I've found my new favorite pho place! I love that they offer different sizes for their pho (S, L, XL). The broth is delightful and soothing, especially on a dreary day. It somehow manages to taste more complex than other pho places I've been to. It's not oily or too salty. Noodles were cooked just right and not too soft. The bean sprouts don't seem to soften up as much in a small bowl. The interior is fairly small but cozy. They offer tea as the default, and the prices are reasonable. Service was quick and efficient, just the way it should be at a casual pho restaurant. Some paid street parking available. read more

Came looking for a homey, hearty and reasonably priced meal and Pho Xe Lua 24 delivered. My Bun Bo hue was a good portion size and filled with an assortment of meats. I did ask for the spice level to be mild so not sure if that affected the broth taste. The broth was ok but glad it was not overly salty or oily and a good amount of the thick rice noodle. I'd probably try again but ask for the full spice instead of mild spiciness. My friends had the Shrimp Salad Roll, Salt & Pepper Calamari, Lemongrass Beef & Spring Roll with Vermicelli and Lemongrass Chicken & Pork grilled. They all enjoyed but the grilled lemongrass chicken & pork was the best in taste, value and portion size. Interior is clean and updated. The owners here are so kind - they moved us to a different table that was not so cramped. This place mid-week was pretty busy! I'd say 90% of the tables were seated. I ordered the Well done flank and meatball Pho. Dang, the meatballs were THE best I've ever had and I have had so many in Orange County. Canada for the WIN! The Pho Ga was also a hit at our table. The crispy "spring rolls" as they call it here was too garlicky for me but a very popular appetizer! I got small, and it was just right for me. I also really enjoyed the broth. The entire restaurant had a casual ambience and was relatively clean too, compared to most pho noodle places I've been to. Size small unavailable for take-outs: I was going to add a take-out order for mom at home. I wanted to get the small size pho noodle soup but was told that for take-outs, smallest size was L because they did not have the containers for small. If she didn't mention the rationale, I'd understand that small is not available for take-out. But am I the only one who doesn't see the rationale behind this? Tried out their chicken banh mi and although the bread was a good texture being soft and crispy at the same time, there was really little chicken inside! There was also a lack of pickled veggies and instead was bulked up by lettuce. They add too much msg on top of the banh mi as well making the dish extremely salty and making me need copious amounts of water. Service is also quite poor. Overall, I will not return. read more

After another round of Kubb, I'd worked up an appetite and was ready for dinner. I had Pho Xe Lua 24 in my bookmarks (no idea how I heard about this place) so we decided to give it a try. It's a few doors down from Rain or Shine Ice Cream. We dropped in on a Tuesday evening (around 7:45pm). There's plenty of seating inside and it's actually quite modern compared to the usual Vietnamese spots we frequent. The ladies working are friendly but they didn't come back to refill our waters. Menu is split into appetizers, banh mi, pho, Phnom Penh special soup, rice, vermicelli and drinks. Short and simple. - Basil, bean sprouts and lime - the usual herbs but at least the basil was fresh. - Bun bo hue (#18) ($10.50 large) - thick vermicelli (aka. the normal BBH noodles), grilled onion, cilantro, thin beef slices, ham and tender beef balls. Decent but the broth was lacking in depth and flavour. They tried to mask it with spice but I ain't no newbie. There's better BBH options elsewhere in the city. - Hu tiu nam vang (#23) ($10.50 large) - Special Phnom Penh style noodle. It came with rice noodles, grilled onions, cilantro, shrimp, ham and a couple of delicious fish puff cakes. The broth was much more satisfying. Better flavour, more on the sweet side. Trip #2 Came with a few buddies on a Saturday afternoon after we played tennis in the area. - Pho dac biet (#1) ($10.75 large) - house special noodle soup. Decided to try their pho this time around. Broth was okay; a tad salty and again on the sweeter side. Good variety of meats (beef slices, beef balls and tripe) but it was run of the mill. Went here for a casual dinner with my bf and we enjoyed the place and the food. He got the XL bun bo Hue and I got a Large #23 (hu tieu Nam), and springrolls for starter. The springrolls were crispy and plentiful and delicious - I like how they came already cut up which made it easier to eat. I really enjoyed my noodles (#23) - I thought it had an authentic taste and the amount of huge. Haven't had the food yet. But just got my food and the bahn mi was $6 on the take out menu (available on the counter) but I was charged $7.25. Noodles that I got was also $1-2 more expensive than what I saw on the menu. I called back and the guy told me the in house menu is updated but not the take out menu. First time here, friendly staff, nice decor and clean. Broth is a bit watery but pretty decent, good quality ingredients. A couple of things that were an issue for this first visit on a Saturday night: 1. They seemed pretty understaffed. Seemed like two people running the whole place including the kitchen. We waited for a longer than average amount of time to order, get served and get the bill. Between ordering and getting the food it was probably around 20-25 minutes. Looks like they were also doing takeout orders at the same time. 2. I saw L and XL on the other tables (which were pretty damn large and I could not have finished it) and naturally assumed that the small size would logically follow the order of sizing and be enough for a meal. When it came I was actually quite shocked about the portion of noodles.. which was tiny. I finished in around 5 bites and was left with 4-5 pieces of tendon and beef with no noodles. Still hungry, I asked for an additional portion of noodles, which was another $1. To be honest, if I knew the small would be that tiny I would've ordered the large, so lesson learned. This restaurant obviously does not serve the same type of food but was chosen due to proximity and to address my Asian food craving at the time. Great standard offering of Vietnamese dishes. Pho is solid and optionality is provided for your soup- satay and regular, just like Calgarians like. I'd go back to eat pho or to enjoy a vermicelli bowl of some sort. Access is good with lots of (paid) parking. I'd say skip the wings, however. There wasn't too much flavor happening on my dish of wings. read more

Sunday night, my boyfriend and my friends were craving something warm, soupy and delicious. So luckily Yelp brought us to Pho Xe Lua 24. It was full when we got there at 7pm on a Sunday night. We eventually got a table when a reserved table didn't show up for their reservation after 15 minutes. The tea that came was so fragrant and special. It had hints of a sweet coconut flavour in the tea - very tasty and so lovely to smell and wrap your cold hands around. I ordered the Rare Steak and Beef Balls pho. For 50 vents extra, you can choose a different broth, like satay. I chose to stay traditional and stick with the Vietnamese Beef Broth. Piping hot, the broth was full of rich flavours and didn't taste overly salty. The rare steak was very thin and was tender and beefy. The beef balls were bouncy and beefy. I especially enjoyed the pho rice noodles, very very chewy - perfect pho noodles! Service was really nice and the seating area is nice and cozy. I thought that the portions were quite normal for the regular and large size, but I thought the price difference between the x-large and large was too high for a little bit more noodles and meat. I totally forgot how good the pho broth is here and glad that I was reminded. The pho is PIPING hot (the way it should be), the noodles are delicious, and the broth is perfectly seasoned with bits of fried garlic that you don't typically see in pho broth. And if your're a fan of beef balls like I am, these ones are juicy, "bouncy" and all around tasty. Their phos come in 3 different sizes (S, M, L), I would say their small size is smaller than the average small. Next time I'll be going with a medium. The place is family owned with friendly service. One of the better Phos in Vancouver if we're talking about soupy beef noodles. I really enjoyed their beef and beef ball noodles. For a change (I've had some bad experience with Phos) the noodle texture was spot on, the soup was delicious and the beef didn't taste funny. The Bahn Mi I had was pretty good (8/10 stars for that dish alone). However, the shrimps cakes we had were a little overdone and the summer rolls are a tad expensive compared to other pho places. They also need to work on their fried food. (E.g. Calamari and fried rolls) And for these reasons, i must subtract 2 stars. read more

After meeting up for drinks with my friend at Craft down in Olympic Village, my Yelp-ing to find a good place for some cheap, piping-hot sustenance led us to come into Pho Xe Lua on a Friday night. Luckily this place is only a 10 minute walk to the Broadway City Hall Skytrain station, and I was easily able to find free parking in the residential areas. We walked in and were seated quickly even though it was a fairly busy night. Right away we were served a free pot of tea to share between the two of us. Now, being a HUGE tea junkie, I am always on the lookout for new teas to add to my tea cupboard collection. My friend and I could seriously not stop talking about the tea. While we tried to ask what kind of tea we were given, my friend thought it must've been a herbal blend with some sort of roasted grain. It tasted smooth with a distinct umami taste that was reminiscent of chocolate. My friend ordered the Large House Special Pho and said that while it wasn't the best Pho she's had, it was satisfying. She noted that she enjoyed the fatty slices of meat. I settled on the Lemongrass Chicken and Rice. The chicken was perfectly cooked with a crispy skin, and I appreciated the delicate notes of lemongrass that came through despite the strong presence of garlic. I loved the salad that came along with the meal - the sweet and tart dressing gave some lightness to the overall dish and refreshed the palate well. One thing to note - this place is cash-only.
