I've passed by this place for years but only came in yesterday. I should have come sooner what with all the laudatory posts on social media from academics and critics alike about this place. I ordered pho, and the person I was with had the shrimp salad roll and spring roll. All were brought out efficiently, even too quickly after ordering but all the items we had were fresh, well presented and flavourful. The pho looks basic enough but the layers in the flavour come through in the care taken to prepare, the time taken to prepare the broth but as well in the freshness of the noodles, meat and the crisp vegetables that accompany the soup. 5 stars for the crispy fried chicken. This is Asian style fried chicken with little to no batter. So you get the crispy skin and tender juicy flavorful meat from the chicken leg. It is very similar to a Vietnamese restaurant in Sydney, Australia. My friend living there raves about the fried chicken and laments about not seeing it in vancouver. Well, now I can tell her it is available, just that we didn't know it. I also tried the pho. I had the small rare beef and beef balls pho. It was good. It was really small when compared to other places' small portion. But it was sufficient for me. The iced Vietnamese coffee was strong and robust. The condensed milk was definitely needed. I've been able to try a decent amount of Vietnamese restaurants. Love how they all specialize in a specific dish. My Chau's claim to fame is their pho ga (chicken noodle soup). They're located next door to Jarrito Loco Tacos. I dropped in for lunch twice. It's reasonably busy. Didn't realize they have more tables than when you first walk in. Staff is friendly and the food comes out quickly. They drop off a pot of jasmine tea when you sit down. The menu is massive with chicken pho, beef pho, noodle soup/dry noodle, rice vermicelli, rice dishes, appetizers, desserts, fruit shakes and beverages. Stick with #1-3 and you'll be in good hands. Prices on the menu already include taxes. Trip #1 First visit was a solo one on a late Wednesday (around 2:00pm). - Mien ga (#2) ($9.75 large) - special chicken with clear noodle in soup with chicken, liver, gizzard, quail egg and chicken balls. There's so much noodles but I finished them all. Loved the chicken balls and gizzard. Great chewy texture. All about the off cut meats! There was also grilled onions in the broth. I can't believe I haven't written a review for My Chau? This is one the best, if not the best, pho places around period. If you are coming here the must have is the fried chicken pho. Mark my words, this dish will change your life. It is the thing dreams are made of lol. Ok a little over the top, but in all seriousness you cannot get this bowl of pho anywhere else (that I know of and I have been to over 2 dozen Vietnamese restaurants all over the world). The Dish shows it's French influences everywhere from the clear chicken consommé broth to the confit style fried chicken - absolutely amazing. The fresh herbs always make a huge difference and they have a few that aren't found at your typical pho joints. The fried rolls use rice paper and are perfectly cooked and crispy with no trace of oil or grease. I have tried a few of the other standard Vietnamese fare here and all delicious. You really can't go wrong with any dish here. It's all about authenticity and flavour here at this well run "mom and pop" restaurant. Ken runs the front with his family and they close at 6pm to spend time together. Yes strange they are closed for dinner but Ken says they prefer a balance in life which I totally respect. The fact that you can get noodles and fried chicken at 9am makes this my new fav spot. Recently featured on my Best Of Pho series, the noodles are great, i wish the menu wasn't under the table cause i read it upside down and ordered the one with gizzards. You can tell this family run restaurant is proud and passionate about their cuisine. Small Family run restaurant on Kingsway between knight and Victoria. The owners are super friendly always smiles and remembers what we usually order. The owner's son always give us the special salt, pepper and chili sauce that goes well with the chicken pho. Looks like there's a legit reason why this place was completely full on a Saturday morning, while another pho place (literally next door) was completely empty. Oh, and this places doesn't even need to open past 6pm haha. A small lineup formed while we were there. The food item were among the lowest I've seen around here too, at around $6-7 per item, even for the large. I didn't go myself, but my friend said this washroom was the nicest washroom in a Pho restaurant he has ever been inside. He said it was so nice that you think you walked into someone's home. I tried some beef ball and steak (#4), and they were wonderfully done. The meat was literally raw, so you could cook it in the soup. The fried chicken on rice (#62) was excellent. Crispy orange skin, very moist meat. My only complaint was that the portion of meat seemed a bit smaller than other places. And the salad tasted a bit off. One nice touch about the white coffee is that they give you the cup of ice some 5 minutes after you first get the coffee drip, so that the ice isn't all melted before your drink goes. I don't know if it's the BEST place for pho in Vancouver (other places like Thai Son come to mind), but this one definitely gets my approval. When I walked into an ethnic restaurant, I found the floor was sticky and the utensils were a bit greasy!! They put a sign outside the entrance and special well known for chicken pho. Family-run and a childhood favourite amongst me and my family. Been going here since I was in elementary and im happy to say nothing's changed besides the expansion of the restaurant. Food is still the same with great prices and the dad is still working the front with the son and the mom and daughter in the kitchen. They specialize in crispy chicken pho which is noodles in pho soup with an order of their specialty fried chicken that they serve on the side to keep it crisp. You can also get the house special which comes with chicken hearts, gizzards, liver and quail egg if you're into innards! Personally, I always order the Mien Ga (chicken noodle soup with glass noodles) Similar to Pho Ga but not quite. I grew up on this place so it always hits the spot for me. Only a few places offer Mien Ga in Vancouver too so it's worth a try if you haven't had it. It's good not great but definitely hits the spot that's for sure. Busy place. It's bigger on the inside than it looks on the outside, since it also seats in the neighboring storefront. Most famous dish is probably the deep fried chicken. Cheap and delicious!! Having read the other reviews, we went in to try the fried chicken pho (that's #3 on the menu!). The pho comes separately from the fried chicken, which is smart as it keeps the chicken crispy and the pho broth clear. My boyfriend also ordered the lemongrass chicken. 3.5 stars Good fried chicken leg and mien ga. Probably one of the only places in van that you can get mien ga. If you don't know what mien ga is... it's clear noodle soup with chicken. The chicken broth is good and clean, the glass noodles are bouncy and retains the heat well... and the sliced chicken is good, but not great. In my books... which is why it's a 3.5 star and not a 4 The fried chicken leg is good tho! Cheap and quite delicious, My Chau is known for their fried chicken among a menu full of expected dishes at a vietnamese restaurant. The food came only minutes after it was ordered including a beef and tendon pho (small size) which actually is very small but tasty broth and good topping to noodle ratio. Next, the pork patty, meat pie and shredded pork with rice also came with A LOT of shredded pork and tasted good when mixed with some fish sauce. The lemongrass chicken and spring roll on vermicelli wasn't on the menu but they had no problem bringing out a large bowl of chicken (full fillet instead of shreds!) and spring roll (used rice paper wrap making for a crisp and well fried bite! Finally, the fried chicken side order came and it was as good as people say! It was a well fried chicken leg with a crispy but easy to remove skin, tender chicken and tasty! We also added a large house special pho (large) since it wasn't quite enough food and again, it was good as expected with enough meat to satisfy us. Bring on the pho! It was chilly outside and I felt a cold coming on so I decided to finally check this place out. The chicken pho is pretty decent. The broth is really yummy but the deep fried chicken left something to be desired as it was a little too dry for my taste. I tried jackfruit for the first time, which tastes like mango, but has a crunch and chewiness to it like pineapple. Maybe I won't be so shy to pick up one from the grocery store next time I see one.:) I got what I came for, my tummy was full, and I was warm and comfy when I left. Spring roll is a must cause I love spring rolls. The stuffing not as much as you prob would like but it's enough. Usually I do eat thicker spring rolls but theirs are a little thin. OMG, I thought I knew chicken pho but this is like non other. For my first pho experience in Vancouver, I have asked Christian H, Theresa W, and her hubby to try out My Chau. Yelpers have such great reviews for their chicken pho so we had to come here. I usually order the special beef pho at Vietnamese restaurants because nothing beats a good bowl of beef soup with all the trimmings. But My Chau's chicken pho was PHENOMENAL! The chicken leg was deep fried and super crispy. The noodles were not overcooked and the broth was clear and flavourful with the addition of herbs and bean sprouts. My only complain is that they need to give us a larger portion of the chicken because I can't get enough of it! Hopefully their large bowl has more chicken, not just noodles. I have had My Chau bookmarked for a few years now, and I finally got a chance to try it out recently. We went in after the lunch rush, and were seated right away (plenty of free parking on Kingsway in the early afternoon). The place isn't the biggest, but it was clean and had your basic pho place setup (all condiments and utensils are already on the table, self-serve). We ordered: Shrimp rolls: tasted fresh (I like to add hot sauce to the peanut dipping sauce). Fried chicken leg pho: The pho itself was pretty good (nice broth), and the chicken leg was really crispy. We liked the chicken so much that we had to order a side order of it for dessert. Lemongrass chicken with rice: this was decent, but the chicken pho is what most people order, for good reason. I have been waiting to come here for a long long time, what a disappointment it was when I did. I ordered the #3 chicken pho as everybody on yelp said to do. Chicken was not crispy, the noodles were over cooked and way too mushy. The broth was tasty but FULL of msg....I was dying of thirst when driving home. I literally only ate 10% of my pho. My daughter had the rare beef pho and she did not like her pho at all. I ordered spring rolls and told the girl the spring roll with the 2 pieces, because there's another spring roll order with 8. When the rolls came I thought wow that's a lot of spring rolls for 1 order. When the bill came she charged me for 2 orders ? I explained this to her and all she said was sorry and did not deduct it off my bill. It's strange to me the spring rolls and chicken leg which are both deep fried came out luke warm? Should they not be made fresh to order ? This place obviously makes them in advance and must put them over a heat lamp...that's exactly how it tasted. The ice coffee was ok. Ladies and gents we have a winner! After several several... several... 3-star and 4-star selections, I finally landed on a solid 5-star. And I owe it all to Kwoky and Christian. We came here for a lunch with the lovely couple, after noticing that the restaurant had top reviews. We arrived around 1:30, but the place was surprisingly still full of diners and we had to wait outside for another 5 minutes. We didn't mind, since it was a beautiful day outside and we enjoyed the sunshine (staying inside was hard, since the smell of pho was mouth-watering). When we got our seats, the servers were sooooo nice. They always came over with a smile, they didn't try to rush us when we weren't ready with our order yet, and kept refilling our teapot at a decent pace long after we were done eating and were just chatting. The Pho Ga is amazing. the crispy chicken is devine (I love the crunchy skin), and the soup base is clear (tsing) and still flavourful. But it's not just about the chicken pho people, their regular selections are just as awesome. Husband ordered his regular beef brisket rice noodle stew (he's just not as adventurous), and was thoroughly impressed with the large bowl that came to our table. It was certainly bigger than what we'd find anywhere, and there was so much of everything (noodles, vegetables, brisket) that you can't help but let your jaw drop to the floor. Despit the distance from our home in downtown, we already declared the second we walked out of the restaurant that if we're to go for pho, this is the place! Weirdest pho ga (chicken pho) I've ever eaten in my life. I was a little confused when there was a deep fried chicken thigh with my pho... A little bit shocked to be honest. I've eaten a lot of pho ga over the years, both in North America and in Asia and i've got to say this is a first. Pretty much the broth in the pho tasted like a cube of chicken broth mixed will a whole lotta MSG. The MSG is super authentic (because Vietnamese cuisine uses MSG religiously), but the broth? No. You're supposed to simmer the chicken and bones, not stir in some instant powdered chemical stuff. The chicken though was pretty good, if eaten on it's own without the disastrous "pho ga" - I'd much rather get this than KFC, now you know what I mean by weird right? Also tried the regular pho bo, same goes for the broth as the chicken - it was really really really bad. Best Chicken Pho in Vancouver. Its well-known among all the Vietnamese people too. Don't be fooled by how small and secluded it is. You'll notice how clear the soup is and after the first sip you know you're in for a great lunch. Good Pho has clean and clear broth, a lot of taste but not salty and no or little MSG. They also use quality chicken meat. Don't put any sauce in this soup you'll just ruin the taste! Have it on the side to dip. Throw in your fav veggies which are fresh here, not wet and looks like it has been sitting around for days. SERVICE: Fast, it takes the waiter longer to bring you the Pho than for it to be prepared. Only reason you'd wait all is if you ordered the fried chicken with Pho. But I prefer the healthier boiled chicken, gizzards, liver which is menu item #1. They are also very friendly, after all business is good. PRICE: Cheap, its $6 for a small bowl of Pho which is plenty for me at lunch. SUGGEST: Eat here now. Don't wait. Order menu item #1 and enjoy the best Chicken Pho in Vancouver. Park at the back if none at the front. And its not open on Sundays fyi. read more

I'm not an avid fan of the much loved pho. Shocking, I know. What's more shocking is that I'm Vietnamese. Say what??!! Now, what person, let alone a Vietnamese, on planet Earth does not like the proclaimed national dish of my people's country? Well, me for one *meekly waves hand in the air*. Call it treachery. Call it blasphemy. Call it bad parenting. Call me, maybe? Ha. i doubt it. The secret is out. Now, calm down, I don't despise it. I even eat it on occasion. In fact, on many occasions especially when I'm forced to, like in survival mode. The truth is, it's simply not my vietnamese dish of choice given the array of other delicious options available at my disposal. Okay? Let's move on. However, with every shocking admission, there are always exceptions. This exception was in the form of a deep gnawing craving, quietly hibernating in muh hungry belly. The said craving usually awakes from its slumber every 3 years and I was overdue for one. I wanted pho. I wanted it bad and I had to have it pronto! In my mad search for the best chicken pho in this fair city, I came across My Chau and knew this is where my craving shall meet its demise. I arrived, sat down, looked at the server straight in the eye and let out an exasperated pho ga #3. I think I might have even shot up three fingers on my hand to ensure that there will be no miscommunication. He understood my plight immediately. When the infamous pho ga #3 came, I quickly scanned its appearance and nodded in approval. I took my first sloppy slurp and was overcome by a pleasant tingling sensation all over my body. The broth was magical and the crispy chicken sublime. Long story short, the mighty pho ga won the battle and my defeated craving scurried back into its dark slumber. What does this all mean in the grand scheme of things? Does it mean I'm a convert? Nah, probably not. But it can quite possibly mean that my craving may be stirred sooner than later, perhaps in two years time? Hey, I may not get brownie points for being their most regular customer but you can bet your buttons that this is THE place where I will get my pho ga on. Word to the big bird. read more

Best Chicken Pho! Feeling like Pho today so checked Yelp and found this place. This place is small but busy even at 2pm unlike the Pho place two doors down which was empty. That tells you something this place is good. My friend ordered the beef with meatball Pho and I ordered their Chicken Pho. One taste of the broth and I knew that this is the place for Pho. Nice clean flavour. Love their chicken too not greasy perfectly seasoned and crispy. Writing about it makes me salivate. read more

Disclaimer: I rank meat in following order (1) beef, (2) pork, (3) poultry and (4) seafood. Wanted to switch up from my usual pho and decided to check out My Chau due to all the acclaims for its' pho ga (chicken). I was aware that the #3 (deep fried chicken pho) was their specialty - and I was ready to deviate from my usual Vietnamese litmus test -- order menu item #1 (the 'dac biet'/'house special') and I'll learn everything I need to know. However, my dining partner was didn't want us both to order the same thing - yes, one of *those* people. Am I the only person that doesn't see the big deal about the same dish ordered more than once? Yes, I'm aware of the (irrational) argument that ordering the same thing will result in smaller portions. But give me a break - it's usually due to some non-conformist drive. I already have enough of these people in my life - if you are one, I do not want to be friends with you -- stop making life difficult. I'm usually quite Machiavellian in these situations but I thought I should stick to my 'dac biet' rule. I got the #1 (chicken pho with chicken slices, liver, gizzard, quail egg and chicken balls) and my dining partner got the marquee #3. The dac biet was good - clear Hanoi-style broth and the chicken was good - wasn't a huge fan of the chicken balls though (seriously, beef destroys chicken in ball form). The noodles were cooked well - al dente and retain a good 'ricey' flavour'. The garnishes were very fresh as well. The springs rolls were a tad dry but pretty good. But really, I spent the meal kicking myself for ordering the wrong item. Had some of the on-the-side fried chicken leg and it was well-seasoned, crispy and juicy. It was good - strange orange colour though. I kept thinking, "WHY DID YOU TURN DOWN FRIED CHICKEN, YOU MORON?!?" Definitely get the #3 -- don't waste your time elsewhere. So, maybe I'm a sourpuss for missing out on the fried chicken pho. But I generally prefer the heavier, darker beef broth - it's just more flavourful, yo. My chicken pho was solid and probably one of the better ones I've had in Vancouver -- but I'm not going to normalize for it. It's like winning 'Sixth Man of the Year' -- ya, you're the best guy off the bench... but you're still not a starter. Not my bag, I suppose. But that was so damned good fried chicken. Will come back for that - or combo it with something other than pho ga. Closes at 6PM. read more
