large is $11.50. Inflation has made many restaurants increase their prices and hopefully this place can retain it. Parking is available at the tiny lot in front though the spots are very tight. It may be better to park on the street instead.
Solid pho place in the area. Don't let the dumpy exterior fool you. Seriously. Parking is available in the strip mall lot as well as on Renfrew. The interior of the restaurant is really new and modern. Shocking, right? Nice white walls and some pretty moss looking plants as well. Staff were friendly and helpful. No complaints. I had the house special pho. Nice light broth. Vegetables were fresh, and the meat was plentiful. The noodles here are done quite well. Wasn't clumpy at all. The house hot sauce is worth a special mention. It's more solid than oil, and packs quite a bit of heat. So beautiful. This part of town has some serious competition. Wish I knew this place existed years ago. Recommended.
Great restaurant for pho and vermicelli dishes both before quarantine and during. Given the choices of nearby Vietnamese restaurants, Basil Garden is an easy choice for me to hook onto. Their pho dishes are really good. It's one of those situations where the broth is super hearty and you really want to drink it all. Very generous serving of noodles with it from my experience. Definitely can't get enough of how good this is. Been going more with vermicelli dishes as of late. I like how simple their salad is which might be a strange comment. I eat everything on the plate and it's tough with elegant salads where I might not enjoy some parts of it. Simple lettuce, carrot, and cucumber is great. I like their grilled and shredded pork a lot as well. First time thing shredded port and it was great. Overall, by far my favourite place for Vietnamese food in the Renfrew-Hastings area. It's great to be able to walk or make a short drive to an awesome place.
YESSSS!! THIS IS THE SPOT! I'm sad that people don't come by more often. It's weird because the outside of the restaurant is kind of sketchy looking and old but the inside is super modern and service was great. Pho (dac biet) is usually what I try to make sure I can get the soup base and taste the clarity of it. Boy was it nice and clear!!!!! It was an amazing soup base!! Coming back just for this. Their banh mi was what I wanted to take out and bring home but I had one bite and finished the entire thing while I was there. Quite unexpected but it was SO good!!!!! Must try!!!!
Bright clean place that looks suspiciously like a Freshii outlet. Decent-to-good food at a rather good price for mains. Price for portion is actually rather good and they aren't skimpy with ingredients like the chicken in my chicken curry. 46. Basil Garden Chicken Curry (with choice of Vermicelli or Rice; $12) -This was a pretty big bowl for what you get. Obviously the curry soup is a part of what you get but they weren't skimpy with the chicken. -Sweet potato made this a bit more interesting and gave the soup a slight sweetness. Not especially hot-spicy. -Chicken pieces looked dry, unfortunately, but of course there's curry soup all around. Otherwise pretty decent bad and the price for portion is rather good. 1. Garlic Butter Chicken Wings ($12.50 - about $1.60 per wing) -Came piping hot, juicy, crispy on the outside. But it was also the last item of our order to come, despite being an appetizer. -Overall pretty decent. I think I would have liked the butter and/or garlic flavours to be more pronounced however. I felt service was so-so... Order of dishes, amount of napkins they gave (not really enough), didn't clear dishes from our table. And the dilapidated menus really could be refreshed. But price for portion is really decent.
The cuts of beef are a little fattier and chewier than I like, which also made the broth have a layer of oil on top too. Not as clear as a regular pho broth, but still full of flavor. Service was excellent and the place is clean.
We were starving after tennis so finally decided to try out Basil Garden for dinner. It's nestled in between Riz Sushi Bar and Vallarta's Mexican. We dropped in on a Tuesday evening (around 8:15pm) to find it busy. There's 7 tables and one large communal style table. The inside is bright and modern; easily one of the nicer, newer Vietnamese spots in the area. The two page menu consists of appetizers, pho, pork bone noodle soup (hu tieu mi), rice dishes, vermicelli bowls, specialty, banh mi and drinks. We stuck with a few of their dishes marked as BG's specials. - Avocado smoothie (#58) ($4.50) - this was fantastic. Likely the best avocado smoothie we've found so far! Creamy, smooth texture and well balanced (not too icy or too sweet). - Herbs - bean sprouts, lime, Thai basil and chili peppers. - Pho dac biet (#8) ($10.00 large) - you get an abundance of meat, all of good quality. Enjoyed the beef balls, tendon, tripe, beef slices and rare beef. Broth was tasty and clean tasting with a slight sweetness to it. There's no wow factor to it but it's homey and healthy. - Hu tieu mi kho (#26) ($10.00) - dry noodles (we opted for the mix of egg and rice noodles) in a house special sauce served with pork, prawn and a crispy prawn cake. Soup comes served on the side. Nothing really pops out about this dish. Best thing was the crispy prawn cake. I also liked the two small pieces of fish cake. Decent Vietnamese fare at BG. 3.5 stars.
Well-priced, generously portioned, run-of-the-mill veggie pho. I stopped in for some lunch, as I saw that they have a vegetarian (vegan) pho. Their phos come in 2 sizes: mediums are $10.50 and larges are $11.50 plus tax. I went with the latter, which was plenty. My soup came out in about 10 minutes. You get a generous potion of thin rice noodles, loads of veggies, and a few tofu puffs, served with the usual garnishes. The broth, however, was very bland--little depth or complexity. They only have sriracha to make it spicy, no other hot sauces apparently. All in all, filling but bland veggie pho. Not bad but I don't think I'd return with all the fantastic Vietnamese places in town that do veggie pho now.
Basil Garden is located on Broadway and Renfrew Street. It's a clean and bright Vietnamese restaurant. We ordered common dish to try out. Spring rolls - it's ok but I didn't like to cut it into small pieces. Rare Beef Slices and Beef Ball - it's good but not authentic. Spring Rolls and Grilled Pork Patty with Vermicelli - decent portion but the sauce a bit MSG. I had to drink few glass of water to dilute it. Overall, inexpensive price and decent portion.
I've been here many times before and I'm finally writing my review! Basil Garden probably is my favourite place for Pho in the lower mainland. I always get the house special and it is perfection. The broth is amazing, clean and hearty and they give you lots of meat toppings. Another favourite item of mine are their garlic butter wings! It is coated in buttery crispy crunchy garlic and the chicken is so juicy. The ambience of the restaurant is great too, I love how bright it is inside and how clean the restaurant is. Everything on the menu is affordable, but leaves you feeling happy and full. I will definitely be returning again to try more items on the menu.
Excellent establishment - the wait staff are attentive, fast, and up to par with cleaning consistently. We came here on a Friday during lunch time (11am). This was really early but as it got closer to 11:45, more and more people flooded in. We ordered the spring rolls and pork "steak" with rice vermicelli (and fish sauce on the side), the salad rolls with peanut sauce, and the XL beef pho. The peanut sauce that came with the salad rolls was amazing. The salad rolls are fresh!!! Vermicelli spring rolls and pork steak was amazing because the vermicelli noodles were super bouncy and fresh tasting. I have never had such fresh tasting vermicelli noodles. Maybe they are fresh made? The spring rolls were presented in a great way because its many mini spring rolls!! I cant speak for the beef pho but it was really big, lots of beef, and looked super worth it! My boyfriend was full from the dish! The dishes came pretty quickly and the chopsticks were wrapped up nicely to indicate that they are clean and fresh pairs! When we paid, we got guava candies.
I toook tooo muuuuch! Yeah we ordered way too much and are rolling ourselves outta here. Really quick and good food. The pork bun #9 was really tender and tasty and super spicy. The chicken lemongrass was very juicy and crispy. I don't usually like it on the bone but this is good. Way better than the White Lotus's version of the same thing. The side egg could have been a little softer... The veggie pho was packed full of veg and not just cabbage like some places and the broth was good. The beef pho was a bit oily but not too bad. It was a great experience, I'll be back!
The restaurant is pleasantly clean and bright. Shrimp cakes were more like shrimp crackers, but they were delicious. Chicken wings were good too. Veggie pho was ok, it had quite a bit veggies, but the soup was mediocre, somehow had soy sauce smell. Bun bo hue was pretty good tho. read more

Bright, clean with a zen-like ambiance. Unusual for a pho place but that's what makes this place a place I would definitely come back to. The pho broth was a highlight for me. I had a chance to speak with the chef and he told me that he spends over half a day making the broth and because his goal is to yield maximum flavor with no unwanted additives, he has so much bone in the pot. I could tell, I drank all of it. The broth was light but packed with flavor. I also had the butter fried chicken wings which were amazing. Use the lime as it adds a tang. A must order. read more

Today was the first time I tried this restaurant out with my boyfriend. The restaurant itself was super clean, modern and bright. I ordered the lemongrass chicken with shredded pork and a fried egg on top of rice. The chicken was cooked to perfection. It was crispy and full of flavour. The shredded pork was a nice touch as well and wasn't overbearing the chicken. The fried egg was good but the yolk was a tad bit salty. There were also a few areas of my rice where it was dry but other than that, everything else on my plate came well together! My boyfriend ordered the beef ball/rare beef/well-done beef pho. The broth was clear and had good flavours. We really appreciated the fact that they put a tremendous amount of meat in their pho. I've come across places where they don't proportion their meat well and sometimes one is left with a good chunk of rare meats and 2 beef balls. However this restaurant made sure there was plenty of each meat. Moving forward, we also ordered their spring rolls and butter garlic chicken wings. Their spring rolls are bite sized and packed with flavour and crunch. I would say that their spring rolls are far more delicious than their wings. The chicken wings aren't bad at all- they just taste kind of mediocre. They do have that rich garlic flavour but that's really all there is. Lastly, the service was okay. The servers were great at topping up our waters, and for handing us our meal with care. However at no point at all did they ask how everything was and were rarely engaging with anyone. In all, I do recommend this place because their food's great and the prices are reasonable! read more
Pho-king incredible soup! I got the curry chicken w/ vermicelli noodles and my bf got the beef satay. Both were outstanding flavour. Thick sauce, the meat tastes really good quality, not that wack flavours other places have. The spring rolls are also dope. Also got an avocado smoothie to share, not too sweet, just perfect. We were both too full to finish the soup so we got takeout, now have lunch for tomorrow! Definitely not your average pho joint, cannot recommend this place enough. read more

New pho place on the block!! It's so white and clean inside that it doesn't feel like the regular pho restaurants u get in Vancouver. It's a modernized pho restaurant. The place is super busy for lunch. Line up out the door even though it just opened this week. Must order the stir fry chicken on rice!! Loads of tasty chicken that my 1 year old loved it so much she ate half of my plate... The curry is really good too. Different from all the pho places out there. You definitely don't get that thirsty MSG feeling afterwards :) read more

Upon entering, the interior is bright, clean and welcoming. It was about 3/4 full and the service was still fast and friendly. Ordered a vermicelli bowl, a bowl of pho, salad rolls, and an order of crispy spring rolls. The portion size of the noodle bowls were generous and the beef in the pho was rare! (Which I like, sometimes the broth cooks it well done before it arrives) the crispy spring rolls were quite small compared to other establishments, and the salad rolls were quite plain. The food was average, wasn't bad, but wasn't great either. Nothing to rave about. read more
The hubs wanted pho on a Sunday evening so we decided to try this place before heading over to T&T. This little joint is on a strip diagonally across from the Broadway Tech Centre. Decor: definitely newer and cleaner looking than other photo places. It has the "westcoast" white and natural/greenery look. There are 4 couples tables lining the window and wall, and then there are 7 couples tables by the wall bench seats that can be combined for groups. A long table that can seat 12 is in the middle. Very clean washrooms per the hubs. The only I don't understand is why they are playing Mandarin music... Customer service: the place was quite busy when we arrived, but we were seated immediately. There are only 2 servers but they work quite efficiently. We were quickly served with tea and our accoutrements. The servers were very friendly as well as when we asked for a smaller bowl, they didn't hesitate in providing us dipping plate and a smaller bowl right away (even though they are eating as well). Kitchen service: I ordered the #40 (spring roll, pork patty, pork skewer bun - $12) and the hubs ordered #8 (house special - large for $10) at 6:37pm and #40 arrived at 6:47pm, while #8 arrived at 6:49pm. Taste: #40 - the bowl is filled with ingredients. The noodle was a bit overcooked so the noodles were breaking apart. Lots of lettuce at the bottom of the bowl. The pork skewer was a bit too salty and tough. The patty is nicely grilled and flavourful. While the spring roll was nice and crispy with the necessary ingredients, the spring roll is TINY(diameter of a quarter). #8 - the broth was not too oily, full of flavour and passed our tea test. We didn't drink a lot of tea after eating. The dish came with 4 cut up pieces of pork balls (really tasty), a bit of tripe slices, tendon and cooked slices of meat (only 1 fatty piece). The bean sprouts and basil were fresh. Portion: for the amount of price we paid, it was decent. Note: they take credit card, which may be the reason why they charge a bit more than other pho places. Overall: 4/5. We will likely come back to try the BBH. read more
New pho restaurant that we just tried today. I gotta say it's one of the best I've tried and I love pho and Vietnamese cuisine! It is a relatively small restaurant but they can accommodate a fairly large group, though by doing so the restaurant already would be 3/4 full. Their ambiance is casual. The restaurant is nice and clean. Washroom are clean. And service is quick and efficient. The food is absolutely fantastic. And their sizes are generous! Good value for what you're paying. Highly recommended to come and try here. Their pho is good and tasty. Their dry noodles look amazing and also very tasty, with some spiciness to it (love the kick!). Overall. A very very good alternative for Vietnamese cuisine in the city. The parking lot there is a little small since they share the lot with other businesses. But there is street parking available and not too far off. Highly recommended. read more
Great Vietnamese modern looking family run joint. Been here twice now as per a recommendation from a friend. Highly recommend the butter Garlic chicken wings! They are to die for. Their recommended pho beef specialty has great beefy flavours and taste quite compatible to my family home made pho. I WI be returning on Sunday with my coworker to try their other dishes. Very clean lol. I had to do a double take to see if it was a legit Vietnamese restaurant. And it is legit read more

Hands down, my favourite Vietnamese restaurant in town!!! Should have written a review ages ago, but I keep eating the delicious food before I get a chance to take a photo of it! It's a bright, beautiful and clean environment to come fill my belly up with fresh, yummy Vietnamese food that tastes like it is made with the quality and care of a home cooked meal! So many of their dishes do not contain MSG and are made from scratch! They even make their pork patties from scratch! So GOOD!!!! My favourites: -Garlic chicken wings, are so crispy, they are full juicy wings, with no boney filler pieces and no MSG! -Basil Garden Salad, fresh, crunchy, delicious and I had no idea baby lotus tasted so GOOD! -Chicken pho, free range chicken soup, no MSG! The broth is clean, nourishing and soooooo perfect on a rainy day when you're not feeling well -Beef pho, I modify mine with the round Bun Bo Hue noodles and add their amazing chilli oil (made in house with lemon grass- have to ask for it) -Grilled lemongrass lambchops!!!!! Wow!! Best lambchops in town!! They only have it on their special weekend menu. I wish they had it all the time!! It is seriously packed with incredible flavour and grilled to perfect juiciness!! -Bun rieu!!!! Oh my goodness!! They had this on their special weekend menu this weekend!! Crab, pork, tomato soup with vermicelli!!! Sooooooooo YUMMY!!! I think this has become my new favourite!! Now this preggo momma is hungry after writing this!!! read more

Not sure what happened to this place but everything went downhill...service...food...I no longer go here unless everything else is closed or too far away. The last three times I went back I was so disappointed. One time we were the only table but it took over 15-20 minutes to get one bowl of pho and another time the noodles were so over cooked I couldn't even pick it up with my chopsticks. Such a shame because the broth use to be so good, very sad this place has gone downhill. read more

Had a craving for some noodles and spring rolls and Basil Garden did not disappoint! This restaurant is located in East Van and is one of the few Vietnamese restaurants open before 11am. It's clean with modern decor and has a good selection of dishes to choose from. I ordered the Bun bo hue which had lots of meat: beef balls & pork slices and comes in a spicy broth. The spring rolls are lightly fried and cut into small bite sized pieces and are delicious! A nice spot if you're looking for a quick and satisfying meal! read more
As a first visit to Basil garden, all in all the service was good. Friendly staff and willing to make suggestions. 4* out of 5 service. Food was good quality. We ordered 4 mains and the garlic chicken wings. The house pho was the best clear clean broth with finesse. I would recommend if you like beef stew you should give it a try. Home style heart and delicious! The wings were a bit disappointing they're not marinaded. You can taste garlic and a hint of herbs. Bit pricey for 9 for$12.50. Phnom phen is still much better. Lemongrass chicken had 3 decent size bone in pieces perfectly cooked. However again not marinaded. Lastly, the satay peanut pho was ok. Not used to it but something different. I'd come back for Pho only. read more
I've been to basil garden a couple times and enjoyed the clean decor and decent Vietnamese fare. I hadn't gotten their vermicelli bowl before so during my recent visit, I got the vermicelli bowl with pork patty, spring rolls and shredded pork. The star of the whole dish is the pork patty here. The pork was very tender and flavourful. It had a nice char to it so added a nice smoky flavour to the patty. The spring rolls were in the thinner side because the diameter was maybe equivalent to like a quarter maybe? They were cut like how people commonly slice bananas which I preferred because of how easy it made eating. My only complaint for the dish was hat the fish sauce they had was a bit in the blander side. I usually prefer my fish sauce to have a stronger taste so when I was mixing the noodles together, the only thing hat brought it to life was the toppings. Overall, for decently priced Vietnamese food in the Renfrew area, I recommend Basil garden. read more

One of the best pho soup and spring rolls I had in town. The soup is flavourful, and the spring roll is crisp outside and tender inside. The wrap is thin. Very well done! Will have to come back and try their rice dishes! read more

Ok been coming here for a few months on the regular now. After chatting it up with the chef I discovered there's a "secret menu" here. The chef will experiment with different fresh items and test out them out to see they will make it to the menu. Just ask the manager is there's anything on the "secret menu" you may get a pleasant surprise, like I did. Lemongrass lamb chops! Tender, perfectly seasoned and super juicy. The other item I discovered is that you can add a lemongrass chicken breast to your Pho Ga. It adds a whole new depth of flavour. Ask for the "secret menu" and surprise yourself. read more

Get the Beef stew (bo kho) with rice!!! It might be the best one I've had in Vancouver. The meat and carrots is melt in your mouth tender. The broth is filled with little dried bay leaves so you know it's been stewed for a very long time. The bowl is small but it'll leave you feeling very satisfied and warm. My boyfriend enjoys their pho. Still waiting for the day we order their garlic butter chicken wings mmmmm read more
